Abstract:The dynamic growth of international collaboration in the scientific and professional spheres leads to a wave-like increase in the volume of translations of professional and scientific texts and determines the relevance of the problem under study. Translators have problems translating abbreviations of professional terms. This paper analyzes the ways of translating English abbreviations in the field of materials science. As research methods, we used, among other things, the analysis of methods of translating English abbreviations into Russian, the study of articles in the field of materials science, the collection of data on abbreviations of professional terms and the comparison of the ways of translation of abbreviations of professional terms in the texts of materials science. The article reveals the features of the ways of translating abbreviations of professional terms in materials science texts. The main results of the research work are the identification of problems of translation of English abbreviations that the translator faces in the field of materials science, and the determination of the use frequency of one or another translation method. The materials of the article can be useful for researchers in this field, physics students and translators of scientific and technical texts.

Abstract:The article examines the terms that are most commonly used to describe machine translation. All the terms presented in this article are used in scientific and journalistic works depending on the process of producing a translation. The main factor is the participation of a human translator in the process. The article is focused on the terms used in Ukrainian and English terminology. Modern computer and linguistic terminology have no general term to describe machine translation as a phenomenon and this problem is partly related to the systems that generate it. The twenty-first century has witnessed a rapid development of computer technologies, including the spread of the Internet, which has led to the emergence of new interdisciplinary and applied fields of science, such as computer linguistics and a new field in translation studies which is related to machine translation. Machine translation was firstly done on computers that were not so multifunctional as modern computers. Nowadays machine translation applications such as Google Translate, SYSTRAN, DeepL Translate have been developed and are now available to everyone – to translators and to people of any other specialization and profession. Despite the rapid development of translation studies and computer technology, the terminological problem of machine translation theory has been ongoing since the beginning. Both Ukrainian and English terminology use one of the presented in this article terms as a general term. For example, Ukrainian terminology most commonly uses the term machine translation while English terminology uses the term computer-aided translation as a general term. The problem is that it depends on the researcher and on the century or decade when a specific term was used. No term mentioned in this article is regarded as wrong or unusable, specifically if it describes human translator involvement in the process. The developing process of translation studies and computer technologies is ongoing so is the terminology. The article pays attention to all the terms, both in Ukrainian and English, and gives information about the establishing process of machine translation terminology, which shows the use of a particular term nowadays, and establishes the links between modern terminology of machine translation and the development process of the terms since the beginning. The aim of this article is to analyze all possible options and propose a general term to be used in Ukrainian language for machine translation as a phenomenon. Analyzing terms that are commonly used in parallel to refer to machine translation itself and the systems that generate it will help to determine which one is best to use in scientific research.

Abstract:Исследование терминологии имеет важное значение как для языкознания, так и для конкретных научных дисциплин в целом и биомедицинской инженерии в частности. Данная статья посвящена описанию системных отношений внутри тематической подгруппы «Бионано-технология» как фрагмента терминосистемы биомедицинской инженерии, выявлению лингвистических особенностей терминов бионанотехнологии в русском, английском и китайском языках и составлению фрагмента русско-англо-китайского словаря терминов биомедицинской инженерии. Материалом для исследования послужили термины русских учебно-научных публикаций по биомедицинской инженерии, а также английский и китайский терминологические словари по биомедицинской инженерии. Основными методами исследования являются описательный, индуктивно-дедуктивный методы, методы сравнительно-сопоставительного, компонентного, дистрибутивного анализа, прием направленной выборки материала. Каждая терминологическая единица представляется в виде словарной статьи, что расширяет использование материалов исследования в практике преподавания русского языка как иностранного. Анализируются внутренние системные отношения в данной подгруппе. На основании проведенного анализа сделаны следующие выводы: в русской терминосистеме количественно преобладают однокомпонентные термины, при этом пять терминов из 19 обладают вариативностью; между терминами русского языка и соответствующими им китайскими терминами выявляется полное семантическое совпадение; при сопоставлении с английской терминосистемой 18 из 19 терминов полностью совпадают друг с другом и структурно, и семантически. The study of the terminology is important not only for linguistics, but also for specific scientific disciplines, biomedical engineering (hereinafter: BME) in particular. This article is devoted describing systemic relations in the thematic subgroup “Bionanotechnology” as a part of the term system of biomedical engineering (BME), uncovering the linguistic characteristics of the analyzed terms in Russian, Chinese and English, and compiling a section of the Russian-English-Chinese terminological dictionary of biomedical engineering. The source of the material is the Russian textbook of BME, English and Chinese terminological dictionaries of BME. The main research methods are descriptive, inductive-deductive, methods of comparative, component, distributive analysis, method of directed sampling of material. Each term in this subgroup is analyzed on the basis of the dictionary entry, which expands the use of research materials in the practice of teaching Russian as a Foreign Language. The internal system relations in this subgroup are analyzed. Based on the analysis, the following conclusions are obtained: single-component terms occupy the first place; 5 out of 19 terms can be presented in two versions; all terms do not coincide with their Chinese counterparts structurally with full semantic coincidence; when compared with the English term system, 18 out of 19 terms completely coincide with each other both structurally and semantically.

Abstract:This paper examines the linguistic challenges in translating English medical terminology into Chinese, finding appropriate translations equivalents for their individual denotations and connotations, and considering also how they take their place in terminological structures such as hyponymy in both languages. In the examples discussed, the Chinese translation equivalents are often more explicit in their reference than their English counterparts, and find alternative ways to explain the term’s meaning. The indeterminacy of some general science terms and within many English medical compounds is resolved in their Chinese translation equivalents, and acronyms are unpacked—albeit in rather lengthy paraphrases. Translations for euphemistic terms are found in more and less explicit paraphrases, from which translators and health professionals can select the most appropriate for the context of communication. Because of the continuous advances in medical terminology, keeping pace with the range of Chinese translation equivalents presents challenges to bilingual terminographers. The need to automate the extraction of bilingual terminology from large corpora is evident, both for the purposes of machine translation, and to build computational ontologies for knowledge abstracting from large medical databases.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the specificity of translating terms from scientific and technical articles on Computer Technology from Ukrainian into English. The results of the paper discover that the most frequent translation operation is a corresponding term. Less frequent transformations are concretization and generalization. The translator’s goal is to produce a target text that would convey the same information as conveyed by the ST; the amount of the communicatively relevant information in the TT must be the same as in the ST. If the goal is achieved, the communicative effect produced by the TT is equal to that of the ST.

Abstract:From the emergence of the concept of the Internet of Things to today, China has always been very concerned about the development of the Internet of Things technology. The research and application of Internet of Things technology has become an important measure for the country to promote supply-side reform. The Internet of Things technology is the core innovation content of the country and an important measure to realize the smart city. This paper analyzes the cutting-edge research results in the field of Internet of Things abroad. This paper focuses on the application of IoT technology in English terminology research. This paper specifically analyzes the feature extraction methods of Internet of Things terms and studies the application content of Internet of Things technology in English-Chinese translation. We specifically conduct translation research on the content in “The Internet of Things: Enabling Technologies, Platforms, and Use Cases,” focusing on the translation of scientific and technological terms. As a kind of technical English terminology, IoT English terminology has the characteristics of strong professionalism and rigorous semantics. This article specifically translates the original part of the practice report and classifies the terms that appear in it, including IoT English terms for which canonical translations have been made and IoT English terms that do not have standardized translations. The research will further carry out the investigation and analysis work. The research is to identify the terms that have standardized translation, especially the detailed research of the terms of the industry field. This paper selects standard translations and summarizes the translation methods of terms from three aspects: abbreviations, compound words, and semi-technical words. The research results provide guidance for terminology translation. This article translates terms that do not yet have a canonical translation. Based on terminology characteristics and existing terminology translation methods, this paper proposes a variety of translation methods such as literal translation, decomposing and combining, and non-translation. The study described in detail with examples. The research results of this paper are expected to provide some reference for translators engaged in the translation of scientific and technological documents.

Abstract:The article studies the concept of “military terminology” in modern Russian. The relevance of the study is due to the widespread use of military terminology in the media and the rapid advancement of weapons technology. The aim of our research is to study the features of military terminology in modern Russian. The research methods are: the study of scientific literature on the topic, the analysis and the classification. The article distinguishes between the concepts of “military vocabulary” and “military terminology”, defining military terminology as a significant part of military vocabulary. The article explores the problem of studying military terminology in a historical context and analyzes various modern approaches to the classification of military terms concluding that these classifications have a number of shortcomings. The novelty of the study lies in the expansion and deepening of the existing classifications of military terminology. The system of military terms is quite mobile: old terms are replaced by new ones, and many foreign borrowings appear. The article concludes that military terminology occupies a significant place in the lexical system of the language, it is widely used in everyday speech of native speakers and in journalism. The study of military terminology is of great importance not only within the framework of linguistics, but is also of high value for history.

Abstract:Abstract San Ti (Three Body , better known to English readers as The Three-Body Problem) stands out as the most successful Chinese literary work introduced to international audiences through translation. Previous studies have primarily focused on translating culture-specific terms and fictive terms in the work, arguing that the strategy of foreignization alongside occasional footnotes significantly contributes to its tremendous success. Techno-scientific terms, on the other hand, have received relatively little attention because their rendering seemed to be a straightforward matter of back translation. However, our case study reveals that the source-text-oriented translation strategy for culture-specific terms and fictive terms presents only a partial picture of the science fiction (SF) terminology translation in San Ti . It demonstrates that translating techno-scientific terms needs to be considered alongside culture-specific and fictive terms. Moreover, it provides proof that translating techno-scientific terms cannot be simplified to a process of back translation only. The translator sometimes deviated from the principles of equivalence, resulting in three different types of interlingual terminological shifts, which are discussed and analyzed in the current study. Given the heterogeneity of the target readers and the interesting paradox of San Ti as hard SF, these different types of deviation serve two divergent purposes: popularization and scientization. In addition to explaining the success of San Ti in the English-speaking world, the findings of this case study also provide insights into the unfaithful facets, contextual factors and research scope of terminology translation in this specific genre.

The authors describe the results of the vocabulary analysis based on the stratification, content, structural, morphological-syntactic, and word formation principles. They also analyze the most common translation techniques used by the translators when translating specialized vocabulary in medical popular science articles into Russian.

Abstract:The work provides the insight intothe study of the structuraland semantic features as well as methods of translatingthe English two- and multi- word terminological units of the professional languages of mechanicalengineeringand electrical engineering.It is notedthat terminology is one of the main stylistic features of scientific and technical style. All termsaccording totheir structure can besimple, compoundand multi- word terminological units . The latter are the most difficult to understand and translate whileworking with vocabulary of scientific and technical literature. Based on the number of term elements and the nature of the semantic relations between them, the multi- word terminological units are divided into two main groups: two-component and multi-component terms. It isconsideredthatthere is a general tendency for the dominant use of multi- word terminological units in the textsof mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. The predominance of the composite nominations– terms-phrases – over the unambiguous ones has been consideredas one of the tendencies inthe development of modern terminologicalsystems of the branchesunder study.The specifics of professional languages of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering and their general tendency to the dominant use of terms-phrases are outlined. The branching and dynamic development of these industries determines the production of terms with two- and multicomponent structures. Such a structure is able to show the capacious semantics of a particular terminological phrase. The advantage of multi- word terminological units over one-word ones is defined as one of the active tendencies of developing modern terminological systems of the branches under study.Peculiarities of translating the English terms-phrases in the professional languages of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering into the Ukrainian language are considered. The main methods of translation of the analyzed two- and multi- word terminological units are outlined, which are as follows: loan translation (calque), translation by using the genitive case, translation by changing the order of the components of the attributive group, translation by various prepositions, compression, descriptive translation, addition.
Using search engines as a retrieval tool for translating newly coined expressions and terminology between Chinese and English

Abstract:Abstract Translating terminology and newly coined expressions is a daunting challenge for technical translators. Translation of such words or phrases between, e.g. Chinese and English has received little help from dictionaries. With this as motivation, this study explores four methods by analysing results from an experiment with search engines as a retrieval tool for tackling such translation tasks. Specifically, taking 700 new terminologies from The Oxford English Dictionary as the research objects, this study experimentally examines the four terminology translation extraction methods. For each method, the effectiveness is assessed. This article finds that template-based and dictionary-based translation extraction methods have the highest accuracy rates of 86 and 89%, respectively. The semantic prediction search method proves to be the most flexible with the highest retrieval rate of 95%, although its results are not always accurate. Based on the results, this study proposes a model for quantitatively and qualitatively verifying the accuracy of translation results obtained from search engines. The quantitative analysis examines the use frequency of all translations obtained, while the qualitative analysis looks into their contexts. These findings have implications for translating, via search engine retrieval tools, terminology between other language pairs.

Abstract:Mining terminology translation from a large amount of Web data can be applied in many fields such as reading/writing assistant, machine translation and cross-language information retrieval. How to find more comprehensive results from the Web and obtain the boundary of candidate translations, and how to remove irrelevant noises and rank the remained candidates are the challenging issues. In this paper, after reviewing and analyzing all possible methods of acquiring translations, a feasible statistics-based method is proposed to mine terminology translation from the Web. In the proposed method, on the basis of an analysis of different forms of term translation distributions, character-based string frequency estimation is presented to construct term translation candidates for exploring more translations and their boundaries, and then sort-based subset deletion and mutual information methods are respectively proposed to deal with subset redundancy information and prefix/suffix redundancy information formed in the process of estimation. Extensive experiments on two test sets of 401 and 3511 English terms validate that our system has better performance.

Abstract:For completeness and accuracy of meaning, most of new concepts, both in Russian and in English, are expressed using phrases or compound words. But multicomponent terms, are often quite cumbersome. That is why there is a need to shorten terms and use abbreviations. The object of the study is the phenomenon of abbreviation of English terminology in business and scientific discourse. The subject of the work is the analysis of the structural and semantic features of the abbreviation lexical units, the ways of forming English-language abbreviations and their translation into Russian. The article uses comparative research method to compare complete terms and their abbreviations to identify structural and semantic transformations; method for analyzing semantic structure of abbreviations to establish their common and distinctive properties; method of contextual analysis to determine the degree of linguistic economy through the use of abbreviations and to identify differences between semantically similar abbreviations. The novelty of the research lies in the identification, analysis and generalization of ways of education and translation of English-language abbreviations in business and scientific communications. Inaccurate translation of abbreviations can change or distort the intended meaning. To transfer foreign-language abbreviations into Russian, such methods can be used as searching for a translation equivalent, full borrowing of an abbreviation, transliteration, transcription, translation of an abbreviation, translation of an abbreviation and creation of an abbreviation in the translating language, transcription of the letter-by-letter pronunciation of an abbreviation. Among the main difficulties of translating abbreviations are difficulties in identifying abbreviations and problems of their correlation with complete lexical unit, as well as the phenomenon of homonymy of terminological units. It is important to take into account the normalization of translated text and its compliance with literary and linguistic norms and cultural traditions of target language.

Abstract:The article highlights the peculiarities of the carried-out translation analysis of metaphorical terms in English specialized texts of natural sciences and technical sciences. During the study of English scientific and technical texts, the method of critical literature analysis and contextual analysis was applied, which involved the study of figurative constructions in the context of their use. Figurative means of various types were investigated using descriptive and comparative methods. The continuous sampling method was used to extract the corpus of the study. Systematization and generalization of the research results was carried out using the descriptive method. It is emphasized that the most common figurative device used in the scientific style is a metaphor. Since in modern scientific literature, a metaphor is most often used to describe an object or phenomenon, it can acquire a terminological character due to the figurative reinterpretation of commonly used words and the stability of the form. In the process of terminologicalization, the metaphor loses a significant part of its inherent imagery and the possibility of double interpretation, therefore, such a metaphor is quite characteristic of modern scientific prose. Since the main function of the terminological metaphor is informative, and therefore its use does not violate the functional features of the scientific style. It is noted that terminological metaphors, which are widely used in scientific style texts, can be translated into Ukrainian by a counterpart with a similar or changed character of imagery and a non-metaphorical word, conveying only the denotative meaning of the metaphor-term.
