Abstract:A longitudinal-torsional hybrid type ultrasonic motor offers bigger torque and lower revolution speed with respect to other kinds of ultrasonic motors , but it is difficult to adjust longitudinal and torsional phase at a particular frequency . A newly radial-torsional vibration hybrid type ultrasonic motor with hollow structure is put forward , which has one longitudinal piezoelectric ceramic element and one torsional piezoelectric ceramic element. It’s easy to make frequencies of two phases the same and take use of vibration power . The former model is improved and a Φ 60 mm prototype is fabricated . The obtained experimental results verify the basic principle of the motor. The no-load velocity and maximum torque for a typical motor are 40 r/min and 3.2N·m . This kind of motor is smaller and lighter than the former ones.
Research and application on piezoelectric ceramic component with shear modes for micro-ultrasonic motor

Abstract:Commonly, the shear piezoelectric constant value for d15 is almost two times higher than those for d33 and d31. Also the value of share electro-mechanical coupling coefficient k15 is higher than those of k31 and k33. Sometimes a design for ultrasonic motor based on share coefficients d15 has the potential for superior performance. In the paper, we propose a new mechanism for exciting shear-bending vibration in piezoelectric ceramic rod. A solid piezoelectric ceramic rod is polarized along its axial direction. The surface of the cylindrical rod used as an electrode is plated with nickel. The cylindrical electrode was divided into four pairs and each pair has two parts symmetrically along the axes. If opposite voltage signals are applied to the electrode parts which are opposite on circumferential direction or along the axial direction, a shearing strain should be induced on the piezoelectric ceramic. Using a pair of alternating voltage signals (sine and cosine) on four pairs of electrodes, a shaking head vibration (wobbling motion) was generated circumferentially. A mini-ultrasonic motor prototype with this concept and a diameter of 6mm was designed. And its characteristics were determined experimentally. The design concept presented in this paper is much promising for applications in small motors, especially in those with piezoelectric ceramic rod stators with a large diameter-length ratio.

Abstract:A longitudinal-torsional hybrid-type ultrasonic motor has larger torque and lower revolution speed compared with other kinds of ultrasonic motors. It drives devices directly and precisely, so it is adaptable to many fields, especially aeronautics and astronautics, as a servo actuator. Due to the different sound propagation speeds of longitudinal and torsional vibrations in the stator, it is difficult to match resonant frequencies of longitudinal and torsional vibrations. In this paper, a new radial-torsional vibration hybrid-type ultrasonic motor is put forward, which utilizes longitudinal vibration derived from radial vibration by the Poisson effect. The short, hollow cylindrical structure easily makes resonant frequencies of first-order radial and torsional vibrations into degeneracy. First, the new structure of the motor is presented. Second, the principle of matching the resonant frequencies is developed, and the motor geometry is optimized by ANSYS software. Finally, a 60-mm diameter prototype is fabricated, which performs well. The no-load velocity and maximum torque are 25 r/min and 5 N.m, respectively. This kind of motor is small, light, and noiseless.

Abstract:Uhrasanic motor's characteristics could change a lot in vacuum, as lacking of air. This paper described the motor's mechanical characteristics both in normal and vacuum condition with three fi'iction materials, agglomerated-PTFE, unag-glomerated-PTFE and epoxy-colophony. The max torque goes up in vacuum expect sepoxy-coiophony, and the max speed all goes down. To find the reason, this paper give the dynamic friction coefficient's experiment and finded it increasing up in convention-al, standing wave and travelling wave from normal to vacuum except sepoxy-colophony. Then, this paper tested the transient char-acteristics in vacuum, and finded the starting time and starting voltage grow up when the vacuum' degree went up to 10-2Pa. At last, this paper give the acoustic levitation force's numerical and fined it is about 1% in preload, which deserted the affect of acoustic levitation force in vacuum. The most factors which affecting the motor's mechanical characteristics are dynamic friction coefficient and the starting and run-time resistance.

Abstract:Ultrasonic motors use the converse piezoelectric effect to excite the resonant mode of a vibrator and employ the friction between vibrator and rotor to drive. The methods of exciting ultrasonic motors could be classified into three categories according to the number of vibration modes used to superpose the periodic movement of a point on contact surface. They are single vibration mode,superposition of two vibration modes with same frequency and superposition of multi-vibration-mode. Then the principles and characteristics of typical ones of each category were presented. At last,the development of the exciting method of ultrasonic motors was addressed.

Abstract:Some kinds of piezoelectric ceramic components using piezoelectric d15 effect, such as ring type one, tube type one,and disk type one were introduced in this paper. The driving mechanisms of the piezoelectric ceramic components with piezoelectric d15 effect in the ultrasonic motors were also introduced.At last a new mechanism for exciting shear-bending vibration in piezoelectric ceramic rod were proposed.A mini-ultrasonic motor prototype with this concept was designed.
An In-plane Traveling Wave Rotary Ultrasonic Motor with a Single-vibrator

Abstract:An in-plane traveling wave rotary ultrasonic motor with a single-vibrator was proposed. The motor is composed of an annular stator with a bar vibrator and two cone shaped rotors. The rotors were pressed in contact to the borders of the inner surface of the stator by means of an opportune pre-pressure system. The bar vibrator has a sandwich-like configuration. Two set piezoelectric elements were bolded in it. One is used to excite the longitudinal vibration, and the other is used to excite the flexural vibration of the bar. The effective excitation of the in-plane traveling wave in the stator, with the longitudinal vibration and the bending vibration in the bar vibrator, has been simulated with FEM (finite element method). The performance characteristics achieved by the prototype are: the rotary speed without load 36 r/min, the stall torque 0.25 N·m, the start-up time 2.53 ms, the shutdown time 3.48 ms. This motor with only one vibrator is simple and compact, and shows promise to drive joints of robot or to regulate the gesture of some mechanics.
Double-vibrator Linear Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Motor

Abstract:A double-vibrator linear ultrasonic motor was designed to drive an exact linear transmission system.The motor consists of two symmetrical vibrators which use the bending modes to control the motion.Each vibrator has one piezoelectric stack consisting of four PZT-4 piezoelectric pieces with their centers all aligned along an axis.Then,the position of flexible bracket was determined.Simulations show that the motor works in B3 mode.The motor was tested on an exact linear transmission system.With low initial forces and Up-p voltage of 311 V,the maximum velocity with no load V0 was 704 mm/s.When Up-p was 226 V and the initial force F0 was 12.69 N,the motor had a pull force F of 2.1 N.Thus,the results show that the motor can be used to drive exact linear transmission systems.

Abstract:A new type linear USM with double-driving feet has been developed. The stator consists of eight piezoelectric ceramic plates and one brass plate. Piezoelectric ceramics plates are polarized along the thickness and are symmetrically bonded to the two surfaces of one rectangle brass plate. Double-driving feet are assembled on the same side of the brass plate. The working vibration mode is a composite in-plane bimode, which consists of the first longitudinal in-plane vibration mode and the second bending one. The basic size of the linear USM is determined carefully by FEA. The characteristics of the prototype motor were measured experimentally.
A Novel Traveling Wave Ultrasonic Motor Using a Bar Shaped Transducer

Abstract:A novel traveling wave ultrasonic motor was proposed. The structure of the motor is rather simple and different from the conventional traveling wave ultrasonic motors. Its production processes are very convenient. It is composed of a stator constituted with a ring and a bar shaped transducer and two cone shaped rotors. The rotors were pressed on inner surface of the ring by means of a pre-pressure system. The bar shaped transducer has a sandwich-like configuration, where two sets of piezoelectric element are bolted. One set excites a longitudinal vibration of the bar, and the other set excites a flexural vibration of the bar. The ring’s traveling wave excited with the longitudinal vibration and the bending vibration of the bar transducer was simulated with FEM (finite element method). The prototype of the motor was made and investigated experimentally for its performance. Its maximum torque and rotating speed are 0.25 N · m and 50 r/min, respectively.

Abstract:A travelling-wave non-contact ultrasonic motor is proposed, whose stator is a circular cylindrical vibrator. The rectangle piezoelectric ceramics bonded on the outer surface of the vibrator are used as exciting supply. The exciting principle of travelling-wave along the circumferential direction of the vibrator is studied systematically. The relationships among the exciting supplies on space and time domains are given, which provide the theoretical foundation for designing and exciting the stator. Moreover, the connecting method between electric power and exciting supply is also discussed. Based on those theories, the prototype of the motor is fabricated for trial, and the revolution property is well.

Abstract:This paper studies on a rotatory type of standing wave ultrasonic motor with single phase driver.Though the prototype of ultrasonic motor has been proposed up early,its motion mechanism is still standing on the qualitative analysis.The teeth on the stator of the motor are the key section of transmitting motion.Therefore study on the motion characteristics of the teeth is meaningful for the further study on the contact process between the stator and the rotor.By assuming a operating mode,theoretical deduction and simulation for the motion equation and locus of a teeth top on the stator of the motor are made.Then the locus of the tooth top can be obtained.
A Study of Linear Piezoelectric Inchworm Motor Using Position Gripped Ultrasonic Vibrator

Abstract:This paper reports a kind of linear piezoelectric inchworm motor using position-gripped ultrasonic vibrator which is a ringshaped three-pile piece construction. The position-gripped vibrator and guide shaft of the motor constitute the friction pair. When the vibrator is in the resonance state, the ratio of moving friction coeff cient to static one will decrease to-0.1. The driving voltage of position-gripped vibrator is only ±80V (Vp-p). The velocities of motor are 0-2 mm/min; the displacement resolution is 50 nm, and motor's techniques is simple.

Abstract:We developed a disk-type non-contact ultrasonic motor based on B22 vibration mode. The rotors of SU-8 photoresist are fabricated by the UV-LIGA process to control their shapes and thicknesses. So the structures of them are optimized by the experiments. It is found that the revolution speed of disk-type non-contact ultrasonic motor not only depends on the vibration amplitude of the stator, but also the weight and construction of the rotors. The maximum revolution speed of the optimal rotor is 3569rpm at the input voltage of 20V and the driving frequency of 45.6kHz. The exciting principle of traveling wave is presented with theoretical equations. The electric signals applied to the piezoelectric ceramic are designed by the principle. The natural frequency and corresponding vibration mode are calculated and analyzed using finite element method. It is shown that experimental results are in good agreement with simulation, which verifies the effectiveness of the finite element model. Moreover, the levitation distance between the stator and rotor is measured by a CCD laser displacement transducer.

Abstract:A novel rocking head type piezoelectric ultrasonic motor is designed. A square cylinder of bronze with a hole is used as the stator. 4 piezoelectric plates of PZT- 4 polarized in the thickness direction are bonded to the sides of the bar. The outer size of the motor is less than 6 mmx6 mmx10 mm. Finite element (FEA) of the stator has been made. It is found that the resonant frequency of first bending mode is 125.5 kHz. The working process of the motor is simulated by harmonic analysis, by which the vibration amplitude is calculated. Thus the taper angle of contact surface can be obtained. The Doppler Laser Vibrometer (Polytec 300-F) was used to measure the vibration characteristic of the ultrasonic motor. It shows that the resonant frequency of first bending mode is about 129.6 kHz, which coincides with the FEM result very well. Furthermore, the relationship between the output of piezoelectric motor and different dimensions of the structure are discussed, such as the thickness of piezoelectric ceramic, the diameter of hole in the quadrate bar. That can be useful to design and optimize the piezoelectric ultrasonic micromotor.

Abstract:A new structure of piezoelectric motor is studied, which is driven by ultrasonic power. The motor is composed of a threaded nut and screw. The piezoelectric ceramic is pasted to the nut. The nut will vibrate, similarly to the kind of a Â¿Hula Hoop motionÂ¿, under the driven of ultrasonic power. Then the vibration becomes a linear motion by the fiction of the screw and the nut. Based on the theory of vibration of cantilever beam, the principle of the motor has been described. It is found that the trajectory of the particle of the nut is an elliptical motion. According to the design, a prototype was fabricated. Experiments show the speed of the motor can reach 3 mm/s.

Abstract:The major properties of the traveling wave in the annular stator are analyzed. The elliptic motion of particles on the annular stator surface is compared with the elliptic motion of particles on the rectangular plate surface. Pointed out that partial inside areas of the annular stator can drive the rotor. According to this analysis, a thin-type ultrasonic motor has been fabricated. The performance test of the stator and the operating experiment of the motor have been finished. The experiment results show that the motor operates smoothly, and has a bigger output torque. In the experiment it is found that the motor can still operate normally with single-phase voltage and the mechanism of the phenomena is analyzed. Based on the mechanism, a new type of standing wave ultrasonic motor can be designed.

Abstract:In this study, a novel miniature I-shaped linear ultrasonic motor is proposed. The motor is constructed by two rectangular piezoelectric vibrators which are mounted in parallel with the slider to make the structure look like the letter "I". The symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the motor based on the first-order flexural vibrations of the two vibrators are chosen as the working modes. The finite element method is adopted to optimize the structure and study the vibration behavior of the motor. A prototype of the proposed linear ultrasonic motor is fabricated and its mechanical characteristics are tested. The dimension of the stator is 39.8 x 17.6 x 6 mm3 and the weight of the prototype is only 18.2 g. The typical outputs of the prototype are maximum speed of 364 mm/s, maximum thrust of 500 g and thrust-weight ratio of 24.47. The experimental results confirm that the developed linear ultrasonic motor has the advantages of structural design and miniaturization.
A New Type of Double Rotors Modal Transformation Ultrasonic Motor

Abstract:This paper presented a new type of double rotors modal transformation ultrasonic motor with fan-shaped-teeth and slot structure on its stator.This structure was able to change longitudinal vibration of piezoceramic into bending vibration of teeth and drive the rotor to rotate.Simulation analyses of finite element model were undertaken,including adjusting the driving frequency,calculating teeth amplitude transformation ratio,analyzing the effect of an inaccuracy in assembling,calculating the motion trace of a particle on the end face of the stator.A simplified contact model of stator and rotor was proposed,through which output torque of the motor in a harmonic status was calculated.At last,a prototype motor with size of Φ8 mm×10 mm was made.Experimental results show that the motor has a sound continuous running performance and when the driving voltage is 135 V,rotate speed can reach 475 r/min.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new type of circular ring traveling wave linear ultrasonic motor with incomplete teeth. The motor's movable slider is pressed against the end face of the tooth structure on the outer surface of the circular ring vibrator under a certain pre-pressure, four piezoelectric ceramic plates are evenly distributed at 90° intervals on the inner side of the circular structure, and four sets of driving teeth are arranged at 45° intervals from the position of the piezoelectric ceramic plates.When the motor is in operation, only one driving tooth works, and the life of the ultrasonic motor can be increased by rotating the different working teeth. The motor operates in two in-plane third-order bending modes that are orthogonal to each other at the same frequency. The dynamic design and simulation of the vibrator was carried out using ANSYS finite element software to analyze the effect of the structure on the mode. The principle prototype was fabricated, and the operating mode of the vibrator was measured using a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV), and the vibration characteristics and output performance of the prototype were tested. Experimental results show that the motor runs smoothly at the excitation voltage of 240 V peak-to-peak, the excitation frequency of 30.459 kHz and the pre-pressure of 0.6 N, with the maximum output force of 90 mN and the motor no-load speed of 102 mm/s.
