Abstract:A K2S2O8/Cu(OAc)2-mediated oxidative C-H/P-H cross-coupling of aldehyde hydrazones with diphenylphosphine oxide for the direct preparation of functionalized α-iminophosphine oxides is reported. The reaction shows good functional group tolerance and proceeds smoothly under mild conditions. This strategic protocol for C-P bond formation is facilitated by a net oxidative aminyl radical-polar crossover process.

Abstract:Despite remarkable progress in photocatalytic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT)-induced C(sp3)–H functionalization, achieving C(sp3)–H to C(sp3)–P transformation by the HAT process remains highly challenging due to P-reagents’ compatibility issues. α-Aminophosphonic acids have shown great potential in medicinal chemistry, yet their synthesis is hindered by limited substrate scopes, poor functional group tolerance, and reliance on prefunctionalized substrates, restricting their broad applications. Herein, we report photocatalytic HAT-induced α-C(sp3)–H phosphonylation of aliphatic amines, providing rapid access to structurally diverse α-aminophosphonates from abundant amines. Leveraging intramolecular HAT, radical polar crossover, and an Arbuzov-type phosphonylation cascade, the challenges associated with HAT-induced C(sp3)–H to C(sp3)–P transformation were overcome. This protocol features base-free, redox-neutral, and mild conditions and broad scopes, employing amines as limiting reagents, and allows for late-stage phosphonylation of complex drug molecules possessing amine moieties.

Abstract:The development of efficient and sustainable methods for carbon-phosphorus bond formation is of great importance due to the wide application of organophosphorus compounds in chemistry, material sciences and biology. Previous C-H phosphorylation reactions under nonelectrochemical or electrochemical conditions require directing groups, transition metal catalysts, or chemical oxidants and suffer from limited scope. Herein we disclose a catalyst- and external oxidant-free, electrochemical C-H phosphorylation reaction of arenes in continuous flow for the synthesis of aryl phosphorus compounds. The C-P bond is formed through the reaction of arenes with anodically generated P-radical cations, a class of reactive intermediates remained unexplored for synthesis despite intensive studies of P-radicals. The high reactivity of the P-radical cations coupled with the mild conditions of the electrosynthesis ensures not only efficient reactions of arenes of diverse electronic properties but also selective late-stage functionalization of complex natural products and bioactive compounds. The synthetic utility of the electrochemical method is further demonstrated by the continuous production of 55.0 grams of one of the phosphonate products. Synthesis of aryl phosphorus compounds with electron-withdrawing substituents on the arene is difficult to do simply. Here the authors show a method to form aryl carbon-phosphorus bonds through electrochemistry, without requiring any catalyst or external oxidant.

Abstract:An efficient electrochemical oxidation of C-H (sp 3 ) bond was developed. Using water as both co-solvent and sole oxygen source, a series of arylketones was synthesized in good to excellent yields under the constant current of 6 mA without external oxidants, base or mediators. This electrochemical driven oxidation reaction has the advantages of simple operation and mild reaction conditions, as will provide a sustainable approach for alkane oxidation to aldehyde or ketone. We envision that our method will be useful for applications in the future industrial production of fine organic chemicals

Abstract:We herein report a direct electrochemical dehydrogenative CH phosphonylation of thiazoles derivatives with H2 evolution. Employing electricity as the green and sole oxidant, cheap metal as electrode, the anodic oxidation together with cathodic hydrogen evolution process provides a green and efficient strategy for CH phosphonylation. A diverse range of phosphorus products were constructed under external metal and oxidant-free conditions at ambient temperature, featuring atom economy, simple operation and wide reaction scope.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed branched and enantioselective allylic substitution of monosubstituted precursors with carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and fluoride nucleophiles has been well-established. However, such a selective carbon-phosphorus bond formation has not been realized probably due to the catalyst deactivation by the strong coordinating nature of phosphinylating reagents. Herein, we report a Rh-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective synthesis of allylic phosphine oxides in the presence of a chiral bisoxazoline-phosphine ligand. The application of α-hydroxylalkylphosphine oxides to keep the low concentration of the secondary phosphine oxides is essential for the high yields. The addition of diphenyl phosphoric acid was found to not only activate allylic alcohols but also accelerate the carbon-phosphorus bond formation.
Robust Bio-derived Polyoxometalate Hybrid for Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Benzylic C(sp 3 )–H Bonds

Abstract:Utilization of natural resources to construct functional catalytic materials for challenging organic reactions is of great importance in the chemical community, which has achieved significant attention. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a robust bio-derived polyoxometalate (POM) hybrid by the reaction of the naturally occurring phytic acid (PhyA) with MoO3, and the obtained hybrid was denoted PhyA–Mo. Systematic studies revealed that the multi-phosphate structure of PhyA enabled the synthesized PhyA–Mo to simultaneously possess a higher concentration of surface-active oxygen species and more negatively charged Mo sites, which played the role of catalytically active sites for aerobic oxidation. These two types of active sites together enabled the PhyA–Mo to show outstanding catalytic activity for aerobic oxidation of benzylic C(sp3)–H in different substrates to generate various carbonyl compounds without using any additional initiator. Importantly, the fact of realizing aerobic oxidation of benzylic C(sp3)–H bonds efficiently over POM-based materials in the absence of any radical initiator represented the main finding and the major breakthrough. Especially, this work provided a general and useful strategy to improve the catalytic performance of POM-based materials by using phosphoric acids containing multi-phosphate groups.
