Abstract:The selective oxo-functionalization of hydrocarbons under mild conditions with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant continues to be a hot topic in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry. Though many oxidation protocols in combination with transition metal salts, enzymes, organometallic catalysts, or organocatalysts have been summarized recently, a review that focuses solely on the metal-free allylic/benzylic oxidation strategies with molecular oxygen is still unavailable. This critical review will summarize recent significant advances achieved in this important field under the scope of green chemistry, which covers the promising applications and brief mechanistic profiles involving three kinds of efficient catalysts, namely N-hydroxyimides, homogeneous/heterogeneous light-sensitive molecules, and heteroatom-doped carbon materials, and concerns the sustainability of these methods, as well as predicts the potential utilization of available but unreported analogous catalysts or catalytic systems in this field. Special emphasis will also be placed on the burgeoning metal-free strategies with visible light irradiation from the long-term greenness and sustainability of these oxidation processes due to their established appealing performances under ambient conditions.

Abstract:An aerobic acetoxyhydroxylation of alkenes cooperatively catalyzed by organic nitrite and palladium at room temperature using clean and cheap air as the sole oxidant has been developed. Various vicinal diols, diacetoxyalkanes, and dihalogenoalkanes have been synthesized. The gram-scale synthesis has also been approached. Vicinal difluorination and dichlorolation products have also been achieved via this reaction.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalyzed oxidation reactions are central components of organic chemistry. On behalf of green and sustainable chemistry, molecular oxygen (O-2) has been considered as an ideal oxidant due to its natural, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly characters, and therefore offers attractive academic and industrial prospects. In recent years, some powerful organic oxidation methods have been continuously developed. Among them, the use of molecular oxygen (O-2) as a green and sustainable oxidant has attracted considerable attentions. However, the development of new transition metal-catalyzed protocols using O-2 as an ideal oxidant is highly desirable but very challenging because of the low standard electrode potential of O-2 to reoxidize the transition-metal catalysts. In this Account, we highlight some of our progress toward the use of transition-metal catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions. Through the careful selection of ligand and the acidic additives, we have successfully realized the reoxidation of Cu, Pd, Mn, Fe, Ru, Rh, and bimetallic catalysts under O-2 or air atmosphere (1 atm) for the oxidative coupling, oxygenation reactions, oxidative C-H/C-C bond cleavage, oxidative annulation, and olefins difunctionalization reactions. Most of the reactions can tolerate a range of functional groups. These methods provide new strategies for the green synthesis of alkynes, (-keto)amides/esters, ketones/diones, O/N-heterocycles, -azido alcohols, and nitriles. The high efficiency, low cost, and simple operation under air make these methodologies very attractive and practical. We will also discuss the mechanisms of these reactions which might be useful to promote the new type of aerobic oxidative reaction design.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of organic molecules is a fundamentally important component of modern synthetic chemistry. In the past decades, direct oxidative C-H and C-C bond functionalization has proved to be one of the most efficient and straightforward methods to synthesize complex products from simple and readily available starting materials. Among these oxidative processes, the use of molecular oxygen as a green and sustainable oxidant has attracted considerable attention because of its highly atom-economical, abundant, and environmentally friendly characteristics. The development of new protocols using molecular oxygen as an ideal oxidant is highly desirable in oxidation chemistry. More importantly, the oxygenation reaction of simple molecules using molecular oxygen as the oxygen source offers one of the most ideal processes for the construction of O-containing compounds. Aerobic oxidation and oxygenation by enzymes, such as monooxygenase, tyrosinase, and dopamine β-monooxygenase, have been observed in some biological C-H bond hydroxylation processes. Encouraged by these biological transformations, transition-metal- or organocatalyst-catalyzed oxygenation through dioxygen activation has attracted academic and industrial prospects. In this Account, we describe some advances from our group in oxygenation via C-H/C-C bond activation with molecular oxygen as the oxidant and oxygen source for the synthesis of O-containing compounds. Under an atmosphere of O2 (1 atm) or air (1 atm), we have successfully incorporated one or two O atoms from O2 into simple and readily available substrates through C-H, C-C, C═C, and C≡C bond cleavage by transition-metal catalysis, organocatalysis, and photocatalysis. Moreover, we have devised cyclization reactions with molecular oxygen to construct O-heterocycles. Most of these transformations can tolerate a broad range of functional groups. Furthermore, on the basis of isotope labeling experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectral analysis, and other mechanistic studies, we have demonstrated that a single electron transfer process via a carbon radical, peroxide radical, or hydroxyl radical is involved in these aerobic oxidation and oxygenation reactions. These protocols provide new approaches for the green synthesis of various α-keto amides, α-keto esters, esters, ketones, aldehydes, formamides, 2-oxoacetamidines, 2-(1H)-pyridones, phenols, tertiary α-hydroxy carbonyls, p-quinols, β-azido alcohols, benzyl alcohols, tryptophols, and oxazoles, which have potential applications in the preparation of natural products, bioactive compounds, and functional materials. In most cases, inexpensive and low-toxicity Cu, Fe, Mn, or NHPI was found to be an efficient catalyst for the transformation. The high efficiency, low cost, high oxygen atom economy, broad substrate scope, and practical operation make the developed oxygenation system very attractive and practical. Moreover, the design of new types of molecular-oxygen- or air-based oxidation and oxygenation reactions can be anticipated.

Abstract:Herein, we report a Pd(II)-catalyzed nitrooxylation of unactivated methyl C(sp3)-H bonds using commercial available and easily manageable tert-butyl nitrite as the precursor of ONO2 radical under aerobic conditions. Environmentally benign molecular oxygen is used to initiate the generation of active radical reactant; it is also used as the terminal oxidant. A broad range of nitrooxylated aliphatic carboxamides were prepared in moderate to good yields under mild conditions.

Abstract:Dioxygen is an abundant, selective, and sustainable oxidant that is considered ideal for organic transformations. Oxidative processes using dioxygen as the electron acceptor without oxygen atom incorporation into the substrate are often referred to as oxidase reactions. However, the ground state triplet nature of dioxygen makes such a synthetically valuable pathway incompatible with simple free alkyl radicals, a ubiquitous class of reactive intermediates in the daily synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and complex natural products. Here we report that a combination of strong cage effect and bimetallic radical-polar crossover successfully addresses this problem, and opens up an oxidase pathway in cobalt hydride catalysis. This leads to a general and chemoselective method that tackles several key challenges in catalytic hydroamination, a fundamental transformation for amine synthesis. Under balloon pressure of dioxygen at ambient temperature, we demonstrate single-step intra- and intermolecular formal addition of a variety of nitrogen nucleophiles, including free amines, sulfonamides, amides, and carbamates, to unactivated alkenes in the presence of a silane, under solvent-free conditions. Important medicinal chemistry building blocks such as a-branched tertiary amines can be easily accessed, which are often difficult targets otherwise due to their steric hindrance and reducing nature. Mechanistic studies including stoichiometric experiments with well-defined organocobalt complexes provide support for the key hypothesis, which points the way to the development of sustainable processes involving other nucleophiles based on the same design elements.

Abstract:Palladium-catalysed oxidative carbonylation using oxygen as the oxidant is an economical approach; however, the gas mixture of CO and air has an explosive limit of 12.5–74.0% that could hamper extensive application of this process. Herein we report an electrochemical aminocarbonylation of alkynes under atmospheric pressure in an undivided cell without an external oxidant. The transformation has a broad substrate scope (83 examples) that involves primary amines and ammonium salts. Furthermore, mechanistic studies through cyclic voltammetry, in situ infrared and quick-scanning X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy reveal the reasons for this protocol proceeding smoothly under electrochemical conditions.

Abstract:An aerobic oxidation of aldehydes towards carboxylic acids in MeCN using 1 atm of pure oxygen or oxygen in air as the oxidant and a catalytic amount of single component catalyst, Fe(NO3)(3)9H(2)O, has been developed. Carboxylic acids with different synthetically useful functional groups were obtained at room temperature. Two mechanistic pathways have been proposed based on isotopic labeling, NMR monitoring, and control experiments. The practicality of this reaction has been demonstrated by conducting several 50 mmol-scale reactions using pure oxygen or an air-flow of similar to 30 mL/min.

Abstract:It is highly challenging but desirable to develop efficient catalysts for the activation of oxygen under mild conditions. Here, we report that various monodispersed metal nanoparticles (Ag, Pt, Co, Cu, Ni, Pd, and Au) efficiently activated molecular oxygen under mild conditions, illustrated by the aerobic oxidation of anilines to form either symmetric or asymmetric aromatic azo compounds. This discovery indicates that exploiting the catalytic power of nanoparticles could enable sustainable chemistry suitable for important oxidation reactions.
