Abstract:Room-temperature ortho-arylation and acetoxylation of anilides have been achieved using cationic palladium (Pd[TFA](+)) as catalyst and (NH4)(2)S2O8 as oxidant. Preliminary investigation of the mechanism suggests that palladium may have different oxidation states in the catalytic cycles of these two transformations.

Abstract:A novel palladium-catalyzed alkene diacetoxylation with dioxygen (O2) as both the sole oxidant and oxygen source is developed, which was identified by 18O-isotope labeling studies. Control experiments suggested that bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2pin2) played a dominant intermediary role in the formation of a C-O bond. This method performed good functional group tolerance with moderate to excellent yields, which could be successfully applied to the late-stage modification of natural products. Furthermore, an atmospheric pressure of dioxygen enhances the practicability of the protocol.

Abstract:Herein, we report a Pd(II)-catalyzed nitrooxylation of unactivated methyl C(sp3)-H bonds using commercial available and easily manageable tert-butyl nitrite as the precursor of ONO2 radical under aerobic conditions. Environmentally benign molecular oxygen is used to initiate the generation of active radical reactant; it is also used as the terminal oxidant. A broad range of nitrooxylated aliphatic carboxamides were prepared in moderate to good yields under mild conditions.

Abstract:Pd(OAc)2-catalyzed oxidative acetoxylation of benzylic C-H bonds utilizing a bidentate system has been explored. A variety of picolinoyl- or quinoline-2-carbonyl-protected toluidine derivatives react with PhI(OAc)2 in the presence of Pd(OAc)2 to afford the acetoxylated products in synthetically useful yields. A broad of functionalities, such as CH3, F, Cl, Br, I, COCH3, CO2Et, SO2CH3, and NO2, were tolerated. This transformation provides easy access to 2-hydroxymethylaniline derivatives.

Abstract:A novel palladium catalyzed hydroxylation of unactivated aliphatic C(sp(3))-H bonds was successfully developed. Different from conventional methods, water serves as the hydroxyl group source in the reaction. This new reaction demonstrates good reactivity and broad functional group tolerance. The C-H hydroxylated products can be readily transformed into various highly valuable chemicals via known transformations. Based on experimental and theoretical studies, a mechanism involving the Pd(II)/(IV) pathway is proposed for this hydroxylation reaction.

Abstract:A facile oxidative annulation of cyclohexanones and 2-aminophenyl ketones that uses molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant is described. The reaction provides a direct approach to acridines, a structural motif for a large number of fluorescent sensors, functional materials, ligands, and pharmaceuticals. In the presence of a palladium catalyst, high regioselectivity is observed when using non-symmetric 3-substituted cyclohexanones. With the use of oxygen as the terminal redox moderator, the electron gap of the global redox condensation process is filled and the reaction efficiency is significantly promoted. This protocol possesses many advantages such as using nonhazardous oxidant and readily available starting materials, high regioselectivity, and water as the only by-product.

Abstract:The direct functionalization of inert sp(3) CH bonds is limited to a few bond types. Although the activation of sp(3) CH bonds can be accomplished under mild conditions using palladium catalysts, the subsequent functionalization is not trivial due to the high energy required to convert palladium(II) to palladium(IV). We have systematically studied the palladium oxidation using computation-guided experiments for reactions involving strong chelation control. We find that a mild external ligand could significantly accelerate the oxidation of palladium(II) to palladium(IV) for strong bidentate directing groups. The acceleration is believed to be a result of ligand stabilization of both the palladium(II) and palladium(IV) intermediates.

Abstract:Easing oxygen into arenes Although oxygen is all around us, it is often surprisingly difficult to use it for selective chemical oxidations, necessitating more expensive, wasteful alternatives. Li et al. report that careful ligand optimization produces palladium catalysts that can efficiently activate oxygen to hydroxylate a variety of aryl and heteroaromatic rings adjacent to a carboxylic acid substituent. The ligand binds to palladium through pyridine and pyridone components, and the authors posit that tautomerization between dative and anionic coordination modes plays a role in its effectiveness. Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed intramolecular isoindolinone-forming aminooxygenation of alkenes with 1 atm of oxygen as oxidant is reported. A variety of functionalized alkenes and carboxylic acids can be used, and high yields were observed. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the aminooxygenation products were formed through the oxidation of a C-Pd(II) species using a strong oxidant, peroxide, which is generated in situ from a Pd(OAc)(2)/bpy/O-2/HOAc catalytic system.

The utilization of Pd(OAc)2 as a catalyst, along with catalytic AgNO2 as an electron transfer mediator, circumvents the need for stoichiometric oxidants and demonstrates significant practicality.
