Abstract:A rare earth oxyborate crystal K2Nd2O(BO3)2 has been grown by means of high temperature solution method for the first time. It crystallizes in monoclinic P21/c (No. 14) space group, and the lattice parameters are a=11.318(6) Å, b=6.575(4) Å, c=10.689(6) Å, β=117.062(12)°, and Z=4. The absorption spectrum, emission spectrum, and fluorescence lifetime of K2Nd2O(BO3)2 have been evaluated, and the foundational spectral parameters have been analysed according to the Judd‐Ofelt theory. The high concentration of activated ions (1.13×1022 ions/cm3), large absorption coefficient (87.63 cm‐1), long fluorescence lifetime (91.2 μs), and large emission cross section (2.03×10‐20 cm2) of K2Nd2O(BO3)2 suggest its potential applications of microchip lasers.

Among them, chiral materials exhibit polarization rotation and host topological properties. Borates often contribute to NCS and chiral structures via their triangular [BO3] and tetrahedral [BO4] units and their numerous superstructure motifs. However, no chiral compound with the linear [BO2] unit has been reported to date. Herein, an NCS and chiral mixed-alkali-metal borate, NaRb6(B4O5(OH)4)3(BO2), with a linear BO2- unit in the structure was synthesized and characterized. The structure features a combination of three types of basic building units (BBUs), [BO2], [BO3], and [BO4] with sp-, sp2-, and sp3-hybridization of boron atoms, respectively. It crystallizes in the trigonal space group R32 (No. 155), one of the 65 Sohncke space groups. Two enantiomers of NaRb6(B4O5(OH)4)3(BO2) were found, and their crystallographic relationships are discussed. These results not only expand the small family of NCS structures with the rare linear BO2- unit but also prompt recognition to the fact that NLO materials have generally overlooked the existence of two enantiomers in achiral Sohncke space groups.

Abstract:A novel beryllium borate CsBe4(BO3)(3) has been grown in crystals by high-temperature flux method using spontaneous nucleation technique for the first time. The crystal structure of this compound was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with lattice parameters a = 8.3914(5) A(sic), b = 13.3674(7) (sic)A, c = 6.4391 (3) A(sic), Z = 4, V = 722.28(7) A(sic)3. The crystal takes the same structure type as Rb analog based on the units of BO3 triangles and BeO4 tetrahedrons, displaying a three-dimensional tunnel structure with Cs atoms filling in the cages. The IR spectrum confirms the presence of BO3 groups and the UV vis IR diffuse reflectance spectrum exhibits this compound has a short UV cut-off edge below 200 nm. Abstract:A new metal methanesulfonate-derived borate compound, Na(S(OH)3CH3)(BO3) (NMSB), was successfully synthesized. NMSB crystallizes in the cubic and acentric space group P213 (no. 198) and may be grown as large, high-quality millimeter to centimeter-sized crystals through spontaneous crystallization under ambient conditions [a = 8.7714(2) Å, Z = 4]. NMSB exhibits a three-dimensional structure composed of a new methylsulfanetriol functional group, [S(OH)3CH3]2+, and extended H-bonding with planar [BO3]3- groups. The framework is formed by the Lewis acid-base reaction of SO: → HOB, structurally and charge-balanced by distorted NaO6 octahedra. The composition, structure, and facet-indices are confirmed by SC-XRD, PXRD, EDS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy shows that NMSB is transparent in the UV-vis region with an optical absorption edge in the deep-UV region, λabs < 200 nm. NMSB is thermally stable up to 200 °C and is highly soluble in water. This new compound exhibits unique borate chemistry as well as insights into underexplored methanesulfonate-derived salts as optical materials.

Abstract:A new phase of the compound PbBiBO4 has been successfully synthesized via the standard solid-state reaction, and the crystal structure has been determined from X-ray monocrystal diffraction data. It crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Cmca (No. 64) with lattice constants a=10.782(3)Å, b=10.502(3)Å, c=7.477(2)Å, Z=8. The crystal structure is characterized by a three-dimensional structure consisting of BiO6 octahedra, PbO4 tetrahedra and BO3 triangles. The BiO6 octahedra compose the layers through the O(2) atoms and O(3) atoms along the [101] direction, which connects the BO3 trigonal groups by sharing the O(3) and two O(1) atoms and links the PbO4 tetrahedra through the O(2) atoms. The UV–Vis–NIR Diffuse-Reflectance spectrum shows that the ultraviolet cutoff edge for the PbBiBO4 crystal is about 310nm. Functional groups in the sample were identified by Infrared spectrum.

Abstract:Yb26B12O57, a rare earth oxyborate previously assigned as Yb3BO6, has been studied by various techniques including neutron and X-ray diffraction, 11B NMR spectroscopy, electron diffraction and high angle angular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM). It crystallizes in the space group C2/m with cell parameters of a=24.5780(4)Å, b=3.58372(5)Å, c=14.3128(3)Å and β=115.079(1)°. The structure consists of slabs of rare earth sesquioxide and borate groups. The sesquioxide part is identified from the structural refinement, and is observed from HADDF-STEM image, while elucidation of borate groups is not straightforward. An additional oxygen atom (O31), which links two B2O5 groups into a B4O11 polyanion, is identified from the analysis of neutron diffraction data. The occupancy of this oxygen site is only quarter, which results in a random distribution of B4O11 and B2O5 groups along the b-direction. The chemical formula of ytterbium oxyborate is Yb26(BO3)4(B2O5)2(B4O11)O24, instead of the simple stoichiometric formula Yb3BO6. This compound is paramagnetic but its susceptibility deviated from the Curie–Weiss law at low temperature.
A Rare-Earth-Based Borate Optical Crystal with Enlarged Dihedral Angles of Distinct [BO3] Groups Exhibiting a Wide UV Transparent Range

Abstract:Borates, as advanced optical materials, have garnered wide interest due to their diverse structural configurations and great potential for applications in the ultraviolet (UV) regions. Herein, we synthesized a new rare-earth borate crystal, namely, K2NaYB2O6, which is classified as one of the ABReB2O6 compounds, where A and B represent alkali metal and Re denotes rare-earth metal. K2NaYB2O6 adopts in the monoclinic space group P21/c (No. 14), showcasing a three-dimensional (3D) framework composed of a planar triangular configuration of [BO3] units and distortive [YO7] polyhedra. Notably, both dihedral angles between distinct [BO3] units reach 79.6°, which represents an unprecedented structural feature in monoclinic ABReB2O6-type crystals. Moreover, the compound has a short UV absorption edge at around 204 nm, corresponding to a wide band gap of approximately 5.67 eV. Additionally, it possesses a moderate birefringence of 0.028 at 1064 nm. Further analysis utilizing theoretical calculations suggests that the optical behaviors of K2NaYB2O6 are mainly governed by its basic structural unit [BO3] triangles and distorted [YO7] polyhedra. These findings enrich the structure chemistry of rare-earth borates and offer valuable insights for the design of optical crystals in the UV wavelength range.
KNa2La2(BO3)3: a shortite-type lanthanide borate exhibiting strong nonlinear optical activity induced by isolated [BO3] triangles and distorted [LaO9] polyhedra

Abstract:The targeted synthesis of ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and wide transparency window remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a prospective rare-earth borate UV NLO crystal, KNa 2 La 2 (BO 3 ) 3 , was extracted by spontaneous crystallization using a flux method. The title compound crystallizes into the acentric orthorhombic space group Amm 2 (no. 38), analogous to those of shortite, and affords a three-dimensional framework built from planar [BO 3 ] triangles and distorted [LaO 9 ] motifs. The optical spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that KNa 2 La 2 (BO 3 ) 3 displays a short cutoff edge of 212 nm, accompanied by a wide band gap of 5.3 eV. Notably, it achieves an enhanced phase-matching SHG efficiency of 2.6 × KDP, comparable with those of the other NLO rare earth borate oxide crystals. Besides, theoretical analyses revealed that the optimized optical polarizability of KNa 2 La 2 (BO 3 ) 3 is predominantly ascribed to the cooperative effects of the isolated [BO 3 ] and distortive [LaO 9 ] structural units. This finding showcases a promising UV NLO crystal and sheds light on further exploration of rare earth metal-based NLO materials with fascinating performances.

Abstract:Single and polycrystalline samples of Mg 2 – x Mn 1 + x BO 5 ( x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4) oxyborates have been obtained for the first time by spontaneous crystallization from the solution–melt and through a solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction studies have shown that compounds are crystallized with increasing manganese content in the ludwigite (space group Pbam )–hulsite (space group P 2/ m )–orthopinakiolite (space group Pbam ) series and belong to the "3 Å wallpaper" borate family. A common property of materials is the presence of octahedral complexes (walls) consisting of manganese ions with a mixed valence at even crystallographic sites. The dc magnetization and specific heat of the Mg 2 – x Mn 1 + x BO 5 ( x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4) compounds have been studied for the first time. These studies have shown that cooling is accompanied by magnetic transitions, which are due to the ordering of several magnetic subsystems.

Abstract:Enthusiasm for the exploration of nonlinear alkali metal borates remains high. Focusing on the Li-B-O-X (X = Cl and Br) system, two examples of noncentrosymmetric borates, Li3B8O13Cl and Li3B8O13Br, were obtained using a high-temperature solution method under vacuum conditions. Structurally, the Li3B8O13X crystals exhibit two independent alternately arranged three-dimensional B-O network structures formed by the basic building block unit B8O16. The performance measurements demonstrate their short ultraviolet cutoff edges. The theoretical calculation indicates that the BO3 units dominate the contribution to their large optical anisotropy with the birefringence, 0.094 and 0.088@1064 nm for Li3B8O13Cl and Li3B8O13Br, respectively.

Abstract:A novel sodium lead pentaborate, NaPbB5O9, has been successfully synthesized by standard solid-state reaction. The single-crystal X-ray structural analysis showed that NaPbB5O9 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a=6.5324(10) Å, b=13.0234(2) Å, c=8.5838(10) Å, β=104.971(10)°, and Z=4. The crystal structure is composed of double ring [B5O9]3− units, [PbO7] and [NaO7] polyhedra. [B5O9]3− groups connect with each other forming two-dimensional infinite ∞[B5O9]3− layers, while [PbO7] and [NaO7] polyhedra are located between the layers. [PbO7] polyhedra linked together via corner-sharing O atom forming novel infinite ∞[PbO6] chains along the c axis. The thermal behavior, IR spectrum and the optical diffuse reflectance spectrum of NaPbB5O9 were reported.

Abstract:Two neodymium orthoborate crystals of Cd4NdO(BO3)(3) and Ca3Nd3(BO3)(5) were successfully grown using the flux method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction exhibits that Cd4NdO(BO3)(3) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group of Cm with unit cell parameters a = 8.0536(14) angstrom, b = 15.872(2) angstrom, c = 3.5364(6) angstrom, beta = 100.268(7)degrees and Ca3Nd3(BO3)(5) has a hexagonal space group of P6(3)mc with cell parameters a = 10.4864(2)angstrom, c = 6.2665(1) angstrom. Both compounds have high Nd3+ concentration with 4.5 x 10(21) ions per cm(3) in Cd4NdO(BO3)(3) and 1.0 x 10(22) ions per cm(3) in Ca3Nd3(BO3)(5), respectively. The absorption and emission spectra as well as decay curves for the F-4(3/2) to I-4(11/2) transition of Nd3+ ions in the two compounds were measured at room temperature. The spectra indicate that both two crystals are potential materials as self-activated microchip laser media due to high Nd3+ contents.
Sr 2 Pb(BeB 5 O 10 )(BO 3 ): An Excellent Ultraviolet Nonlinear-Optical Beryllium Borate by the Pb-Modified Construction of a Conjugated System and Lone-Pair Effect

Abstract:The design of material by chemical and/or crystalline modification of a classic structure model benefits not only the optimized physical properties but also the controllability and efficiency. Herein, a new nonlinear-optical (NLO) beryllium borate crystal, Sr2Pb(BeB5O10)(BO3) (SPBBO), is successfully designed and synthesized by chemical and crystalline modification of the perovskite-like K3B6O10Cl NLO crystal. SPBBO displays a 3D BeB5O103– open-framework structure composed of interconnecting BeB5O13 groups with filled cationic Sr/Pb and anionic BO3 groups, which exhibits the striking enhancement of the second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response (8 × KDP) and birefringence (0.10) compared to the parent model. Replacement of K by Sr and Pb with a lone pair and replacement of Cl by conjugated BO3 result in the synergistic conjugation of Pb with host BeB5O103– and filled BO3 groups, contributing to the striking enhancement of the SHG and birefringence. Single-crystal measurements show that SPBBO has a short UV absorption edge of 280 nm with a wide energy band gap of 4.35 eV and an outstanding laser-induced resistant behavior with a remarkably high laser-induced damage threshold of 2100 MW cm–2. Abstract:Abstract More than 3900 crystalline borates, including borate minerals and synthetic inorganic borates, in addition to a wealth of industrially-important boron-containing glasses, have been discovered and characterized. Of these compounds, 99.9 % contain only the traditional triangular BO 3 and tetrahedral BO 4 units, which polymerize into superstructural motifs. Herein, a mixed metal K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) with linear BO 2 structural units was obtained, pushing the boundaries of structural diversity and providing a direct strategy toward the maximum thresholds of birefringence for optical materials design. 11 B solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a ubiquitous tool in the study of glasses and optical materials; here, density functional theory-based NMR crystallography guided the direct characterization of BO 2 structural units. The full anisotropic shift and quadrupolar tensors of linear BO 2 were extracted from K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) containing BO 2 , BO 3 , and BO 4 and serve as guides to the identification of this powerful moiety in future and, potentially, previously-characterized borate minerals, ceramics, and glasses.

Bismuth Borates: One-Dimensional Borate Chains and Nonlinear Optical Properties

Abstract:Three bismuth borates, Bi[B4O6(OH)(2)]OH (I), BiB2O4F (II), and Bi-3[B6O13(OH)] (III), were obtained in boric acid flux at low temperatures and their structures were determined by using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. All these three bismuth borates contain one-dimensional borate chains and crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space groups. I is a hydrated borate, crystallizing, in the space group PI with lattice constants a = 4.300(1) angstrom, b = 8.587(2) angstrom, c = 10.518(2) angstrom, alpha = 113.11(3)', 100.50(3)degrees, and beta = 90.36(3)degrees, and the borate chain consists of a 3-ring (2BO(3) + BO4) and a BO3 group. II is a fluoroborate, which crystallizes in the trigonal space group P3(2) with a = 6.7147(1) angstrom and c = 6.4688(1) angstrom, and the borate anion is a 3-fold helix chain formed by extensive linkage of three-membered borate rings (3BO(4)). III is also a hydrated borate with a structure that is closely related to 11, in which one-sixth of the borate groups are in triangular geometry (BOA which reduces the symmetry to P1, a = 6.6257(1) angstrom, b =6.6238(1) angstrom, c = 6.6541(1) angstrom, and alpha = 89.998(3)degrees, beta = 89.982(2)degrees, and gamma = 119.992(2)degrees. All these three bismuth borates exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.
