Abstract:Birefringence determined by optical anisotropy is one of the most pivotal and fundamental performance of optical materials. However, optimizing the birefringence remains a significant challenge. Herein, a simple and effective method of cation chemical substitution for improving the birefringence has been accomplished and three Y-based borates, namely LiNa2Y(BO3)2, RbNa2Y(BO3)2 and RbSrY(BO3)2 were successfully synthesized. They all have deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edges below 190nm. Single-crystal analysis reveals that LiNa2Y(BO3)2 and RbNa2Y(BO3)2 possess three-dimensional (3D) frameworks with small channels filled by alkali metals, while RbSrY(BO3)2 features a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure separated by alkali metal and alkali-earth metal cations. Their birefringence exhibits a progressive doubling increase, transitioning from LiNa2Y(BO3)2 (0.017 @ 532nm), RbNa2Y(BO3)2 (0.033 @ 532nm) to RbSrY(BO3)2 (0.070 @ 532nm). Using cation size arguments, coordination environment, and the arrangement of groups demonstrate that cation substitution have a decisive effect on the birefringence enhancement. In addition, other optical and thermal properties of the three title compounds were characterized. The structure–property relationships were analyzed by the first-principles calculations.

Abstract:The targeted synthesis of ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and wide transparency window remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a prospective rare-earth borate UV NLO crystal, KNa 2 La 2 (BO 3 ) 3 , was extracted by spontaneous crystallization using a flux method. The title compound crystallizes into the acentric orthorhombic space group Amm 2 (no. 38), analogous to those of shortite, and affords a three-dimensional framework built from planar [BO 3 ] triangles and distorted [LaO 9 ] motifs. The optical spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that KNa 2 La 2 (BO 3 ) 3 displays a short cutoff edge of 212 nm, accompanied by a wide band gap of 5.3 eV. Notably, it achieves an enhanced phase-matching SHG efficiency of 2.6 × KDP, comparable with those of the other NLO rare earth borate oxide crystals. Besides, theoretical analyses revealed that the optimized optical polarizability of KNa 2 La 2 (BO 3 ) 3 is predominantly ascribed to the cooperative effects of the isolated [BO 3 ] and distortive [LaO 9 ] structural units. This finding showcases a promising UV NLO crystal and sheds light on further exploration of rare earth metal-based NLO materials with fascinating performances.

Abstract:Exploration of new compounds belonging to unusual families is always attractive for the everlasting development of material science. Here, three isomorphic rare-earth sulfide borates RE3S3BO3 (RE = Nd, Tb, Dy) have been obtained via a facile metal oxide-boron-sulfur solid-state routine. Their centrosymmetric triclinic structures feature 3D framework built by three types of REO x S y units, viz. REOS6, REO4S3, and REO3S6. Their structural relationship with similar phases and lanthanide contraction rule are discussed. Their optical band gaps are measured to be 2.59–2.70 eV, and the corresponding theoretical calculations are also performed. This work enriches the rarely studied chalcogenide borate system and is conducive to discovering more inorganic materials.

Abstract:Borates have garnered a lot of attention in the realm of solid‐state chemistry due to their remarkable characteristics, in which the synthesis of borates with isolated [BO3] by adding rare‐earth elements is one of the main areas of structural design study. Five new mixed‐metal Y‐based rare‐earth borates, Ba2ZnY2(BO3)4, KNa2Y(BO3)2, Li2CsY4(BO3)5, LiRb2Y(BO3)2, and RbCaY(BO3)2, have been discovered using the high‐temperature solution approach. Isolated [BO3] clusters arranged in various configurations comprise their entire anionic framework, allowing for optical anisotropy tuning between 0.024 and 0.081 under 1064 nm. In this study, we characterize the relative placements of their [BO3] groups and examine how their structure affects their characteristics. The origin of their considerable optical anisotropy has been proven theoretically. This study unequivocally demonstrates that even a slight alteration to borates' anionic structure can result in a significant improvement in performance.

Abstract:The rapid developments of the deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) laser science and technology urgently demand the nonlinear optical crystals which have large band gap enough to transmit the deep-UV light. Herein, we synthesized a series of new rare earth beryllium borates: ReBe2B5O11 (Re = Y, Gd). The structures of all these materials, for both alpha and beta phases, are featured by a novel platelike infinite superlayer [Be2B5O11]3-. Each [Be2B5O11]3- layer is further connected to the neighbor superlayer through Re3+ cations coordinating with O atoms. The beta-ReBe2B5O11 (Re=Y, Gd) have relatively large nonlinear optical coefficients and short UV cut-off wavelength below 200nm. Our investigations indicate that they are promising deep-UV NLO crystals.

Abstract:A rare earth oxyborate crystal K2Nd2O(BO3)2 has been grown by means of high temperature solution method for the first time. It crystallizes in monoclinic P21/c (No. 14) space group, and the lattice parameters are a=11.318(6) Å, b=6.575(4) Å, c=10.689(6) Å, β=117.062(12)°, and Z=4. The absorption spectrum, emission spectrum, and fluorescence lifetime of K2Nd2O(BO3)2 have been evaluated, and the foundational spectral parameters have been analysed according to the Judd‐Ofelt theory. The high concentration of activated ions (1.13×1022 ions/cm3), large absorption coefficient (87.63 cm‐1), long fluorescence lifetime (91.2 μs), and large emission cross section (2.03×10‐20 cm2) of K2Nd2O(BO3)2 suggest its potential applications of microchip lasers.

Abstract:Nonlinear-optical (NLO) crystals capable of controlling and manipulating light to generate coherent radiation at challenging wavelengths are of significant interest. However, designing a new UV NLO crystal remains difficult due to the rigid requirements for structure and properties. Herein, we have successfully designed and synthesized a novel noncentrosymmetric (NCS) rare-earth borate UV NLO crystal, K3Y3(BO3)4, through the heterovalence substitution of YAl3(BO3)4. K3Y3(BO3)4 (KYBO) crystallizes in the NCS and polar space group of P63mc, with the structure formed by the interconnectioned BO3 triangles and YO8 polyhedra through corner-sharing and edge-sharing. The property measurements indicate that KYBO is second-harmonic-generation-active with a moderate response, ∼2 × KDP. Meanwhile, KYBO can exhibit a short UV cutoff edge (λcutoff < 190 nm), indicating its potential as a new UV or deep-UV NLO crystal.

Abstract:Borate is a rich source for the exploration of high-performance optical materials, but non-π-conjugated [BO 4 ] units behave with limited anisotropy. Non-π-conjugated [B(OH) 3 CH 3 ] units as novel deep-ultraviolet (DUV) building blocks are found by the intrinsic modification of the tetrahedra. The first methyl borate DUV optical crystal, NaB(OH) 3 CH 3 , is successfully synthesized, which improves the problem of the non-π-conjugated tetrahedra. Compared to the hydroxyborates NaB(OH) 4 with the same space group, NaB(OH) 3 CH 3 not only has a short absorption edge of 191 nm but also exhibits enhanced methyl-driven birefringence (≥0.051 at 546 nm). A NaB(OH) 3 CH 3 crystal can be grown from a simple solution evaporation process. Additionally, the [B(OH) 3 CH 3 ] unit is available as a new DUV birefringence-active functional group, which can balance the bandgap and birefringence. The [B(OH) 3 CH 3 ] unit is discovered to be useful for deep-ultraviolet optical crystal exploration and can combine with other deep-ultraviolet borate primitives to form rich DUV optical materials, which greatly promote the development of new DUV optical crystals with excellent properties and versatile structures.

Progress in Crystal Growth and Characterization of Materials

Abstract:Due to an increase in the requirement for ultraviolet and visible laser sources nonlinear optical crystals are gaining importance. Borate-based nonlinear optical crystals such as lithium borate LiB3O5 (LBO), CsLiB5O10 (CLBO), SrBe2B2O7 (SBBO), KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) and K2Al2B2O7 (KAB) have excellent transmission ranges extending from the ultraviolet into the infrared region. But their hygroscopic nature retards their use in real-time applications. Rare earth-based borate crystals such as rare earth calcium oxy borate RECa4O(BO3)3 (RECOB) and rare earth calcium borate RE2CaB10O19 (RECB) have excellent nonlinear optical behaviour and also allow the substitution of ‘laser-active’ ions to create ‘laser crystals’. Further they are non-hygroscopic which favours them in practical applications. A review on RECOB and RECB crystals is presented along with a discussion on our attempts to grow yttrium calcium oxy borate YCa4O(BO3)3 (YCOB), lanthanum calcium oxy borate LaCa4O(BO3)3 (LCOB), yttrium calcium borate Y2CaB10O19 (YCB) and lanthanum calcium borate La2CaB10O19 (LCB) crystals. These crystals possess excellent transmission properties combined with nonlinear optical behaviour. They also exhibit high laser damage threshold (LDT) values.

Abstract:The design of material by chemical and/or crystalline modification of a classic structure model benefits not only the optimized physical properties but also the controllability and efficiency. Herein, a new nonlinear-optical (NLO) beryllium borate crystal, Sr2Pb(BeB5O10)(BO3) (SPBBO), is successfully designed and synthesized by chemical and crystalline modification of the perovskite-like K3B6O10Cl NLO crystal. SPBBO displays a 3D BeB5O103– open-framework structure composed of interconnecting BeB5O13 groups with filled cationic Sr/Pb and anionic BO3 groups, which exhibits the striking enhancement of the second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response (8 × KDP) and birefringence (0.10) compared to the parent model. Replacement of K by Sr and Pb with a lone pair and replacement of Cl by conjugated BO3 result in the synergistic conjugation of Pb with host BeB5O103– and filled BO3 groups, contributing to the striking enhancement of the SHG and birefringence. Single-crystal measurements show that SPBBO has a short UV absorption edge of 280 nm with a wide energy band gap of 4.35 eV and an outstanding laser-induced resistant behavior with a remarkably high laser-induced damage threshold of 2100 MW cm–2. A-site cation manipulation of exemplary second harmonic generation response and optical anisotropy in rare-earth borates

Abstract:Ultraviolet nonlinear optical (UV NLO) materials have garnered significant interest for their prospective applications in advanced laser technologies. However, tailoring the desired structure in these materials remains a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a simple yet effective strategy for synthesizing rare-earth borates, K x Na3-x La2B3O9 (x = 2-3), by manipulating the A-site cations to induce structural evolution. Notably, K x Na3-x La2B3O9 undergoes a phase transition from the Pnc2 to the Amm2 space group by adjusting the K+ content to reach x = 2.6. Moreover, the target compounds exhibit strong phase-matching second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies, ranging from 1.3 to 3.3 times that of KDP (KH2PO4), and feature short UV cutoff edges of around 204-208 nm. Additionally, the correlation between microscopic polarizability, optical anisotropy, and the structural evolution of these materials was characterized through structural and theoretical analyses. These findings highlight the potential applications of K x Na3-x La2B3O9 as UV NLO materials and underscore the viability of manipulating A-site cations to fabricate NLO crystals with desirable properties.

Abstract:In virtue of the essential role in controlling polarized light, outstanding ultraviolet (UV) and deep-ultraviolet (DUV) birefringent crystals are imperative in many advanced optical instruments. To design the UV and DUV crystals with large birefringence, we paid more attention to combining the excellent gene, π-conjugated [BO3] unit and metal cations beneficial to blue-shift the cutoff edge; finally, two rare-earth borates Li3La2(BO3)3 and Li1.75Na1.25La2(BO3)3 have been synthesized using the high-temperature solution method. Compared with Na3La2(BO3)3, Li3La2(BO3)3 and Li1.75Na1.25La2(BO3)3 are isostructural, and the isolated [BO3] units are arranged nearly parallel to each other in the structure, which is conducive to generating a larger birefringence. The structural comparison between the two crystals and Na3La2(BO3)3 indicates that the various coordination environments of alkali metal cations play an important role in the evolution of the crystal structure from Li3La2(BO3)3 and Li1.75Na1.25La2(BO3)3 to Na3La2(BO3)3. This work can contribute to a better understanding of the enhancement in birefringence from Na3La2(BO3)3 (0.023 @ 1064 nm) to Li3La2(BO3)3 (0.078 @ 1064 nm) with the perspective of structure–property relationships. Abstract:Hyperoxia inhibits pulmonary bioenergetics, causing delayed alveolarization in mice. We hypothesized that mechanical ventilation (MV) also causes a failure of bioenergetics to support alveolarization. To test this hypothesis, neonatal mice were ventilated with room air for 8 hours (prolonged) or for 2 hours (brief) with 15 μl/g (aggressive) tidal volume (Tv), or for 8 hours with 8 μl/g (gentle) Tv. After 24 hours or 10 days of recovery, lung mitochondria were examined for adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-phosphorylating respiration, using complex I (C-I)-dependent, complex II (C-II)-dependent, or cytochrome C oxidase (C-IV)-dependent substrates, ATP production rate, and the activity of C-I and C-II. A separate cohort of mice was exposed to 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), a known uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation. At 10 days of recovery, pulmonary alveolarization and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were assessed. Sham-operated littermates were used as control mice. At 24 hours after aggressive MV, mitochondrial ATP production rates and the activity of C-I and C-II were significantly decreased compared with control mice. However, at 10 days of recovery, only mice exposed to prolonged-aggressive MV continued to exhibit significantly depressed mitochondrial respiration. This was associated with significantly poorer alveolarization and VEGF expression. In contrast, mice exposed to brief-aggressive or prolonged-gentle MV exhibited restored mitochondrial ADP-phosphorylation, normal alveolarization and pulmonary VEGF content. Exposure to DNP fully replicated the phenotype consistent with alveolar developmental arrest. Our data suggest that the failure of bioenergetics to support normal lung development caused by aggressive and prolonged ventilation should be considered a fundamental mechanism for the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in premature neonates.
Ba4B14O25: A Deep Ultraviolet Transparent Nonlinear Optical Crystal with Strong Second Harmonic Generation Response Achieved by a Boron‐Rich Closed‐Loop Strategy

Abstract:Applying the boron‐rich closed‐loop strategy, a new barium borate, Ba4B14O25, is designed and synthesized successfully. Benefiting from the high‐density π‐conjugated [BO3]3− groups and the fully closed‐loop [B14O25]8− framework, Ba4B14O25 exhibits excellent nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, including short UV cutoff edge (<200 nm), large second harmonic generation (SHG) response (3.0 × KDP) and phase‐matching capability, being a promising deep ultraviolet (DUV)‐transparent NLO candidate material. Discovering new deep ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is the current research hotspot. However, how to perfectly integrate several stringent performances into a crystal is a great challenge because of the natural incompatibility among them, particularly wide band gap and large NLO coefficient. To tackle the challenge, a boron‐rich closed‐loop strategy is supposed, based on which a new barium borate, Ba4B14O25, is designed and synthesized successfully via the high‐temperature solid‐state melting method. It features a highly polymeric 3D geometry with the closed‐loop anionic framework [B14O25]8− constructed by the fundamental building blocks [B14O33]24−. The high‐density π‐conjugated [BO3]3− groups and the fully closed‐loop B–O–B connections make Ba4B14O25 possess excellent NLO properties, including short UV cutoff edge (<200 nm), large second harmonic generation response (3.0 × KDP) and phase‐matching capability, being a promising DUV‐transparent NLO candidate material. The work provides a creative design strategy for the exploration of DUV NLO crystals.

Noncentrosymmetric Rare-Earth Borate Fluoride La 2 B 5 O 9 F 3 : A New Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Crystal with Enhanced Linear and Nonlinear Performance

Abstract:In crystal engineering, it is an effective and controllable approach to modify the electronic band structure and optimize crystal performances using rational chemical cosubstitution in a classic structure model. Herein, the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) rare-earth borate fluoride La2B5O9F3 was designed and synthesized successfully based on the extraordinarily stable M2B5O9X (M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Sn, Pb, and Eu; X = Cl, Br, and I) template. Moreover, all 70 rare-earth borate halides were discussed, and the ratio of crystallization in NCS group is only 17.1%, much lower than 34.9% in all anhydrous borates. Benefiting from the substitution of [MOX] by [LaOF] polyhedra with improved hyperpolarizability and anisotropy of polarizability, compared with the M2B5O9X family, La2B5O9F3 with optimized band structure exhibits the suitable SHG response (1.2 × KH2PO4 (KDP) @ 1064 nm), large band gap (6.58 eV), and moderate birefringence, which well achieves the optimal balance among the three critical parameters mentioned above for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications in the short-wavelength region. Early hospital discharge following mastectomy.

Abstract:Data involving 43 Consecutive patients undergoing either modified radical mastectomy, simple mastectomy, partial mastectomy, or axillary dissection following wide local excision over a fourmonth period were reviewed. Twenty-one patients were kept in the hospital after the operation until the drain was removed and 22 patients were instructed about drain care and were discharged with the drain in place. The postoperative hospital stay for the first group ranged from three to eight days (mean, 5.5 days), and for the second group, zero to five days (mean, 2.1 days). Time off from work for the employed patients in the first group ranged from 17 to 34 days (mean, 25.3 days), and for the second group, one to 28 days (mean, 14.3 days). Ninety-five percent of the patients discharged with the drain in place were pleased with the early discharge. The practice of delaying discharge following mastectomy until the drain is removed is unnecessary. Considerable cost containment can be achieved by earlier discharge. Patients experience a quick sense of well being and more rapid recovery as evidenced by less time off from work.

Abstract:Abstract More than 3900 crystalline borates, including borate minerals and synthetic inorganic borates, in addition to a wealth of industrially-important boron-containing glasses, have been discovered and characterized. Of these compounds, 99.9 % contain only the traditional triangular BO 3 and tetrahedral BO 4 units, which polymerize into superstructural motifs. Herein, a mixed metal K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) with linear BO 2 structural units was obtained, pushing the boundaries of structural diversity and providing a direct strategy toward the maximum thresholds of birefringence for optical materials design. 11 B solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a ubiquitous tool in the study of glasses and optical materials; here, density functional theory-based NMR crystallography guided the direct characterization of BO 2 structural units. The full anisotropic shift and quadrupolar tensors of linear BO 2 were extracted from K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) containing BO 2 , BO 3 , and BO 4 and serve as guides to the identification of this powerful moiety in future and, potentially, previously-characterized borate minerals, ceramics, and glasses.

Abstract:A new complex rare earth borate K 7 PbLu 2 B 15 O 30 was prepared by the spontaneous crystallization method. K 7 PbLu 2 B 15 O 30 is crystallized in the chiral trigonal space group R 32 with cell parameters a = b = 13.0893(3) Å, c = 15.2379(6) Å, α = β = 90°, γ = 120°, and Z = 3. The basic structure of the crystal can be seen as composed of B 5 O 10 groups and LuO 6 polyhedra sharing oxygen atoms, while K + and Pb 2+ fill the space to balance the charge. The UV transmission cut-off edge of K 7 PbLu 2 B 15 O 30 was less than 300 nm, and the powder SHG response was roughly 1.1 times that of KDP. Furthermore, a first-principles analysis was performed to see more about the relationship between the crystal structure and optical characteristics.

Abstract:Novel rare-earth borate KBaTbB2O6 was synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure of KBaTbB2O6 has been determined by the Rietveld analysis, which demonstrates that the final chemical composition is K0.46Ba0.54Tb0.49BO3 and KBaTbB2O6 is isomorphous with KBaY(BO3)2 and crystallizes in the planar trigonal [BO3]3− group R-3m with lattice parameters of a=5.4562(4) Å, c=17.8629(2) Å, and Z=3. Tunable emission in red wavelength range was realized by doping and controlling Eu3+ ions content into KBaTbB2O6. The critical energy transfer distance calculated by the concentration quenching theory was 6.64Å and the energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ took place via a resonance-type mechanism.

Abstract:Borates are favored by material scientists and chemists because of the significant electronegativity difference between B and O atoms and their flexible assembly modes resulting in abundant structures and excellent properties. For the design of deep-ultraviolet (DUV) optical crystals with excellent macroscopic performance, it is crucial to choose appropriate cations and anionic groups, and microscopically reasonable assembly patterns. Herein, by introducing covalent tetrahedra ([MO4], M = Mg, Al), two new mixed alkali metals and alkaline earth metals borates, Rb3MgB5O10 and LiBaAl(BO3)2, were synthesized using the melt method and high-temperature solution method. They contain M-B-O two-dimensional (2D) layers (2∞[MgB5O10] and 2∞[Al(BO3)2], respectively) composed of isolated B-O groups ([B5O10]5- and [BO3]3-, respectively) and metal-centered tetrahedral connectors ([MgO4]6- and [AlO4]5-, respectively). Combining experiments and theoretical calculations shows that the two compounds have short cutoff edges (<200 nm) and moderate birefringences. Further analysis manifests that the isolated [MO4] covalent tetrahedra can optimize the arrangement of anion groups, guarantee the balanced optical properties of materials, and points out the direction for further exploration of novel borate structures.
