Abstract:The structural stability, electronic structure, and superconductivity of cubic sodium hexaboride NaB6 are calculated from first principles using density functional theory (DFT). The calculations of phonon dispersion spectra, formation energy, and elastic constants indicate that the cubic NaB6 is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable, respectively. The cubic NaB6 has lower formation energy compared with the experimentally synthesized KB6. The calculated band structure and PDOS demonstrate the metallicity of NaB6. The superconducting transition temperatures at ambient pressure for NaB6 and KB6 are predicted to be 15.7 K with lambda= 0.60 and 14.6 K with lambda= 0.57, respectively.

Abstract:Three new complex borate compounds K7CaBi2B15O30, K7CaLa2B15O30 and K7BaBi2B15O30 have been synthesized by the high-temperature solution method. K7CaLa2B15O30 and K7CaBi2B15O30 crystallize in the chiral trigonal space group R32, while K7BaBi2B15O30 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic polar space group Pca21. All of the title compounds have similar three-dimensional crystal structures, which are composed of isolated B5O10 groups and LaO6 or BiO6 octahedra, and K+, Ca2+, and Ba2+ cations fill into the cavities to keep charge balance. Based on our research, in the system of K7MIIRE2B15O30 (MII = Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd, Pb, K/RE0.5; RE = Sc, Y, La, Gd, Lu, Bi), K7BaBi2B15O30 is unique and crystallizes in a different space group, which enriches the structural chemistry of borate. Detailed structural analyses indicate that the structural variation is due to the difference in size and coordination number of the alkaline-earth metal cations. Besides, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy analysis and the second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurement on the powder samples show that K7CaBi2B15O30 exhibits a UV cutoff edge (about 282 nm) and a moderate SHG response (about 0.6 × KDP). In addition, thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy were also presented. To better understand the structure-property relationships of the title compounds, the first-principles calculations have been performed.

Abstract:Three new open-framework transition-metal borophosphates Na5(H3O){M(II)3[B3O3(OH)]3(PO4)6}.2H2O (M(II) = Mn, Co, Ni) (denoted as MBPO-CJ25) have been synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the three compounds possess isostructural three-dimensional (3D) open frameworks with one-dimensional 12-ring channels along the [001] direction. Notably, the structure can also be viewed as composed of metal phosphate layers [M(II)(PO4)2]4- with Kagomé topology, which are further connected by [B3O7(OH)] triborates, giving rise to a 3D open framework. The guest water molecules locate in the 12-ring channels. Partial Na+ ions reside in the 10-ring side pockets within the wall of the 12-ring channels, and the other Na+ ions and protonated water molecules locate in the 6-ring windows delimited by MO6 and PO4 polyhedra to compensate for the negative charges of the anionic framework. These compounds show a high thermal stability and are stable upon calcinations at ca. 500 degrees C. Ionic conductivities, due to the motion of Na+ ions, are measured for these three compounds. They have similar activation energies of 1.13-1.25 eV and conductivities of 2.7 x 10(-7)-9.9 x 10(-7) S cm(-1) at 300 degrees C. Magnetic measurements reveal that there are very weak antiferromagnetic interactions among the metal centers of the three compounds. Abstract:A new class of compounds, Bi2MNbO7 (M=Al, Ga, In), were synthesized by the solid-state reaction and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and Rietveld structure refinement. The optical absorption and structural properties of Bi2MNbO7 (M=Al, Ga, In) were investigated. These compounds crystallize in the same pyrochlore structure, but the lattice parameters decrease with decreasing M (M=Al, Ga, In) ionic radii. The band gaps of the Bi2MNbO7 (M=Al, Ga, In) compounds were estimated to be about 2.9, 2.75 and 2.7 eV, respectively.

Abstract:Two new bismuth hydroxyl borates, Bi(2)O(2)[B(3)O(5)(OH)] (I) and Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)] (II), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures were determined by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data, respectively. Compound I crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with the lattice constants of a = 6.0268(3) Å, b = 11.3635(6) Å, and c = 19.348(1) Å. Compound II crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cm with the lattice constants of a = 5.4676(6) Å, b = 14.6643(5) Å, c = 3.9058(1) Å, and β = 135.587(6)°. The borate fundamental building block (FBB) in I is a three-ring unit [B(3)O(6)(OH)](4-), which connects one by one via sharing corners, forming an infinite zigzag chain along the a direction. The borate chains are further linked by hydrogen bonds, showing as a borate layer within the ab plane. The FBB in II is an isolated [BO(2)(OH)](2-) triangle, which links to two neighboring FBBs by strong hydrogen bonds, resulting in a borate chain along the a direction. Both compounds contain [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers, and the [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers combine with the corresponding borate layers alternatively, forming the whole structures. These two new bismuth borates are the first ones containing [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers in borates. The appearance of Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)] (II) completes the series of compounds Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)], Bi(2)O(2)CO(3), and Bi(2)O(2)[NO(3)(OH)] and the formation of Bi(2)O(2)[B(3)O(5)(OH)] provides another example in demonstrating the polymerization tendency of borate groups.

Abstract:Three bismuth borates, Bi[B4O6(OH)(2)]OH (I), BiB2O4F (II), and Bi-3[B6O13(OH)] (III), were obtained in boric acid flux at low temperatures and their structures were determined by using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. All these three bismuth borates contain one-dimensional borate chains and crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space groups. I is a hydrated borate, crystallizing, in the space group PI with lattice constants a = 4.300(1) angstrom, b = 8.587(2) angstrom, c = 10.518(2) angstrom, alpha = 113.11(3)', 100.50(3)degrees, and beta = 90.36(3)degrees, and the borate chain consists of a 3-ring (2BO(3) + BO4) and a BO3 group. II is a fluoroborate, which crystallizes in the trigonal space group P3(2) with a = 6.7147(1) angstrom and c = 6.4688(1) angstrom, and the borate anion is a 3-fold helix chain formed by extensive linkage of three-membered borate rings (3BO(4)). III is also a hydrated borate with a structure that is closely related to 11, in which one-sixth of the borate groups are in triangular geometry (BOA which reduces the symmetry to P1, a = 6.6257(1) angstrom, b =6.6238(1) angstrom, c = 6.6541(1) angstrom, and alpha = 89.998(3)degrees, beta = 89.982(2)degrees, and gamma = 119.992(2)degrees. All these three bismuth borates exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.

Abstract:Two novel metal borates, namely, Ag7B9O16(OH)2 (1) and AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 (2) were obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Ag7B9O16(OH)2 displays a unique three‐dimensional (3D) framework built by 1D double borate chains further connected by Ag cations. AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 features borate chains are coordinated via AgO3 into layers which are further bridged via CaO8 polyhedron into the final 3D framework. Two novel metal borates, namely, Ag7B9O16(OH)2 (1) and AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 (2) were obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Ag7B9O16(OH)2 crystallizes into the centrosymmetric space group of C2/c in the monoclinic crystal system and displays a unique three‐dimensional (3D) framework built by 1D double borate chains further connected by Ag cations. AgCa2B7O11(OH)4 also belongs to monoclinic space group C2/c and it features borate chains with B8O8 8‐membered rings along the c axis which are further coordinated via AgO3 into 2D layers. These layers are bridged via CaO8 polyhedron into the final 3D framework. Two compounds were further characterized through thermogravimetric and optical analysis and density functional theory calculation have also been carried out, addressing their electronic structures.

Abstract:Novel rare-earth borate KBaTbB2O6 was synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure of KBaTbB2O6 has been determined by the Rietveld analysis, which demonstrates that the final chemical composition is K0.46Ba0.54Tb0.49BO3 and KBaTbB2O6 is isomorphous with KBaY(BO3)2 and crystallizes in the planar trigonal [BO3]3− group R-3m with lattice parameters of a=5.4562(4) Å, c=17.8629(2) Å, and Z=3. Tunable emission in red wavelength range was realized by doping and controlling Eu3+ ions content into KBaTbB2O6. The critical energy transfer distance calculated by the concentration quenching theory was 6.64Å and the energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ took place via a resonance-type mechanism.

Abstract:Two novel isotypic polyborate cluster compounds Na 5[MB 24O 34(OH) 12]. nH 2O (M = Cr (3+), Al (3+)) have been synthesized in a boric acid flux closed system at 220 degrees C by using gel as precursors. The structure of the Cr compound was determined by low-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the Al compound was confirmed to be isostructural by powder X-ray diffraction and similar FT-IR spectra and thermal behavior. Na 5[CrB 24O 34(OH) 12]. nH 2O crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1/ c with the cell parameters a = 17.4549(3) A, b = 11.1976(2) A, c = 21.2403(3) A, beta = 94.644(2) degrees , V = 4137.85(12) A (3), and Z = 4. The predominant feature of the structure are the spherelike polyborate clusters [MB 24O 34(OH) 12] (5-). The M (3+) cation is located at the center of the cluster, around which four hexaborate units ([B 6O 10(OH) 3] (5-)) are tetrahedrally assembled in almost a perfect T d symmetry. To the best of our knowledge, [MB 24O 34(OH) 12] (5-) is the first example of a polyborate cluster that contains 24 boron atoms. Upon heating, the compounds show two steps of weight loss, including the loss of the disengaged water and dehydration of the hydroxy groups. The first step is reversible, retaining the structure framework. The second weight loss is continuous and irreversible.

Abstract:A new non-centrosymmetric hydroxyl alkali metal borate LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) has been grown under mild hydrothermal conditions at 220 degrees C. LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) belongs to the orthorhombic space group Aba2, with a = 11.3017(5) angstrom, b = 10.9956(5) angstrom, c = 9.2860(4) angstrom, and Z = 2. The crystal structure of LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) consists of Li/Na-O, Rb-O polyhedra, and [B5O8(OH)(2)](3-) groups. The transmittance spectrum of the LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) exhibits an absorption edge less than 200 nm in the UV region. The powder second-harmonic generation coefficient in LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) is about one-third that of KH2PO4 (KDP) based the Kurtz-Perry method. First principle calculations based on band structure, density of states, and optical properties are used to better understand the relationship between electronic structure and optical properties.

Abstract:Three mixed-alkali-metal fluorooxoborates, KNaB3O4F3 (I), K2B3O4F3 (II), and KCsB3O4F3 (III), were acquired in a closed system. I-III are isomorphic and adopt orthorhombic structures [Pbcn (No. 60)] with wavy parallelly arranged pseudolayers composed of ∞1[B3O4F3] chains, which exhibit slight differences in the arrangement modes of the fundamental building blocks. First-principles calculations illustrate that they all have moderate birefringence and large band gaps on the order of 7.0 eV, suggesting deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edges. In order to investigate the main source of the optical properties, the electronic structure and anisotropy of the response electron distribution were analyzed. Experimental characterizations for I confirm the structure and DUV transparence ability.

Abstract:The first polar alkaline-earth metal molybdenum iodate, Ba2[MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]IO3, with a Λ-shaped [MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]3– functional motif, was rationally designed. A zero-dimensional (0D) [MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]3– unit is derived from 0D [MoO2(OH)(IO3)3]2– polyanion through anionic mono-site substitution. Ba2[MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]IO3 possesses a strong phase-matchable second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response of approximately 8 times that of benchmark KH2PO4 (KDP), a broad transparent spectral region from near-ultraviolet to mid-infrared (0.29–10.6 μm), a large band gap of 3.78 eV, and a high laser-induced damage threshold (LDT) of 92.3 MW cm–2. The results suggest that Ba2[MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]IO3 can be potentially applied in the mid-infrared nonlinear optical field. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the large SHG response of the title compound originates mainly from the Λ-shaped [MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]3– functional unit. Abstract:Fluorine-containing borate crystal materials are particularly attractive due to their rich structural chemistry and excellent properties for optical applications.
