Abstract:The density profile, mechanical properties, strength potential index, and microstructure changes of hybrid poplar were investigated before and after high-pressure (HP) treatments. The results of density profile indicated that a high uniform density distribution was developed inside the pressurized wood samples. The mechanical properties results showed that the HP treatments significantly increased (P < 0.05) the modulus of elasticity (MOE), the modulus of rupture (MOR), and the Brinell hardness (BH) of the densified wood at selected conditions. Of all the wood samples, the compressed wood at 150 MPa condition possessed the highest density and strength properties. Considering the variation in strength properties along with density, it can be concluded that the compression destruction degree of HP treatment was comparable with that caused by optimized thermal compression technique based on the strength potential index results. The integrity of wood cells presented in scanning electron microscopy results demonstrated the compression of wood cell wall achieved by HP treatment without causing any fractures, which further indicated that HP treatment is a less destructive compression technology. Based on this research, HP treatment has great potential to be applied in wood densification for commercial use.
Plastic and Elastic Strains in Poplar Wood under High-Pressure Densification

Abstract:Highlights High-pressure densification (HPD) resulted in more than 100% increase in the density of poplar wood. Density of wood during HPD treatment was up to 300% and 100% higher than observed before and after HPD. A method was developed to measure elastic recovery in the radial and tangential directions under HPD. Abstract . Plastic and elastic strains of poplar wood in the radial and tangential directions were investigated after high-pressure densification (HPD) using a special method that detected the elastic strain. There was a large difference in plastic and elastic strains obtained in compressed wood between the radial and tangential directions. The maximum total strain in the radial and tangential directions reached 26.9% and 66.9%, respectively, when compressed at 150 MPa for 300 s. Longer holding time (300 s) increased the plastic strain, by reducing the elastic strain, when the applied pressure was lower than 60 MPa. In addition, a large difference in compressed wood density prevailed when still under pressure as compared with the density measured after the pressure treatment, and both were nearly 1 to 3 times higher than the density of fresh wood. Further, the maximum density observed under pressure was related to the maximum reported density of dry crystalline cellulose plus the entrapped moisture. The mechanical properties of densified wood were also investigated and found to depend on the pressure treatment conditions. Abstract:Effects of high-pressure (HP) treatment on densification of poplar sapwood boards and subsequent coatings were evaluated. Tung oil (TO) and epoxy resin (ER)-coated treatments were used to improve the dimensional stability of HP-densified wood. The density of the wood after HP densification increased from 450 ± 50 kg/m 3 for the control to 960 ± 20 kg/m 3 at 125 MPa. This process also resulted in the average thickness of HP-densified boards to reduce significantly from 29.7 ± 0.11 mm for the control to 18.8 ± 0.53 mm after HP densification at 25 MPa and 14.3 ± 0.10 mm after 125 MPa treatment for 30 s. The mechanical strength measured as the hardness of densified wood significantly increased from 35% at 25 MPa to 96% at 125 MPa treatment, compared to untreated wood. As expected both TO and ER-coated treatments significantly reduced set-recovery of densified wood when stored at four relative humidity environments. ER showed better anti-swelling performance than TO, and would be a better choice.
Delayed Elastic Strain and Set-Recovery Evaluation in High-Pressure Densified Hybrid Poplar Wood – New Assessment Considerations

Abstract:The deformation behavior of high-pressure (HP)-treated hybrid poplar wood, the subsequent swelling, and the equilibrium moisture content properties of HP-densified wood were evaluated using a modified delayed strain/set-recovery method of cyclic humidification-dehumidification at different relative humidity (RH) conditions. The HP treatment resulted in significant compression (densification) of the wood under different treatment conditions. For treated wood samples, the value of delayed elastic strain was relatively small when stored at 20 °C and 65% RH, which indicated that HP-densified wood possessed dimensional stability. The HP-compressed poplar yielded lower equilibrium moisture content than the control at low RH, while major increases were observed at high RH above 76%. Marginal of thickness swelling was observed under the cyclic humidification-dehumidification method in the low RH range while significant swelling occurred at high RH. Conventional methods would only show results that were appropriate for storage at high RH environments. The RH threshold for set-recovery of HP-compressed wood was between 33% and 54% for optimal use, and the extent of set-recovery increased rapidly when RH was between 85% and 95%. Such differences could not be recognized with the conventional methods. In addition, the prolonged holding time significantly decreased the RH threshold value (P < 0.05).

Abstract:The utilization of unilateral surface compression technique offers significant advantages such as reduced volume loss of wood and energy consumption, making it highly promising for widespread applications. This work focused on fast-growing poplar (Ctrl) as research subject. The unilateral surface compression technique was employed to prepare compressed wood (USW), while superheated steam was utilized to suppress rebound effects (resulting in the formation of US＆HW). The results showed that the combination of densification and heat treatment technology significantly enhanced the application performance of wood. Compared to Ctrl, the densified area exhibited a significant reduction in the volume of cell cavities, with a stepped distribution evident on the VDP. Furthermore, heat treatment resulted in a decrease in the relative amount of hydroxyl in the wood, as well as a slight increase in crystallinity. This effectively reduced deformation in dense wood, resulting in a 20.02% reduction in its recovery rate, without causing excessive damage to the VDP. Additionally, Heat treatment resulted in a darker wood color, reduced glossiness, increased roughness, and further increase the water contact angle of the compressed wood. The mechanical performance of US＆HW achieved an excellent grade, with a score of 48, while all six processing performance grades of US＆HW exceeded Grade 3, surpassing those of both USW and Ctrl. The finishing performance of the US＆HW was good, although slightly lower than that of USW in terms of ball impact performance. And the adhesion, hardness and abrasion resistance indexes of the paint film meet the requirements of excellent products in the standard.

Abstract:This study investigated compressive strain and water absorption performances of chemically modified poplar wood (Populus tomentosa Carr). Two chemicals used were acidified sodium chlorite (NaClO2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions. The Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that lignin and hemicellulose in modified wood cell walls were removed, resulting in a compressible rebound 3D structure in modified poplar wood verified through high-resolution scanning electron microscopic image analyses. This 3D structure was approved having excellent properties of compressible rebound and highly Water s absorption. In addition, experimental results indicated the chemically treated poplar wood had better plastic deformation with its strain up to 70% if compared to untreated wood of 14%. The modified wood maintained good resilience performance and no deformation in size after fifty compression-releasing cycles along longitudinal direction. The modified wood had its initial water absorption reaching 404%, and was able to maintain a water absorption at 388% after 20 cycles while still keeping 3D structure intact.

Abstract:Cross-grain compression method was applied for intensifying the poplar board.Test results showed that all the physical and mechanical properties of the poplar wood were improved by densification treatment.At 50% compression ratio,30% initial moisture content and 100℃ compression temperature,the performance of the poplar wood was proven to be better than that of the oak board.The results from observation by scanning electronic microscope(SEM) and Matlab analysis displayed that poplar vessels were severely deformed by cross-grain compression,leading to the reduction of porosity and increment of cell substance per unit volume.Therefore,the effective area to bear the external force was enlarged,and the ability of anti-external force destruction was greatly enhanced,which could be manifested by remarkable reinforcement of physical and mechanical properties.

Abstract:The deformation fixation of the compressive Populus ussuriensis and Larix gmelinii solid wood was studied in this paper. Dynamic thermo-mechanical analyzer was used to evaluate the change of the treated wood on different position (compare with the non-compressive control wood). The internal mechanism of compressive solid wood and compressive deformation fixation were discussed by analyzing the effect of steam treatment on dynamic thermo-mechanical parameters of the treated wood, such as loss modulus and loss tangent. The tendency of the wood components such as hemi-cellulose and lignin were also studied in this course. The results showed that with the increasing of surface distance, loss modulus and loss angle tangent decreased in glass state area, the initial glass transition temperature decreased obviously at 0.5 cm away from the surface. So the deformation fixation of the compressive wood is due to the lower molecule weight of lignin and the failure of creep recovery.

Abstract:Unilateral surface compression in wood presents notable benefits, including reduced wood volume loss and energy consumption, rendering a highly promising and extensive utilization. However, shortcomings in compressed wood arise due to unclear gas pressure, temperature, and moisture content distribution within the wood during hot pressing. In this paper, the temperature and pressure distribution were analyzed utilizing an optical fiber temperature and pressure measurement system within the wood during hot pressing. Moreover, the moisture content, stress and strain in each layer at the end of hot pressing were discussed extensively. The results showed that the wood surface layer (SL) and subsurface layer (SSL) maximum temperature values were similar even with different layer thicknesses. Under sealing conditions, SL and SSL temperatures were generally 6 degrees C to 7 degrees C higher compared to unsealing conditions. The gas pressure maximum value exhibited an opposite order, gradually transferring to the core layer (CL) and declining as the processing time extended. During compression treatment, moisture migrated from the hot end to the cold within the wood. The moisture content displayed significant differences between the middle and end parts of the wood under unsealed conditions, with the disparity becoming more pronounced further away from the hot end. The transition region of the compressed wood served as a stress concentration area, experiencing the highest levels of stress. The dense region followed with the second highest stress levels, while the un-densified region exhibited the least amount of stress. Under the same process parameters, the thickness had little influence on the distribution of dense layers.
Mechanical Properties and Dimensional Stability of Poplar Wood Modified by Pre-Compression and Post-Vacuum-Thermo Treatments

Abstract:Fast-growing poplar wood has the bottleneck problems of inferior mechanical strength and poor dimensional stability. In this study, the wood was modified by combined treatments of pre-compression and post-vacuum-thermo modification to improve its mechanical strength and dimensional stability, simultaneously; in addition, the variation law of mechanical properties of the wood with compression ratio as well as the improvement effect of dimensional stability of the treated wood were mainly studied. The results show that the optimal temperature and time of the vacuum-thermo modification were 190 °C and 10 h, respectively. Under these conditions, the structure of pre-compressed and post-vacuum-thermally modified wood (CT wood) is gradually densified with the increase in the compression ratio, which results in the continuous enhancement of mechanical properties. Meanwhile, the anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) of the CT wood after water absorption is correspondingly better than that of the compressed wood before thermal modification, indicating that the dimensional stability of compressed wood was improved by the thermal modification. When the compression ratio was 70%, the modulus of rupture (MOR) and impact toughness of CT wood was 176 MPa and 63 KJ/m2, which was 125% and 59% higher than that of untreated wood, respectively. The ASE was also 26% higher than that of the wood with sole compression. Therefore, this method improves the mechanical strength and dimensional stability of wood simultaneously, and it provides a scientific basis for optimization of the reinforcing modification process of fast-growing wood.

Abstract:Heat treatment effectively inhibits the water absorption recovery of compressed wood. To elucidate this phenomenon, we prepared compressed pine and thermally compressed pine (heartwood and sapwood) using the hot pressing method at 160 °C, 180 °C, 200 °C, and 220 °C. The effects of chemical components, swelling stresses, and monosaccharides on modified wood recovery were investigated using regression analyses. Notably, the recovery of both compressed heartwood and sapwood during water absorption declined from 18.89% to 2.66% and from 58.40% to 1.60%, respectively, after heat treatment. Similarly, the swelling stresses of the compressed heartwood and sapwood at 220 °C, respectively, ranged from 0.693 MPa to 0.275 MPa and from 0.783 MPa to 0.330 MPa. These were close to the values of untreated heartwood (0.175 MPa) and sapwood (0.225 MPa). Regression functions indicated that the recovery of compressed wood is chemically dependent on hemicellulose and mechanically related to swelling stress. For monosaccharides, regression functions indicated that modified heartwood recovery primarily relied on mannose, whereas modified sapwood recovery was remarkably affected by mannose and xylose. This confirmed that the pyrolytic monosaccharides in hemicellulose promoted stress relaxation, which induced the deformation fixation of thermally compressed wood.

Abstract:We used the solutions containing both sucrose acting as cell wall bulking agent and 1,3d-imethylol -4,5-dihydroxyeth-yleneurea (DMDHEU) as cross-linking agent to impregnate veneers of poplar wood (Populus adenopoda Maxim) veneer that was hot-pressed thereafter to fix the deformation .The properties of the veneers were enhanced at low chemical loadings by chemical modification of cell walls and physical compression of cell lumens .We determined the effects of impregnation/compression on the properties of the resulting veneers , such as spring ratio, density, hardness, color, and mechanical strength .The compressed veneers treated with 5%sucrose and 10%DMDHEU exhibited 23%recovery ratio after five water saturation/oven drying cycles and one water boiling step .The density at the surface of compressed veneer reached 0.71 g/cm3 with high dense hardwoods .The treated and compressed veneers had a surface hardness as much as two times of the untreated/uncompressed control .The color changed from initial dark grey to golden brown .The adhesion of two waterborne coatings on the treated/compressed veneers was considerably improved compared to that on the untreated /uncompressed control.Therefore, there is a potential application of the treated/compressed poplar veneers at low chemical loading for the qualified surface layer of laminated floor .
Effects of Thermo-Hydro-mechanical Treatments on Various Physical and Mechanical Properties of Poplar (populus) Wood

Abstract:Poplar (Populus) wood was subjected in this work to thermo-hydro-mechanical treatment. The influence of the treatment parameters on the physical and mechanical properties were investigated. The wood samples were densified under three compression ratios (0%, 30%, and 50%), and thermally treated at three temperatures (180 °C, 200 °C, and 220 °C), at three thermal treatment durations (3 h, 4 h, and 5 h). The density, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, radial hardness, and thickness swelling were measured. The results showed that the densities of the samples increased by 36.6% to 49.7%. As the compression rate increased, the temperature, duration, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and hardness increased. However, the dimensions of the densified samples were less stable. Compared to the densiﬁed samples, the maximum thickness swelling could be reduced by 74% (from 29.7% to 7.8%) when subjected to a thermal treatment at 220 °C for 3 h.
Mechanical properties of compression wood from two fast-growth wood species pretreated with alkaline sulfites

Abstract:Abstract Compressed fast-growing wood has excellent mechanical properties, making it a cheap alternative to solid wood. However, compression without pretreatment can lead to rupture of the cell walls of the wood and even to macroscopically visible cracks. Thus, to minimize damage to fast-growing wood during compression and to increase the compression ratio and density of the wood simultaneously, pretreatment is usually carried out prior to compression. This study investigated the effects of hydrothermal pretreatment and alkaline sulfite pretreatment on the mechanical properties of compression-modified Chinese fir and poplar wood. Comparison of the mass changes and mechanical strength of compressed wood obtained from two wood species after different pretreatments, in addition, their micro-morphology, chemical composition, and cellulose crystallinity were analyzed and evaluated. The results indicate that the density, compressive strength and hardness of compression specimens of fir and poplar reached the highest values after 5h and 3h of alkaline sulfite pretreatment, respectively.
Characterization of Microstructure, Chemical, and Physical Properties of Delignified and Densified Poplar Wood

Abstract:Wood is an attractive and inherently sustainable alternative to many conventional materials. Recent research on improving wood mechanical strength emphasizes wood densification through the partial removal of lignin and hemicelluloses, therefore the chemical and physical properties of delignified and densified wood require further investigation. In this study, poplar wood samples were subjected to alkali and maleic acid hydrotropic delignification with varying degrees of lignin and hemicellulose removal followed by hot pressing, and the microstructure, chemical properties, and dimensional stability of densified wood through delignification were evaluated. The results showed that the complete wood cell collapse was observed near the surface of all the delignified wood blocks, as well as some micro-cracks in the cell walls. The chemical analysis indicated that delignification occurred mainly near the surface of the wood blocks and enhanced hydrogen bonding among the aligned cellulose fibers. For dimensional stability, the set recovery decreased with the increase in alkali dosage, and the considerable fixation of compressive deformation was obtained by a post-densification hydrothermal treatment at 180 °C. These results have demonstrated that the densified wood with delignification can be easily fabricated using the proposed method, and the densified wood exhibited great potential to be used as a sustainable material.

Study of Chemical Modification by Impregnation of Fresh Poplar Log and by Hot-Press Drying Process

Abstract:In this work, fresh poplar logs were chemically impregnated with a pulse-dipping machine. The impregnated timbers were compressed and dried by use of a multilayer hot-press drying kiln. With a compression rate of 28.67%, such an approach not only enhanced the density and mechanical properties of the treated wood, but also influenced the set recovery from the compressive deformation. Extra urea was added into the modifier to optimize the effect of the set recovery; however the result was a slight decrease in the mechanical properties. The positions of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks did not change, which indicated that the structure of the cellulose was not noticeably affected by this treatment. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis showed that the intensity amide (N-C=O) absorption peak increased significantly due to the chemical impregnation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the high strain in the hot-press process drastically reduced the volume of void spaces in the specimens and deformed the cell lumens.

Abstract:Poplar is a fast-growing tree with a short cultivation time; however, there are some disadvantages to poplar such as its low density and low dimensional stability. The aim of this work was to study the physical and chemical performance of poplar wood treated by its impregnation with functional composite modifiers followed by compression drying. The results showed that this approach not only significantly increased the dimensional stability of the wood but also enhanced its bending strength and compressive strength parallel to the wood grain. Fourier transform infrared analysis showed that the intensity of the hydroxyl (-OH) and carbonyl (C=O) absorption peaks decreased, which provided evidence that the -NHCH2OH of the modifier reacted with the wood's carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. The position of the XRD peaks did not change, which indicated that the crystallinity structure of cellulose was not noticeably affected by chemical modification. The TGA showed that the thermal stability of the modified wood was improved, while FESEM analysis showed that the wood cell lumens and vessels were filled with chemicals.

Abstract:Specimens of fast-grown, low density poplar wood were impregnated with organic and inorganic solutions which included urea-formaldehyde resin, polyacrylate emulsion, and silica sol. The authors analyzed the chemical composition changes, thermal performance, and compression strength of the treated wood specimens and compared them to untreated wood specimens. The results showed that the specimens impregnated with urea-formaldehyde resin had improvement in their thermal performance and compression strength.

Abstract:The in situ thermoplasticization of poplar wood with ionic liquids (ILs) has been investigated. The thermoplastic deformation of wood samples treated with four types of ILs at various concentrations was determined through nonisothermal compression tests by means of a rotational rheometer. Results show that increasing the concentration of ILs reduced softening temperature and increased deformation compared to the untreated control. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that plastic deformation of wood cells from the applied compression stress varied, depending on cell type, and occurred without cell wall fracture. X-ray diffraction analysis of compressed wood showed that wood treated with ILs exhibits a greater crystallinity index than the untreated control. The recovered strain in compressed samples decreased with increasing temperature and concentration of ILs to 18% weight percent gain (WPG) and then decreased slightly to 36% WPG. In treated samples, the combined wood/IL blends demonstrated less thermal stability than wood and ILs alone. Results also show that plastic deformation of IL-treated wood resulted in viscous buckling of unfractured cell walls. This deformation mode likely resulted from the disintegration of intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonding between cell wall polymers through the combined effect of ILs, pressure, and high temperature.

Abstract:To increase the utilization and the value of poplar, various concentrations of dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea (DMDHEU) were used to impregnate poplar, an important tree specie from the north of China. The resin was fixed on the timber under certain conditions, after which the weight percent gain (WPG), flexural modulus (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), impact strength, hardness and compressive strength of the poplar impregnated were tested and evaluated. The results showed that WPG of poplar is positively associated with the concentrations of DMDHEU after the resin treatment; when the WPG of poplar was 62.1% and the concentration of resin was 30%, the concentration of resin shows positive correlation with MOE, the hardness of each section, the compression strength perpendicular to grain, and the compressive strength parallel to the grain, but demonstrates negative correlation with MOR and impact strength.
