Abstract:Sensitive H-2 gas sensors are highly desirable for the prediction and early-warning of H-2 leakage. Low-dimensional nanostructures of metal oxide semiconductor emerge as promising materials candidates, but it remains a challenge to preserve the nanostructures in the real sensors. In this work, we demonstrated highly sensitive H-2 gas sensors based on porous network of SnO2 nanowires that exhibited ultrasmall diameter similar to 2 nm. Colloidal SnO2 nanowires synthesized via a solvothermal process were drop-coated onto the commercial alumina substrates, followed by in-situ annealing treatment at 350 degrees C to remove the surface ligands. The sensors exhibited sensitive response with linear dependence on the H-2 gas concentration ranging from 2 ppm to 100 ppm when operated at 250 degrees C. Typically, the sensor had a response of 13 toward 40 ppm of H-2, with the response and recovery time being 15 s and 31 s, respectively. To further improve the sensor performance, Palladium doped SnO2 nanowires were thoroughly investigated. It's shown that, the operating temperature of the sensor decreased from 250 degrees C to 150 degrees C after Pd doping, and the response and recovery time decreased to 6 s/3 s. The superb sensitivity was attributed to the enhanced gas reception, electron transport as well as utility factor owing to the network nanostructure of ultrathin SnO2 nanowires and catalytic activity of Pd, according to theoretical calculation and adsorption kinetics studies. Combined with the excellent solution processability, the colloidal SnO2 nanowires are potentially attractive for next-generation gas sensors with lower power consumption and integration with silicon-based substrates.
Preparation of In_2O_3 Nanwires by Sol-gel Template Technology and Their Gas Sensing Property

Abstract:AAM template was employed to fabricate cubic In2O3 nanowires by sol-gel template using NH2CH2CH2NH2 and InCl3·4H2O as precursor. The structure, morphology and grain diameter of In2O3 nanowires were characterized by means of XRD, SEM and TEM. The experiment results show that In2O3 nanowires with diameters ranging from 80 to 100 nm and their grain diameters ranging from 4 to 10 nm were synthesized. The gas sensing property of the sensor fabricated by pre -prepared In2O3 nanowires was investigated. It shows the In2O3 nanowires sensor has high selectivity to NO2 with optimal working temperature 360 ℃
Facile Synthesis of Α-Fe2o3/zno Core-Shell Nanowires for Enhanced H2S Sensing

Abstract:The alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO core-shell nanowires (NWs) on micro-electro-mechanical system structure were prepared for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas sensing. Core alpha-Fe2O3 NWs were prepared by thermal oxidation and the ZnO shell layer was coated by atomic layer deposition, respectively. The diameter of the obtained alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO core-shell NWs increases uniformly with the increase of ZnO shell thickness. When the operating temperature is 250 degrees C, the maximum response of the alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO core-shell NWs gas sensor to 5 ppm H2S is 5.98, which is about five times of pure alpha-Fe2O3 NWs gas sensor (similar to 1.1). Moreover, alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO core-shell NWs-based gas sensors showed good selectivity, response, and recovery properties to H2S. The improvement of gas response of core-shell NWs is due to the slender alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO core-shell NWs and the appropriate energy band structure between ZnO and alpha-Fe2O3. Thus, the proposed alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO core-shell NWs will be one of ideal sensitive materials for H2S high-performance sensor.

Abstract:In this paper, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based humidity sensor has been fabricated by colloidal fin oxide (SnO2) nanowires. The SnO2 nanowires were synthesized via a colloidal process that employing SnCl4 ethanol solutions mixed with oleic acid (OA) and oleylamine (OLA). The spin-coating method was chosen to deposit the sensitive film at room temperature without high-temperature sintering. Furthermore, the Cu(NO3)(2) methanol solution was used to remove the organic long chains coated on the surface of the colloidal SnO2 nanowires and expose more adsorption sites. The characterizations of the material were studied by means of FTIR, XRD, and FE-SEM. The saturated salt solution method was used to investigate the humidity sensing performance (response, recovery, repeatability, etc.) of the QCM sensor in the range of 11%-97%. The results showed that the sample with 12 h synthesis has the best humidity response. This may be attributed to the larger specific surface area which makes the material provide more adsorption sites for water molecules, and more (110) planes formed which could absorb more water molecules proved by the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation.
Hydrothermally synthesized MXene Ti3C2/Zn2SnO4 based nanocomposite for H2S sensing at room temperature

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas sensors with high response and minimum limit of detection at room temperature are of great importance to ensure the safety of humans and the environment. A series of samples such as MXene Ti3C2, Ti3AlC2, WS2, MoSe2/Zn2SnO4 and spherical Zn2SnO4 nanoparticles were synthesized via hydrothermal method in this paper. Different characterizations were performed on these samples to check crystal structures, morphologies, chemical states, etc. And gas sensing properties were also performed and analyzed deeply. A series of sensor sheets were fabricated via the spin coating method based on synthesized samples for gas sensing properties. MXene Ti3C2/Zn2SnO4-5 based gas sensor detected the highest response (110) towards 8 ppm H2S with excellent selectivity, the minimum limit of detection (0.01 ppm), mediate long-term stability and good reproducibility compared with other fabricated sensors at room temperature. Also, the sensor response was increased with the increase of H2S concentration. Experimental results showed that the highest response of Ti3C2/Zn2SnO4-5 based gas sensor was accredited to heterojunction, higher BET surface area, and increased oxygen species. The simple way synthesized nanocomposite and fabricated sensors throw a novel idea for tracing H2S at the lowest concentration to prevent different diseases.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) nanowires have been successfully synthesized by a sonochemical method in ambient air and alkali aqueous solution from CeO2 nanoparticles without using any templates. The results showed that both alkali concentration and ultrasonic irradiation played critical roles in the formation of the nanowires. The crystalline structure and dimensions of the nanowires were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The UV-visible absorption spectrum result showed that the products had conspicuous shape-specific effect. Microstructural analysis in HRTEM revealed that the preferential growth direction of CeO2 nanowires was [110]. Moreover, the catalytic activity of Au/CeO2 using CeO2 nanowires as support for CO conversion was higher than that obtained using bulk CeO2 as support.
Exploiting Free-Standing p-CuO/n-TiO 2 Nanochannels as a Flexible Gas Sensor with High Sensitivity for H 2 S at Room Temperature

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an extremely hazardous gas and is harmful to human health and the environment. Here, we developed a flexible H2S gas-sensing device operated at room temperature (25 °C) based on CuO nanoparticles coated with free-standing TiO2-nanochannel membranes that were prepared by simple electrochemical anodization. Benefiting from the modulated conductivity of the CuO/TiO2 p–n heterojunction and a unique nanochannel architecture, the traditional thermal energy was innovatively replaced with UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm) to provide the required energy for triggering the sensing reactions of H2S. Importantly, upon exposure to H2S, the p–n heterojunction is destroyed and the newly formed ohmic contact forms an antiblocking layer at the interface of CuS and TiO2, thus making the sensing device active at room temperature. The resulting CuO/TiO2 membrane exhibited a notable detection sensitivity for H2S featuring a minimum detection limit of 3.0 ppm, a response value of 46.81% against 100 ppm H2S gas, and a rapid response and recovery time. This sensing membrane also demonstrated excellent durability, long-term stability, and wide-range response to a concentration of up to 400 ppm in the presence of 40% humidity as well as outstanding flexibility and negligible change in electrical measurements under various mechanical stability tests. Abstract:Herein, cerium/cerium oxide nanoparticles have been decorated on reduced graphene oxide (Ce/CeO 2 -rGO) for room temperature electrochemical determination of H 2 S in 0.5 M KOH. There is a superior linear correlation between the peak current density and H 2 S content in the tested range of 1–5 ppm. Moreover, comparison to other abundant gases such as CO 2 shows no response at the potential of H 2 S oxidation, confirming no interference with H 2 S detection. It also reveals that the Ce/CeO 2 -rGO nanocomposite is a highly selective and sensitive system for the determination of H 2 S gas. Ce/CeO 2 -rGO synthesized by a simple chemical approach and further characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), coupled energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX), and BET-surface area measurement confirms the porosity of synthesized nanomaterials and homogeneous decoration of Ce/CeO 2 nanoparticles on rGO sheets. The electrochemical studies, i.e., linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), of Ce/CeO 2 -rGO demonstrate the electrochemical H 2 S sensing at room temperature and for lower gas concentration (1 ppm) detection. The sensing mechanism is believed to be based on the modulation of the current and applied potential path across the electron exchange between the cerium oxide and rGO sites when exposed to H 2 S.

Individual Bi2s3 Nanowire-Based Room-Temperature H-2 Sensor

Abstract:Single Bi2S3 nanowire devices were fabricated using the focused ion beam technique to deposit Pt electrodes. Repeatable and reliable ohmic contacts were obtained. The devices exhibit outstanding H-2 sensing performance that can detect H2 (in N-2) at room temperature with a sensitivity of 22% at 10 ppm (corresponds to 4.0 x 10(-7) mol/L). Decorating Pd nanoparticles on the surface of the nanowire does not improve the sensing performance, contrary to most of the existing nanowire (or nanotube) H-2 sensors. The sensing mechanism of Bi2S3 nanowire devices is found to be different from that of other sensors based on nanowires or nanotubes. Experiments on different H-2 concentrations and gas pressures suggest that the sensing response is determined mainly by the amount of H-2 molecules instead of the proportion of H-2 in the mixed gas.
In Operando Impedance Spectroscopic Analysis on NiO–WO3 Nanorod Heterojunction Random Networks for Room-Temperature H2S Detection

Abstract:The use of metal-oxide sensors for effectively detecting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas at room temperature is currently hindered by their inadequate sensitivity and selectivity. Using a lucid fabrication strategy, we report a room-temperature, highly sensitive, and selective H2S gas sensor using NiO-modified WO3 nanorod (one-dimensional-one-dimensional) random networks. The observed improvements in gas-sensing sensitivity stem from the synergistic effects of various contributions inside the sensing heterostructure, such as bulk nanorod, p-n heterojunction at the interface of these two dissimilar oxides, and gas-induced conducting species due to sulfurization (WS2-x and NiS1-x ). An in situ impedance measurement during gas exposure was used to investigate the influence of these effects. The analysis revealed that these contributing factors can be either cooperating or competing and lead to either increased or decreased sensitivity, respectively. The presence of semimetallic species (NiS, WS2) was further confirmed by in situ X-ray diffraction analysis of the heterostructure nanorod sample with H2S gas exposure. The related sensing mechanism in the heterostructures is presented with a conduction pathway model. The room-temperature-operated nanorod heterostructure sensors showed a lower detection limit of H2S at ∼0.5 ppm, which is significantly lower than its toxicity limiting value ∼10 ppm, per the Environmental Protection Agency. The nanorod heterostructure sensors can be used for real-time, low-cost, room-temperature alarms in an H2S monitoring system.

The exceptional gas sensitivity of Fe2O3/Ti3C2 composite to H2S can be attributed to several key factors. First, the unique layered frame structure of Fe2O3/Ti3C2 significantly amplifies the surface area of the hybrid material, enhancing the absorption and diffusion capabilities of H2S molecules. Second, the abundance of functional groups (-O, -OH, and -F) on the surface of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets provides additional active sites for H2S adsorption, The density functional theory calculation confirms that the adsorption energy of the Fe2O3/Ti3C2 composite for H2S (-2.93 eV) is significantly lower than that of pure Fe2O3 (-2.37 eV) and Ti3C2 (-0.2 eV). Lastly, the remarkable metal conductivity of Ti3C2 MXene ensures efficient electron transfer, thereby enhancing overall sensing performance.

Abstract:We report one kind of Micro-Electro-Mechanical system (MEMS) H2S gas sensors with excellent sensing performance on ppb level (the lowest detection limit is 5 ppb). The sensors were fabricated with ZnO/Co3O4 sensing materials derived from Zn/Co-ZIF by annealing at a suitable temperature 500°C. ZnO/Co3O4-500 exhibits the highest response when exposed to 10 ppb H2S gas at 120°C, and the response/recovery times are 10 s/21 s. What's more, it exhibits outstanding selectivity, long-terms stability (kept 95% response after 45 days), and moisture resistance (had only a minor fluctuation of 2% even at the 90 RH%). This can be ascribed the reason that ZnO/Co3O4-500 has regular morphology, abundant oxygen vacancies (52.8%) and high specific surface area (96.5 m2/g). This work provided not only a high performance H2S MEMS gas sensor but also a systematical study of the effect of the annealing temperature on sensing performance of ZnO/Co3O4 sensing materials derived from bimetal organic frameworks.

Conductometric H2S Sensors Based on TiO2 Nanoparticles

Abstract:High-performance hydrogen sulfide (H2S) sensors are mandatory for many industrial applications. However, the development of H2S sensors still remains a challenge for researchers. In this work, we report the study of a TiO2-based conductometric sensor for H2S monitoring at low concentrations. TiO2 samples were first synthesized using the sol-gel route, annealed at different temperatures (400 and 600 °C), and thoroughly characterized to evaluate their morphological and microstructural properties. Scanning electronic microscopy, Raman scattering, X-ray diffraction, and FTIR spectroscopy have demonstrated the formation of clusters of pure anatase in the TiO2 phase. Increasing the calcination temperature to 600 °C enhanced TiO2 crystallinity and particle size (from 11 nm to 51 nm), accompanied by the transition to the rutile phase and a slight decrease in band gap (3.31 eV for 400 °C to 3.26 eV for 600 °C). Sensing tests demonstrate that TiO2 annealed at 400 °C displays good performances (sensor response Ra/Rg of ~3.3 at 2.5 ppm and fast response/recovery of 8 and 23 s, respectively) for the detection of H2S at low concentrations in air.

Abstract:In(2)O(3) nanotransistors for gas sensor applications were fabricated using individual In(2)O(3) nanowires prepared by chemical vapor deposition. The nanosensors demonstrate characteristics of high sensitivity to H(2)S, and fast response and recovery, with the detection limit at 1 ppm at room temperature. The high sensitivity might be attributed to the strong electron accepting capability of H(2)S to the nanowires and the high surface-to-volume ratio of the nanowires. In addition, the nanosensors show a good selective detection of H(2)S under exposure to NH(3) and CO even at 1000 ppm; they are highly promising for practical applications in detection of low concentration H(2)S at room temperature.

Abstract:Novel NiO meshed nanowalls, with characteristics of open geometry, porosity, single crystal and highly crystalline framework, are grown in situ on different substrates (including Al2O3 tube, glass slide, ITO, stainless steel mesh, nickel foam and carbon cloth) via a simple ammonia volatilization liquid deposition process at room temperature and a postcalcination treatment. The calcination temperature can strongly influence the pore size and crystallinity of the product, leading to different gas-sensing performances. The product that obtained at 700 °C (NiO-700) has the advantage in the combination of the largest pore size and high crystallinity, and shows the highest response to H2S gas. In 0.01-100 ppm H2S gas, the NiO-700 meshed nanowalls based sensor can give evident and reversible response signals at a low optimal operating temperature of 50 °C, the response towards 100 ppm H2S can reach to 137.3, the detection limit is as low as 10 ppb. Furthermore, the sensor also exhibits excellent selectivity, repeatability, anti-humidity and long-term stability for H2S detection. The results of gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and infrared gas analysis (IRGA) reveal that the H2S gas can be oxidized to SO2 after interacting with NiO-700 meshed nanowalls material. Therefore, the possible H2S sensing mechanism should be proposed as: H2S gas molecules undergo a redox reaction with adsorbed oxygen anion on the surface of NiO-700 meshed nanowalls to form SO2; meanwhile, the electrons restricted by adsorbed oxygen return to the bulk and recombine with the holes, resulting in a decrease in effective carrier concentration of holes and thus generating a change in resistance.

Abstract:In this work, an in-situ grown and Pt-decorated ZnO nanoclusters (NCs) gas sensor was fabricated by employing etched FTO glass as the growth substrate and gas-sensing electrode via facile dip-coating assisted hydrothermal route and physical mixing method, which exhibited superior gas-sensing performance for low-concentration H2S at room temperature. Benefiting by the in-situ growth, good ohmic contacts between ZnO NCs and FTO electrode are formed, which maximize the gas-sensing performance and enhancing the stability of the sensor. On this basis, ZnO NCs with top cross-linked structure can provide adequate grain-boundary potential barriers and self-assembled electron pathways, as well as larger effective surface area and gas diffusion space. What's more, Pt nanoparticles (NPs) decoration on the surface of ZnO NCs can introduce more catalytic sites and proper Schottky barriers for gas-sensing tests. Due to their synergistic effects, the in-situ grown and Pt-decorated ZnO NCs sensor exhibit excellent room-temperature gas-sensing behaviors for H2S. Among samples, 1.5 at% Pt-decorated ZnO NCs sensor possesses the highest response value, excellent selectivity, repeatability and stability, which achieves the room-temperature detection of H2S at ppb level. In addition, the effect of Pt decoration on the gas-sensing behaviors under high temperature condition and the mechanism of enhancing gas-sensing performance were also systematically investigated.

Abstract:The development of microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based sensors with ZnO nanoparticles as sensitive materials for detecting a low concentration of H2S has recently attracted extensive attention because of their small size and easy integration. In this study, undecorated ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile coprecipitation method with the regulation of ammonia water. The phase structure, nanostructure, specific area, surface basicity, and oxygen species of the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were systematically investigated. Then, preferred ZnO-1 nanoparticles were deposited on the MEMS microhotplate chips as a sensitive material, and the corresponding gas-sensing performances were characterized for various gases at an optimal operating temperature of 220 °C. The MEMS-based sensors with ZnO-1 showed good sensitivity to 1 ppm H2S at 220 °C with response/recovery times of 72 and 29 s, respectively. Furthermore, the sensor presented a wide linear range from 50 ppb to 15 ppm, good repeatability, and high selectivity. Such enhanced sensing performance to H2S was mainly attributed to the large surface area and the high surface basicity of prepared ZnO-1 nanoparticles. Moreover, a plausible reason for the enhanced sensing performance was also proposed.

Abstract:Four nano-structured metal oxides: H2Ti3O7 nanotubes, TiO2 nanotubes, Li4Ti5O12 nanotubes and LiAlO2 nanobelts have been synthesized successfully by using sonochemical-hydrothermal processes. Sensors based on the materials have been prepared on alumina substrates for detecting NO2, H-2 and CO. The SEM micrographs showed that the sensing films kept nanostructures with many holes owing to the ruleless conformation of nanotubes. Li4Ti5O12 nanotubes sensor showed an obvious sensing characteristic to NO2 at 150 degrees C, and the sensitivity increased with increasing NO2 concentration operated from 150 degrees C to 300 degrees C. The best sensitivity (1000) for 1880 ppm NO2 was obtained at 300 degrees C. Sensors based on pure and doped TiO2 nanotubes with Nb5+, Sn4+, Mn4+ and Cr3+, respectively, were prepared and the gas response characteristics were investigated in detail. Sensors based on TiO2 nanotubes doped with Nb5+ showed the best H-2 sensing properties at 300 degrees C. Sensor based on pure TiO2 nanotubes showed better selectivity for H-2 than CO measured at 350 degrees C and 400 degrees C.

Abstract:Olive-shaped SnO2 nanocrystals were synthesized successfully via a facile hydrothermal route, using tin dichloride hydrate, oxalic acid dihydrate and polyvinylpyrrolidone as reaction precursors, and showed great potential in the large-scale preparation of SnO2 nanocrystals. The prepared SnO2 nanocrystals were characterized using XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM and HRTEM, and showed well-defined olive-shaped tetragonal single-crystals with irregular exposed facets. The growth mechanism of the olive-shaped SnO2 nanocrystals was considered after investigating the experimental conditions and reaction time. Due to the abundant active sites on the irregular surfaces, the gas sensing performance of the prepared SnO2 nanocrystals exhibited great gas sensing properties, including high sensitivity, selectivity and stability towards H2S with a very low detection limit (less than 0.5 ppm), revealing their great potential in commercial applications for H2S gas detection.
