Abstract:This paper has investigated the harmful effects of Gamma irradiation on fiber communication system links under thermal environment effects over wide range of the operating parameters. Both the ambient temperature and the irradiation dose possess sever effects on the system transmission link characteristics and consequently the performance characteristics of optical communication systems. As well as we have deeply developed the modelling basics of transmission communication systems, which may be used to analyzed the total dispersion for first and second orders, system rise time, 3-dB bandwidth, transmitted signal bandwidth, transmission bit rates and products using different transmission techniques of these irradiated optical transmission communication systems after different irradiation fluences. I. Introduction The transmission characteristics of optical fiber are very much influenced in radiation environment due to generation of radiation induced defect centers by ionization and atomic displacement within the molecular bonding network of silica (SiO 2) glass [1, 2]. The generated defect centers cause absorption in Ultraviolet (UV), Visible (VIS) or near Infrared (IR) region and are responsible for radiation sensitivity of the fiber. The radiation induced loss in optical fiber depends largely on core clad composition, dopant concentration, fiber design along with different radiation parameters like radiation source, dose rate and operating parameters like temperature [3-5], transmission wavelength etc. Lot of work has been carried out to study the radiation effect on optical fibers and the associated defect centre generation with the objective of using the fiber as transmission medium in radiation environment which requires it to be radiation resistant. On the other hand the possibility of using the fiber as sensor under various radiation environments such as nuclear waste tanks, nuclear reactors etc has also been explored. For this the fiber should have radiation soft behaviour [6]. When optical fibers are exposed to nuclear or X ray radiation, the attenuation in the fibers increases due to the radiation induced ionization and formation of color centers. This effect can strongly reduce the performance of the fiber optic systems, such as fiber optic data transmission and fiber spectroscopy in nuclear environments, without compensation or careful design of systems. However, based on the dependence of the fiber loss on radiation dose, this mechanism can be explored to evaluate the use of optical fiber as radiation sensors [7, 8].
