Abstract:With the deepening exploration of space by humans,traditional radio frequency(RF)communication increasingly fails to meet the demands of high-speed deep space communication.Various spacefaring nations have undertaken research on deep space optical communication technology.Optical communication is a crucial means of achieving space communication.Compared to traditional RF communication,optical communication offers advantages such as high communication speed,small terminal payload,strong anti-interference capabilities and so on,making it more suitable for ultra-long-distance deep space communication.Currently,the United States leads in research and has successfully conducted two deep space optical communication demonstrations.This paper provides a comprehensive review of existing research plans and demonstration results in deep space optical communication.It analyzes the key technologies for implementing deep space optical communication,reflects on the developmental history,and contemplates the future prospects of deep space optical communication.

Abstract:The UV atmospheric transmission theory and the non-line of sight single scattering channel model were introduced.According to the model,the transmission loss caused by atmospheric channel under different structure design was quantitatively analyzed.Attenuation was quantitatively simulated under different atmospheres,communication patterns and structure parameters.Experimental results show that attenuation increases with increasing transmission distance;under different visibility,attenuation increasing different,and the higher visibility,the less attenuation,the far transmission distance;transmission distance increases with decreasing launching elevation and receiving elevation,and influence degree of launching elevation is more series than receiving elevation;transmission distance increases with increasing beam divergence angle and decreasing field angle,and influence degree of field angle is more series than beam divergence angle.

Abstract:The performance of non-line-of-sight ultraviolet (UV) scattering communication depends largely on atmospheric parameters. In this paper, we consider haze, fog, two common types of aerosols, and introduce the density and size of aerosols as variables to study the channel path loss for the UV scattering communications. We modify a Monte-Carlo based multiple-scattering model and provide fitting functions to replace the complex calculations of Mie theory, which can be used to obtain the atmospheric coefficients and phase functions for the aerosols. Simulation results reveal that, given fixed elevation angles, the channel path loss is related to both communication range, the aerosol density, and size of aerosols. For a short communication range, an increase of aerosol density can reduce the path loss, which improves the performance of UV scattering communication. However, when the communication range is extended, the path loss will fall first and then rise with density of aerosols. This phenomenon also occurs for an increase of fog drop size. The density or size of aerosols that has the lowest path loss is inversely proportional to the communication range.

Abstract:The solar blind ultraviolet (UV) spectrum provides unique opportunities for wireless communications and sensing. We present recent experimental and analytical results in non-line-of-sight UV channel characterization and modeling, including impulse response and path loss. Path loss predictions are validated with experimental measurements outdoors. The effects of multiple scattering are captured and demonstrate significant dominance in some atmospheric conditions.

Abstract:In this work, the visible light communication (VLC) and deep ultraviolet light communication (DUVLC) systems under an artificial fog channel are established, into which a fog channel simulator based on an acrylic box connected to a fog generator through a pipe is introduced. The VLC and DUVLC systems are based on line-of-sight (LOS) channel and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) channel with a large receiving angle about 90°, respectively. Under the influence of fog concentration, the transmission performance of the VLC and DUVLC systems is further analyzed and compared, including path loss, received signal quality and bit error rate (BER). Both VLC and DUVLC links were applied, and the BER of the integrated system was experimentally collected. The results show that the lower the fog concentration, the better the transmission performance of the VLC system, while the transmission performance of the DUVLC system is worse. Furthermore, the transmission distance and received angle should be considered for the NLOS-based DUVLC system, which can achieve communication at a distance of 10 cm and a receiving angle of 100° under the influence of dense fog. Moreover, the two links, DUVLC and VLC, are simultaneously applied for information transmission, which verifies that the dual-band integrated system can be well adapted to a fog environment. This study not only provides experimental support for the application of the VLC and DUVLC composite system but also demonstrates the possibility of applying the dual-band system in fog environments to a variety of complex outdoor scenarios.

Abstract:Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) scattering channel impulse response in the deep UV solar-blind spectrum band is investigated. Taking into account a light source power angular distribution and applying a photon tracing technique, Monte Carlo simulation is performed to obtain the channel impulse response and associated path loss. Some comparisons are carried out with an existing single scattering channel model, as well as field measurements in both the impulse response model and path loss, to demonstrate modeling accuracy. The importance of considering multiple versus single-scattering in the analysis is shown. The results provide guidelines for study of limitations to data rate and communication range in NLOS UV communications.

Abstract:According to different UV communication model, a short models for non-line of sight single scattering channel model was presented in this paper, and its accuracy and efficiency were verified by experiment. Base on this model, simulation and analysis of the energy loss with different transmitting distances and weather condition were made, in order to provide a theoretical basis for energy analyzing of UV communication system. The simulation results show that short model can not only achieve accelerated ratio of 10 5, but also assure the simulation accuracy. The visibility has little effect on the energy change when communication distance is small; and with distance increasing, the energy attenuation increases rapidly especially under misty weather. That is, the lower the visibility is, the steeper the energy attenuation curve becomes, whereas the more gentle curve becomes.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent and rapid developments in deep ultraviolet LEDs, solar blind ultraviolet filters, and detectors, this article reviews wireless UV technology used for communications and sensing in either line-of-sight or non-line-of-sight channel conditions. We present the state-of-the-art of associated systems and their components and discuss related issues including communication link characterization, channel modeling, and link capacity study, as well as transceiver design, link duplexing, multiple access, and networking. We also envision applications in the commercial and military sectors.

Abstract:We report some latest experimental results on non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) scattering communication channel characteristics. Those results include both channel path losses and impulse responses, critical for UV communication system design. Path losses were measured using a UV light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) based test-bed, while impulse responses by a UV laser based test-bed. The effects of transmitter and receiver pointing angles, separation distance and transmit beam angle are demonstrated.

Abstract:Considering strong signal attenuation of the large-angle non-line-of-sight (NLOS) link achieved due to the ultraviolet (UV) scattering properties, we propose to increase the UV communication link gain under a large scattering angle via generating agglomerate fog within a certain range as a secondary light source. In this study, a channel model with locally strong scatterers from agglomerate fog is proposed based on Monte Carlo ray-tracing approaches. Mie theory is adopted to calculate the atmospheric channel parameters, to further evaluate the link gain of a channel under non-uniform atmosphere. The performance of scattering system in the presence of fog conditions depends on the relative positions of the light source to the fog and to the receiver. The link gain results reveal the transmission capabilities for different scattering channel geometries, and give the optimal spray point location within a 10 m communication range. We further establish a foggy NLOS system using an agglomerate fog generator to verify our research in the real environment. The results show that the received signal strength of the NLOS link can be effectively enhanced by constructing scatterers in the atmospheric channel, which significantly decreases the bit-error rate (BER).

Abstract:With rapid advances of solar blind ultraviolet LED and ultraviolet detecting technology in recent years, ultraviolet communication gradually becomes a research hotspot due to its inherent advantages: low solar background noise, non-line-of-sight(NLOS) and good secrecy. The strong scattering characteristics in atmospheric render ultraviolet waveband the ideal choice for achieving NLOS optical communication. This paper reviews the research history and status of ultraviolet communication both in China and abroad, and especially introduces three main issues of ultraviolet communication: channel model, system analysis and design, light sources and detectors. For each aspect, current open issues and prospective research directions are analyzed.

Abstract:The bit error rate performance of non-line-of-sight ultraviolet communication through atmospheric turbulence is studied. The communication performance degradation under different strengths of turbulence is evaluated. Particularly, under strong turbulence conditions, the communication distance can be shortened by 30%, or at a given distance the communication rate can be reduced by half than the counterpart of no turbulence.

Abstract:Ultraviolet (UV) wireless is very suitable for local area Non-line of sight(NLOS) dedicated covert communication. Overcoming the path loss and delay spread from NLOS channel is a critical mission for the UV NLOS transmitter. In the first part of this paper, the main recent short distance line of sight (LOS) and long distance NLOS UV communication transmitters are reviewed. Next, “UV NLOS acquisition tracking pointing (ATP)” is introduced. Then, “UV high speed modulation technology”, “high-power UV source” and etc. are analyzed and summarized. The prospect of “High repetition rate high power UV pulse modulation” and “High power sub-millisecond UV pulse OFDM modulation” is put forward in the end.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive review of channel models for deep space communications.Based on the characteristics of environment, deep space channels can be divided into three kinds, i.e.,near Earth link, interstellar link and near planet link. The modeling for different kinds of channels are summarized respectively, and some simulation results are provided in this paper. In addition, according to the development trend of deep space communications, optical wave will become an important carrier in the future. Therefore, deep space optical communication is also briefly introduced. Finally, challenges of deep space channel modeling are pointed out and future research direction is also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, experimental measurements of path loss and pulse broadening in long-distance non-line-of-sight (N-LOS) ultraviolet (UV) communications are reported and analyzed, with measurements at distances up to 4 km. The comparison of these results with a multiple-scattering channel model based on the Monte Carlo simulation of photon propagation provides strong evidence of the validity of this modeling approach. Additionally, channel models incorporating the effects of turbulence are also considered, but mismatch between experimental results and predictions of the turbulence models suggest the potential for model refinement. Overall, the experimental and simulation results presented here serve to advance the study of NLOS UV channel modeling, an essential component of communication system design.
