Abstract:Utilizing an empirical path loss model proposed in the first paper of a two-part series, the bit error rate performance of short-range non-line-of-sight ultraviolet communication receivers is analyzed. Typical photodetector models and modulation formats are considered. Our results provide semi-analytical prediction of the achievable communication performance as a function of system and channel parameters, and serve as a basis for system design.

Abstract:Motivated by rapid advances in solar blind ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs), filters and photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), together with unique UV atmospheric propagation characteristics, a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) UV Communication test-bed has been recently built and utilized for extensive experimental evaluation of performance of NLOS UV links in outdoor environments. Towards this end, key link components are first characterized and their limitations are identified. The tradeoffs among communication range, received number of photons, and bit-error-rate are revealed via field measurement results. Wavelength diversity is achieved by utilizing combinations of sources and detectors centered at different wavelengths in the solar blind band. It is demonstrated that signals can be reliably transmitted to their destinations of dozens of meters away through an NLOS channel. Although all reported results in this paper are based on open field experiments, it is found that reflections from surrounding objects such as trees and buildings can enhance the received signal strength, up to an order of magnitude increase in the received number of photons in some cases, thus significantly improving link performance.

Abstract:Rich atmospheric scattering in the ultraviolet (UV) enables non-line-of sight (NLOS) communications, opening a new optical paradigm. In this paper, we incorporate an experimentally validated NLOS channel path loss model and quantitatively predict the performance of a combination of modulation and coding techniques. Our study includes OOK, PPM, MPPM, repetition coding and trellis coding. We consider both Poisson and Gaussian noise assumptions, appropriate for different operating regimes, with a focus on achievable range as a critical parameter in NLOS operation.

Abstract:We consider outdoor non-line-of-sight deep ultraviolet (UV) solar blind communications at ranges up to 100 m, with different transmitter and receiver geometries. We propose an empirical channel path loss model, and fit the model based on extensive measurements. We observe range-dependent power decay with a power exponent that varies from 0.4 to 2.4 with varying geometry. We compare with the single scattering model, and show that the single scattering assumption leads to a model that is not accurate for small apex angles. Our model is then used to study fundamental communication system performance trade-offs among transmitted optical power, range, link geometry, data rate, and bit error rate. Both weak and strong solar background radiation scenarios are considered to bound detection performance. These results provide guidelines to system design. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The wireless ultraviolet (UV) communication technology has received great attention for either short-range high data-rate services or medium-to-large range low-rate sensing applications. However, performance of a UV link is limited by multiple constraints from the current UV laser source and detector technology, and atmospheric link conditions. This paper analyzes performance of both line of sight (LOS) and non-line of sight (NLOS) UV links in terms of signal to noise ratio and bit error rate of the detector. Roles of different parameters, such as data rate, communication range, transmitter power, beam and focal angle, receiving angle and field of view, are studied. Receiving powers for two typical links demonstrate square and linear decaying laws with respect to the communication range respectively. Compared with an LOS link, an NLOS link significantly degrades detection performance from one up to three orders of magnitude for the range from hundreds of meters down to meters.

Abstract:The non-line-of-sight ultraviolet single-scatter approximate model is usually used to study the channel characteristics and system performance due to its simplification. In this paper, a performance evaluation system based on the approximate model is established, which includes four aspects, namely, packet error rate, average transmitting power, bandwidth utilizing efficiency and data transmission rate. Under the condition that Gaussian noise distribution is considered in channel model, the performance of different modulation schemes is evaluated. Finally, give the performance metrics that the system can achieve within 100 meters.

Abstract:Ultraviolet communication (UVC) has emerged as a promising solution for close-range communication within the intricate electromagnetic setting. The atmosphere's attenuation, however, restricts the scope and rate of communication. We demonstrated a line-of-sight (LOS) UV communication system. In our system, we employed ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in our system to transmit the signal light with a broad radiation angle and use lenses to enhance the communication range. We propose a combined approach of theory and practice to analyze the feasibility of a LOS UVC system.

Abstract:We evaluate the link gains of the ultraviolet non-line-of-sight model under different altitudes based on the Monte Carlo ray tracing method. We first evaluate the scattering and attenuation coefficients under different altitudes. Then, we evaluate the link gain of the small and large transmitting-receiving angles. The bit error rate (BER) performance is evaluated assuming on-off keying (OOK) modulation and the maximum likelihood (ML) detection. We consider the mixed Gaussian distribution (MGD) of the PMT received signal. Finally we investigate the maximum transmission rates under different altitudes with respect to the communication distance.

Abstract:The performance of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) communication receiver has been analyzed under an assumption of no inter-symbol interference (ISI) in the literature. However, ISI may become detrimental when the data rate increases in a multiple scattering UV channel. We consider relatively high data rate and develop a performance model with the ISI effect due to channel delay spread. Both analytical derivation and newly reported experimental results on impulse response and path loss are introduced and incorporated. The results reveal the close connection between bit error rate (BER) performance and data rate in different transmit/receive geometry, and the power penalty compared with that of an ISI-free system.

Abstract:The full-duplex optical communications can be achieved simply by separating the transmitting link and the receiving link in the space. However, it is challenging to achieve the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) full-duplex ultraviolet (UV) communication due to the serious self-interference caused by the strong multiple scattering effects of UV signals. To explore the capacity of NLOS full-duplex UV communications, in this paper, we first quantify the self-interference using an analytical channel impulse response function. Based on the quantified self-interference, we then derive the error rate and the corresponding achievable information rate (AIR) for on-off keying modulation, 4-digital-pulse-interval modulation and 4-pulse-position modulation. We further propose a self-interference cancelling (SIC) method to mitigate the impacts of self-interferences. Simulation results show that the proposed SIC method can significantly improve the error rate and AIR performances. Besides, we find that the NLOS full-duplex UV communication will gradually lose its advantage over the NLOS half-duplex UV communication as either the communication distance or the elevation angle increases. However, using the proposed SIC method, the NLOS full-duplex UV communication can hold its advantage in a wide range of system geometries.

Abstract:Determining the position of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) targets using traditional optical positioning methods remains a challenge. Recently, a NLOS optical positioning method using ultraviolet (UV) signals was proposed to enhance the single-scattering links of UV communications. Practical UV communication suffers from low achievable information rate due to the wide pulse spreading effect caused by strong scattering. Full-duplex techniques can be employed to improve the achievable information rate. However, full-duplex techniques introduce severe self-interference (SI) to transmitters of UV communications, which will inevitably degrade the performance of NLOS optical positioning. In this work, we propose a NLOS optical positioning method for full-duplex ultraviolet communications. To mitigate the influence of SI, we first approximate the path loss of the SI as a Fourier series (FS), then subtract the SI from the receiving power for calculating the location and pointing angles of the transmitter. Numerical results indicate that the proposed FS can will approximate the SI calculated from Monte-Carlo simulation models. Besides, we found that the proposed NLOS UV positioning method for full-duplex UV communications can achieve a positioning error of less than 3 meters and an azimuth error of less than $\mathbf{1. 2}$ degrees within typical transceiver geometries up to 100 meters, significantly improving performance compared to positioning under scenarios with unresolved SI.

Abstract:Motivated by recent advances in solid-state incoherent ultraviolet sources and solar blind detectors, we study communication link performance over a range of less than I kin with a bit error rate (BER) below 10(-3) in solar blind non-line-of-sight situation. The widely adopted yet complex single scattering channel model is significantly simplified by means of a closed-form expression for tractable analysis. Path loss is given as a function of transceiver geometry as well as atmospheric scattering and attenuation and is compared with experimental data for model validation. The BER performance of a shot-noise-limited receiver under this channel model is demonstrated. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We report some latest experimental results on non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) scattering communication channel characteristics. Those results include both channel path losses and impulse responses, critical for UV communication system design. Path losses were measured using a UV light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) based test-bed, while impulse responses by a UV laser based test-bed. The effects of transmitter and receiver pointing angles, separation distance and transmit beam angle are demonstrated.

Abstract:Ultraviolet (UV) wireless is very suitable for local area Non-line of sight(NLOS) dedicated covert communication. Overcoming the path loss and delay spread from NLOS channel is a critical mission for the UV NLOS transmitter. In the first part of this paper, the main recent short distance line of sight (LOS) and long distance NLOS UV communication transmitters are reviewed. Next, “UV NLOS acquisition tracking pointing (ATP)” is introduced. Then, “UV high speed modulation technology”, “high-power UV source” and etc. are analyzed and summarized. The prospect of “High repetition rate high power UV pulse modulation” and “High power sub-millisecond UV pulse OFDM modulation” is put forward in the end.

Abstract:Motivated by optical covert communication that can support both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenario, we demonstrate the possiblilty of the high data rate communication using deep ultraviolet (UV) light emitting-diode (LED). Both the LOS and NLOS UV communication links over realistic distances have been built. In LOS communication, we transmit data at rate from 2.5 Mbps to 20 Mbps in distances of 10 meters, 20 meters, and 30 meters. While in NLOS communication experiment, we test the channel over 6 meters at the reflection angle of 90 degree, which is reflected by different solid materials. The transmitter adopts On-Off Keying (OOK) modulation, and the receiver part consists of a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and an oscilloscope. We process data on a computer in an offline manner, where supporting vector machine-based approach for signal detection is adopted. The experimental results show that in the LOS condition, the UV LED can provide stable communication at symbol rate 20 Mbps with bit-error rate (BER) below 2%in distance of 20 meters. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the UV photons can be reflected by smooth solid material at 90 degree where symbol rate 10 Mbps with BER below 2%can be achieved.

This work further extends an existing single-scattering coplanar analytical model to noncoplanar geometry. The model is derived as a function of geometric parameters and atmospheric characteristics. Its behavior is numerically studied in different noncoplanar geometric settings.

Abstract:In this paper, experimental measurements of path loss and pulse broadening in long-distance non-line-of-sight (N-LOS) ultraviolet (UV) communications are reported and analyzed, with measurements at distances up to 4 km. The comparison of these results with a multiple-scattering channel model based on the Monte Carlo simulation of photon propagation provides strong evidence of the validity of this modeling approach. Additionally, channel models incorporating the effects of turbulence are also considered, but mismatch between experimental results and predictions of the turbulence models suggest the potential for model refinement. Overall, the experimental and simulation results presented here serve to advance the study of NLOS UV channel modeling, an essential component of communication system design.

Abstract:Atmospheric scattering for ultraviolet signals enables non-line-of-sight communication of a transmitter-receiver pair on-the-move and adaptive network configuration. In this work, we first develop an experimentally validated path loss model which characterizes both multiple scattering and arbitrary pointing with noncoplanar geometry. Then we discuss how to achieve full duplexing. We suggest transmission throughput as a metric to evaluate the performance of a wireless network consisting of randomly distributed nodes operating in such a channel. We further study the effects of some key network parameters including node spatial density, transmission probability and signal detection threshold via the lower bound of the transmission throughput. Performance optimization in the parameter space is performed numerically and simulation results are demonstrated.

Abstract:Ultraviolet (UV) is a promising enabling technology for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) optical wireless communication. However, the communication range is limited due to large path loss and low transmitted power from the light source. We thus consider end-to-end communication through a serial relayed link. Each pair of the relay nodes shares information via a NLOS UV channel whose path loss was measured through a test campaign. Considering possible interference from neighboring nodes and spatial reuse, we propose cooperative reception at the relay node to achieve performance close to the quantum limited case. The benefits in range extension and power savings of the UV relay network are demonstrated through error performance and data rate analysis, as well as numerical simulation. Light weight nodes with low power consumption are shown to be feasible to implement and deploy.
