Abstract:Motivated by the recent and rapid developments in deep ultraviolet LEDs, solar blind ultraviolet filters, and detectors, this article reviews wireless UV technology used for communications and sensing in either line-of-sight or non-line-of-sight channel conditions. We present the state-of-the-art of associated systems and their components and discuss related issues including communication link characterization, channel modeling, and link capacity study, as well as transceiver design, link duplexing, multiple access, and networking. We also envision applications in the commercial and military sectors.

Abstract:Recent advances in semiconductor laser and light emitting diode devices, able to efficiently operate in the solar blind regime, have brought the oblivious ultraviolet C-Band (UV-C) communications to the fore again. The non-light-of-sight transmission ability as well as the negligible background noise effect are a few of the intriguing benefits offered by this alternative broadband wireless solution. Motivated by such inherent characteristics, the current survey presents a quick and clear entry point to the topic, useful to the researchers who first get confronted with UV-C communications. To better understand the UV-C systems, a brief classification in the introductory section and a trace back to the historical evolution of this technology from its very beginnings to the current trends are provided. Then, several aspects related to the transceiver device characteristics are addressed, whereas particular emphasis is given on channel modeling including the major degrading effects, such as absorption and scattering. Modulation and multiple access schemes as well as other ways for performance enhancement as diversity and encoding techniques are also summarized. Since networking is necessary to overcome the short UV-C range, interference, connectivity, and coverage issues are thoroughly investigated. Finally, the study is concluded with a discussion regarding the challenges needed to make UV-C systems able to meet the high demands of the next generation wireless networks.

Abstract:With rapid advances of solar blind ultraviolet LED and ultraviolet detecting technology in recent years, ultraviolet communication gradually becomes a research hotspot due to its inherent advantages: low solar background noise, non-line-of-sight(NLOS) and good secrecy. The strong scattering characteristics in atmospheric render ultraviolet waveband the ideal choice for achieving NLOS optical communication. This paper reviews the research history and status of ultraviolet communication both in China and abroad, and especially introduces three main issues of ultraviolet communication: channel model, system analysis and design, light sources and detectors. For each aspect, current open issues and prospective research directions are analyzed.

Abstract:Ultraviolet (UV) wireless is very suitable for local area Non-line of sight(NLOS) dedicated covert communication. Overcoming the path loss and delay spread from NLOS channel is a critical mission for the UV NLOS transmitter. In the first part of this paper, the main recent short distance line of sight (LOS) and long distance NLOS UV communication transmitters are reviewed. Next, “UV NLOS acquisition tracking pointing (ATP)” is introduced. Then, “UV high speed modulation technology”, “high-power UV source” and etc. are analyzed and summarized. The prospect of “High repetition rate high power UV pulse modulation” and “High power sub-millisecond UV pulse OFDM modulation” is put forward in the end.

Abstract:The solar blind ultraviolet (UV) spectrum provides unique opportunities for wireless communications and sensing. We present recent experimental and analytical results in non-line-of-sight UV channel characterization and modeling, including impulse response and path loss. Path loss predictions are validated with experimental measurements outdoors. The effects of multiple scattering are captured and demonstrate significant dominance in some atmospheric conditions.

Abstract:Radio frequency (RF) technology is widely adopted in indoor wireless communications due to its attractive benefits such as low cost and easy deployment. However, this technology also faces certain challenges such as spectrum scarcity and security concerns. In this article, ultraviolet (UV) communication is introduced to tackle these issues thanks to its distinctive benefits, for example, huge bandwidth without licensing, scattering and reflection propagations, communication security, and sterilization and disinfection. Initially, a comprehensive comparison among UV, RF, and other alternative approaches is summarized. Then, the UV indoor communication system with a detailed transceiver design is presented. Following that, UV representative scenarios for indoor communications and related performance indicators are investigated. Finally, future potential applications of UV technology for indoor scenarios are explored, and the challenges that deserve further research are also discussed.
On Connectivity of Wireless Ultraviolet Networks

Abstract:Non-line-of-sight optical communication can be enabled by modulating signals into an UV carrier and then transmitting them through an atmospheric scattering channel. This paper investigates some connectivity issues for such UV communication networks. We discuss k-connectivity in a multiuser interference environment. Compared with the studied case without considering multiuser interference in which more users bring higher probability of k-connectivity, a large number of noncoordinated users cause higher interference and limit the network performance. Thus, node density should be carefully designed in accordance with network configurations. Four typical scenarios are discussed, depending on whether each node transmitter is capable of adjusting its pointing angle and tracking a target receiver. They lead to different link losses and consequently the network k-connectivity properties. One of the cases simplifying the transceiver design for adjustable pointing is also illustrated, where each node is equipped with multiple transmitters to be activated via electronic on/off switching. The number of transmitters on a single node then becomes another critical parameter whose effect on k-connectivity is studied. These results will provide a guideline for system and network designers.
Approximate Performance Analysis of Wireless Ultraviolet Links

Abstract:The wireless ultraviolet (UV) communication technology has received great attention for either short-range high data-rate services or medium-to-large range low-rate sensing applications. However, performance of a UV link is limited by multiple constraints from the current UV laser source and detector technology, and atmospheric link conditions. This paper analyzes performance of both line of sight (LOS) and non-line of sight (NLOS) UV links in terms of signal to noise ratio and bit error rate of the detector. Roles of different parameters, such as data rate, communication range, transmitter power, beam and focal angle, receiving angle and field of view, are studied. Receiving powers for two typical links demonstrate square and linear decaying laws with respect to the communication range respectively. Compared with an LOS link, an NLOS link significantly degrades detection performance from one up to three orders of magnitude for the range from hundreds of meters down to meters.

Abstract:We report some latest experimental results on non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) scattering communication channel characteristics. Those results include both channel path losses and impulse responses, critical for UV communication system design. Path losses were measured using a UV light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) based test-bed, while impulse responses by a UV laser based test-bed. The effects of transmitter and receiver pointing angles, separation distance and transmit beam angle are demonstrated.

Abstract:As an important branch of free-space optical (FSO) communication technology, ultraviolet (UV) communication is mainly applied to mobile communication platforms represented by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). With the development of LEDs and UV detector devices, UAV UV communication technology has shown great potential in related fields. But at the same time, it also faces some challenges. As the communication distance increases, the path loss of the UV communication system can reach 0.12dB/m, and the variation in bit error rate (BER) can rapidly deteriorate from the order of 10(-8) to 10(-1). Additionally, the UV communication system mounted on a UAV platform can emit radiation into the environment, which may have negative effects on human health when the radiation intensity exceeds 0.5 mu W/cm(2). These issues can be summarized as the availability, stability, and effectiveness of UAV-based UV communication technology. This paper aims to comprehensively address both UAVs and UV communication, providing a detailed introduction to the challenges and solutions facing UAV-based UV communication technology. Focusing on the specific aspects of these three issues, the paper first introduces the research background, value, and challenges of UAV-based UV communication technology, and investigates the current research status of UV communication channel models and positioning techniques. In order to solve the problem of UV environmental radiation, the article goes on to introduce beamforming and power control in UV optical communication technology. To solve the problem of reducing signal attenuation and increasing the communication range, the article introduces diversity technology and networking technology. In order to balance the communication quality and communication rate during UAV movement, the article introduces adaptive modulation and adaptive coding technology. Finally, the future development direction of UAV UV communication technology is summarised.
Experimental Performance Evaluation of Non-Line-of-sight Ultraviolet Communication Systems

Abstract:Motivated by rapid advances in solar blind ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs), filters and photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), together with unique UV atmospheric propagation characteristics, a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) UV Communication test-bed has been recently built and utilized for extensive experimental evaluation of performance of NLOS UV links in outdoor environments. Towards this end, key link components are first characterized and their limitations are identified. The tradeoffs among communication range, received number of photons, and bit-error-rate are revealed via field measurement results. Wavelength diversity is achieved by utilizing combinations of sources and detectors centered at different wavelengths in the solar blind band. It is demonstrated that signals can be reliably transmitted to their destinations of dozens of meters away through an NLOS channel. Although all reported results in this paper are based on open field experiments, it is found that reflections from surrounding objects such as trees and buildings can enhance the received signal strength, up to an order of magnitude increase in the received number of photons in some cases, thus significantly improving link performance.

Abstract:Utilizing an empirical path loss model proposed in the first paper of a two-part series, the bit error rate performance of short-range non-line-of-sight ultraviolet communication receivers is analyzed. Typical photodetector models and modulation formats are considered. Our results provide semi-analytical prediction of the achievable communication performance as a function of system and channel parameters, and serve as a basis for system design.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm communication has received increasing attention thanks to its intriguing advantages, such as low costs, high mobility, and deployment convenience. However, this technology is also facing certain new challenges, for example, RF spectrum scarcity, interference, and network connectivity. To this end, ultraviolet (UV) communication is introduced in this article to tackle these problems due to its distinctive benefits, such as license-free operation, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and the ability of non-line-of-sight transmission. First, a comparison between UV communication and other alternatives is presented. Then the structural designs of the high-capability UAV and the low-capability UAV, the system communication protocol and mutual interference, and the network topology of the UV-based UAV swarm are investigated. Further, the bit error rate performance, data rate, and communication range are analyzed. In the end, an artificial-intelligence-aided UV-based UAV swarm system is put forward to tackle users' complicated requirements. Simultaneously, the challenges are discussed to direct future research work.

Abstract:This thesis studies modeling of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) scattering channels and the corresponding communication link performance. The research focuses on the channel impulse response and path loss models based on extensive field measurements and theoretical characterization. In NLOS UV scattering environments, transmitted signals suffer from severe atmospheric attenuation and fading before arriving at a receiver, such as absorption, scattering, and turbulence. The thesis is devoted to development of analytical and experimental models to characterize NLOS UV communication channels.The author conducts comprehensive channel measurements for short communication ranges up to a few hundred meters and proposes an empirical path loss model. Meanwhile, an algorithm is developed to simulate the NLOS UV channel impulse response and path loss based on photons stochastic migration in the atmosphere. Effects of atmosphere conditions on single scattering and multiple scattering are investigated. An empirical curve-fitting model is developed to simplify the modeling work. Monte Carlo simulations provide good channel prediction for field tests in many scenarios. Then short range communication link performance is studied based on the theoretical models, and limitations by power and channel bandwidth are examined. Link budget results are also extended to long range communication links up to 5 kilometers. In this case, atmosphere turbulence becomes pronounced, and thus the intensity fluctuation at the receiver is mathematically modeled. These modeling results can provide insight into the performance tradeoffs and algorithm design for practical NLOS UV communication systems.

Abstract:Atmospheric scattering for ultraviolet signals enables non-line-of-sight communication of a transmitter-receiver pair on-the-move and adaptive network configuration. In this work, we first develop an experimentally validated path loss model which characterizes both multiple scattering and arbitrary pointing with noncoplanar geometry. Then we discuss how to achieve full duplexing. We suggest transmission throughput as a metric to evaluate the performance of a wireless network consisting of randomly distributed nodes operating in such a channel. We further study the effects of some key network parameters including node spatial density, transmission probability and signal detection threshold via the lower bound of the transmission throughput. Performance optimization in the parameter space is performed numerically and simulation results are demonstrated.

Abstract:Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) scattering channel impulse response in the deep UV solar-blind spectrum band is investigated. Taking into account a light source power angular distribution and applying a photon tracing technique, Monte Carlo simulation is performed to obtain the channel impulse response and associated path loss. Some comparisons are carried out with an existing single scattering channel model, as well as field measurements in both the impulse response model and path loss, to demonstrate modeling accuracy. The importance of considering multiple versus single-scattering in the analysis is shown. The results provide guidelines for study of limitations to data rate and communication range in NLOS UV communications.

Abstract:Ultraviolet communication (UVC) has emerged as a promising solution for close-range communication within the intricate electromagnetic setting. The atmosphere's attenuation, however, restricts the scope and rate of communication. We demonstrated a line-of-sight (LOS) UV communication system. In our system, we employed ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in our system to transmit the signal light with a broad radiation angle and use lenses to enhance the communication range. We propose a combined approach of theory and practice to analyze the feasibility of a LOS UVC system.
