Abstract:Microcapsules with epoxy curing agent were successfully prepared by an in-situ polymerization route with epoxy resin and poly-(urea-formaldehyde) as core and shell materials, respectively. The synthetic conditions were optimized by a comprehensive investigation on raw materials consumption, size distribution, and surface morphology. Preparation of microcapsules with high wrap ratio was also demonstrated. The as-synthesized microcapsules were studied using various characterizations techniques, including optical microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and contact angle meter. Spherical microcapsules (size: similar to 60 mu m) with smooth surface were obtained when the stirring rate was 400 rpm and the amount of core materials is 76 wt %. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:In order to improve the property of water-resistantce and aging stability of urea-formaldehyde microcapsule,melamine,polyvinyl alcohol and phenol were added for the modification,respectively.Microcapsules with good heat-resistance and water-resistance can be obtained by optimizing the reaction conditions.The surface feature of the microcapsule was recorded with optical microscopy(OM).Microstructure of the microcapsule was confirmed with Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR).Thermal properties of the microcapsules were analyzed with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).The results show that thermal stability of the three modified microcapsules are all improved,while phenol-microcapsules have the best thermal stability;hydrophobicity of both melamine-microcapsule and phenol-microcapsule are enhanced,while weakened for PVA-microcapsule.

Abstract:Microcapsules with adequate performance are required for self-healing materials. Novel self-repairing microcapsules with better heat resistance and water resistance were prepared by introducing melamine to urea–formaldehyde resin as wall material. The as-synthesized microcapsules were studied by various characterizations techniques, including scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscope (OM), particle size analyzer (PSA), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and contact angle meter. Spherical poly(urea–formaldehyde) microcapsules (mean size: 96μm) and melamine modified poly(urea–formaldehyde) microcapsules (mean size: 46μm, wall thickness: ∼3μm) were obtained when the amount of melamine was 6–8wt% and the amount of core materials was 75wt%. After modified by melamine, the water-resistance of microcapsule is improved and contact angle increases from 43° to 50°. The heat resistance, solvent resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance are improved because of triazine ring in melamine, which resulting in long storage time for microcapsule at room temperature.

Abstract:The self-healing poly(urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization with epoxy resin as the core materials.The optimum preparation technology of microcapsule was determined by studying the effect of raw material amount, reaction temperature, acidif ication value and curing time on microcapsule particle size distribution and surface morphology.The forming mechanism of microcapsule was investigated by inspecting the forming process of microcapsule.The microcapsule was added into urea-formaldehyde resin.The results show that:the microcapsules with high coating ratio, compact structure, and even particle size are prepared by the optimum prepration technology, the microcapsules can be reserved at room temperature for one week without agglomeration and rupture;adding 9% microcapsules into urea-formldehyde resin, the distribution of the microcapsules is uniform, the toughness of urea-formaldehyde resin composite is improved.

Abstract:Microcapsules were synthesized by in-situ polymerization with MUF resin modified by nano-Al2O3 as wall material and epoxy resin as the core material. The morphology, structure and thermal properties of the microcapsules were characterized by optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The microcapsules were applied to the epoxy resin matrix to prepare self-repair coating. The thermal property, mechanical properties, self-healing property and the electrochemical property of the coating were investigated. The results show that, when the core/wall ratio is 1.5 : 1 and the content of nano-Al2O3 is 4.5%, nano-Al2O3 is evenly distributed in the wall. The surface roughness and the thermal stability of microcapsules increase. When the microcapsules content is 5%, the thermal stability of the coating increases. The tensile strength, the bending strength, the impact strength and the bonding strength of the coating increase by 111.9%, 55.1%, 10.6% and 51.9%, respectively. The coating possesses good self-healing performance. The corrosion resistance of the coating increases with the increase of the microcapsule content.

Abstract:The curing process of self-healing microcapsules containing epoxy resin was studied with different shell material such as Poly (urea-formaldehyde), poly (melamine-urea-formaldehyde), Poly (urea-formaldehyde) modified by polyvinyl alcohol, and Poly (urea-formaldehyde) modified by phenol, respectively. The activation energy (Delta E) and the reaction order (n) have been obtained based on Kissinger method, Crane theory and Arrhenius equation. The results showed that: the curing process of epoxy resin as core material in self-healing microcapsules becomes more difficult compared with non-microencapsulated. The stability of shell material impacts on the cure process of core material. The resulting decomposition products of shell materials may participate in the curing reaction. So choosing suitable shell material is particularly important to self-healing microcapsules.

Abstract:Epoxy resin coated polystyrene self-repairing microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization,using epoxy matrix and the dilution benzyl alcohol as core materials,styrene /divinylbenzene as shell material.The effects of mass ratio of wall material to core material,emulsifier content,the reaction temperature and agitator velocity on microcapsule particle distribution and surface morphology were studied.The optimum preparation techniques are as follows:the mass ratio of wall material to core material is 3:10,n(styrene):n(divinylbenzene)is 10:1,the content of DBS and Arabic gum emulsifier is 3%,the reaction time is 8 h at 70～80 ℃.The microcapsules with close structure,even particle size were prepared.The microcapsules are obtained with average diameter 125 μm,film thickness 30～50 μm and content of core 72%.

Abstract:The utilization of interfacial polymerization in the preparation of microcapsules with a slow-controlled release has been shown to effectively improve pesticide efficacy and reduce environmental pollution. In this study, polyurea microcapsules loaded with lambda-cyhalothrin were prepared by an interfacial polymerization method using modified isocyanate (MDI) as the wall material and GT-34 as the initiator. The microcapsules were fully characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, etc., and release behaviors were investigated. The results indicated that the microcapsules had a smooth surface and uniform distribution, the average particle size of the microcapsules was 1.97 μm, and the encapsulation efficiency of lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules could reach 91.48%. Compared with other commercial formulations, the microcapsules exhibited an excellent sustained release property (>7 days) in a 50% acetonitrile aqueous solution (v/v). Subsequently, in vitro release studies showed that the lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules could consistently control the release of the core materials at different pH, temperature, and MDI addition amount conditions. The release of lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules was in accordance with the first-order model release, which was mainly by the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Furthermore, the biological activity on Myzus persicae showed that the microcapsules' persistence period was above 21 days, which was longer than that for the emulsifiable concentrate formulation.

Abstract:Melamine formaldehyde (MF) is a versatile and widely used chemical cross-linking agent in microcapsule shells for the encapsulation of oil phases in an aqueous continuum. However, it has not been possible to form MF microcapsules with water soluble actives, to achieve sustained/no release in aqueous environment. Herein, 5 types of MF based microcapsules were designed and synthesised with 4 polymers, including neutral and polar poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid), anionically charged biocompatible shellac and ion exchange resin polystyrene sulfonate as well as a superhydrophobic polymer precursor octadecyltrichlorosilane, via an in situ polymerisation method. Potassium chloride and allura red (dye, Mw = 496.42 g.mol(-1)) were used as models of inorganic and organic water soluble actives with low molar mass, respectively, to study their size distributions, encapsulation efficiencies, payloads, morphologies and release rates in aqueous environment. Effect on the Characterization of Metolachlor Polyurea Microcapsules with Urea Instead of Polyamines

Abstract:In this paper, a novel metolachlor microcapsules suspension (CS) was prepared by interfacial polymerization. Metolachlor polyurea microcapsules suspension was successfully prepared by urea instead of polyamines which could reduce the use of organic solvents and production costs. The synthesized microcapsules were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, Scanning Electron Microscope, Ultraviolet Spectrometry, Thermogravimetric analyses and particle size analyzer. In conclusion, the diameter of the urea microcapsules were the smallest (11.52 μm) and excellent encapsulation efficiency (81.45%). In addition, Urea microcapsules had compact microstructures and global shapes, which had a good thermal stability and metolachlor could be preserved better in the polyurea microcapsules. These results indicated that the prepared microcapsules by urea had better thermal storage properties and physicochemical property. The microcapsule suspension of metolachlor hasn't been researched yet. Therefore, it is significant to prepare microcapsule suspension. More importantly, there is no use of organic solvents in the preparation of microcapsules suspension, which avoided the pollution of solvents to the ecological environment. It is hoped that this polyurea material will be applied in the field of pesticide synthesis and polymers.

Abstract:Through the in-situ polymerization method,a kind of phase change materials microcapsule was prepared by using melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin as the shell material and a phase change material as the core,of which the melt point and phase change enthalpy are 24℃ and 225.5J/g respectively.The penetrability and strength of microcapsule were investigated by altering the mole ratio of urea to melamine.The thermal damage mechanism is that the phase change materials leak out from the microcapsule when they are heated,and the breakage of the shell was due to the thermal expansion of the core and shell materials at high temperature.The damage temperature of the microcapsule shell can be obtained by TGA.The strength of the shell was evaluated through observing the surface change under pressure by mean of scanning electron microscopy.The penetrability of the microcapsule was characterized in ethyl alcohol by mean of 752 spectrophotometer.As a result,the average diameter of the microcapsule is smaller than 5μm,and the particle size is centralized when the dropping rate of the solidifying solvent is less than 0.8mL/min.The mass loss temperature of the microcapsule can be further enhanced up to 30℃ while the reaction system contains 20%(mass fraction) urea.The microcapsules do not rupture under a pressure of 6.0MPa,and the core material leaks out very slowly from the microcapsule in ethyl alcohol.
Effects of microencapsulated abamectin on the mechanical, cross-linking, and release properties of PBS

Abstract:Herein, nanocomposite microencapsulated abamectin (A-G-G) have been prepared by composite coacervation method with gelatin and gum arabic as the wall materials and abamectin (A-W) as core material. The formation mechanism of A-G-G was determined by fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and other characterization methods. Then, polybutylene succinate (PBS)/A-G-G composite films with different contents of A-G-G microcapsules were prepared. The effects of adding A-G-G microcapsules on the mechanical and sustained-release properties of the composite films were studied. Results show that there is a strong interaction between the CO groups in PBS and free OH of the A-G-G microcapsules. With an increase in the A-G-G microcapsule content, the elongation at the break of composite films increases significantly. When the A-G-G content is 15 %, the elongation at break of the composite films reaches 178.6 ± 6.26 %. The maximum water absorption is 329 ± 5.84 %. Overall, the PBS/A-G-G composite films exhibit good slow-release performance.
Fabrication and characterization of β-cypermethrin-loaded PLA microcapsules prepared by emulsion-solvent evaporation: loading and release properties

Abstract:Microcapsulses can be designed to effectively encapsulate, protect, and control the release of pesticides. In this study, emulsion-solvent evaporation method was used to fabricate microcapsules using dichloromethane as the solvent, polylactic acid (PLA) as the carrier materials, poly(vinyl alcohol) as the emulsifier, and β-cypermethrin as the entrapped pesticide. The effects of process parameters on the microcapsules characteristics (size, loading content, and encapsulation efficiency) were investigated. Also, the release behavior of the β-cypermethrin was measured experimentally and modeled mathematically. Kinetic analysis indicated that release mechanism of β-cypermethrin was compatible to Fickian diffusion. By optimizing the process parameters, β-cypermethrin-loaded microcapsules were successfully produced with spherical shape, smooth surface, high encapsulation efficiency (> 80%), and a range of pesticide contents. These parameters could be adjusted to achieve delivery systems with desirable release profiles. The results are beneficial to develop delivery systems for rational and effective usage of pesticides.

Abstract:s: Microcapsules containing an organic solvent as an internal phase were prepared by the in situ polymerization of urea-formaldehyde without prepolymerization. The influences of system modifiers, pH value, and reaction time on the process of microencapsulation and the morphology of the microcapsules were investigated. When the microencapsulation is conducted in a system modified by PVA and with a pH value of 2.5 or lower, the microcapsule shells have good smoothness but less strength. When the system modifier is PAA and the pH value is 3.5, the shells of the microcapsules are of good smoothness, transparency and strength. The process of direct preparation of microcapsules by in situ polymerization of urea-formaldehyde was analyzed. It is shown that the interfacial behavior of the phases in the system plays an important role in the process of microencapsulation, and a slow and sufficient liquid/liquid phase separation effected by an appropriate system modifier under appropriate conditions is necessary for producing microcapsules of good morphology and mechanical strength.
Release-controlled microcapsules of thiamethoxam encapsulated in beeswax and their application in field

Abstract:Using beeswax as wrapping matrix, two types of release-controlled TM (thiamethoxam)/BK(beeswax-kaolin) microcapsules were prepared by adsorbing TM on kaolin and then encapsulated with beeswax, or directly wrapping TM with beeswax. The structure and morphology of the TM/BK microcapsules were characterized. The effects of different preparation methods, the particle size, pH conditions and different additives on the release property of the TM/BK microcapsules were investigated in water and soil column to compare the advantages of the two approaches. Finally, the insecticidal effect of the TM/BK microcapsules against sugarcane borer and rice planthopper was tested. The results show that the TM/BK microcapsules have a better sustained-release in both water and soil, and the release rate is different under different pH conditions. In addition, the releasing time of the TM/BK microcapsules can be modified by different preparation methods and combination of different additives. In the field applications, the insecticidal activity of the TM/BK microcapsules was better than that of non-sustained control group. Especially in the rice field test, 45 days after the application, the control group lost the activity against rice planthopper because of drug loss, whereas the TM/BK microcapsule group still retained about 90% of the insecticidal activity. The results suggest that the microcapsules have better agricultural application for insect control.
Pesticide Microcapsules Prepared by an Interfacial Polymerization Method

Abstract:Using fenitrothion as active ingredient, an interfacial polymerization method is described for improving the preparation of microcapsule formulations. The polymerization reaction was conducted following pretreatment with excess isocyanate. The capsule walls of the resulting microcapsules were significantly better than those produced by the traditional method, with the new microcapsules holding about twice as much pesticide. High temperature stability was greatly increased. The decomposition rate was decreased from 15 to about 2%. Rate of pesticide release was substantially reduced and could be varied under different conditions. As a result, this improvement in formulation provided significantly increased residual efficacy of the pesticide, allowing reduced application rates. This article also emphasizes research on the effect of different reaction conditions on microcapsule formation, and the measurement of pesticide release from the microcapsule into water. Rate of release could be controlled and adjusted by changes in several factors, such as interfacial polymerization reaction time, microcapsule particle size, pesticide and polymer proportions in the mixture, and proportions of two aqueous phase monomers. The resulting product met the criteria needed in a microcapsule formulation.

A flexible modulated pesticide release platform through poly(urethane-urea) microcapsules: effect of different crosslinkers compositions

Abstract:Background: Polymeric microcapsules (MCs) have become an important issue and have attracted increasing attention because of their tunable physical and chemical properties. Diverse shell structures can confer multiple properties on MCs. Results: Different polyols (1,4-butanediol and glycerin) and polyamines (triethylenetetramine and isophorondiamine) were selected as crosslinkers to obtain emamectin benzoate (EB)-loaded poly(urethane-urea) MCs (PU-MCs) by interfacial polymerization. The four obtained PU-MCs showed sphericity with different degrees of smoothness on their surfaces, and displayed a uniform size distribution ranging from 500 to 700 nm. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy showed that the shell thickness was roughly uniform, and was greatly influenced by the type and structure of the crosslinker. GI-MCs, prepared using glycerin and isophorondiamine, had the largest shell thickness. GT-MCs, obtained using glycerin and triethylenetetramine, had the highest encapsulation efficiency and drug-loading content, and BT-MCs, obtained using mixtures of 1,4-butanediol and triethylenetetramine, had the fastest release behavior. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the greater the degree of shell crosslinking, the higher decomposition temperature and the greater the thermal stability. A BT-MC suspension had the lowest viscosity and contact angle with the best wettability. Bioassay experiments showed that BT-MCs exhibited good insecticidal activity against Plutella xylostella larvae with a half-maximal lethal concentration of 4.19 mg/L. Furthermore, a BT-MC suspension showed good thermal and light stability, with potential applications in minimizing the toxicity of EB through sustained release. Conclusion: Various properties of EB-loaded PU-MCs were modulated through simple selection of different polyols and polyamines during fabrication, which might have an important role in constructing the pesticide delivery system and improving pesticide utilization. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
Versatile fabrication of nanocomposite microcapsules with controlled shell thickness and low permeability

Abstract:Novel ethyl phenylacetate (EPA)-loaded nanocomposite microcapsules with polyurea (PU) /poly (melamine formaldehyde) (PMF) shells were facilely and fabricated: by using silica nanoparticle-stabilized oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion template and subsequent interfacial reaction and in situ polymerization. SiO2 nanoparticles absorbed at the interface between oil and water to stabilize the o/w emulsions. The oil droplets containing EPA, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate-terminated poly (propylene glycol) (PPG-TDI) were subsequently reacted with MF prepolymer (pre-MF) dissolved in water phases. The interfacial reaction between pre-MF and IPDI produced interior PU walls. Meanwhile, the in situ polymerization of pre-MF generated exterior PMF walls. It was found that these in/out double walls were compact together. The resulting capsules had spherical shapes and rough exterior surfaces, and could be easily isolated, dried, and redispersed in epoxy resins. The size of the produced microcapsules was dependent on the concentration of SiO2 nanoparticles. The dynamic thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the capsules showed excellent thermal stability with little weight loss when exposed at 150 °C for 2 h. Interestingly, with a double PU/PMF shell, these capsules exhibited an extra-low permeability. Moreover, these microcapsules can also demonstrate exceelent magnetic responsiveness after introducing magnetic nanoparticles inside. We believe our microcapsules could be potential candidates in microcapsule engineering, self-healing composites, and drug-carrying systems.
