Abstract:Microcapsules with epoxy curing agent were successfully prepared by an in-situ polymerization route with epoxy resin and poly-(urea-formaldehyde) as core and shell materials, respectively. The synthetic conditions were optimized by a comprehensive investigation on raw materials consumption, size distribution, and surface morphology. Preparation of microcapsules with high wrap ratio was also demonstrated. The as-synthesized microcapsules were studied using various characterizations techniques, including optical microscope, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and contact angle meter. Spherical microcapsules (size: similar to 60 mu m) with smooth surface were obtained when the stirring rate was 400 rpm and the amount of core materials is 76 wt %. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Electrophoretic microcapsules were prepared via in-situ interfacial polymerization using ureaformaldehyde (UF) resin as the outer membrane and oil blue and TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed in tetrachloroethylene as core materials. The effects of reaction conditions for the synthesis of UF prepolymer on the morphology of microcapsules were investigated and the optimal reaction conditions were obtained by the orthogonal design. The results showed that the optimum reaction conditions were molar ratio of urea to formaldehyde 1:1.75, reaction temperature 75 ℃ , pH 8.5 and reaction time 1 h. The electrophoretic microcapsules prepared with such conditions had many merits, such as smooth inner and outer surface, transparence, good dispersity and complete morphology, etc.

Abstract:The self-healing poly(urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization with epoxy resin as the core materials.The optimum preparation technology of microcapsule was determined by studying the effect of raw material amount, reaction temperature, acidif ication value and curing time on microcapsule particle size distribution and surface morphology.The forming mechanism of microcapsule was investigated by inspecting the forming process of microcapsule.The microcapsule was added into urea-formaldehyde resin.The results show that:the microcapsules with high coating ratio, compact structure, and even particle size are prepared by the optimum prepration technology, the microcapsules can be reserved at room temperature for one week without agglomeration and rupture;adding 9% microcapsules into urea-formldehyde resin, the distribution of the microcapsules is uniform, the toughness of urea-formaldehyde resin composite is improved.

Abstract:In order to improve the property of water-resistantce and aging stability of urea-formaldehyde microcapsule,melamine,polyvinyl alcohol and phenol were added for the modification,respectively.Microcapsules with good heat-resistance and water-resistance can be obtained by optimizing the reaction conditions.The surface feature of the microcapsule was recorded with optical microscopy(OM).Microstructure of the microcapsule was confirmed with Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR).Thermal properties of the microcapsules were analyzed with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).The results show that thermal stability of the three modified microcapsules are all improved,while phenol-microcapsules have the best thermal stability;hydrophobicity of both melamine-microcapsule and phenol-microcapsule are enhanced,while weakened for PVA-microcapsule.

Abstract:Microcapsules with adequate performance are required for self-healing materials. Novel self-repairing microcapsules with better heat resistance and water resistance were prepared by introducing melamine to urea–formaldehyde resin as wall material. The as-synthesized microcapsules were studied by various characterizations techniques, including scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscope (OM), particle size analyzer (PSA), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and contact angle meter. Spherical poly(urea–formaldehyde) microcapsules (mean size: 96μm) and melamine modified poly(urea–formaldehyde) microcapsules (mean size: 46μm, wall thickness: ∼3μm) were obtained when the amount of melamine was 6–8wt% and the amount of core materials was 75wt%. After modified by melamine, the water-resistance of microcapsule is improved and contact angle increases from 43° to 50°. The heat resistance, solvent resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance are improved because of triazine ring in melamine, which resulting in long storage time for microcapsule at room temperature.

Abstract:s: Microcapsules containing an organic solvent as an internal phase were prepared by the in situ polymerization of urea-formaldehyde without prepolymerization. The influences of system modifiers, pH value, and reaction time on the process of microencapsulation and the morphology of the microcapsules were investigated. When the microencapsulation is conducted in a system modified by PVA and with a pH value of 2.5 or lower, the microcapsule shells have good smoothness but less strength. When the system modifier is PAA and the pH value is 3.5, the shells of the microcapsules are of good smoothness, transparency and strength. The process of direct preparation of microcapsules by in situ polymerization of urea-formaldehyde was analyzed. It is shown that the interfacial behavior of the phases in the system plays an important role in the process of microencapsulation, and a slow and sufficient liquid/liquid phase separation effected by an appropriate system modifier under appropriate conditions is necessary for producing microcapsules of good morphology and mechanical strength.

Abstract:Epoxy resin coated polystyrene self-repairing microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization,using epoxy matrix and the dilution benzyl alcohol as core materials,styrene /divinylbenzene as shell material.The effects of mass ratio of wall material to core material,emulsifier content,the reaction temperature and agitator velocity on microcapsule particle distribution and surface morphology were studied.The optimum preparation techniques are as follows:the mass ratio of wall material to core material is 3:10,n(styrene):n(divinylbenzene)is 10:1,the content of DBS and Arabic gum emulsifier is 3%,the reaction time is 8 h at 70～80 ℃.The microcapsules with close structure,even particle size were prepared.The microcapsules are obtained with average diameter 125 μm,film thickness 30～50 μm and content of core 72%.

Abstract:Microcapsules were synthesized by in-situ polymerization with MUF resin modified by nano-Al2O3 as wall material and epoxy resin as the core material. The morphology, structure and thermal properties of the microcapsules were characterized by optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The microcapsules were applied to the epoxy resin matrix to prepare self-repair coating. The thermal property, mechanical properties, self-healing property and the electrochemical property of the coating were investigated. The results show that, when the core/wall ratio is 1.5 : 1 and the content of nano-Al2O3 is 4.5%, nano-Al2O3 is evenly distributed in the wall. The surface roughness and the thermal stability of microcapsules increase. When the microcapsules content is 5%, the thermal stability of the coating increases. The tensile strength, the bending strength, the impact strength and the bonding strength of the coating increase by 111.9%, 55.1%, 10.6% and 51.9%, respectively. The coating possesses good self-healing performance. The corrosion resistance of the coating increases with the increase of the microcapsule content.

Abstract:Urea formaldehyde @ epoxy resin microcapsules were prepared by two steps in situ polymerization, and the morphology and composition of microcapsules with different mass ratios of core to wall material were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The microcapsules were added to the waterborne wood coatings to explore the effect of microcapsules on the properties of coatings and their self-repairing characteristics, and the gloss, hardness, adhesion, and impact resistance of the waterborne wood coatings were investigated. The results showed that when the concentration of microcapsule was 10.0% and the mass ratio of core to wall material was 0.83:1, the waterborne wood coatings had a good comprehensive performance and less negative impact. In the scratch test, the waterborne wood coatings with a concentration of 10.0% microcapsule had good repair ability. The possibility of applying the self-repairing technology of microcapsule to waterborne wood coatings was discussed through the preparation and performance characterization of self-repairing coatings and the results can become a guideline for the engineering application of waterborne wood coatings.

Abstract:The physical properties of microcapsules are strongly influenced by the synthetic conditions used for their preparation. To prepare microcapsules possessing a smooth surface morphology, high mechanical strength, and reduced permeability of the core material, in situ polymerization in an oil-in-water emulsion was performed using poly (urea–formaldehyde) and tetrachloroethylene as the shell and core materials, respectively. The influence of the synthetic conditions, including the initial pH value, concentration of wall material, concentration of NaCl, and heating rate, on the properties of the resulting microcapsules was investigated systematically by an orthogonal factorial design. The physical properties of the microcapsules were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and optical-photographic microscopy. The results showed that the concentration of shell material has a substantial effect on the mechanical strength of the microcapsules. Additionally, a slow heating rate and high initial pH value enhance the preparation of well-defined spherical microcapsules having excellent barrier properties. Finally, a moderate concentration of sodium chloride can remarkably improve the compactness of the capsule wall. The optimum conditions, determined on the basis of utilization of wall material, are as follows: initial pH value: 3.5; concentration of shell material: 3.6 × 10−2 g/mL; heating rate: 0.5 °C/min; and concentration of sodium chloride: 5.0 × 10−2 g/mL.

Abstract:Microcapsules with silicone oil as core and poly (urea-formaldehyde) as shell were prepared by direct in-situ polymerization process. The influences of formaldehyde-urea molar ratios on microcapsules morphologies were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The microcapsules were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), particle size analyzer, simultaneous thermal analyzer. The results showed that well dispersive microcapsules were obtained with average particle size of 2.5 μm when formaldehyde-urea molar ratio was 1.8:1.0 and that the weight ratio of silicon dioxide to microcapsule was 15.4%, which produced from pyrolysis of core material silicone oil. The prepared microcapsules were expected to a kind of high-efficiency erosion inhibitor when used in propellant.

Abstract:The urea-formaldehyde resin with microcontent of free formaldehyde was synthesized using urea,formaldehyde as raw materials and the melamine/polyhydroxy additive system as formaldehyde scavenger.The content of the free formaldehyde in the urea-formaldehyde resin enhanced and the viscosity of the resin decreased with increasing the formaldehyde/urea(F/U) molar ratio.With increasing the melamine and polyhydroxy additive respectively,the content of the free formaldehyde dropped and the viscosity increased.The content of the free formaldehyde was lower than 10 mg/kg,far below the European E1 standard,when F/U molar ratio was 1.06,the dosage of melamine was 1%,the dosage of polyhydroxy additive was 1.5%.During the synthesis process,the formaldehyde and melamine were one-off added,while urea and polyhydroxy additive were added in batches under the corresponding condition.

Abstract:In the current study, urea–formaldehyde (UF) microcapsules containing drying oils were prepared by in situ polymerization method. The surface of the prepared UF microcapsules was functionalized by using a silane-coupling agent. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), as well as atomic force microscopy observations showed that the surface roughness of the microcapsules has been promoted by the silane treating. Fourier transform infrared spectra and field-emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses showed that the silane-coupling agent molecular binds strongly to the UF microcapsules surface. The particle size analyzer results show that agglomeration of the treated microcapsules was highly reduced. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that this modification has improved thermal properties of the microcapsules. The SEM and TEM results indicated the surface roughness is increased after the functionalization treatment, and the silane molecules were attached to the surface of the UF microcapsules. According to EDXA, the weight percent of silicon was increased from 0.95 to 1.25 in the case of increasing the weight percent of the silane-coupling agent from 2 to 5 wt%. In fact, it was concluded that two major factors had influenced the UF microcapsules adhesion into the matrix, which were included as the interfacial bonds between the components and the surface roughness. The heat resistance of the microcapsules had been improved by silane-coupling agent functionalization.

Abstract:A sort of functional microcapsules, which contain a suspension responsive to electric fields, is prepared by in situ polymerization of urea and formaldehyde. The suspension is made up of pigment phthalocyanine green (PPG) and tetrachloroethylene. In order to solve the particles' separation from the suspension during the microencapsulation and to obtain microcapsules applying to electronic ink display, the dispersibility of the particles, the contact angles between the particles and the tetrachloroethylene, and the influences of different emulsifiers on the microencapsulation are investigated. It is found that the dispersion extent and lipophilicity of the PPG particles are improved due to their surface modification with octadecylamine. The contact angles between the modified PPG particles and the tetrachloroethylene increase, and the PPG particles modified with 2 wt% octadecylamine have the best affinity for tetrachloroethylene. The interfacial tension between C(2)Cl(4) and H(2)O with urea-formaldehyde prepolymer descends from 43 to 35 mN/m, which indicates that the polymer has certain surface activity. However, water-soluble emulsifiers have an important influence during the microencapsulation because they can absorb on the surfaces of internal phase and prevent the resin of urea-formaldehyde from depositing there. From the SEM images of shell surface and cross section, the microcapsules have relatively smooth surfaces and the average thickness is about 4.5 mum. When the microcapsules are prepared with agitation rates of 1000 and 600 rpm, the mean diameters of the obtained microcapsules are 11 and 155 mum, respectively. The particles in the capsules move toward positive electrode with a responsive time of several hundred milliseconds while providing an electric field.
Preparation and performance of chlorfenapyr microcapsules with a degradable polylactide-based polyurethane wall material

Abstract:To improve the utilization rate of chlorfenapyr and make the wall material of chlorfenapyr microcapsules easily degradable, polylactide diol, toluene diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol were used to prepare a chlorfenapyr microcapsule suspension by interfacial polymerization. The product was characterized by the methods of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the microcapsule particles were spherical, with an encapsulation efficiency of 84.20%. The diluted product had good wetting and spreading abilities on cabbage leaves. Compared with other commercial formulations, the slow-release effect of the microcapsule suspension was more obvious and the release mechanisms conform to Fickian diffusion, with the release rate controllable by adjusting the external pH conditions. Furthermore, the wall material of the microcapsules showed good degradation performance in a phosphate-buffered solution. Microencapsulation by this method significantly increased the validity period of chlorfenapyr and the wall material was also degraded easily.

Pesticide Microcapsules Prepared by an Interfacial Polymerization Method

Abstract:Using fenitrothion as active ingredient, an interfacial polymerization method is described for improving the preparation of microcapsule formulations. The polymerization reaction was conducted following pretreatment with excess isocyanate. The capsule walls of the resulting microcapsules were significantly better than those produced by the traditional method, with the new microcapsules holding about twice as much pesticide. High temperature stability was greatly increased. The decomposition rate was decreased from 15 to about 2%. Rate of pesticide release was substantially reduced and could be varied under different conditions. As a result, this improvement in formulation provided significantly increased residual efficacy of the pesticide, allowing reduced application rates. This article also emphasizes research on the effect of different reaction conditions on microcapsule formation, and the measurement of pesticide release from the microcapsule into water. Rate of release could be controlled and adjusted by changes in several factors, such as interfacial polymerization reaction time, microcapsule particle size, pesticide and polymer proportions in the mixture, and proportions of two aqueous phase monomers. The resulting product met the criteria needed in a microcapsule formulation.

Abstract:Melamine formaldehyde (MF) is a versatile and widely used chemical cross-linking agent in microcapsule shells for the encapsulation of oil phases in an aqueous continuum. However, it has not been possible to form MF microcapsules with water soluble actives, to achieve sustained/no release in aqueous environment. Herein, 5 types of MF based microcapsules were designed and synthesised with 4 polymers, including neutral and polar poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid), anionically charged biocompatible shellac and ion exchange resin polystyrene sulfonate as well as a superhydrophobic polymer precursor octadecyltrichlorosilane, via an in situ polymerisation method. Potassium chloride and allura red (dye, Mw = 496.42 g.mol(-1)) were used as models of inorganic and organic water soluble actives with low molar mass, respectively, to study their size distributions, encapsulation efficiencies, payloads, morphologies and release rates in aqueous environment. Preparation and Characterization of Microcapsules for Self-healing Material

Abstract:Microcapsules for self-healing material were synthesized by in-situ polymerization with urea-formaldehyde resin as the shell material and dicyclopentadiene as the core material.The formation process of microcapsules was observed by using optical microscopy(OM).The chemical structure was characterized by fourier transform infrared(FTIR).The thermal stability and particle size distribution of microcapsules were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and laser particle size analyzer.The results indicate that dicyclopentadiene is well encapsulated by urea-formaldehyde resin.The microcapsules with smooth surface and good dispersibility are prepared.The microcapsules are obtained with good chemical stability and narrow particle size distribution,and the average particle size is 10.394μm.

Versatile fabrication of nanocomposite microcapsules with controlled shell thickness and low permeability

Abstract:Novel ethyl phenylacetate (EPA)-loaded nanocomposite microcapsules with polyurea (PU) /poly (melamine formaldehyde) (PMF) shells were facilely and fabricated: by using silica nanoparticle-stabilized oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion template and subsequent interfacial reaction and in situ polymerization. SiO2 nanoparticles absorbed at the interface between oil and water to stabilize the o/w emulsions. The oil droplets containing EPA, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate-terminated poly (propylene glycol) (PPG-TDI) were subsequently reacted with MF prepolymer (pre-MF) dissolved in water phases. The interfacial reaction between pre-MF and IPDI produced interior PU walls. Meanwhile, the in situ polymerization of pre-MF generated exterior PMF walls. It was found that these in/out double walls were compact together. The resulting capsules had spherical shapes and rough exterior surfaces, and could be easily isolated, dried, and redispersed in epoxy resins. The size of the produced microcapsules was dependent on the concentration of SiO2 nanoparticles. The dynamic thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the capsules showed excellent thermal stability with little weight loss when exposed at 150 °C for 2 h. Interestingly, with a double PU/PMF shell, these capsules exhibited an extra-low permeability. Moreover, these microcapsules can also demonstrate exceelent magnetic responsiveness after introducing magnetic nanoparticles inside. We believe our microcapsules could be potential candidates in microcapsule engineering, self-healing composites, and drug-carrying systems.
