Abstract:The surface of UHMWPE fiber was treated by plasma,liquid oxidization,crone and UV grafting.The morphology and oxygen content of the fiber surface were characterized by SEM and XPS.It was found that the fiber surface became rough and the surface area was increased.The oxygen content was also enhanced after surface treatment.

Abstract:The influences of the oxidative modification, coupling treatment and dispersing agent for carbon fiber dispersion and binding properties were investigated, and the relationships of different ratio of carbon fiber with the physical strength and electrical conductivity of the paper were analyzed. Meanwhile fiber surface morphology, zeta potential and absorbance slurry were tested. The result showed that: coupling modification significantly improved the dispersion performance of carbon fiber, superior than oxidative modification, the increase of the dispersion would enhance the conductivity of carbon fiber network, the effect of CPAM was best in four kinds of surface-active agent, and 30% content of carbon fiber achieved the "percolation threshold" of conductive material.
Effect of Irradiation Grafting Epoxy on Surface Characteristics of Carbon Fibers and Mechanical Properties of Composites

Abstract:Co60 γ-ray irradiation as a novel method for modification of fiber surface was introduced in the present study. Carbon fibers with kidney-type section were treated in a solution of epoxy resin and acetone using γ-ray irradiation. The effect of irradiation grafting epoxy on characteristics of carbon fibers was analyzed by using atomic microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and impregnation performance testing. It is reveals that the fiber surface is roughened, the O/C ratio and C-O-C percentage increase rapidly and the wetting ability of fibers also improves after irradiation grafting. In addition, irradiation grafting is found to improve the adhesion at fiber/matrix interface and enhance the flexural and tensile strength of carbon fiber/phenolic composites with increasing the strength and modulus of fibers.

Abstract:The oxidized carbon fibers (OCF1 and OCF2 )were prepared via surface oxidation treatment in H 2 O2 and concentrated HNO3 ,and then modified by silane coupling agent γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570),to obtain the KH-570 grafting modified carbon fibers(KCF),which were applied to the unsaturated polyester self-healing composites.Effects of different modification agents and modification methods on the properties of car-bon fiber/unsaturated polyester composites were compared.The effect of surface modification of carbon fiber,the structure and the performance of carbon fiber/unsaturated polyester composites were characterized by FTIR,XPS and SEM.The mechanical properties of composites were measured by universal tensile testing machine,izod impact device and shore durometer.The results show that the activity of the carbon fiber's surface functional group content and roughness increases because of the oxidation and grafting reaction,thereby improving the compatibility between carbon fiber and unsaturated resin matrix.The integrated mechanical properties of OCF1/UP composites are better than OCF2/UP composites'.In the three composites,the mechanical properties and the self-healing efficiency of KCF/UP composites are best with self-healing efficiency of 67.03%.

Abstract:Study of the morphology, aggregation structure and properties ofBombyx mori silk treated by low temperature oxygen plasma showed that slight flutes appeared on the surface ofBombyx mori silk fiber and that its surface structure changed after plasma treatment. The conformation also changed and crystalline degree decreased. The stannic filling rate of treated fiber was improved. Because of etching, the weight of the fiber decreased but the breaking strength changed little after short-time treatment.

Abstract:The functionalization of HDPE through ultraviolet light irradiation and the surface energy of the irradiated sample were studied through FTIR and contact angle measurement. The results show thatCO,C—O and other oxygen containing groups were introduced onto HDPE chain during irradiation in air and O 2,and their content were increased with irradiation time .The amount of oxygen containing groups in O 2 atmosphere was much higer than that in air.After irradiating,the contact angle of HDPE with water became smaller ,the contact angle with liquid paraffin became bigger,and the surace energy increased.It show that the polar property of HDPE is improved and HDPE can be functionalized by means of ultraviolet light irradiation.

Abstract:Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber is a high-performance material with superior properties of high strength and modulus, low density, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. But the development of UHMWPE fiber reinforced polymers is hindered due to its inert inactive surface and poor interfacial adhesion with polymer matrix. This work presents the research progress on surface modification techniques, including 'dry' treatment, strong oxidant treatment, chemical grafting and coating, of UHMWPE fiber and the mechanisms of the improvement on surface properties and interfacial adhesion strength between the UHMWPE fiber and the polymer matrix. Application status of UHMWPE fiber such as aerospace, ocean engineering and individual protection is introduced.

Abstract:This study reveals the synergetic enhancement of oxygen plasma treatment on the interfacial properties and impact resistant of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites (PMCs). The UHMWPE fiber reinforcement was modified by oxygen plasma with different parameters including input power, treatment time and gas flow rate. Then, the surface physicochemical properties of modified fibers were analyzed. Oxygen plasma modified UHMWPE/vinyl ester composites exhibited an enhanced interface shear performance of 90.99%, which would significantly influence the mechanical properties of the composites. The optimal parameters were proved to be an input power range of 150–180 W, a time range of 120–150 s, and a gas flow rate of 8sccm, at which situation the tensile strength had been enhanced 10.67%, the impact-resistant damage projection area and dent depth had been reduced up to 51.93% and 24%, respectively. Simultaneously, the energy dissipation pattern dominated by fiber fracture was gradually formed in the modified composites, which maximize exploitation of the fiber-reinforcing effect and improved the impact resistance.

Abstract:Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/epoxy composites with excellent adhesive properties were prepared by forming an interface membrane on the UHMWPE fiber surface. The interface membrane of the UHMWPE fiber and epoxy resin was polymerized by an aldol condensation between polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glutaraldehyde. Different surface treatment methods of UHMWPE fibers were optimized and the two-step PVA-glutaraldehyde condensation (Corona-PG-2S) method is the best. The interfacial adhesion between UHMWPE fiber and epoxy resin was enhanced, and the adhesive properties of the composite were improved. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) results of the fiber treated by Corona-PG-2S shows that the surface oxygen content was up to 25.0 wt %, with an increase of 17.3 wt % compared with the surface oxygen content of unmodified UHMWPE fiber, which indicated that the surface polarity was greatly enhanced. The adhesive properties were improved by improving the polarity of the surface. The peel strength, ultimate cohesive force, tensile strength and flexural strength of the composite treated by Corona-PG-2S were greatly increased to 262.8%, 166.9%, 139.7%, 200.6% compared with those of unmodified samples. The composite prepared by Corona-PG-2S had excellent adhesive properties, demonstrating that the Corona-PG-2S method plays a major role in significantly improving the composite adhesive properties.

Abstract:The properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers reinforced epoxy resin composites were studied and the effects of the fiber surface treatment were investigated. The results showed that the surface treatment increased the roughness, O-containing groups (especially -OH groups), crystallinity and improved the wettability of UHMWPE fibers. The impact strength of the treated UHMWPE fibers/epoxy composites reached the maximum of 92.6 kJ/m2, which was higher than that of pure epoxy and as-received fiber composites. The tensile strength of both as-received and treated fiber composites showed lower than the pure epoxy. However, the tensile modulus was observably increased. The bending strength and modulus of the treated UHMWPE fibers/epoxy composites were 26.2 % and 26.0 %, higher than those of pure epoxy, respectively. The friction coefficients of the two types of composites were both increased. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results showed that Tg shifted toward higher temperatures and the reduction of tan δ peak of the treated UHMWPE fibers/epoxy composites indicated the adhesion of treated fiber with resin matrix was better than that of as-received fibers, which was in accord with the scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The adding of the treated UHMWPE fibers to the epoxy matrix offered a stabilizing effect against the decomposition.

Abstract:Obtaining a robust fiber/matrix interface is crucial for enhancing the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced composites. This study addresses the issue by presenting a novel physical-chemical modification method to improve the interfacial property of an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber and epoxy resin. The UHMWPE fiber was successfully grafted with polypyrrole (PPy) for the first time after a plasma treatment in an atmosphere of mixed oxygen and nitrogen. The results demonstrated that the maximum value of the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the UHMWPE fiber/epoxy reached 15.75 MPa, which was significantly enhanced by 357% compared to the pristine UHMWPE fiber. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of the UHMWPE fiber was only slightly reduced by 7.3%, which was furtherly verified by the Weibull distribution analysis. The surface morphology and structure of the PPy in-situ grown UHMWPE fibers were studied using SEM, FTIR, and contact angle measurement. The results showed that the enhancement of the interfacial performance was attributed to the increased fiber surface roughness and in-situ grown groups, which improved the surface wettability between the UHMWPE fibers and epoxy resins.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oxygen plasma treatment on the surface roughness, morphology, chemical surface structure, crystallinity and tensile properties of wool fiber yarn. The wool fibers were treated with oxygen plasma at a different treatment time. The morphological surface characterization of wool fibers was realized at sub-micro scale by means of high-resolution scandisk confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The chemical structure of untreated and plasma treated wool fiber surface was analyzed by Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry. In addition, the percentage of crystallinity and the size of the crystals were investigated using an X-ray diffractometer. The results showed that oxygen plasma treatment leads to the removal of surface lipids and oxidizes the cysteine in the exocuticle and increases the surface roughness.

Abstract:We successfully improved the interfacial adhesion strength between ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber and resin by the surface modification of UHMWPE fiber with two kinds of SiO2 nanoparticles through gel spinning process. Modified effect of treated SiO2 nanoparticles by coupling agent was superior to original SiO2 nanoparticles. Compared with unmodified fibers, pull-out tests of modified UHMWPE/treated SiO2 fibers revealed that interfacial adhesion strength increased by the maximum of 10.95%, but corresponding breaking strength decreased by 8.51%. In addition, the interfacial adhesion strength and breaking strength could continue to enhance with increasing the additive amount of treated SiO2 nanoparticles. The results of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) indicated that the crystallinity of all modified fibers decreased while crystallite dimension increased, and the surface of modified fibers by treated SiO2 nanoparticles exhibited polar functional group (C=O). The superiority of this modified technology was that it realized the bulk industrial production and maneuverability, low cost, and no pollution. POLYM. Abstract:We explore the surface properties of Teflon AF1600 films treated by oxygen plasma with various procedure parameters. Contact angle (CA) measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) are employed to investigate the wetting behavior, surface topography, and chemical composition, respectively. While the etched thickness reveals a linear relationship to the applied plasma energy, the surface presents various wetting properties and topographies depending on the plasma energy: low advancing and zero receding CA (1 kJ), super high advancing and zero receding CA (2-3 kJ), and super high advancing and high receding CA (≥4.5 kJ) for the wetting behaviors; pillar-like (≤6 kJ) and fiber-like (>6 kJ) nanoscaled structures for the topographies. The results of XPS analysis reveal slight changes in the presence of O- and F-components (<4%) after oxygen plasma treatment. Furthermore, we discuss the applicability of the Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter equations and employ the Friction-Adsorption (FA) model, where no wetting state and structure-related parameters are needed, to describe the CAs on the plasma-treated surfaces. Additionally, we conduct electrowetting experiments on the treated surfaces and find that the experimental results of the advancing CA are in good agreement with the predictions of the FA model.

Surface modification of polyimide fibers for high-performance composite by using oxygen plasma and silane coupling agent treatment

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. In this study, the oxygen plasma and silane coupling agent composite treatment was used to modify the polyimide fiber surface to improve the interfacial properties. The oxygen plasma treatment introduced active groups on the fiber surface, which facilitated the grafting of silane coupling agent to the fiber surface. The surface morphology and chemical composition of fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that after plasma treatment, the etching spots on the fiber surface increased with the plasma treatment time, and the surface O atom content, O/C ratio and C–O(H) bond ratio reached the highest value at 27 min plasma treatment. After the composite treatment, the surface Si atomic content reached the highest value after 27 min plasma pretreatment. Moreover, polyimide/polyamic acid unidirectional reinforced composites were prepared. In polyimide/polyamic acid composites, the interfacial shear strength of polyimide fibers first increased and then decreased with plasma treatment time, both in oxygen plasma treatment and in composite treatment, and increased by up to 36.98% and 61.68% respectively compared. In addition, the transverse tensile strength of polyimide/polyamic acid composites increased by 103.73% after composite treatment compared with the pristine specimens.

Abstract:Ozone treatment technique was used as a means of forming chemically active sites on Ultra-high-molecule-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) microfiltration membrane surface in this work. Then the graft polymerization of methylacrylate acid (MAA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was contacted with the active species. The surface graft polymerization of the unmodified and modified membrane was confirmed by ATR-FTIR and X-ray photospectroscopy. Surface hydrophilicity of the membrane investigated by measuring the contact angles showed a significant increase in hydrophilicity.

Abstract:Abstract This study treated the surface of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibres with plasma and optimized the parameters of plasma treatment. On this basis, UHMWPE fibre composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared, and the changes of UHMWPE fibres before and after modification in the chemical composition, surface morphology, and mechanical properties were studied. The results showed that oxygen-containing functional groups and active free radicals on the surface of plasma treated UHMWPE fibres increased. Tensile strength and modulus of UHMWPE fibre composites reinforced with CNTs increased by 16.3% and 21%.
A novel PDA/POSS transition layer on the surface of UHMWPE fibers by co-depositing to improve the mechanical properties of composites

Abstract:The surface treatment of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers is one of the key technologies for the application of UHMWPE fibers composites. In this paper, the interface transition layer of polydopamine (PDA) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) co-deposited on the surface of corona pre-treatment fiber fabric is used to the uniform and efficient distribution of loads between the fibers and the resin matrix, especially to significantly improve the flexural modulus of UHMWPE fiber fabric composites. Under 2.5 kW corona pre-treatment, 4 g/L of dopamine hydrochloride and 2 wt.% of γ-Aminopropyl triethoxysilane aqueous solution, the impact strength, flexural strength, and modulus of UH-C2.5@PDA/PA2 fiber fabric/epoxy composites are greatly improved to 218.6 kJ/m 2 , 151.7 MPa, and 7.8 GPa, respectively, which are 72 %, 106 % and 143 % higher than those of the untreated UHMWPE fiber composites. It may be attributed to: (1) the corona pre-treatment of UHMWPE fiber induces larger amount of active sites on fiber surface and higher surface energy, leading to a better wettability and adhesion with the matrix resin; (2) the mechanical interlocking engagement between the fibers and nano-POSS particles effectively prevents fibers extraction from the matrix resin and increases the friction of relative sliding; (3) POSS can strengthen the transition layer. The failure of UHMWPE fiber reinforced composites can be mainly attributed to energy absorption of matrix resin fracture, interface damage and relative sliding between matrix resin and fibers, fiber yield deformation and fiber fracture.

Abstract:In this study, air plasma and ZnO coating was used to modify ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibre (UHMWPE). The surface morphologies of the fibre with and without ZnO coating were examined under an electron scanning microscope (SEM), and the surface chemical composition was studied through X-ray spectroscopy. Moreover, the impact resistance and weight loss heat weight (TGA) of the fibre were examined. The results of this study indicated that the chemical activity of the fibre surface was enhanced due to the adsorption of O-C=O group, thus increasing the binding force between nano-ZnO coating and the fibre surface. A compact net-like nano-ZnO coating was identified on the fibre surface. The fibre pre-treated by plasma can be plated with more complete coatings, the thermal stability was enhanced by 19.7% after 120 s of treatment, and the impact resistance was significantly increased by 177% after 90 s of treatment. Abstract:The application limitations of Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber reinforced composites in different fields can be attributed to their surface chemical inertness and weak interfacial adhesion. Herein, we developed a novel method for preparation of a stable biomimetic layer surface treatment, via the combination use of physical twisting structure and "rigid-flexible" interface layer. Unlike the conventional methods under special conditions, in this method, the UHMWPE fibers were converted into twisting structure, and the efficient nanoparticle deposition facilitated on the fiber surface in the presence of reductive dopamine coating. Moreover, the multi-structured synergy promotes the roughness of the T-UHMWPE fiber, which improves the interface bonding strength of the fibers-reinforced composites. The effectiveness of the modified treatment was evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), microscopic confocal laser Raman spectrometer (Raman), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), contact angle and surface free energy. The surface morphology and interfacial properties of the treatment was evaluated using field emission scanning electron microscopes (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The experimental results demonstrated that the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the modified T-UHMWPE was improved by 218 %, compared with those of the unmodified UHWMPE fibers. This innovative approach, combining physical twisting structure and "rigid-flexible" interface layer, would provide a valuable potential for the preparation of advanced UHMWPE reenforced composites with high interfacial bond strength.

Surface modification of carbon fibers by anodic oxidation

Abstract:The surface of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers (CFs)was modified by anodic oxidation and characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. It was found that the roughness and specific surface area of the carbon fibers were increased after oxidation treatment. The contents of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups of the treated PAN-CFs were higher than those of the untreated ones. The loss tangent peak value (tanδ_ max ) of the treated carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites (CFRP) declined compared with the untreated ones, and the glass transition temperature of the epoxy resin was increased. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the CFRP can be increased by 25% under an appropriate oxidative treatment,and the loss of tensile strength was only 5%. The interfacial adhesion parameters A and α were quantitatively evaluated, and their values were consistent with the results of ILSS of CFRP.
