Abstract:Clutch micro-slip is significant in improving the performance of dual clutch transmission. Unlike with the conventional lockup control strategy, this research designs a novel controller to enable a desired micro-slip on clutch at the end of clutch engagement. Prior to the design, an extended Kalman filter is proposed to estimate the drive shaft torque based on an estimation model. The controller design is using the pole placement method based on the clutch slip dynamics; its input is calculated according to the estimated drive shaft torque, the engine torque, and the error between the actual slip and desired micro-slip, which realizes a closed-loop feedback control to ensure the control performance. The controller is validated by simulation works, and the results show that the clutch micro-slip is stable and robust.

Abstract:Clutch slip control of the inertia phase during the clutch-to-clutch shift process is the key to ensure good drive quality in automated transmissions. Addressing the problem of unpleasant driveline jerk and clutch overwear, a novel control scheme consisting of a linear quadratic controller and two compensators is proposed. The compensators are designed to deal with the challenges involving the disturbances and discontinuity in the drivetrain torque during the inertia phase. Compared to the conventional proportional–integral–derivative and classical linear quadratic approaches, the proposed control scheme demonstrates a significant better shift performance in terms of the slipping tracking error and jerk level during shift. The influences of various reference inputs and disturbances are investigated, where the proposed control scheme shows advantages. The proposed control scheme can be adaptable to various engine torque and vehicle load torque with improved control robustness.

Abstract:Micro-slip control of multi-disc clutches is effective for attenuation of vibration and smooth gearshifts in dual clutch transmission. This paper proposes a method to apply micro-slips on the clutches for gearshift process, which differs from the conventional lockup control. The vehicle powertrain is modelled as a six degrees of freedom dynamic system, including a hydraulic actuator model. Micro-slips of dual clutches are realised by a closed-loop feedback controller according to the control-oriented model. The controller is used to evaluate demands of the clutch torques and transform them to input currents for the hydraulic solenoid valves. Numerical analysis and experiment are preformed, and the results show that the effect of clutch micro-slips is significant in improving the shift smoothness and the drive comfort of the dual clutch transmission during gearshifts.

Abstract:Wet clutches are often used to transmit torque when the clutch is fully engaged. But the continuously variable torque in the engaging process can also be used to realize flexible speed control instead of controlling the original torque at the drive end of the clutch, especially when large torque is needed. Present paper establishes a short-time speed control system using a wet clutch. The whole model of the system is setup on the intelligent simulation package AMESim. A control method based on the pressure sensor and time delay is raised up to get the smooth speed curve when the phase changes in the engagement process. The principle of the hydraulic system and the control method are tested by the model and the result is good.

Abstract:A co-simulation model of whole-vehicle dynamics was established based on MATLAB/Simulink and AMESim.Also a precise dynamics model of torque converter,locking clutch and torsional coupling power transmission was developed.The Proportional-Integral-Derivative(PID)controller of the lock-up clutch was designed using torque converter pump wheel and turbine speed as slip control parameters.The MATLAB Optimization Toolbox was used to optimize the slip speed based on the evaluation of the level of torque fluctuations and transmission efficiency.Simulation results show that,when the vehicle is started with small throttle,the lock-up and slip control should not be used due to unstable condition of the engine;when the vehicle is started with medium throttle,large throttle and full throttle opening,the engine works in its best working condition because of the involvement of the lock-up clutch that actively intervenes the engine operating point.The slip and lock-up control of the lock-up clutch achieves a better allocation of power transmission and balances the relationship between the energy loss and NVH.

Abstract:The control of the vehicle transmission system is of great significance to driving comfort. In order to design a controller for smooth shifting and comfortable driving, a dynamic model of dual-clutch transmission is established in this paper. An optimal control strategy for clutch oil pressure based on linear quadratics is proposed, which is used to optimally control the oil pressure of two clutches in the torque stage and inertia stage. The control strategy selects the slipping work and jerk as evaluation indices of shift quality and establishes an optimization objective function. On the premise of optimizing the input torque, the relative speed difference between the engine and the sliding clutch in the inertia stage is adjusted. Through the optimal trajectory control of the wet clutch oil pressure, slipping work and jerk are reduced, thereby improving driving comfort. The simulation results show that the slipping work and jerk generated by the system during the shift stage are reduced, and the shift quality is improved. Additionally, compared with the controller using the MATLAB particle swarm optimization algorithm, the response speed of the proposed controller is faster, the slipping work and jerk are better reduced, and the shift quality is improved.

Abstract:A wedge clutch with a wedge ramp transfers the tangential force into an axial force. It has unique features of self-reinforcement, and can be packaged into tight spaces. This wedge clutch is developed to apply to an automatic transmission as an implementation example.The slipping decay time is found to be critical for the shifting quality. This paper focuses on the experimental study and control of slipping decay time of the wedge clutch through the influencing factors. The mechanical system of the wedge clutch applied in an automatic transmission is described and the sensors for measuring signals are installed. A transmission dynamometer is set up for experiments.The torque magnitude and direction of the motor motion are considered as actuation factors; the driveline input speed, load torque, and oil temperatures are considered as the driveline factors. The results show how influencing factors affect the slipping decay time during gear shifting.

Abstract:This paper investigates the clutch control problem for automotive transmission systems. This paper focuses on the pressure tracking control for a wet clutch, which has a much shorter stroke and asks for a more precise position and pressure regulation. The system dynamics are highly nonlinear, and the developed model includes unmodeled dynamics and parameter uncertainties. All these factors will influence the closed-loop system performance if not considered carefully during the control design, which makes the control synthesis for clutch systems challenging. Compared with the existing sliding-mode control (SMC) method, an improved method based on nonlinear sliding mode is presented in this paper to further improve the convergence rate and tracking precision of the closed-loop clutch system. This controller ensures that the pressure tracking error not only reaches the sliding manifold in finite time but converges to the equilibrium point in finite time as well. Moreover, considering the chattering phenomenon caused by high switching gains, a composite terminal SMC (TSMC) method based on uncertainty observer is proposed to reduce chattering. Using an extended state observer (ESO) technique, an uncertainty observer is designed for estimating the model uncertainties of pressure dynamics, pressure-reducing-valve flow dynamics, and estimation error of piston displacement. Then, a feedforward compensation term is combined with the terminal-sliding-mode feedback control. Thus, the composite terminal-sliding-mode controller may take smaller control gains for the whole pressure tracking procedure without sacrificing uncertainty compensation performance. Experimental results based on an xPC Target platform of the clutch system are provided to show the superiority of the proposed methods.

Abstract:Micro slip control for clutch is an innovative strategy to improve the performance of dual clutch transmission. This research designs a novel controller for vehicle launch to enable a desired micro slip on clutch at the end of clutch engagement. The micro slip controller calculates the requested clutch pressure as the input of the system based on the clutch slip dynamics, meanwhile, the switch threshold is determined by the boundary condition to initiate the micro slip control as well. The designed controller is validated by simulation works, and the results show that the clutch micro slip is stable.

Abstract:To improve the upshift quality of a DCT vehicle,the main function of each electronic control unit is defined during vehicle upshift based on the analysis of vehicle integration control,the upshift control sequence is fully analyzed for the DCT vehicle,and control method and strategy of engine torque during vehicle upshift is presented.Vehicle test results show that shift impact is reduced and clutch friction work is controlled effectively,thus validating the correctness and feasibility of this control strategy.

Accurate clutch torque control is essential in improving vehicle comfort, drivability, and fuel economy. In this article, for automatic clutch system with electro-hydraulic clutch actuator, a clutch torque control strategy with a robust predefined-time stability guarantee based on position closed-loop impedance control is proposed and evaluated. For this purpose, a general second order model of electro-hydraulic clutch actuator with a disturbance term is established. Based on this model, a reference position compensator based on force control in the outer loop and a predefined-time backstepping position controller in the inner loop are developed. In addition, to obtain the release load of the release bearing, a virtual sensor is designed, composed of an online adaptive sliding mode disturbance observer with predefined-time stability and an offline Gaussian process model of uncertain disturbance based on the Gaussian process machine learning method. Finally, simulations and experiments are completed to verify the proposed control strategy. The results show that the control strategy can realize the precise clutch torque tracking control and achieve satisfactory performance.

Abstract:The adjustments of the engaged speed and torque is key for the control of centrifugal clutchs in electric vehicles automatic transmission. The factors affecting the clutch torque characteristics were analyzed to model the contact torque on the centrifugal shoe. The models for the uniform centrifugal force on the centrifugal shoe and the contact pressure between the shoe and drum are simplified to get an analytical expression for the clutch torque β. The regulation characteristics of the clutch engage speed and the torque aboutβare analyzed for speeds of 0° to 90° for automatic transmissions for electric vehicles. A virtual clutch prototype is used to verify the clutch torque regulation characteristics. The results show that the basic characteristics of the clutch torque regulation well are reflected by theβ-model.

Abstract:Electrification technology is becoming increasingly popular in the actuation system of modern vehicles. A novel wedge-clutch-based actuation system driven by a motor is developed. The wedge clutch, which features a self-reinforcement function, can apply a large normal force on the clutch plates while requiring a small motor torque. However, the self-reinforcement feature results in a different dynamic behaviour of the vehicle driveline; therefore, careful control is needed during clutch engagement. A detailed analysis is performed to describe the different challenges of a wedge clutch in comparison with those of a conventional clutch. Based on the integrated engine and transmission control method, a new method of combined control of the motor actuation torque and the engine torque is proposed to improve the shift quality. The proposed control method is validated on a specialized transmission dynamometer by emulating the change from first-gear power to second-gear power in upshift vehicle conditions. The experimental results present how the shift quality of the wedge clutch is improved significantly by introducing the control method. Not only is the maximum transmission output torque about 25.5% smaller, but also the slipping energy is reduced by about 35.1%, which contributes to a smaller temperature rise on the clutch plates. Also, the smaller motor actuation torque has the potential to downsize the electric actuator further and to decrease its power consumption.

Abstract:A study on clutch control——the key issue in start control of dual clutch automatic transmission——is conducted in this paper.To shorten the startup period and ensure the same service life of linings in two clutches,the start control makes both clutches actuated and the 1~(st)and 2~(nd)gears of transmission start to engage at the same time;When the slip ratio of 1~(st)gear clutch lowers down to a threshold value,the 2~(nd)gear clutch starts to disengage slowly while the 1~(st)gear clutch continues working to accomplish vehicle start.Taking the intention of the driver,the speed difference between the engine and the clutches,and the difference between the actual and target engine speeds as inputs,a fuzzy controller is designed to control the engaging speed of two clutches.Simulation results show that with the control strategy,the vehicle can start up in a short time smoothly.

Abstract:Clutches are widely used in various vehicle powertrains. The engagement process of a friction clutch has three phases, i.e., open, slipping, and sticking. Transitions between different phases introduce a discontinuity to the powertrain dynamics, which has been neglected in previous research. A model referenced adaptive controller (MRAC), based on Popov hyper-stability criterion, is designed to compensate the discontinuity. MRAC adjusts the frictional torque along with the errors of the state variables compared with those of a referenced model. The designed MRAC is applied to a clutch in a bus. Simulation and experimental results under fast and slow startup cases show that MRAC can simultaneously reduce vehicle jerk and frictional dissipation when compared with the conventional controller.
