Abstract:The deep-sea environment has the characteristics of high pressure and low temperature. In addition to the extremely high requirements on the structural reliability, the ultra-high ambient pressure also has a great impact on the working characteristics of the hydraulic source. In this paper, the efficiency characteristics of a deep-sea hydraulic source are studied in the full-ocean-depth pressure range. According to the power transfer process, the efficiency of the deep-sea motor, gear pump and hydraulic circuit is analyzed. In so doing, the oil friction loss of the motor rotor, the internal leakage of the gear pump, the viscous friction loss of the hydraulic system, etc., are calculated. Then, simulating the deep-sea high-pressure environment by the pressure cylinder, the output characteristics and corresponding input power of the prototype are measured. By analyzing the experimental data, the efficiency characteristic curve of the hydraulic source prototype, changing with the ambient pressure, is obtained. The experimental and calculation results show that, with the increase of ambient pressure, the system efficiency of the hydraulic source prototype increases first and then decreases.

Abstract:Knowing the efficiency of a hydraulic turbine has important operational and financial benefits to those who operate a plant. Historical efficiency and other data on turbine performance are essential for the informed selection and use of turbines. So having such a database from different manufactures is attractive. However, at present it is almost impossible to get a universal database to reflect the turbine characteristics. This paper reviewed a set of empirical equations to replacefull database which defines the peak efficiency and shape of the efficiency curve as a function of the commissioning date for the unit, rated head, rated flow and other main design parameters. Since the design theories, methods and tools of turbines are relatively mature, and the majority of turbine manufacturers have reached a level of know how which enables them to carry out hydraulically and structurally correct units to product high-performance turbines. This paper paid more attention to the design factors, which could influence the value of the practically attainable overall turbine efficiency. To quantify the effects of these factors, this paper investigated the influence of roughness and gap clearances on the internal leakage flow rate. Testing and CFD are the most two important tools in different design stages. This paper reviewed some key ideas and issues on the efficiency research in both. At last, improvement measures based on these above mentioned design factors were provided.

Abstract:Turbine energy recovery is a process energy saving technology, and understanding turbine efficiency has important operational and economic benefits for the operator of a power plant. There are three main areas of research into turbine energy efficiency: the structural performance of the turbine itself, the configuration of the recovery device and the regulation of operating conditions. This paper summarizes recent research advances in hydraulic turbine energy efficiency improvement, focusing on the design factors that can affect the overall efficiency of a hydraulic turbine. To quantify the impact of these factors, this paper investigates the effects of surface roughness, flow rate, head and impeller speed on overall efficiency. Methods for optimizing improvements based on these design factors are reviewed, and two methods, the Box–Behnken Design method and the NSGA-II genetic algorithm, are described with practical examples to provide ideas for future research.

New Transformation Method for Complete Characteristic Curves of Reversible Pump Turbine Based on Surface Fitting

Abstract:A new transformation method with a variable of relative guide vane opening was developed to eliminate the multi-numerical values of unit discharge and unit moment and the sharply varied distances between the transformed curves. The transformed curves were fitted by the least square surface fitting, and the fitting functions of continuity were achieved. As a result, the curves can be transformed into series of continuity data, and the precision of the surface fitting can also be improved greatly, especially the modes of small opening and zero opening. The hydraulic transient modes in pumped storage plants can be computed at any opening without extra programs.

Abstract:Background Hydraulic turbines are widely employed to recover residual energy from liquid pressure in industries. A double-discharge turbine can achieve the desired effect in large-discharge and low-head operations than the single-discharge ones. Methods This paper numerically compares the working mechanisms of these two structures from three aspects: internal flow field, energy loss and load behaviors and experimentally verifies the hydraulic performance. Significant finding The results show that the maximum efficiency of a double-discharge turbine is 85.77 % and that of a single-discharge turbine is 82.6 % under large-discharge and low-head working conditions. The wall-entropy generation region of a double-discharge turbine is smaller than that of a single-discharge turbine. That is why the energy loss of a double-discharge turbine is small. Moreover, the blade load form of the double-discharge turbine is the front-load type, which can obtain more dynamic moments than the medium-load blade of the single-discharge turbine, increasing the blade work capacity. Simultaneously, the difference in load distribution affects the flow field, so that the volute of the double-discharge turbine significantly increases the flow velocity. Abstract:Numerical investigation on the turbine performance of a turbo-shaft engine is carried out under various working conditions.It shows that the numerical results agree well with the experimental measured data.To study the effects of the guide vanes,limiting streamline and topology of the internal flow fields are analyzed based on the numerical results.It is found that the overall performance of the turbine including efficiency and flow rate varies little by comparing with that in absence of the guide vanes.Optimization is then conducted finally by replacing the guide vanes with the free power turbine stator blades and optimizing the meridional flow path.The results reveal that,after optimization,the performance is improved with less weight and higher power output.

Abstract:To select the optimal blade number of Francis turbine in small hydropower station, four typical conditions are chosen to computed for full flow of turbine based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The 3-D flow field and stresses of a Francis turbine and the fluid-structure interaction are studied by model analysis. The results demonstrate that when the blades of the runner increases to 15 or decreases to 12, comprehensive performances of the turbine deteriorated. When the blades number reduces to 13, power of the turbine increased in main operating conditions. Its comprehensive performances are better than the original one, which demonstrates that properly reducing blades number based on comprehensive analysis can reach the effect of capacity increase.

Abstract:The rehabilitation projects have a huge market in China.In these projects,the flow rates of the turbines are always increased to increase the output.Since the buried parts and the rotational speed keep unchanged,the increase of flow rate will raise hydraulic loss in the whole flow path,thus may decrease the efficiency.In this paper,the hydraulic losses in spiral casing,stay vanes and guide vanes and their effects on the output and efficiency are analyzed.A method is proposed to evaluate the flow rate and guide vane opening for the refurbished turbines.As an example,the hydraulic losses in buried parts of a real case are calculated through flow simulations and the efficiency of the refurbished turbine is evaluated based on these results.Modification of the guide vane profile is suggested for higher efficiency with less flow rate increase.

Abstract:The study of rotor dynamic stability of hydraulic turbine system has become extremely important because of the increasing capacity, size, and inertia of large turbines. Crown clearance and band clearance in hydraulic turbines will influence the rotor dynamic characters of turbine shaft system. In this article, the character of the turbine shaft system under different clearance parameters is studied in order to observe how the clearance parameters influence the stability of hydraulic turbine. The relationship between the hydraulic turbine stability system and the turbine clearance structure is also analyzed. In this study, the force on the turbine rotor induced by fluid flow in clearances is described with the analytical solution of Reynolds equation obtained in the article, in which the fluid flow is considered to be incompressible and isothermal. And, the rotor dynamic character of the turbine system is calculated by NewMark direct integral method and non-linear forces obtained from Reynolds equation are implemented. Finally, principles related to the clearance parameters influencing the rotor dynamic character of turbine system are summarized.
Influence Of Guide Vane Shapes On Hydraulic Characteristics For A Shaft-Extension Tubular Pump Turbine At Turbine Mode

Abstract:Guide vanes are important components for a shaft-extension tubular pump turbine. To study the influence of guide vanes on the performance of a shaft-extension tubular pump turbine, three guide vanes with different section profiles are prepared. The steady flows through the whole passage of the shaft-extension tubular pump turbine with different guide vanes are simulated based on RNG k - epsilon turbulence model. The numerical results show that the section profile of a guide vane influences the hydraulic performance of the pump turbine. It is noted that the pump turbine with the guide vane profile having a large curvature has a broader operation range with high efficiency, and the minimal hydraulic loss among three guide vanes. Further investigation depicts that the static pressure and velocity distribution in the guide vane are relatively uniform, and there are hardly flow incidence at the leading edge and little low pressure zone near the suction side for the suitable guide vane profile.

Abstract:Abstract Prototype research of hydraulic turbine, as most important one of the three major methods in the research region, is different from theoretical analysis and model measurement. Since the operation conditions of the prototype turbine test are numerous and corresponding to reality, considering the complexity of the medium characteristics, operation parameters are difficult to predict accurately. Taking a giant Kaplan turbine as the research object., this paper is based on the results of numerical simulation and model measurement under rated conditions, combining with difference analysis between field data and others, as well as further study inside flow pattern of prototype and model Kaplan turbine. Reasonable judgment is made on various performance indicators, which provides reliable basis for the implement of hydraulic turbine by different methods and otherwise effectively guide the production practice.

Abstract:To acquire the hydraulic model and performance of small hydraulic turbine in pipeline, the hydraulic performance of hydraulic turbine with different structural parameter were tested on the experiment bench. Based on a detailed measurement, the change characteristic of the turbine output rotational speed and torque under different influencing factors were described. The influence of flow flux, pressure and stagger angle on the hydraulic performance of turbine were analyzed. The experiment results show that flow speed through the turbine is a key dynamic parameter determining the output performance of turbine, which means that the turbine can output rotational speed and the torque requested through regulating flow speed through the turbine. The results show that stagger angle is a key influencing factor on running efficiency of the turbine, and the design output rotational speed of different stagger angle turbine correspond with peak efficiency site.

Abstract:The Hydraulic turbine efficiency is traditionally calculated by the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet. But this method cannot determine the detailed energy loss distributions along the flow passage. Entropy production theory can predict and exhibit the irreversible energy loss distribution intuitively. An advanced entropy production diagnostic model (EPDM) with phase transition (EPDMS) is introduced in this study to evaluate the irreversible energy loss in cavitating flows. The EPDM method is based on homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) without interface slip velocity while EPDMS is based on two fluid model (TFM) with the consideration of slip velocity and interface forces. At operating point guide vane opening (GVO) 20.07, the relative error of EPDM for efficiency calculation is 6.87% and the relative error of EPDM is 3.05%. In EPDMS, the interaction between cavitation and entropy production rate (EPR) is defined and interface EPR (IntE) has a considerable proportion of total EPR in EPDMS. With the HEM method, the underprediction of the turbulent eddy viscosity results in the underestimation of irreversible energy loss. In essence, the intensive mass transfer process in cavitation flow induces the generation of IntE and corresponding irreversible energy loss directly.

Abstract:Low-head hydraulic power units typically have a short intake pipe or no that structure. For this reason, the upstream and downstream flows in reservoirs could influence the internal flow characteristics in the turbine, which sometimes increase the flow non-uniformity and the local hydraulic losses. Meanwhile, the efficiency estimation methods for prototype turbines still have a limitation for determining the unit discharge, which is generally predicted by using a Winter-Kennedy method. This paper proposes a hydraulic performance estimating method focusing on low-head turbine units, which is conducted by using CFD analysis and based on site test results. A bulb type turbine unit was adopted as a research object, which is operating in a low-head run-of-the-river power station. The flow behaviors in turbine were simulated based on two water levels under single unit operation, with two reservoir modeling. The simulation results agreed well with test ones for the turbine power as well as the relative discharge curve. The prototype efficiency in operation was estimated at the same time. In addition, this paper analyzed the relationship between the gross head and net head, and introduced the concept of plant hydraulic efficiency, as regards the flow interaction between the turbine unit, intake and tailrace. Comprehensive Hydraulic Improvement and Parametric Analysis of a Francis Turbine Runner

Abstract:Hydraulic turbines are usually required to operate in a wide range. The operation at off-design conditions not only reduces the unit efficiency, but also significantly deteriorates the dynamic stability of the turbines. In order to develop a turbine runner with good performances under multi operation conditions, a comprehensive hydraulic improvement has been done of a Francis turbine runner with a multipoint and multi-objective optimization design system. Compared with the initial runner, the runner generated from this method has a satisfactory improvement. In detail, unit efficiencies of the preferred runner are increased by 0.91%, 0.47% and 0.37%, respectively, under the rated head, a high head and the maximum head. The lowest pressure at blade surface is improved by 376.2 kPa under the rated head. CFD calculations are conducted to analyze the flow conditions inside of the preferred runner. In addition, runners with different main design inputs, namely blade lean, blade loading and blade meridional shape are furtherly investigated to reveal their relationship with runner’s internal flow and outer performances. In summary, this optimization system supplies satisfactory results and convincing recommendations to determine the design inputs for low-head Francis turbine runners.

Abstract:There is a strong requirement to change fossil fuels into renewable energy in recent years because of the exhausted energy resources and the terrible environment pollution. Small hydropower is one of potential energy resource existing in our living environment and yet not been widely used. Small hydro-turbine can take advantage of this potential and unused energy while it still has some disadvantages, like performing low efficiency and easy to be out of control when there are foreign materials in the water. Thus we design this contra-rotating small hydro-turbine to increase its efficiency and stability. In this paper, a new kind of design method about the blade thickness, which can keep the blockage ratio of the blade constant, is adopted. In addition, a longer and arc chamfered front hub is also designed. The new test turbine is manufactured and the performance experiment is conducted. The numerical analysis is also carried out to investigate the internal flow condition. As the experimental and numerical results shown, the high efficiency area is moved closer to the designing flow rate area, the average efficiency of the new model becomes higher. The efficiency at flow rate Q= 0.90(d) and Q= 0.9512,/is increased about 1.7% and 2.9%, reaching to 53.2%and 61.2%. The highest efficiency is increased about 0.5%, reaching to 64.7%, and it is obtained at 1.15Q(d). The separation areas and vortex after the front blade and spokes become smaller, and the internal flow condition between the front rotor and rear rotor is improved. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In order to study the influence of the change of the guide vane airfoil on the flow characteristics in the draft tube of a reversible hydraulic turbine, a reversible hydraulic turbine was used as the object of study, and the effect of the change on the flow pattern, energy loss, and pressure pulsation in the draft tube area was studied based on the SST k-ω turbulence model. The results show that under low flow conditions, the modified movable guide vane directly affects the direction and speed of water entering the draft tube, reduces the density of vortex in the draft tube area, reduces the impact on the near wall of the draft tube during the rotation of the vortex belt, and improves the stability of the unit operation. The turbulent energy comparison graph shows that the energy loss in the bent elbow section and the diffusion section of the draft tube is reduced, and the energy return coefficient of the draft tube is improved by calculating that the energy recovery level of the draft tube is improved under different operating conditions. A comparative analysis of the pressure pulsation in the draft tube area before and after the modification in combination with the development of the vortex belt shows that the modified movable guide vane effectively reduces the vibration intensity in the draft tube area and improves the stable operation threshold of the unit.

Abstract:The characteristic of Francis turbine is low head and large discharge in You Chou hydraulic power station. Because of the confinement of objective condition, the spiral case and draft tube measurement of prototype is smaller than that scaling from the model, so in design stage, analysis of the effects on turbine performance after modifying is necessary. In this paper, the spiral case, stay vane, guide vane, runner and draft tube are included in the whole flow passage physical model. Through the numerical simulation on two schemes (the first is the old design, the second one is modified), the hydraulic loss and flow behavior are abtained under the nine operating conditions. The result shows that the loss of stay vane at every point in the second scheme is higher than the first scheme, the better condition is under little discharge and low head. The loss of draft tube in the second scheme is higher than the first scheme under lower head, but the loss is smaller under high head, the better condition is little discharge and high head.

Abstract:The efficiency test is an important aspect to evaluate the capability of hydraulic turbine.It is a concerned question that whether the operating characteristic curve transformed from the integrated characteristic curve of turbine model through analogical theory can reflect the capability of hydranlic turbine exactly.This paper introduces the efficiency test research of 1~# unit of Xiaolangdi hydropower station,including the method of the parameters tested,the computer test system setted and the test analyzed.The volute pressure difference coefficient is amended by using the maximum efficiency of the operating characteristic curve provided by the hydraulic turbine manufactory.From the results after amended,it is found that when the head is 87m,the efficiency curve tested is not the same as the operating characteristic curve provided by the hydraulic turbine manufactory.In order to compare the curves of other heads,further demonstration is needed.
