Abstract:Abstract Based upon meaning holism in the philosophy of language, this article discusses issues of intercultural communication and explores the philosophical basis of cultural difference, pointing out that cultural difference does have its necessity, but can be bridged through language exchange and education under the guidance of a holistic view of language. This is so because culture essentially consists of a system of beliefs that a language user has of the world, life and society. Such being the case, this article proposes an independent, systematic and specialised curriculum for the teaching of culture so as to help students enrich their system of cultural beliefs, by virtue of questioning and speculating in an effort to find the rationale for foreign culture beliefs.

Abstract:Chinese ways of dealing with seeming contradictions result in a dialectical or compromise approach—retaining basic elements of opposing perspectives by seeking a "middle way." On the other hand, European-American ways, deriving from a lay version of Aristotelian logic, result in a differentiation model that polarizes contradictory perspectives in an effort to determine which fact or position is correct. Five empirical studies showed that dialectical thinking is a form of folk wisdom in Chinese culture: Chinese participants preferred dialectical proverbs containing seeming contradictions more than did American participants. Chinese participants also preferred dialectical resolutions to social conflicts and preferred dialectical arguments over classical Western logical arguments. Furthermore, when 2 apparently contradictory propositions were presented, American participants polarized their views, and Chinese participants were moderately accepting of both propositions. Origins of these cultural differences and their implications for human reasoning in general are discussed.

Abstract:The foreign language teaching profession is grappling with two contradictory demands. On the one hand, teachers have to prepare their students to interact with native speakers whose national language, history, geography, culture, and literature are different from their own. On the other hand, teachers have to prepare their students to enter a global economy in which national boundaries have lost the importance they once had; standard languages are permeated with English as a global language; national borders now include people who speak a variety of regional, ethnic, and immigrant languages; and the students’ interlocutors are likely to be other multilingual speakers rather than monolingual native speakers. Local efforts to come to grips with the contradictions of globalization, such as translanguaging and multilingual practices, have not addressed the fundamental institutional and epistemological tensions between teaching language as a cultural icon of national unity and teaching language as a tool of global communication. To explore these tensions, we compare the case of foreign language education in France and China, two traditionally centralized national educational systems, one in the European, the other in the Asian context, each with their strong tradition of monolingual literacy education and their historical and ideological reservations about the benefits of multilingualism and multiculturalism. Based on concrete examples taken from the teaching of Mandarin and French as foreign languages, we examine the possibility of redefining the glocal contact zone in a way that honors both universality and particularity, plurality and specificity.

Abstract:The existing literature in TESOL has revealed the multilayered, dynamic, and situated nature of teacher identity, but how language teachers construct their identities during curriculum reforms receives relatively limited attention, particularly in the context of teaching English for specific purposes (ESP). Theoretically anchored by the notion of contradiction in activity theory, this study investigates an ESP teacher's identity transformation in a Chinese university. Drawing on data from semi‐structured interviews, classroom observations, and artifacts (policy documents and course materials), the findings reveal that the participant constructed her identities including "a skiff drifting in the dark," "an optimistic warrior," and "a nonconformist" through the teaching reform mediated by the corporatized culture and accountability system in higher education. The process of identity transformation was accompanied by her identity‐driven efforts to resolve various contradictions and seek the delicate equilibrium between her agency and object‐oriented reform. The study offers practical recommendations on teacher development and curriculum reforms for both language teachers and other stakeholders (e.g., teacher educators and school leaders) in different educational contexts.

Study Abroad Research in Second Language Acquisition and International Education

Abstract:Abstract As in every conversation, negotiation for control and connection is at the heart of communication in the study abroad homestay. Finding a comfortable footing on the control-and-connection continua (i.e., closeness versus distance, and hierarchy versus equality) is both a product and a process of language learning in the homestay. Drawing on interviews of all parties and recordings of homestay interactions, we present the dialectical interplay of control and connection through analysis of conversational narratives recounted at Chinese homestay dinner tables. We recruit Wertsch’s (1998) notion of mediated action to show how stories, as cultural tools, were employed by the hosts and students to construct moral injunctions and to cultivate closeness through mutual caring ( guānxīn ), affective gratification ( qièyì ), and attentiveness ( tiēxīn ). Findings of the study challenge assumptions about homestay communication as a power struggle only and underscore the importance of teaching students to appreciate the value of interpersonal exchange in homestay settings.

Abstract:This paper explores the relations between teacher beliefs and practices about the medium of instruction from the perspective of complex dynamic systems theory. Through a functional framework of teacher classroom discourse, mixed analytical models were adopted to fully describe the close interaction and non-linear relations between teacher beliefs and practices. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews from three college teachers working in a typical research-based university in northeast China. The findings revealed the complex and dynamic relations between teacher beliefs and practices about the medium of instruction. The consistency and inconsistency between the analysis of interviews and classroom observations represented the tensions and changes between teacher beliefs and practices about the medium of instruction. The study calls for attention to the socially situated and co-evolving relations between teacher beliefs and practices and how they develop with contextual affordances, attractor states, flexible goals, and high dependence on initial conditions.

Abstract:Although dialectical thinking plays an important role in daily life, this ability among adults, including university students, is not always well developed. The present study used three experimental designs to explore efficient ways to promote university students' dialectical thinking ability. The results showed that university students' dialectical thinking ability can be improved after receiving instruction according to specific teaching practices. The debate approach was a more interesting and efficient teaching method for cultivating dialectical thinking ability than the lecture approach. These findings broaden and deepen our understanding about the development of dialectical thinking ability and suggests that debate can be used as an alternative way, in many university courses or training projects, to improve students' dialectical thinking ability.

Challenges of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages: The Perspective of Intercultural Communication

Abstract:With the increasing comprehensive national strength of China and the need for national development, the communication between China and Western English-speaking countries has been thriving. Under this trend, the field of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages has been developing rapidly, with a large number of foreign friends showing great enthusiasm for learning Chinese. The main arguments of this paper are: 1. challenges encountered in teaching Chinese as a second foreign language; 2. Reasons for Chinese intercultural communication errors; 3. strategies of teaching Chinese as a second language in intercultural communication. Therefore, to better promote communication between China and the West, spread Chinese culture, and help foreigners to understand and overcome the difficulties of learning Chinese, this essay demonstrates that Chinese language teachers should focus on cultivating the intercultural communication abilities of communicators. Through learning the basic linguistic knowledge and cultural background of both communicators, it is possible to minimize barriers in intercultural communication, and more amicable international exchanges can be facilitated.

Abstract:Background: Chinese/Mandarin language instruction to undergraduate students from non-Chinese speaking countries has become a topic of increasing interest, driven by China's influential role in global political and economic dynamics. With Mandarin being the language spoken by approximately 70% of Chinese speakers, it is not only taught within China but also in institutions around the world. While teaching any second or foreign language presents unique challenges, the specific challenges faced in Mandarin language education have not received comprehensive scrutiny, prompting the need for further investigation. Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to explore the challenges associated with teaching and learning Mandarin from the perspectives of non-native Mandarin language teachers. By adopting a qualitative (phenomenological) research approach, we aimed to uncover the multifaceted challenges that confront both educators and learners in the context of Mandarin language instruction. Methodology: The research methodology employed for this study involved the use of semi-structured interviews conducted with 15 Mandarin language teachers, who were chosen through theoretical sampling. These interviews were transcribed into text files and subsequently subjected to qualitative data analysis, which was facilitated by the use of MAQDA software. This approach allowed us to identify and categorize the various challenges and problems encountered in the teaching and learning of Mandarin. Findings: The research findings revealed a range of challenges and problems experienced in Mandarin language education. These challenges were grouped into two primary thematic categories: psycho-linguistic and educational challenges. The linguistic challenges are deeply rooted in the distinctive features of the Mandarin language, presenting obstacles that necessitate innovative teaching strategies and materials. Educational challenges extend beyond native speaker proficiency, emphasizing the requirement for a comprehensive pedagogical skill set among instructors. Implications: The implications of this research extend to various stakeholders in the field of Chinese/Mandarin language education, including policymakers, educators, curriculum designers, and learners. Understanding the linguistic, educational, and psychological challenges can inform the development of more effective teaching methods, curriculum design, and motivation-enhancing strategies, ultimately promoting a more successful and engaging Mandarin language learning experience for non-native speakers.
The Rhetorical Application of Ancient Chinese Poetry and Idiom in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Abstract:Facing the rapid development of Chinese comprehensive strength and overseas Confucius Institute, teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress needs further study of rhetoric. The spread of Chinese splendid culture needs rhetoric as a support. An excellent Chinese teacher needs more in-depth understanding of rhetoric. This article from two aspects of ancient poetry and idioms illustrates the importance of rhetoric in teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress. The main rhetorical devices are metaphor, personification, allusion, exaggeration, repeated and intertextuality, which explore the secrets and greatness of the Chinese rhetorical applications. At the same time, the paper has made some analyses and put forward some suggestions for the problems which may occur to the application of ancient poetry and idoms in the teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress.

Abstract:The paper is a brief review of three great philosophers’ tenetsand their implications on foreign language education. Based on the recurring themes, namely, Noddings “teaching with care”, Dewey’s “learning by doing” and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, the paper highlights the importance of care and love, interaction, practical opportunities and scaffolding in a foreign language classroom, and gives insights on teaching, learning and curriculum design in foreign language education. Leaners in a foreign language classroom may be more struggling with their learning, thus requiring more care and help from their teachers. These philosophies serve as guiding principles to help teachers understand the meaning of their teaching and explore the world of foreign language education.

Abstract:Using Chinese language teaching in an engineering department as an example, this paper explores how language teaching can meet the challenges of globalisation and the advancement of technology by fulfilling its educational function as described in Byram's model of intercultural communicative competence. By adapting theories and practices from counselling psychology, the proposed curriculum focuses on emotions to help learners uncover emotional barriers that arise when confronted with differences. It will support learners in raising awareness and developing their capacity to negotiate differences, leading to more effective cooperation with others. The paper discusses the use of experiential exercises in the classroom. They include those developed in Chinese language pedagogy, namely the performed culture approach and those developed in humanistic psychotherapy, such as body psychotherapy. The aim is to help learners notice their own feelings, attitudes, and behaviour as well as the otherness of the other in the classroom. This approach is powerful because it is in the here and now. It utilises movements and different senses as well as cognition. It helps uncover barriers to intercultural communication hidden under the surface by making the unconscious conscious. Reflection is a key part of this process. Learners are expected to reflect on their own thinking and feelings and to make sense of the dynamics in the classroom. Learners are expected to develop reflexivity, subjectivity and intersubjective awareness while acquiring linguistic competency and social cultural rules of use.
Negotiating Polycentric Power Dynamics in China through Digital Multimodal Composing

Abstract:Digital multimodal composing (DMC) has been receiving increasing attention in the research on English as an additional language (EAL) instruction in higher education. While this approach responds to students' changing writing practices in the digital world, it can create tension with mandated curricula and high‐stakes testing regimes that prioritize print‐based essay writing as in China. However, little research has explored the possibility of negotiating the tension and bridging DMC and print‐based writing through instructional design. This article reports an instrumental case study that investigates a university instructor's pedagogical approach of using DMC in an academic literacy classroom in China. Through qualitative inductive analysis and multimodal analysis, this study identifies five centers of polycentric power relations and explores how and why the instructor designed, implemented, and evaluated the DMC project to leverage students' digital literacy interests, meet the goals of the national English curriculum, and prepare students for the standardized tests. We argue that she served as a digital literacy broker who not only harnessed students' passion for digital communication but also fulfilled the requirements of different centers.
