Abstract:Abstract Based upon meaning holism in the philosophy of language, this article discusses issues of intercultural communication and explores the philosophical basis of cultural difference, pointing out that cultural difference does have its necessity, but can be bridged through language exchange and education under the guidance of a holistic view of language. This is so because culture essentially consists of a system of beliefs that a language user has of the world, life and society. Such being the case, this article proposes an independent, systematic and specialised curriculum for the teaching of culture so as to help students enrich their system of cultural beliefs, by virtue of questioning and speculating in an effort to find the rationale for foreign culture beliefs.

College English teachers can utilize the high-quality English resources on the internet, create information-based courses, use micro courses to share British and American film clips, establish English associations, organize English poetry recitation, drama performance, and film dubbing activities, carry out English-Chinese translation training, improve students’ cross-cultural awareness, and ensure that traditional culture takes root in college English classes.

Abstract:Foreign language education involves not only language education but also cultural education. It is the new mission of today’s foreign language education to integrate Chinese traditional culture into foreign language teaching and cultivate foreign language talents who can tell Chinese stories well and spread Chinese voice. As a basic course for English majors, English Listening and Speaking faces many challenges when it is integrated into Chinese traditional culture, such as complex teaching content, limited teaching resources, insufficient teachers’ literacy, and students’ listening and speaking difficulties. In order to solve these problems, teachers and universities should work together to sort out the connotation of Chinese traditional culture, develop audio-visual teaching materials, organize teacher training, and innovate teaching methods, so as to effectively promote the connection between Chinese traditional culture and English Listening and Speaking curriculum system.

Abstract:The inseparable relationship between language and culture indicates that culture teaching is indispensable in English teaching. The ultimate goal of culture teaching in English teaching is to cultivate learners’ cross-cultural communication skills. Cross-cultural communication is a two-way process, which requires not only knowledge of English culture but also the use of English as a medium for disseminating Chinese culture to the outside world. However, in actual English teaching, the teaching of Chinese culture is a mere formality, and the teaching effect is not obvious. Abstract:The significance of cultural awareness and the intimacy between culture and language call for the integration between Chinese traditional culture and English teaching. To know the current situation of Chinese traditional culture in high school English teaching, this thesis conducts a survey from three aspects: teachers’ ability in Chinese traditional culture, teachers’ attitude and teaching practice. The data shows that (1) in terms of teachers’ ability in Chinese traditional culture, high school English teachers have a low ability in Chinese traditional culture; (2) in terms of teachers’ attitude, teachers aware of the significance of Chinese traditional culture, but they don’t get the role that English course plays in the teaching of Chinese traditional culture;(3) in terms of teaching practice, the teaching content, textbooks, homework and assessment seldom cover Chinese traditional culture.

Abstract:In the interconnected global society today, the significance of integrating traditional Chinese culture into English grammar education cannot be overstated, but it is often ignored in the practical teaching and theoretical research. Hence, this study aims to explore this integration in regular higher education to promote ideological and political education and their intercultural competence. Research questions include how traditional Chinese culture is practically integrated into the English grammar course in regular higher education and whether this integration is effectively achieved as well as what suggestions can be proposed for the future English grammar course and research. Considering this, a practical case study in the context of Xianda College of Economics and Humanities, Shanghai International Studies University in China is employed to address these questions. Twenty-nine first-year English majors, both females and males, voluntarily participate as research subjects. The specific research methods mainly involve a two-round questionnaire survey and a one-round interview. One of the conclusion is that traditional Chinese culture can be practically integrated into the English grammar course in regular education by the the strategy of “4-R”, namely “Revise Teaching Goals and Objectives, Refine Teaching Content, Revitalize Teaching Methods and Reform Teaching Evaluation”. This study focuses on adopting Chinese ancient poetry, Chinese opera, Chinese architecture, and Chinese festival customs as the main materials for traditional Chinese culture related to grammar points in this course. Moreover, based on the participants’ feedback from the second-round questionnaire survey and one-round interview, it is effectively carried out and attains the quality goals in the overall teaching syllabus to a large extent. Another conclusion is that some suggestions from students and the teacher are provided for the future English grammar course and relevant research.

Abstract:Language Teaching Research, Ahead of Print. This article investigates the presentation strategies of cultural elements in the construction of cultural knowledge systems, comparing Yutang Lin's Kaiming English Books (KEB) and Senior High English (SHE). The study addresses the integration of Chinese culture within the framework of cultural and educational orientation, using an adapted textbook evaluation theory. This framework encompasses both internal and external evaluation methods. Internal evaluation involves a statistical analysis of Chinese cultural elements within the textbooks, while external evaluation compares the inclusion and role of these elements in the two-textbook series. The research employs content analysis and comparative analysis, alongside a survey of attitudes among 303 English teachers from 10 senior high schools in Luoyang City, China. Key findings indicate that a thoughtfully designed presentation of Chinese cultural elements enhances cultural education in English teaching. Teachers favor integrating Chinese cultural themes and digital technology within the curriculum, supporting a more cohesive approach to incorporating Chinese culture in English learning. The study highlights the need for improved textbook design and thematic content to bolster students' cognitive competence and cultural awareness.

Abstract:Although a consensus has been reached internationally on the importance of teaching home culture in foreign language education, this is still debated in China. By ignoring cultural factors, some regard English as simply a tool and believe linguistic skills to be the core of English teaching, especially in teaching English to non-English major students. Most, on the other hand, have recognized the intertwined relationship between language and culture, thus support intercultural language teaching. As Byram (1997) notes that both home culture and target culture are parts of the knowledge an “intercultural speaker” should possess. In spite of the growing emphasis that has been placed on intercultural communication competence (ICC) by policy makers in the context of “Chinese Culture Going Global Strategy”, it is neglected in practice and is still in secondary status. This phenomenon is especially widespread in integrating Chinese culture into college English courses and there are many problems and challenges in its implementing. Therefore, after discussing the rationales of involving Chinese culture in teaching college English, some suggestions are provided.

Abstract:Abstract Integrating excellent traditional Chinese culture into English teaching in colleges and universities can enable students to acquire the ability to express traditional culture in English, which is of practical significance for cultivating students’ cultural self-confidence. The article takes the excellent traditional Chinese culture as an orientation, studies the specific path of its integration into English teaching, and establishes a flipped classroom English teaching model by combining it with the SPOC teaching platform. Taking the sophomores of non-English majors at University T as an example, we chose the canonical books of excellent traditional Chinese culture as the teaching content and studied the specific effect of the integration of excellent traditional Chinese culture into English teaching in colleges and universities through the method of teaching experiment. After conducting the teaching experiment, students’ independent learning needs increased from 11.56 to 14.78, and the mean value of pre-course knowledge preview increased by 27.62%. The traditional culture awareness test score of students in class A was 48.64±5.24, which was 7.22 points higher than that of class B. The mean value of students’ attitudes and perceptions towards English teaching with excellent traditional Chinese culture was 3.974. The effective integration of excellent traditional Chinese culture and English teaching in colleges and universities can effectively promote the generation of students’ traditional cultural awareness and help to enhance students’ intercultural communication skills.

Abstract:Language is the carrier of culture, and culture can be inherited and developed through language. Chinese traditional culture has profound cultural details and important educational value. Therefore, promoting the integration of Chinese traditional culture into English teaching has become a necessary trend of educational development. The combination of Chinese traditional culture education and English teaching can not only improve students’ second language learning, but also deepen their understanding of traditional culture and evoke their love for national culture. However, there is a certain lack of traditional culture education in primary school English teaching, especially in rural areas. In order to solve the phenomenon of “Chinese Cultural Aphasia” and better help students understand and learn traditional culture, teachers can realize the effective penetration of the elements of Chinese traditional culture in rural primary school English teaching based on the multimodal perspective, thus further implementing the educational concept of cultural education.

Abstract:Chinese language has risen to become the world popular language among the foreign language learners. According to the recent data, 516 Confucius Institutes and 1076 Confucius Classroom established all over the world, with more than 100 million foreign students enrolled, especially 48 Confucius Institutes are distributing in 33 Africa countries, to provide the scope for people to learn Chinese language and culture. This paper is based on the previous experts’ call that teaching language in 21 st century needs to be involved with cultural awareness in concerning both regional and global societies, in order to enhance learners’ the fifth skill of the language learning. This paper aims to use the local culture to facilitate a reading content to promote students’ Chinese communication skills. The use of local culture contents is one of the effective ways to stimulate students’ motivation in language class. Under the guidance of Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Language and International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education , 12 units of Ethiopian cultures, landscapes, beliefs, customs, arts and festivals that were incorporated in the reading materials are identified. The demonstration samples of the model units will be shown so as to culturally value reading materials to any other Chinese language learners. This new orchestrated material will undoubtedly can encourage learners to gain a deeper understanding of their own culture and to share these insights in Chinese to any others as well as more effectively in learning a global language. Moreover, this material also can enlighten an idea to apply to some other reading contexts for Africa countries.
