Abstract:Nanocrystalline TiC was synthesized through a new reduction-carburization route by using metallic Na as the reductant, and tetrachlorotitanium (TiCl4) and carbon as Ti and C sources at 650 °C. The present route allowed for the formation of nanocrystalline TiC with fine particle sizes, narrow size distribution (8-12 nm). A possible formation mechanism for nanocrystalline TiC was proposed.

Abstract:A novel reaction of TiCl4 and NaNH2 at 450°–500°C for 12–24 h was performed for the preparation of TiN nanocrystalline powders. Powder XRD patterns indicated that the as‐synthesized powder was cubic‐phase TiN with a lattice constant a=4.225 Å. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the TiN powders consisted of uniform particles with an average diameter of 10–20 nm. The binding energies of Ti2p3/2 and N1s core levels at the position of 455.50 and 396.96 eV, respectively, were detected by X‐ray photoelectron spectra. Four peaks, related to transverse acoustic, longitudinal acoustic, second‐order acoustic, and transverse optical (TO) modes of TiN, respectively, were observed in the Raman spectra of TiN particles. A very reasonable formation mechanism of TiN nanocrystalline powders was proposed.

Abstract:Ammonia gas can be simultaneously used as a reductant and nitrogen source to prepare TiN from titania. In this work, the mechanisms on reduction and nitridation of micron–sized anatase with ammonia gas have been investigated, using both thermodynamic and experimental studies. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that reduction and nitridation of TiO2 by NH3 was feasible. Anatase will undergo different paths to form TiN, depending on the reaction temperature. Upon heating, NH3 was seen to partially decompose into N2 and H2, although the actual NH3 decomposition ratio was less than the theoretical value. The experimental results indicated that the obtained titanium nitride was non–stoichiometric (TiNxO1‐x, x≤1), as it contained a certain amount of oxygen. Based on the phase transformation and X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the reduction and nitridation routes were deduced: TiO2 reacted with NH3 to form TiNxO1‐x directly, at lower temperatures, and followed the path TiO2→TinO2n–1→TiNxO1‐x, at higher temperatures. TinO2n–1 was determined to be Ti4O7 and Ti3O5 at 1100 °C and 1200 °C, respectively. Reaction temperature and time significantly affected the oxygen and nitrogen contents in TiNxO1‐x, with the lattice parameter of roasted products gradually increasing—approaching those of pure TiN—with an increase in reaction temperature and holding time. At the same time, the content of oxygen in TiNxO1‐x decreased, and its nitrogen content correspondingly increased.

Abstract:Titaniothermic reduction of nitrides in a self-propagating way is reported here to produce TiN-based ceramic powders. In the titaniothermic reaction, where solid nitrides instead of N2 gas are used as the nitrogen source, N atoms required for the nitridation of Ti do not rely on the infiltration of N2 gas, but are in-situ supplied by the decomposition of solid nitrides, thus resulting in a higher conversion degree, more homogeneous microstructure, and smaller grain size. In contrast to the well-known aluminothermic and magnesiothermic processes with the reduction of oxides, the titaniothermic reaction involves the reduction of nitrides, which applies to more other metals besides Ti and offers a new way to synthesize nitrides other than direct nitridation of metal powders in a N2 atmosphere.

Abstract:Single crystalline titanium nitride nanowires have been successfully synthesized through a chloride-assisted carbon thermal reduction method using the active carbon, TiO2 and NaCl powders as precursors and cobalt nanoparticles as catalyst. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The TiN nanowires possess a cubic structure with typical diameter of 20-60 nm and length up to microns. The field emission property of the TiN nanowires has been characterized for the first time, which follows the conventional Fowler-Nordheim behavior and shows the low turn-on field of 7.1 V microm-1 and good emission stability, indicating the potential applications. The formation mechanism of the TiN nanowires has also been discussed.

Abstract:Titanium carbide, titanium carbonitride or titanium nitride were synthesized by a two-step carbothermic reduction method. In this method, a single-phase precursor TiCnO1-n was firstly prepared from the reaction between titanium dioxide and carbon black in argon atmosphere. Then, the precursor was used as raw materials to prepare TiN, TiCxN1-x or TiC. For the production of TiN or TiCxN1-x, the precursor was further carbothermally reduced and nitrided in nitrogen gas atmosphere. For the production of TiC, the precursor was further reduced by carbon in vacuum. In the first reduction step, it was hard to determine the precise molar ratio of TiO2:C due to the uncontrollable ratio of gaseous products CO and CO2 from TiO2 to TiCnO1-n. Whereas the second step only took place in the high temperature region and the gaseous products were thermodynamically in favor of CO. Therefore, the expected products can be obtained by precisely controlling the carbon addition after analyzing the contents of carbon and oxygen in TiCnO1-n. High purity products were prepared with good dispersivity, narrow size distribution and controllable atomic ratio of C:N. The effects of reduction temperature, reaction time, ball milling and particle sizes of raw material TiO2 were studied in detail. TiN, TiCxN1-x and TiC could be obtained under the same optimum time and temperature of 1773 K for 4 h in first step and 1873 K for 8 h in second step.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline TIN powder has been synthesized by the direct nitridation of nanocrystalline TiO2 powder. Powder XRD patterns indicated that the TiN nanocrystalline powder could be obtained by nitridation at 800 degreesC for 5 h. TEM micrographs showed that the synthesized TiN powders consisted of uniform spherical particles with an average diameter of similar to 20 nm. The effect of the nitridation temperature and holding time on the powder properties is discussed.

Abstract:TiN nanoparticles were prepared at 900–1100 °C by Ni-catalysed carbothermal reduction nitridation from sol-gel using tetrabutyl titanate, citric acid monohydrate and nickel chloride hexahydrate as starting materials. The catalytic effects of nickel on the carbothermal reduction nitridation of xerogels were investigated. Ni has a crucial promoting effect on the carbothermal reduction reaction of the xerogels and visibly enhanced carbothermal reduction and nitridation reactions. The dry gel with 5% NiCl2 was added to obtain nano-TiN at 900 °C. The transmission electron microscopy analysis and Materials Studio simulation results showed that the facilitating effect of Ni on carbothermal reduction nitridation reaction was ascribed to the provision of heterogeneous nucleation sites for amorphous titania, promoting crystallisation and adsorption of N2, resulting in its smooth dissociation into highly active N atoms and consequently enhancing the carbothermal reduction nitridation.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline titanium carbonitride, TiC0.7N0.3, has been synthesized directly by a simple reaction route of TiCl4 and C3N3C13 using sodium as the reductant at 600°C. The composition of the powders has been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Transmission electron microscopy image reveals that the average size of the obtained particles is about 30nm.

Abstract:A benzene–thermal reaction of TiCl 4 and NaN 3 at 350°–380°C was conducted for the preparation of nanocrystalline TiN. Powder X‐ray diffractometry patterns indicated that the powder was cubic‐phase TiN with a lattice constant a = 4.23656 Å. Transmission electron microscopy images showed the TiN powders consisted of uniform spherical particles with an average diameter of 50 nm. The binding energies of Ti 2 p 3/2 and N 1 s core levels at the positions of 454.85 and 397.1 eV, respectively, and the Ti:N atomic ratio of 1.08:1.00 were detected by X‐ray photoelectron spectra. A possible formation mechanism of TiN was proposed.

Abstract:Titanium nitride as a typical transition metal nitride (TMN) has attracted increasing interest for its fascinating characteristics and widespread applications. However, the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) atomically thin titanium nitride is still challenging which hinders its further research in electronic and optoelectronic fields. Here, 2D titanium nitride with a large area was prepared via in situ topochemical conversion of the titanate monolayer. The titanium nitride reveals a thickness-dependent metallic-to-semiconducting transition, where the atomically thin titanium nitride with a thickness of ∼1 nm exhibits an n-type semiconducting behavior and a highly sensitive photoresponse and displays photoswitchable resistance by repeated light irradiation. First-principles calculations confirm that the chemisorbed oxygen on the surface of the titanium nitride nanosheet depletes its electrons, while the light irradiation induced desorption of oxygen leads to increased electron doping and hence the conductance of titanium nitride. These results may allow the scalable synthesis of ultrathin TMNs and facilitate their fundamental physics research and next-generation optoelectronic applications.
Photocatalytic Activity of Nitrogen Doped Nano-titanias and Titanium Nitride towards Methylene Blue Decolouration

Abstract:The potential for synthesis nitrogen-doped TiO2 system with various nitrogen loadings was conducted by nitridating "as prepared" nano-TiO2 made by a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) process and exposing it to ammonia/argon atmosphere at range of temperatures (from 400 to 1100 degrees C). This process has proved to be simple, and nitridation reaction was easy to control. Products ranging from N-doped TiO2, and phase pure titanium nitride (TiN) were obtained at increasing heat treatment temperatures. Our results suggested that the TiN phase started forming at 800 degrees C. Pure phase TiN was obtained at 1000 degrees C after 5 h nitridation. A shift of the band gap to a lower energy and increasing absorption in the visible light region were observed with increasing calcination temperature from 400 to 700 degrees C. The results of photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) solution using simulated light irradiation suggested that at lower N-doping levels, the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 after nitrogen doping was greatly improved.

Abstract:Using anatase and flake graphite as starting material, titanium nitride was prepared by carbothermal reduction nitriding method under nitrogen gas pressure 0.05 MPa and flow rate 0.3 m(3)/h, at 1673K(1400 degrees C). The proportion of n(c) and n(TiO2) are 1.5:1,2.0:1,2.2:1 and 2.5:1. The phase composition and microstructure of titanium nitride were investigated by XRD and SEM. The results show that: titanium nitride can be prepared with anatase and flake graphite by carbothermal reduction nitriding method. When the proportion of n(c) and n(TiO2) is 2.2:1 the quantity of titanium nitride is the most. Because the reacting temperature is low and the contact area of the anatase and flake graphite is small the large grain size and uniform grain size titanium nitride can not be obtained.
