Abstract:Starch, an economical and safe carbohydrate, has been found to be not only an effective reducing agent but also a new morphology-directing agent for the synthesis of tellurium nanowires using commercial H2TeO4 precursor. The obtained tellurium nanowires are of single-crystal in nature, with an average diameter of similar to 25 mn and length up to 10 mu m. A possible synthetic mechanism involves the chain-shaped bioorganic molecule acting as a template for the one-dimensional growth of inorganic tellurium. The effects of different chain-shaped structures and concentrations of biomolecules on the nanowire morphology have been investigated and different one-dimensional structures, including thick rods, short nanowires, bunched nanowires, and assembled spikelet structures, have been fabricated. These experimental results have been found to be useful in substantiating the proposed synthetic mechanism.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials are of great interest for improving the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials. Single crystalline Bi2Te3 nanowires were prepared by aqueous chemical synthesis at 65 °C using Te as the reactant and sodium-dodecyl-benzene-sulfonate (SDBS) as the surfactant. The products obtained by parallel experiments without the addition of SDBS or using Na2TeO3 as the Te-precursor are very fine nanoparticles without nanowires. It is suggested that the directional effect of SDBS and the dissolving of the amorphous tellurium colloids would be two necessary conditions for the growth of Bi2Te3 nanowires in an aqueous chemical route.

Abstract:Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) with diameters of 1.0-1.5 nm (with similar bandgap to crystalline silicon) are highly desired for nano electronics. Up to date, the highest reported content of s-SWNTs as-grown is similar to 97%, which is still far below the daunting requirements of high-end applications. Herein, we report a feasible and green pathway to use H2O vapor to modulate the structure of the intermetallic W6Co7 nanocrystals. By using the resultant W6Co7 nanocatalysts with a high percentage of (1 0 10) planes as structural templates, we realized the direct growth of s-SWNT with the purity of similar to 99%, in which similar to 97% is (14,4) tubes (diameter 1.29 nm). H2O can also act as an environmentally friendly and facile etchant for eliminating metallic SWNTs, and the content of s-SWNTs was further improved to 99.8% and (14,4) tubes to 98.6%. High purity s-SWNTs with even bandgap determined by their uniform structure can be used for the exquisite applications in different fields.

Abstract:A convenient solvothermal reduction pathway to Bi2Te3, Bi4Te3 and Bi2Se3 nanocrystals has been developed by the reactions between bismuth nitrate and tellurium in various solvents in the presence of hydrazine hydrate or white phosphorus as reducing agent. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The influence of solvents and temperature on the reactions was investigated.

Abstract:Recently, the biomolecule-assisted synthesis method has been a new and promising focus in the preparation of various nanomaterials. But current works mainly focus on the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and nanowires using macro-biomolecules (e.g. virus, protein and DNA) as templates in the presence of a reducing agent. Beta-carotene, one of the most common bio-antioxidants, can be oxidized to form species with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic ends, which can provide an in situ soft template for the synthesis of nanomaterials. Herein, a simple beta-carotene-assisted method was developed for the first time to synthesize t-Se nanowires and nanoribbons with high crystallinity. We demonstrate that beta-carotene serves as not only the reducing agent, but also an in situ template in the preparation of Se one-dimensional nanostructures. It is found that the growth mechanism of Se nanomaterials is different from the familiar sphere–wire process. A novel flake-cracking mechanism is proposed. By this biomolecule-assisted route, Te one-dimensional nanostructures and Pd nanowires were also fabricated. The assisted-biomolecule in our method may be spread to carotenoids and other antioxidants, and thus broaden the application fields of biomolecules. Our preliminary investigations have shown that the facile, solution-phase biomolecule-assisted method can be potentially extended to the preparation of other low-dimensional nanostructures. The synthesized t-Se nanowires and nanoribbons may serve as templates to generate other tubular functional nanomaterials and find applications in the studies of structure–property relationships as well as in the fabrication of nanoscale optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The adsorption of the organic donor molecules tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE) and cobaltocene (CoCp(2)) on high-pressure CO decomposition (HiPco) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is investigated using density functional theory (DFT), optical absorption, and Raman spectra methods. The selective reduction of SWNTs according to the electronic type and diameter of SWNTs is revealed. The reduction rate decreases in the order: metallic SWNTs >or= large-diameter semiconducting SWNTs > small-diameter semiconducting SWNTs.

Abstract:One-dimensional tellurium nanostructures can exhibit distinct electronic properties from those seen in bulk Te. The electronic properties of nanostructured Te are highly dependent on their morphology, and thus controlled synthesis processes are required. Here, highly crystalline tellurium nanowires were produced via physical vapour deposition. We used growth temperature, heating rate, flow of the carrier gas, and growth time to control the degree of supersaturation in the region where Te nanostructures are grown. The latter leads to a control in the nucleation and morphology of Te nanostructures. We observed that Te nanowires grow via the vapour-solid mechanism where a Te particle acts as a seed. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction studies revealed that Te nanowires have a trigonal crystal structure and grow along the (0001) direction. Their diameter can be tuned from 26 to 200 nm with lengths from 8.5 to 22 μm, where the highest aspect ratio of 327 was obtained for wires measuring 26 nm in diameter and 8.5 μm in length. We investigated the use of bismuth as an additive to reduce the formation of tellurium oxides, and we discuss the effect of other growth parameters.

Abstract:Bi2Te3 nanocrystals with various shapes such as sheet, rag, sheet-rod and rod shapes were synthesized via a solvothermal process based on the reaction between BiCl3 and Te in N,N-dimethylformamide at 100–180 °C at the present of organic addition and/or reducing agent. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). KBH4 was used as a reducing agent. Organic additive plays a key role in the formation of the lamellar structures. A possible formation mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:We have prepared functional TiO2@CdS core/sheath heterostructure nanowires using a simple chemical reduction method at room temperature. The core/sheath nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-visible spectroscopic techniques. It was found that the thickness of the CdS sheath could be controlled by the concentration of the precursors. The continuous and polycrystalline CdS outer layer could be formed on the TiO2 nanowires when the concentration of the S precursor was higher than 0.2 mmol. A possible multi-site growth mechanism of the formation of the composite nanowires was proposed.

Abstract:Single-crystalline tellurium nanorods were synthesized through the reduction of Na2TeO4 by hydrazine monohydrate, in the absence of surfactants, in an aqueous ammonia solution at room temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were used to characterize the composition and morphology of the products. The concentration of the OH− ion has a significant influence on the morphology of the products and is found to be responsible for tailoring the crystal growth dynamically: the concentration of Te blocking in the solution is reduced via increasing the concentration of the OH− ion, and subsequently the nucleation rate of Te is suppressed and Te nanorods gradually grow because of the inherently anisotropic structure of Te. New generation tellurium atoms add to the surface of the particles during the long period of reaction.

Abstract:The incorporation of impurities during the chemical synthesis of nanomaterials is usually uncontrolled and rarely reported because of the formidable challenge that constitutes measuring trace amounts of often light elements with sub nanometre spatial resolution. Yet these foreign elements influence functional properties, by e.g. doping. Here we demonstrate how the synthesis and partial reduction reaction on hollow TiO2 nanowires leads to the introduction of parts-per-millions of boron, sodium, and nitrogen from the reduction reaction with sodium borohydride at the surface of the TiO2 nanowire. This doping explains the presence of oxygen vacancies at the surface that enhance the activity. Our results obtained on model metal-oxide nanomaterials shed light on the general process leading to the uncontrolled incorporation of trace impurities that can have a dramatic effect on their potential use in energy-harvesting applications.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline TiC was synthesized through a new reduction-carburization route by using metallic Na as the reductant, and tetrachlorotitanium (TiCl4) and carbon as Ti and C sources at 650 °C. The present route allowed for the formation of nanocrystalline TiC with fine particle sizes, narrow size distribution (8-12 nm). A possible formation mechanism for nanocrystalline TiC was proposed.

Abstract:Large-scale synthesis of self-aligned single-crystalline tellurium nanotubes was achieved using a simple polyol reduction method with sodium tellurite (Na2TeO3) as the tellurium source and ethylene glycol (EG) as both a solvent and a reducing agent in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) as surfactants. The individual tellurium nanotubes exhibited well-aligned morphologies with diameters of 150–250 nm, lengths of 5–8 μm and wall thicknesses of 70–80 nm. The formation of these nanotubes with different dimensional structures and morphologies was found to be strongly dependent on the concentration of surfactants. In particular, the presence of Na2S2O3 was found to play a crucial role in achieving a uniform aligned morphology of the final tellurium product. The nanotubes preferentially self-aligned along the c-axis direction and gradually formed well-aligned nanotubes with hexagonal prism structures.

Abstract:Ultrathin semiconductor nanowires as ideal nanoscale building blocks have gained much research attention. However, the macroscopic-scale synthesis of high quality nanowires remains a challenge in the field of nanowire science and technology. Here, we demonstrate the first sub-kilogram-scale synthesis of ultrathin tellurium nanowires (TeNWs) by a one-pot scale-up hydrothermal process. As much as 150 g of uniform TeNWs with diameters of 7-9 nm and lengths of several micrometers can be synthesized. The ultra-large-scale synthesized TeNWs also can be used as a versatile template to prepare a family of high quality metal telluride nanowires in large quantities because of their high chemical reactivity and excellent dispersibility in various solvents. This research sheds light on the possibility of ultra-large-scale synthesis of high quality nanowires in the future, which is of crucial significance from the viewpoint of practical applications of functional inorganic nanowires.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our work on the synthesis and characterization of one-dimensional (1D) nanorods/nanowires and assemblies of inorganic materials with the assistance of several biomolecules under conventional- or microwave-hydrothermal conditions. Two classes of biomolecules have been investigated. One is sugars and their derivatives, and the other is amino acids and their polymers, peptide, and protein. With the assistance of sugars or their derivatives, different kinds of 1D elemental tellurium (Te) and selenium (Se) nanostructures with different sizes and morphologies have been obtained. With the assistance of amino acids or their polymers, 1D semiconductor sulfides and oxide nanowires and assemblies have been successfully synthesized. By providing confined spaces or serving as functional templates for site-specific nanomaterials nucleation or binding, biomolecules appear to direct the growth and/or the assembly of the nanomaterials.
