Powder X-ray diffractometry patterns indicated that pure cubic-phase CrN powder could be obtained by nitridation at 800degreesC for 8 h. Abstract:Nanocrystalline CrN was synthesized from ammonolysis of CrCl3. The structure and morphology of the products were investigated by XRD, TEM and SAED. The influence of temperature and time on size of particles was also studied by XRD, TEM, SAED. Elemental analysis was carried out to establish the Cr:N atomic ratio of 1.04:1. XPS results further revealed that pure phase were obtained with the Cr:N atomic ratio of 1.05:1.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) nanostructured materials, chromium nitride (CrN) nanorods have been prepared initially via a direct thermal solid-state reaction of anhydrous chromium(III) tetrachloride (CrCl3) and sodium azide (NaN3) at a temperature of 600°C for 12h. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the product is indexed as cubic CrN. Transmission electron microscope images indicate that the sample consists of CrN nanorods with the diameters of 40–60nm and lengths in the range of 500nm to 1μm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show the mole ratio of Cr:N as 1.15:1. The possible reaction mechanism is also discussed.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline TIN powder has been synthesized by the direct nitridation of nanocrystalline TiO2 powder. Powder XRD patterns indicated that the TiN nanocrystalline powder could be obtained by nitridation at 800 degreesC for 5 h. TEM micrographs showed that the synthesized TiN powders consisted of uniform spherical particles with an average diameter of similar to 20 nm. The effect of the nitridation temperature and holding time on the powder properties is discussed.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline chromium nitride (CrN) particles were prepared by the pyrolysis of Cr[OC(NH2)2]6Cl3 coordination compound in ammonia gas. The compound was characterized by infrared spectrum analysis and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate the phase and morphology of the CrN powders. The CrN particle size obtained at 600°C was as small as 7nm. The influence of reaction temperature and time on particle sizes was also studied. The formation of CrN nanoparticles was proposed following nucleation and growth mechanism on the basis of the experimental results.

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.

Abstract:By controlling the supersaturation, cubic CrN with novel dendritic and bundle-like nanostructures was synthesized via the solvent-free reaction of CrCl 3 and NaNH 2 at 250°C. On the basis of the characterization of the obtained products by XRD, XPS, TEM, HRTEM, and FESEM, the possible formation mechanism of CrN with different nanostructures is proposed here.

Abstract:Interstitial titanium‐chromium oxynitrides in the solid solution series Ti1−zCrz(OxNy) (z= 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8) have been obtained by ammonolysis of the TiO2/Cr2O3 precursors resulting from the coprecipitation method. The precursors and the resulting oxynitrides were characterized by auger electron spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction analysis, electron probe microanalysis, transmission electron microscopy, and BET surface area techniques. Compounds in the Ti1−zCrz(OxNy) series are prepared as single phases by nitridation at 1073 K for 8 h. The as‐synthesized oxynitride powders contain only Ti1−zCrz(OxNy) with cubic structure and the particle size is in the nanometer scale.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline chromium disilicide was synthesized by co-reducing anhydrous chromium trichloride and sodium fluorosilicate with metallic potassium at 650°C in an autoclave. X-ray powder diffraction pattern indicated that the product was hexagonal CrSi2. Transmission electron microscope images showed that the sample consisted of particles with the diameters of 20–50nm and an average diameter of about 35nm. TGA and DTA indicated that the oxidation of CrSi2 began to proceed at 700°C in air, and only about 8.6wt.% of the sample was oxidized in the surfaces of the particles below 1000°C. It had high thermal oxidation stability due to the formed protective layer.

Abstract:Chromium mononitride (CrN) exhibits interesting magnetic, structural, and electronic properties for technological applications. Experimental reports on these properties are often inconsistent owing to differences in the degree of nonstoichiometry in CrN(x). To date, the preparation of bulk and stoichiometric CrN has been challenging; most products are in the form of a thin film produced by non-equilibrium processes, and are often nonstoichiometric and poorly crystallized. In this work, we formulated a solid-state ion-exchange route for the synthesis of CrN under high pressure. The final CrN product is phase-pure, stoichiometric, and well-crystallized in the bulk form. Near-stoichiometric and well-crystallized CrN can be synthesized using the same route at atmospheric pressure, making massive and industrial-scale production technologically feasible. The successful synthesis of stoichiometric and bulk CrN is expected to open new opportunities in diverse areas of fundamental research.

Abstract:Chromium silicide (Cr3Si) nanorods were successfully synthesized using anhydrous chromium trichloride and silicon tetrachloride as starting materials via a co-reduction route at 600°C in an autoclave. X-ray powder diffraction pattern indicated that the product was cubic Cr3Si (a=4.555Å). Transmission electron microscope images indicated that the sample consisted of single-crystalline nanorods with a diameter of 40–80nm, an average length of about 600nm and a maximum length of about 1.0μm. The oxidation of Cr3Si began to proceed at the temperature of 650°C in air, but the product had a high thermal oxidation stability below 1000°C due to the formed protective layer.

Abstract:Chromium carbides were synthesized by direct electrolysis of non-sintering Cr2O3/C precursors in CaCl2 molten at 1123K. A series of electrolysis experiments were conducted with different Cr2O3/C molar ratios, cell voltages and electrolysis time. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) techniques, respectively. The results showed that the single-phase Cr7C3 powders with a mean diameter of <200nm were prepared after electrolysis at 2.8V for 5h in 1123K CaCl2 melt. By prolonging the electrolysis time to 10h, the product was converted into a Cr7C3 and Cr3C2 composite. Carbon was not only used as a raw material, but could also accelerate the rate of electrochemical reduction of Cr2O3. The reaction procedure forming the chromium carbides involved the electro-deoxidation of Cr2O3 and combined with carbon simultaneously.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline chromium boride (CrB) powders were successfully synthesized at 600 °C through a solid-state reaction. The synthesis was carried out in an autoclave by using CrCl3, Mg and MgB2 as the reactants. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern indicates the formation of orthorhombic CrB. Transmission electron microscopy image shows that typical CrB crystallites are composed of floss-like particles with less than 10 nm in diameter and about 50–100 nm in length. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the oxidation resistance for nanocrystalline CrB is much lower than that of bulk CrB.
