Abstract:Two new guaiane-type sesquiterpene lactones, cynarinins A (1) and B (2), together with seven known compounds, cynarascoloside C (3), cynaropicrin (4), aguerin B (5), grosheimin (6), dehydrocynaropicrin (7), aguerin A (8) and cynartriol (9), were isolated from aerial part of Cynara scolymus. The structures of new compounds were elucidated by means of 1D NMR, 2D NMR and HRMS spectral analysis. Cynaropicrin (4) and grosheimin (6) showed weak cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cancer cell line, and other compounds had no obvious activity against the same cell line.

Abstract:Two new 9,10-seco-cycloartanes, named sphaerophyside SC (1) and sphaerophyside SD (2), together with four known compounds (3-6), were obtained from the ethanol extract of the seeds of Sphaerophysa salsula. The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectral and chemical evidences. Compounds 3-6 were isolated from the plant for the first time.

Abstract:Three pairs of enantiomeric sesquiterpenoids, (-/+)-syringanoid A (1a and 1b) and (+/-)-pinnatanoids A (2a and 2b) and B (3a and 3b), that represent an unprecedented 5/4/6 tricyclic backbone and a rare 6/7 bicyclic backbone, respectively, were isolated from the peeled stems of Syringa pinnatifolia. The structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, a modified Mosher's method, and quantum chemical calculations. A plausible biotransformation pathway for 1-3 was proposed, and their cardiomyocyte-protective and anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated.

Abstract:The plant species, Sonchus wightianus DC., was historically used in China for both medicinal and dietary uses. In present study, seven new guaiane sesquiterpenoids (1–7) and one cytochalasin (8), along with five known guaianes (9–13) and two known cytochalasins (14 and 15), were isolated from the whole plants of S. wightianus. These guaianes showed structural variations in the substituents at C‐8 and/or C‐15, and compounds 6 and 7 are two sesquiterpenoid glycoside derivatives. Their structures were determined by extensive analysis of spectroscopic, electronic circular dichroism, and X‐ray diffraction data, and chemical method. Biological tests revealed that compounds 5 and 8 are potent and selective immunosuppressive reagents.

Abstract:Chemical investigation of the roots of Chloranthus japonicus Sieb . has resulted in the isolation and characterization of four new eudesmane‐type sesquiterpenes including two new sesquiterpene cinnamates, along with one new and two known sesquiterpene dimers. Their structures were established by spectroscopic means and by comparison with the respective literature values.

Abstract:A phytochemical investigation on the aerial parts of Artemisia giraldii var.longipedunculata led to the isolation of 10 known sesquiterpenes,including 12-hydroxy-a-cyperone (1),1β,6a-dihydroxyeudesma-4(15)-ene (2),carainterol A (3),oplodiol (4),douglanin (5),1α-hydroxyisodauc-4-en-15-al (6),3α,6α-dihydroxybisabola-4,10-diene (7),4a,5β-dihydroxybisabola-2,10-diene (8),opposit-4(15)-ene-1β,7-diol (9),and saniculamoid D (10),respectively.Their structures were elucidated by analysis of the MS and NMR spectroscopic data and comparison with the literature.All the isolates were obtained from A.giraldii var.longipedunculata for the first time,and five of them were obtained from the genus Artemisia for the first time.Additionally,the 13C NMR data of 1 were fully assigned based on the 2D NMR data for the first time.

Abstract:A continued phytochemical investigation guided by 1H NMR and LC-MS data on the ethanol extract from the peeled stems of Syringa pinnatifolia Hemsl. led to the isolation of 16 undescribed dimeric eremophilane sesquiterpenoids, namely syringenes R-Z (1-9) and A1-G1 (10-16). These structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectroscopic data, including HRESIMS, NMR, quantum-mechanics-based computational analysis of NMR chemical shifts, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and a concise rule for determination of relative configuration of angular methyl was proposed. The results of the cardioprotective assay demonstrated that 3 exhibits a protective effect against hypoxia-induced injuries in H9c2 cells. This effect was observed at a concentration of 10 mu M, with a protective rate of 28.43 +/- 11.80%.

Abstract:A phytochemical investigation guided by H-1 NMR and LC-MS data on the ethanol extract of Syringa pinnatifolia stems led to the isolation of 11 new dimeric eremophilane sesquiterpenoids, namely, syringenes A-K (1-11) and one known analog (12, syringene L). These structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectroscopic data, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and computational methods. Biological assays revealed that 1-12 exhibited different degrees of anti-inflammatory effects, and 5 and 6 showed significant cytotoxicity against human hepatoma HepG2 cells with IC50 values of 12.3 and 12.9 mu M, respectively. Furthermore, flow cytometry assays and western blot analysis revealed that 5 and 6 promoted the apoptosis of HepG2 cells by activating ERK. Finally, the molecular docking analysis implied that the carbonyl and hydroxy groups at the C-11/C-6' of 5 and 6 had a good binding affinity with ERK.

Abstract:Five new sesquiterpenoids named acasenterpene A-E (1–5) were isolated from the fruits of Acanthopanax senticosus. The structures of all compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic data analyses (1D, 2D NMR, and HR-ESI-MS) combined with physico-chemical analysis methods (enzyme hydrolysis, optical rotation, and CD). The cytotoxicity of all compounds in vitro against four human cancer cell lines (MGC-803, Ishikawa, LN-229 and SMMC-7721) were evaluated by CCK-8 assay.

Abstract:Sesquiterpenes, one type of the representative constituents for compositae plants, have been the phytochemical research focus for last decades, because of their structural and biological diversity. In recent years, systematic phytochemical investigations on five Compositae medicinal plants from Gansu and Yunnan provinces of western China, Laggera pterodonta DC. Benth. Laggera alata D. Don Sch-Bip. ex Oliv., Senecio tsoongianus Ling., Senecio saluenensis and Ligularia veitchiana (Hemsl.) Greenm were carried out and nearly 100 eudesmane and eremophilane derivatives were isolated and structurally elucidated. 56 eudesmanoids were obtained from the two species of Laggera genus, likewise 36 eremophilanoids were isolated from the Ligularia and Senecio plants of the tribe Senecioneae. Some of these sesquiterpenoids showed remarkable antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antiviral activities.
