Abstract:The journal Energy Economics, a leading international peer-reviewed outlet for economic theory in the energy sector, celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2024. This article uses a bibliometric approach to present a retrospective of the journal's contributions. The study includes all publications from the journal based on data from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The resulting sample comprises 6,563 documents covering the period from 1979 to April 2024. The annual publication rate increased by 1.02 percent, with an average of 40.07 citations per document. Institutions from the United States of America and China lead in the number of articles published in the journal. A co-occurrence analysis of keywords was conducted, complemented by a sub-sample analysis, to provide a detailed view of thematic development and evolution over time. Finally, the article highlights future thematic trends of the journal, offering insights for editorial guidelines and interested authors.

Abstract:Fossil energy supports the development of human society but is facing depletion because of industrialization. In order to solve the formidable problem in compatibility and coordination between energy utilization and the environment and accelerate the development of sustainable energy, it is pressing to realize the transition from fossil to sustainable energy as soon as possible to solve common challenges in human development. Energy technology revolution will bring new opportunities and challenges in the development of the engineering thermophysics discipline. According to urgent needs for energy, power and environmental issues and new progress in discipline development, the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics is aiming for constructing a sustainable energy system and carrying out strategic research on the development of an energy paradigm and frontier growth point of the engineering thermophysics discipline in China. The new integrated development paradigm of energy, resources, and environment provides a promising support for the realization of a sustainable energy strategy. Key objectives of the new development paradigm is to open up new channels of sustainable energy, carry out an energy diversification strategy, and try to solve the formidable problems in compatibility and coordination between energy utilization and the environment, including clean utilization of traditional fossil energy sources, development of green energy, and integration of energy resources into the environment. Important research directions for future development in the engineering thermophysics discipline include: thermophysical properties of an environment friendly working medium; modern analysis methods for new energy sources; combustion under extreme conditions; theories and methods for efficient, clean, and low carbon conversion of fuels; efficient conversion and utilization of solar energy; regional, intelligent, and diversified utilization of wind energy; new methods and mechanisms for efficient and low-cost utilization of biomass; comprehensive cascade utilization of chemical and physical energy sources of fuels; distributed energy system with multiple energy source complementation and its optimization integration theory; energy consumption minimization principle on CO2 capture based on comprehensive cascade utilization of energy; and novel high-efficiency energy storage method based on entropy principle.

Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China

Abstract:Energy and associated environmental problems are now the central focus of mankind. These problems are extremely serious and urgent, because global climate change will not wait for a long time. The problems should be solved in a limited time-frame of less than 50 years. Human-induced climate change could overshadow all our efforts to cure diseases, reduce poverty, prevent warfare and preserve biodiversity. China, because of its huge population, energy consumption and related environmental pollution have a significant share in global climate change. Furthermore, the percentage of coal, as the most important primary energy in China, will remain more than 60% in the coming 40-50 years. Under this situation, innovative technology, new strategic ideas and new approaches are the key for solving the energy/environment problem in the country. There are no existing examples in the world for copying, therefore, China should take the unavoidable responsibility, and in some sense, to lead the sustainable (or so called “Low Carbon”) energy systems world wide. “Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China” at present is the only English-language academic journal dedicated to energy in China. Our ambition is to develop this journal into a unique platform for reporting the most advanced research on energy science and strategic thinking in the country. Obviously, energy/environment problems could be solved only with system approaches, so the scope of the journal is broadened in comparison with “traditional” frontiers. It covers energy fundamental science, energy technology (power generation, renewables, transport, building energy conservation and integration of different energy systems), energy and environment (pollution control, energy efficiency in narrow and comprehensive sense, climate change, carbon capture, utilization and storage CCS), and energy economics and policy. Since the publication of the first issue of “Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China” two years ago, the journal has been warmly met by domestic and international readers. In order to raise the academic level of the journal, we have invited more famous international scholars and experts to join the editorial board, and decided to shift from selected published articles to original submission in English. We heartily hope our journal will be a new nexus for information exchange in the fields of energy and power engineering.

Abstract:Huge and ever-increasing energy consumption and consequent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions pose unprecedented challenges to the sustainable development of the international human society. Our existing energy systems, where primary energy is converted to all sorts of final energy services, remain the major contributor to these global energy and environmental challenges. It is becoming a consensus that the conventional energy conversion and utilization mode should make place for a more sustainable one with higher energy conversion efficiency, lower air pollutions and GHG emissions, less dependence on fossil fuels, and more utilization of renewable energy. However, although there exist many technical options and technology pathways to enable this transition, they are usually treated separately by their very own technical communities and political groups without coordination with others, and the overall effect and potential is therefore greatly constrained as compared to a systematic approach where all alternatives are taken into consideration in an integrated way. Energy systems engineering provides a methodological modeling and optimization framework to address the complex energy and environmental problems existed in design and operation of energy systems in an integrated manner. This methodological framework is generic, and it can help to produce optimal design and operational plans for energy systems ranging from nanoscale, microscale, mesoscale, to mega-scale levels over operating horizons from milliseconds to months and years. This Article first gives a brief overview of typical methodologies of energy systems engineering, comprising superstructure based modeling, mixed-integer linear and nonlinear programming, multiobjective optimization, optimization under uncertainty, and life-cycle assessment. The concept of energy systems engineering and these methodologies are further illustrated via their applications in some typical real-life energy systems of very different nature and scale, ranging from polygeneration energy systems, hydrogen infrastructure planning, energy systems in commercial buildings, and biofuel supply chains.

Abstract:Sustainable Development (SD) has been a key theme of the contemporary world development in recent decades. The Journal of Cleaner Production (JCLP), as an international, multi-disciplinary journal, has provided a platform for the exchange of concepts, policies, and technologies to help societies to make progress towards sustainability. This article characterized the articles published in the JCLP in the context of low or no-fossil carbon transformations by employing bibliometric techniques. The analyses revealed that 4919 articles were published in JCLP in the first twenty-two years of publication, between 1993 and 2015 and that the pace of publishing increased rapidly during the last five years. Authors from China were responsible for publishing the largest number of articles and they have played key roles in the collaboration networks among the twenty countries, whose authors published the majority of JCLP’s articles Additionally, authors from Europe and the United States had strong international collaborative publication records. At the institutional level, the University of Tennessee was the university with the largest number of articles (79) and was central to the JCLP’s collaborative networking processes. By investigating the co-occurrences of keywords, some topic clusters for low-fossil carbon transformations and their distributions were identified, which were like the analyses of the research fields and trends of articles published in the JCLP. The category with the largest number of JCLP articles was the ecology/environmentally-related research with 2215 articles, followed by industrial sectors with 2215 articles, resource/energy-related research with 1905 articles, and methodology & methods with 1033 articles. The specific topical clusters under each research field were introduced and analyzed. Overall, the authors of this article anticipate that the JCLP will continue to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, multi-generational communications for academics, educators, researchers, enterprise leaders and policy-makers with the vision and mission to help to accelerate the transitions to equitable, sustainable, livable post-fossil carbon societies.

Abstract:Ever-increasing energy demands pose huge environmental challenges globally. The strategies and methods that are chosen to address the energy crisis will, in part, determine the possibility of fulfilling the 1.5-degree global warming target set by the Paris Agreement, and of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals, two vital and ambitious objectives for humans in the coming decades. While numerous inventory and modelling approaches have been developed to evaluate direct and indirect energy requirements at multiple scales from industries to cities and to the global economy, a discussion on their implications for environmental sustainability is long overdue. In this study, we provide an overview of the research paradigm and the important approaches that have been developed to address energy sustainability and review the papers included in this Special Issue, which are representative of some of the major advancements in energy, carbon, and other hybrid footprint approaches. This Special Issue aims to gather and harmonize state-of-the-art energy accounting frameworks, models, and metrics that benefit the promotion of global sustainability.

Abstract:This article summarizes the thinking behind the call for a revolution/an evolution in China's energy production and consumption. China is still a developing country, though it has experienced fast economic growth in the past thirty years. It achieved great accomplishments surprising the world, and it is also confronted with challenges on energy supply and environmental protection. As environmental pollution becomes more and more serious, the energy challenges have become more and more complicated. With this in mind, the authors analyzed China's energy situation, China's energy supply and consumption, the world energy map, China's commitment both to improving its domestic environment and fulfilling its international obligations to control climate change. Action plans are presented to support the call for a revolution/an evolution in China's energy production and consumption as an effective assurance for China's ambitious goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
