Abstract:Ever-increasing energy demands pose huge environmental challenges globally. The strategies and methods that are chosen to address the energy crisis will, in part, determine the possibility of fulfilling the 1.5-degree global warming target set by the Paris Agreement, and of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals, two vital and ambitious objectives for humans in the coming decades. While numerous inventory and modelling approaches have been developed to evaluate direct and indirect energy requirements at multiple scales from industries to cities and to the global economy, a discussion on their implications for environmental sustainability is long overdue. In this study, we provide an overview of the research paradigm and the important approaches that have been developed to address energy sustainability and review the papers included in this Special Issue, which are representative of some of the major advancements in energy, carbon, and other hybrid footprint approaches. This Special Issue aims to gather and harmonize state-of-the-art energy accounting frameworks, models, and metrics that benefit the promotion of global sustainability.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The complexity of economic development and humanitarian crises means that energy science and technology should be involved in actions that address almost every major challenges of ecosystem health and sustainability. Energy is the engine of the world economy and the key to ecosystems’ functioning, which also has a great impact on global warming. The energy crisis, environmental pollution, overuse of natural resources, water supply shortages, global climate disruption, and deteriorating ecosystems are major challenges to address in order to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In light of the frontiers in energy sciences and disruptive innovation in eco-tech, we recognize the need to review and establish working mechanisms that identify and examine issues that are critical to future sustainable development, to offer advice to decision-makers in different social sectors (public and private), to secure a shared future for mankind, and to achieve shared prosperity and common interests through international communications and collaborations.

This study examines the benefits of renewable energy over non‐renewable sources, analyzing energy sourcing, technological progress, and efficient systems. Emphasizing international cooperation, it underscores the importance of practical action for energy sustainability. The current global scenario underlines the urgency of addressing energy consumption and its environmental implications. Contemporary international strategies aim to foster public awareness and engagement in sustainable energy initiatives. The World Environment Protection Commission aspires to qualify for an equitable transition toward energy‐efficient technologies, strategic policies, and achieving net‐zero carbon emissions. The principal aspiration is to enhance community understanding of energy and environmental policies. Furthermore, a root cause analysis reveals that understanding the foundational factors, both internal and external, underpinning the attainment of these objectives is of paramount importance. This study investigates the comparative advantages of renewable energy over non‐renewable sources. It conducts a thorough analysis of various factors, encompassing energy sourcing, variables, challenges, technological progress, and the deployment of energy‐efficient systems. Utilizing a strategic approach and conducting pre‐ and post‐analysis data evaluations, it aims to promote the adoption of sustainable practices for a greener future. Emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and the effective implementation of policies, this research underscores the critical role of practical action in fostering energy sustainability and environmental preservation.

Abstract:The obvious influences of global warming on human being have significantly increased, such as glacier retreat, changes in agricultural productivity, extreme weather, sea level rise, food security, health damage and biodiversity loss.The global warming is caused by many complicated factors, which makes how to deal with global warming becomes very challenging from both aspects of science and technology.Battling global warming needs multi-disciplinary knowledge and solutions.Undoubtedly, energy related factors are key and also most important among them.Energetic solution is one of those knowledge to provide a kind of efficient methods to global warming.In recent years, many researchers focused their work on energy topics and made significant progress in developing more clean, sustainable and efficient energy solutions for battling the global warming problems.The Global Conference on Global Warming 2014 (GCGW 2014) was held on May 25-29, 2014 in Peking University, Beijing, China.This conference includes 8 keynote lectures, 26 invited talks for parallel panel sessions and specialized sessions.In addition, GCGW 2014 had over 150 oral presentations by many international experts and researchers covering many important aspect of energy topics and their solutions to global warming.GCGW 2014 was a multi-disciplinary international conference on the global warming and potential solutions, and provided a platform for the exchange of latest scientific and technical information, the dissemination of state-of-the-art researches results on the issues, the presentation of the new developments in the area of global warming and the debate and shaping of future directions and priorities for better environment, sustainable development and energy security.After successful holding of GCGW 2014, we compiled together high-quality papers and made this special issue in the International Journal of Energy Research (IJER).Thus, we selected over 20 papers on global warming and potential energy solutions to consider for a special issue in IJER entitled 'Global Warming and Energetic Solutions' and have finally ended up with an outstanding special issue with 10 unique, high-quality papers after going through a rigorous peer-reviewing process for this special issue to improve their quality further for readers of IJER.Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to warmly thank the editor-in-chief, Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Dincer, editorial team of Wiley, all contributing authors, reviewers and organizing committee

Abstract:Huge and ever-increasing energy consumption and consequent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions pose unprecedented challenges to the sustainable development of the international human society. Our existing energy systems, where primary energy is converted to all sorts of final energy services, remain the major contributor to these global energy and environmental challenges. It is becoming a consensus that the conventional energy conversion and utilization mode should make place for a more sustainable one with higher energy conversion efficiency, lower air pollutions and GHG emissions, less dependence on fossil fuels, and more utilization of renewable energy. However, although there exist many technical options and technology pathways to enable this transition, they are usually treated separately by their very own technical communities and political groups without coordination with others, and the overall effect and potential is therefore greatly constrained as compared to a systematic approach where all alternatives are taken into consideration in an integrated way. Energy systems engineering provides a methodological modeling and optimization framework to address the complex energy and environmental problems existed in design and operation of energy systems in an integrated manner. This methodological framework is generic, and it can help to produce optimal design and operational plans for energy systems ranging from nanoscale, microscale, mesoscale, to mega-scale levels over operating horizons from milliseconds to months and years. This Article first gives a brief overview of typical methodologies of energy systems engineering, comprising superstructure based modeling, mixed-integer linear and nonlinear programming, multiobjective optimization, optimization under uncertainty, and life-cycle assessment. The concept of energy systems engineering and these methodologies are further illustrated via their applications in some typical real-life energy systems of very different nature and scale, ranging from polygeneration energy systems, hydrogen infrastructure planning, energy systems in commercial buildings, and biofuel supply chains.

Our use of energy in the twenty–first century must also be sustainable. Solar and water–based energy generation, and engineering of microbes to produce biofuels are a few examples of the alternatives. This Perspective puts these opportunities into a larger context by relating them to a number of aspects in the transportation and electricity generation sectors. It also provides a snapshot of the current energy landscape and discusses several research and development opportunities and pathways that could lead to a prosperous, sustainable and secure energy future for the world.

Abstract:<p>Sustainable energy conversion and management processes increasingly require an integrated approach, especially in the context of addressing the climate crisis. This editorial puts forth related research frontiers based on 28 research articles of the special issue that is dedicated to the 13th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems and regional series based on the 1st Latin American and 3rd South East European Conferences. Seven research frontiers are reviewed, the first three of which are (i) sustainable technologies for local energy systems, (ii) energy storage and advances in flexibility and (iii) solar energy penetration across multiple sectors. These research frontiers contain contributions based on renewable energy for wastewater treatment in islands, energy savings across urban built infrastructure, advanced district heating and cooling networks, power-to-gas and hydrogen production technologies, demand response in industrial systems, hybrid thermal energy storage, hybrid solar energy power plants, novel photovoltaic thermal technologies, and improved solar energy dispatchability. The research frontiers continue with (iv) wind, water based energy and the energy-water nexus, (v) effective valorization and upgrading of resources, (vi) combustion processes and better utilization of heat and (vii) carbon capture, storage and utilization. Significant contributions include innovative wind and hydrokinetic turbines, osmotic power technologies, synergetic solutions for water desalination, efficient catalytic pyrolysis, upgrading to reduce particle pollution, co-processing for alternative fuels, combustion characterization, electricity generation from waste heat sources, advances in heat exchangers and heat transfer, oxy-fuel combustion, post-combustion capture, and fly ash recycling for energy storage material. The research frontiers in this editorial provide ample opportunities to support societal transformations in the next decades to sustain planetary life-support systems.</p>

The analysis spans a comprehensive spectrum, encompassing renewable energy sources, technological innovations, regulatory frameworks, and collaborative initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change impacts. The review first explores the current state of sustainable energy technologies, shedding light on advancements in solar, wind, hydropower, and other renewable sources. It evaluates the feasibility, scalability, and economic viability of these technologies, considering their potential to revolutionize energy production while minimizing ecological footprints. Additionally, the study investigates the role of emerging technologies, such as energy storage systems and smart grids, in optimizing the integration of renewable energy into existing infrastructures. The second dimension of the review focuses on the global policy landscape, scrutinizing international agreements, accords, and collaborative efforts designed to combat climate change. The analysis assesses the effectiveness of existing policies in fostering sustainable energy transitions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Special attention is given to cross-border collaborations, funding mechanisms, and policy coherence among nations, highlighting success stories and identifying areas for improvement. Furthermore, the review examines the socio-economic implications of sustainable energy policies, considering their impact on job creation, economic growth, and social equity. By exploring case studies from diverse regions, the study aims to provide insights into the nuanced challenges and opportunities associated with the transition to sustainable energy systems. This policy review synthesizes key findings to offer a holistic understanding of the current landscape of sustainable energy solutions and climate change policies. By critically evaluating emerging trends and global responses, the study aims to inform policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders about effective strategies for navigating the complex terrain of sustainable energy transitions in the face of climate change.

Abstract:<p>Bioenergy is the main renewable energy source and the main primary energy source in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). However, in many cases biomass use is unsustainable and inefficient, resulting in significant environmental and health risks. This short communication synthesises the key findings from 15 research articles published in the Special Issue "Development of modern bioenergy approaches in low- and middle-income countries" published in the journal Biomass & Bioenergy and highlights the overarching research and deployment challenges of bioenergy in a LMIC context. The research presented in the Special Issue shows the relevance of demand-driven and participatory approaches and understanding the technical, environmental, economic and social implications of bioenergy and the synergies with other sectors to enable the full potential of sustainable bioenergy. The findings also show the contribution modern bioenergy systems can make to energy access and human and economic development, underpinning several of the Sustainable Development Goals. While there is large agreement that bioenergy can provide environmental, economic and social co-benefits, research not always capture the full breadth of sustainability and often focuses at the most obvious environmental and economic benefits such as climate change, energy access, related economic development and sustainable production and innovation. Including less visible co-benefits in the evaluation of bioenergy systems would strengthen the analysis of non-monetary values and would support institutional and commercial decision making beyond renewable energy and energy access, underpinning the overarching concept of the SDGS of "leaving no one behind".</p>
