Abstract:The urgency of addressing energy consumption and environmental impacts is critical. Contemporary strategies aim to increase public awareness and engagement in sustainable energy initiatives. This study examines the benefits of renewable energy over non‐renewable sources, analyzing energy sourcing, technological progress, and efficient systems. Emphasizing international cooperation, it underscores the importance of practical action for energy sustainability. The current global scenario underlines the urgency of addressing energy consumption and its environmental implications. Contemporary international strategies aim to foster public awareness and engagement in sustainable energy initiatives. The World Environment Protection Commission aspires to qualify for an equitable transition toward energy‐efficient technologies, strategic policies, and achieving net‐zero carbon emissions. The principal aspiration is to enhance community understanding of energy and environmental policies. Furthermore, a root cause analysis reveals that understanding the foundational factors, both internal and external, underpinning the attainment of these objectives is of paramount importance. This study investigates the comparative advantages of renewable energy over non‐renewable sources. It conducts a thorough analysis of various factors, encompassing energy sourcing, variables, challenges, technological progress, and the deployment of energy‐efficient systems. Utilizing a strategic approach and conducting pre‐ and post‐analysis data evaluations, it aims to promote the adoption of sustainable practices for a greener future. Emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and the effective implementation of policies, this research underscores the critical role of practical action in fostering energy sustainability and environmental preservation.

Abstract:In the past decades, many countries (e.g., Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change in their energy structures – from fossil-based resources to clean renewables. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced in the future mixed energy paradigms. This requires that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technological efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role in advancing the grid integration of renewables. In view of this issue, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g., wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored. Issues like demands to renewables, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and advanced grid integration are covered.

Abstract:Energy is the material foundation of human activities and also the single most valuable resource for the production activities of human society. Materials play a pivotal role in advancing technologies that can offer efficient renewable energy solutions for the future. This special issue has been established as an international foremost interdisciplinary forum that aims to publish high quality and original full research articles on all aspects of the study of materials for the deployment of renewable and sustainable energy technologies. The special issue covers experimental and theoretical aspects of materials and prototype devices for sustainable energy conversion, storage, and saving, together with materials needed for renewable energy production. It brings together stakeholders from universities, industries, government agents, and businesses that are involved in the invention, design, development, and implementation of sustainable technologies. Abstract:The paper highlights the energy dilemma in China’s modernization process. It explores the technological and policy options for the transition to a sustainable energy system in China with Tsinghua University’s Low Carbon Energy Model (LCEM). China has already taken intensive efforts to promote research, development, demonstration and commercialization of sustainable energy technologies over the past five year. The policy actions cover binding energy conservation and environmental pollution control targets, economic incentives for sustainable energy, and public R&D supports. In order to achieve the sustainable energy system transformation eventually, however, China needs to take further actions such as strengthening R&D of radically innovative sustainable energy technologies and systems such as poly-generation, enhancing the domestic manufacturing capacity of sustainable energy technologies and systems, creating stronger economic incentives for research, development, demonstration and commercialization of sustainable energy technologies, and playing a leading role in international technology collaborations.

Abstract:One of the greatest challenges facing our world today is climate change, brought about by the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in large part due to the massive use of fossil fuels to satisfy our society's ever-increasing energy demands. The transition to clean energy resources requires the development of new, efficient, and sustainable technologies for energy conversion and storage. Several low carbon energy resources will contribute to tomorrow's energy supply landscape, including solar, wind, and tidal power, yet rechargeable batteries will likely remain the dominant technology for storing this energy and using it in an economic and efficient manner for decades to come. For instance, the gradual replacement of internal combustion engine vehicles powered by petroleum or diesel by electric vehicles and photovoltaic power charging stations is one way we can lessen our reliance on fossil fuels. Improving the performance of energy storage and conversion devices toward higher energy and power density, and greater efficiency, durability, and safety, hinges on the development of new materials and processes, specifically, on tuning the properties of the component materials by modulating their crystal structure and microstructure, and on optimizing materials processing and device assembly protocols. Today, there is a clear need for a dedicated publication platform to cover high-impact and multidisciplinary scientific contributions that will pave the way to the next generation of energy conversion and storage devices. We expect this journal to grow in the coming years, as part of the fourth industrial revolution featuring the efficient use of renewable energies, in addition to navigating a digital world and accelerated by the current pandemic.

Abstract:More voices are calling for a quicker transition towards clean energy. The exploration and exploitation of clean energy such as wind energy and solar energy are effective means to optimise energy structure and improve energy efficiency. To provide in-depth understanding of clean energy transition, this paper utilises a combination of multiple bibliometric mapping techniques, including HistCite, CiteSpace and R Bibliometrix, to conduct a systematic review on 2,191 clean energy related articles obtained from Web of Science (WoS). We identify five current main research streams in the clean energy field, including Energy Transition, Clean Energy and Carbon Emission Policy, Impact of Oil Price on Alternative Energy Stocks, Clean Energy and Economics, and Venture Capital Investments in Clean Energy. Clearly, the effectiveness of policy-driven and market-driven energy transition is an important ongoing debate. Emerging research topics are also discussed and classified into six areas: Clean Energy Conversion Technology and Biomass Energy Utilisation, Optimisation of Energy Generation Technology, Policy-Making in Clean Energy Transition, Impact of Clean Energy Use and Economic Development on Carbon Emissions, Household Use of Clean Energy, and Clean Energy Stock Markets. Accordingly, more and more research attention has been paid to how to improve energy efficiency through advanced clean energy technology, and how to make targeted policies for clean energy transition and energy market development. This article moves beyond the traditional literature review methods and delineates a systematic research agenda for clean energy research, providing research directions for achieving low-carbon development through the clean energy transition.

Abstract:Energy crisis and environmental pollution have expedited the transition of the energy system. Global use of low-carbon energy has increased from 1:6.16 to 1:5.37. Smart energy systems have received significant support and development to accelerate the development of smart cities and achieve the carbon neutrality goal. As a result of analyzing recent related publications and weighing their merits and downsides, it is determined that a more comprehensive and objective analysis of the main technologies underlying smart energy systems is necessary for the context of the new era. We report thoroughly on the six important hotspot technologies in smart energy systems, and undertake a comparative analysis of each technology's performance features, application status, and challenges. The ten key obstacles to developing a smart energy system are examined in terms of technology constraints, the social environment, human survival, and extreme climate circumstances. The four opportunities that smart energy systems confront in the digital age are examined in terms of governmental support, technology innovation, and public participation. The purpose of this research is to advance the creation of smart energy systems and the sustainable development of society in two ways: i) Smart energy system research should begin with a combination of technological innovation and practical application; ii) Key technologies in smart energy systems should consider the needs of people's livelihoods to evolve in a more intelligent and diverse path.

Abstract:Energy transitions are ongoing processes all over the world. While sustainable solutions are envisioned for the future, many societies are still under high-carbon and high-pollution energy regime borne by fossil fuels. How to design pathways towards sustainable energy transition has attracted worldwide concerns. Understanding the possible transition pathways of the energy system requires the integration of new energy technologies, environmental sciences, economics and management. This Special Issue of Journal of Cleaner Production targets to collect the latest research results on sustainable energy systems, discover innovative avenues and inspiring models and share knowledge on energy system modelling and management. In this paper, we identify 4 themes on sustainable energy transition pathways including: (1) Sustainable energy economics and management; (2) Renewable energy generation and consumption; (3) Environmental impacts of energy systems; and (4) Electric vehicle and energy storage. Theories, technologies, innovative models, and successful experiences are discussed accordingly. It is suggested that creative, robust and audacious strategies in governance, management and education are needed to boost sustainable energy transition across various scales and sectors.

Abstract:The biggest concern of the decade is to find a way to power the future in the most ecofriendly and green manner, owing to current energy crisis and environmental pollution. A major side effect of conventional technological advancements is the inability to naturally digest and decompose the substances human society has created. This review summarizes green energy conversion and storage devices with a particular focus on recent advancements in emerging technologies. Technical innovations in energy‐related materials, device structures, and new applications are discussed. Furthermore, hybrid energy and self‐charging power systems are discussed in conjunction with recent and future research directions. The multifunctional applications of these energy systems are also emphasized. It is expected that this review will provide a platform to understand the current landmarks and promote further research to broaden the utility of energy devices. This review presents recent progress on emerging methods for green energy conversion, storage, and power systems. A broad spectrum from advisable materials, novel device designs to performance optimization even in harsh environments is covered. Multifunctional utilization of some existing energy technologies is discussed to solve real life problems. This review is anticipated to be of great importance for the design and improvement of future energy technologies.
