Abstract:Carbon peaking and carbon neutralization trigger a technical revolution in energy & environment related fields. Development of new technologies for green energy production and storage, industrial energy saving and efficiency reinforcement, carbon capture, and pollutant gas treatment is in highly imperious demand. The emerging porous framework materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), owing to the permanent porosity, tremendous specific surface area, designable structure and customizable functionality, have shown great potential in major energy-consuming industrial processes, including sustainable energy gas catalytic conversion, energy-efficient industrial gas separation and storage. Herein, this manuscript presents a systematic review of porous framework materials for global and comprehensive energy & environment related applications, from a macroscopic and application perspective.

Abstract:One of the greatest challenges facing our world today is climate change, brought about by the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in large part due to the massive use of fossil fuels to satisfy our society's ever-increasing energy demands. The transition to clean energy resources requires the development of new, efficient, and sustainable technologies for energy conversion and storage. Several low carbon energy resources will contribute to tomorrow's energy supply landscape, including solar, wind, and tidal power, yet rechargeable batteries will likely remain the dominant technology for storing this energy and using it in an economic and efficient manner for decades to come. For instance, the gradual replacement of internal combustion engine vehicles powered by petroleum or diesel by electric vehicles and photovoltaic power charging stations is one way we can lessen our reliance on fossil fuels. Improving the performance of energy storage and conversion devices toward higher energy and power density, and greater efficiency, durability, and safety, hinges on the development of new materials and processes, specifically, on tuning the properties of the component materials by modulating their crystal structure and microstructure, and on optimizing materials processing and device assembly protocols. Today, there is a clear need for a dedicated publication platform to cover high-impact and multidisciplinary scientific contributions that will pave the way to the next generation of energy conversion and storage devices. We expect this journal to grow in the coming years, as part of the fourth industrial revolution featuring the efficient use of renewable energies, in addition to navigating a digital world and accelerated by the current pandemic.

Advanced Sustainable Systems

Abstract:The biggest concern of the decade is to find a way to power the future in the most ecofriendly and green manner, owing to current energy crisis and environmental pollution. A major side effect of conventional technological advancements is the inability to naturally digest and decompose the substances human society has created. This review summarizes green energy conversion and storage devices with a particular focus on recent advancements in emerging technologies. Technical innovations in energy‐related materials, device structures, and new applications are discussed. Furthermore, hybrid energy and self‐charging power systems are discussed in conjunction with recent and future research directions. The multifunctional applications of these energy systems are also emphasized. It is expected that this review will provide a platform to understand the current landmarks and promote further research to broaden the utility of energy devices. This review presents recent progress on emerging methods for green energy conversion, storage, and power systems. A broad spectrum from advisable materials, novel device designs to performance optimization even in harsh environments is covered. Multifunctional utilization of some existing energy technologies is discussed to solve real life problems. This review is anticipated to be of great importance for the design and improvement of future energy technologies.

Abstract:Large‐scale electrical energy storage has become more important than ever for reducing fossil energy consumption in transportation and for the widespread deployment of intermittent renewable energy in electric grid. However, significant challenges exist for its applications. Here, the status and challenges are reviewed from the perspective of materials science and materials chemistry in electrochemical energy storage technologies, such as Li‐ion batteries, sodium (sulfur and metal halide) batteries, Pb‐acid battery, redox flow batteries, and supercapacitors. Perspectives and approaches are introduced for emerging battery designs and new chemistry combinations to reduce the cost of energy storage devices. The different applications of energy storage, different technologies, and the cost requirements from the kilowatt to gigawatt scale are compared. Li‐ion batteries have attracted attention for transportation storage, while many other technologies are considered for stationary applications.

Abstract:Abstract Semiconductors and the associated methodologies applied to electrochemistry have recently grown as an emerging field in energy materials and technologies. For example, semiconductor membranes and heterostructure fuel cells are new technological trend, which differ from the traditional fuel cell electrochemistry principle employing three basic functional components: anode, electrolyte, and cathode. The electrolyte is key to the device performance by providing an ionic charge flow pathway between the anode and cathode while preventing electron passage. In contrast, semiconductors and derived heterostructures with electron (hole) conducting materials have demonstrated to be much better ionic conductors than the conventional ionic electrolytes. The energy band structure and alignment, band bending and built-in electric field are all important elements in this context to realize the necessary fuel cell functionalities. This review further extends to semiconductor-based electrochemical energy conversion and storage, describing their fundamentals and working principles, with the intention of advancing the understanding of the roles of semiconductors and energy bands in electrochemical devices for energy conversion and storage, as well as applications to meet emerging demands widely involved in energy applications, such as photocatalysis/water splitting devices, batteries and solar cells. This review provides new ideas and new solutions to problems beyond the conventional electrochemistry and presents new interdisciplinary approaches to develop clean energy conversion and storage technologies. Abstract:Fossil energy supports the development of human society but is facing depletion because of industrialization. In order to solve the formidable problem in compatibility and coordination between energy utilization and the environment and accelerate the development of sustainable energy, it is pressing to realize the transition from fossil to sustainable energy as soon as possible to solve common challenges in human development. Energy technology revolution will bring new opportunities and challenges in the development of the engineering thermophysics discipline. According to urgent needs for energy, power and environmental issues and new progress in discipline development, the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics is aiming for constructing a sustainable energy system and carrying out strategic research on the development of an energy paradigm and frontier growth point of the engineering thermophysics discipline in China. The new integrated development paradigm of energy, resources, and environment provides a promising support for the realization of a sustainable energy strategy. Key objectives of the new development paradigm is to open up new channels of sustainable energy, carry out an energy diversification strategy, and try to solve the formidable problems in compatibility and coordination between energy utilization and the environment, including clean utilization of traditional fossil energy sources, development of green energy, and integration of energy resources into the environment. Important research directions for future development in the engineering thermophysics discipline include: thermophysical properties of an environment friendly working medium; modern analysis methods for new energy sources; combustion under extreme conditions; theories and methods for efficient, clean, and low carbon conversion of fuels; efficient conversion and utilization of solar energy; regional, intelligent, and diversified utilization of wind energy; new methods and mechanisms for efficient and low-cost utilization of biomass; comprehensive cascade utilization of chemical and physical energy sources of fuels; distributed energy system with multiple energy source complementation and its optimization integration theory; energy consumption minimization principle on CO2 capture based on comprehensive cascade utilization of energy; and novel high-efficiency energy storage method based on entropy principle.

Abstract:With the rapid consumption of fossil fuel and the severe environmental problems, new energy sources have become an issue all over the world. Focusing on the theoretical aspects, we review the investigations on adsorption of both atomic and molecular oxygen at metal Pt and its alloys. Studies of oxygen reduction reaction and removal of CO are also included. Furthermore the current status of first-principles approaches to the mechanism of methanol steam reforming catalyzed by Pd/ZnO is presented. For hydrogen storage we comment on the theoretical investigations on hydrogen storage by chemical and physical adsorption. Finally we discuss the application of theoretical methods to bulk heterojunction solar cells and dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:Diminishing petroleum reserves and oscillations of the global petroleum market, together with the influence on the environment in terms of greenhouse gas emissions have accelerated the needs to explore renewable feedstocks and to seek novel sustainable production systems. Process synthesis, the core of process systems engineering, can be predicted to be the powerful tool to construct an environmental‐friendly, cost‐effective sustainable energy system. Following the brief descriptions of the main methodologies for process synthesis, the present article reviews current activities on the optimal synthesis of biorenewables conversion processes, polygeneration processes, as well as carbon capture processes. Set in the context of exist achievements and future energy and environment requirements, we further elucidate the potential research vistas on optimal synthesis of novel energy systems, specifically, (a) novel biorenewable conversion process; (b) innovative materials‐based carbon capture process; (c) solar/wind driven energy conversion system; (d) integrated biorenewable conversion process for the production of chemicals. Abstract:About a decade after the energy transformation (Energiewende) started in Germany, it is now clear that the vision about a national all-electric energy system based upon solar and bio-based energy is not realistic. Such a hypothetical system cannot replace the function of a fossil-based system augmented with local renewable energy resources (RES) stemming from solar, wind, biomass, and hydroelectricity. Over the last few years, the vision grew globally that a combination of local RES and a global trade system for RES via hydrogen and its derivatives will be the functional solution for defossilizing the energy supply systems. The core element for this vision is the interconversion between free electrons and electrons bound in chemical bonds. This is impossible without catalysis becoming the central family of technologies for creating renewable molecular energy carriers. They combine high storage capacities with compatibility to the fossil liquid and gaseous energy carriers for which we have global technologies already in place. The interconversion of free electrons into bound electrons allows the transport of RES and solves the large-scale storage issue introduced by the volatility of local RES alone. Energy storage and chemical energy conversion become two fundamental capabilities of future energy systems resting both on the command and mega-scale realization of catalytic processes. The investigation of model systems for heterogeneous catalysts catching some of the complexity of real catalyst systems may add substantially to an attempt to rationally design catalysts and catalytic materials to effectively harvest and store energy. Five case studies discuss an approach to model disperse metal catalysts and its use in thermal and photo chemical processes.
