Abstract:While the majority of the technologies developed for energy storage are macrosized, the reactions involved in energy storage, such as diffusion, ionic transport, and surface-based reactions, occur on the microscale. In light of this, microfluidics with the ability to manipulate such reactions and fluids on the micrometer scale has emerged as an interesting platform for the development of energy storage systems. Herein, the advances in utilizing microfluidic technologies in energy storage and release systems are reviewed in terms of four aspects. First, miniaturized microfluidic devices to store various forms of energy such as electrochemical, biochemical, and solar energy with unique architectures and enhanced performances are discussed. Second, novel energy materials with the desired geometries and characteristics that can be fabricated via microfluidic techniques are reviewed. Third, applications enabled by such microfluidic energy storage and release systems, particularly focusing on medical, environmental, and modeling purposes, are presented. Lastly, some remaining problems and challenges and possible future works in this field are suggested.

Abstract:Efficient clean energy harvesting, conversion, and storage technologies are of immense importance for the sustainable development of human society. To this end, scientists have made significant advances in recent years regarding new materials and devices for improving the energy conversion efficiency for photovoltaics, thermoelectric generation, photoelectrochemical/electrolytic hydrogen generation, and rechargeable metal ion batteries. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a platform for research scientists and engineers in these areas to demonstrate and exchange their latest research findings. This thematic topic undoubtedly represents an extremely important technological direction, covering materials processing, characterization, simulation, and performance evaluation of thin films used in energy harvesting, conversion, and storage.

Abstract:Flexible electronics in mobile environments such as those encountered in wearable devices also require energy sources. Ideally the energy source, typically batteries and supercapacitors, should also be flexible and have the same form factor as the electronic system. This has given rise to a new paradigm of flexible energy storage devices.The requirement for flexibility imposes limits on thickness of the component parts of a battery or supercapacitor. As a result the current collectors, electrode layers and the electrolytes all have to be thin enough and not crack or disintegrate under repeated cycles of flexing to the specified minimum arc diameter, typically 1 - 5 cm. In order to achieve sufficient reaction surface/volume in thin film form to have the required energy/power capacity nanomaterial formulations of the electrode become essential. The electrolyte requirements for a flexible energy storage device are particularly challenging. Hermetic sealing of a liquid electrolyte in a flexible package is never ideal. This leads to loss of electrolyte and performance over unacceptable short times. Solid electrolytes are therefore preferred, but they have higher resistance than their liquid counterparts and lead to a loss in performance.Recent developments in flexible batteries. Flexible primary and secondary batteries based on aqueous electrolytes being researched by the authors are introduced. Nanomaterial enhanced solid electrolytes for flexible Zn- MnO2 batteries are also introduced.

Abstract:With the increasing concern about climate change, environmental pollution, and sustainable development, the energy system is evolving towards a low-carbon form powered by a large share of renewable energy. Renewable generation from wind and solar is intermittent and volatile, posing great challenges to the secure and economical operation of power systems which requires simultaneous balance between power demand and supply. In this regard, various energy storage, including battery, pumped storage, compressed-air storage, flywheel, supper-capacitor, etc., are recognized as indispensable technologies to deal with the intermittency from renewables and facilitate the low-carbon transition of power systems. Energy storage can be implemented in different parts of the power supply chain from generation-side to grid-side and demand-side, and can benefit the power system operation in multiple time scales from seasonal energy balance to near-real-time stability control.

Abstract:With the development of flexible devices, the demand for wearable power sources has increased and gradually become imperative. Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have attracted lots of research interest due to their high theoretical energy density and excellent safety properties, which can meet the wearable energy supply requirements. Here, the flexibility of energy storage devices is discussed first, followed by the chemistries and development of flexible ZABs. The design of flexible electrodes, the properties of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), and the construction of deformable structures are discussed in depth. The researchers working on flexible energy storage devices will benefit from the work.

Abstract:Smart energy storage has revolutionized portable electronics and electrical vehicles. The current smart energy storage devices have penetrated into flexible electronic markets at an unprecedented rate. Flexible batteries are key power sources to enable vast flexible devices, which put forward additional requirements, such as bendable, twistable, stretchable, and ultrathin, to adapt mechanical deformation under the working conditions. This review summarizes the recent advances in construction and configuration of flexible batteries and discusses the general metrics to benchmark various flexible batteries with different materials and chemistries. Moreover, we present advanced prototype flexible batteries developed by some companies to afford general envision of the technological status. Lastly, the critical points are summarized in the development of flexible batteries and remaining challenges are also presented for the future design of flexible batteries in practical perspectives.

Abstract:The utilization of renewable energy is the ultimate way to meet the increasing energy demands of our modern society. The efficient storage and utilization of the energy in different ways are the current hot topics in the research community. Among them, the solar water splitting, photocatalysis, and lithium–sulfur batteries are with great application promise. The research will provide strategies for the production, storage, and application of energy for industry.This special issue focuses on "Challenges and Possibilities of Energy Storage". It contains nine review papers, one research paper, and one News and Views which are from Technische Universität Ilmenau, Soochow University, Institute of Semiconductors CAS, Westlake University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, etc. The latest progress in this field from domestic and abroad are introduced in this issue. Prof. Yong Lei's original research paper entitled "Highly-rough surface carbon nanofibers film as an effective interlayer for lithium–sulfur batteries" from Technische Universität Ilmenau, Prof. Zhenhui Kang's review paper entitled "Optoelectronic and photocatalytic properties of I–III–VI QDs: Bridging between traditional and emerging new QDs" from Soochow University, Prof. Zhijie Wang's review paper entitled "Engineering the photoelectrochemical behaviors of ZnO for efficient solar water splitting" from Institute of Semiconductors CAS, and Prof. Dajun Shu's review paper entitled "Regulation of surface properties of photocatalysis material TiO2 by strain engineering" introduce the details of challenges and possibilities in energy storage, etc. We believe this special issue will promote the academic exchange, bridge the researchers from academy and industry who are interested in this topic. Abstract:We considered a novel energy storage system based on the compression of air through pumped water. Differently from CAES on trial, the proposed indirect compression leaves the opportunity to choose the kind of compression from adiabatic to isothermal. The energy storage process could be both fast or slow leading to different configuration and applications. These novel storage system are modular and could be applied in different scales for different locations and applications, being very flexible in charge and discharge process. The system may offer an ideal energy buffer for wind and solar storage with no (or negligible) environment hazard. The main features of this novel energy storage system will be showed together with overall energy and power data.

Abstract:Research into flexible energy-storage devices with high energy density and superior mechanical performance has aroused considerable interest for the development of flexible electronics. Numerous new materials and strategies have been developed to obtain soft, safe, and high-performance flexible electrodes, which are essential components of flexible energy storage devices. The common preparation methods and fabrication techniques of flexible electrode are summarized, including their mechanisms, operations, advantages and disadvantages, applicable conditions, and suitable materials. The electrode materials are also briefly discussed according to their characteristics and morphologies, and suggestions on the method preferred for different materials are given. Perspectives on the development of flexible-electrode fabrication are also given.

Abstract:Energy-storage technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors have become fundamental building blocks in modern society. Recently, the emerging direction toward the ever-growing market of flexible and wearable electronics has nourished progress in building multifunctional energy-storage systems that can be bent, folded, crumpled, and stretched while maintaining their electrochemical functions under deformation. Here, recent progress and well-developed strategies in research designed to accomplish flexible and stretchable lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors are reviewed. The challenges of developing novel materials and configurations with tailored features, and in designing simple and large-scaled manufacturing methods that can be widely utilized are considered. Furthermore, the perspectives and opportunities for this emerging field of materials science and engineering are also discussed.

Abstract:As a flexible power source, energy storage has many potential applications in renewable energy generation grid integration, power transmission and distribution, distributed generation, micro grid and ancillary services such as frequency regulation, etc. In this paper, the latest energy storage technology profile is analyzed and summarized, in terms of technology maturity, efficiency, scale, lifespan, cost and applications, taking into consideration their impact on the whole power system, including generation, transmission, distribution and utilization. The application scenarios of energy storage technologies are reviewed and investigated, and global and Chinese potential markets for energy storage applications are described. The challenges of large-scale energy storage application in power systems are presented from the aspect of technical and economic considerations. Meanwhile the development prospect of global energy storage market is forecasted, and application prospect of energy storage is analyzed.
