Abstract:The intrinsic limitations of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with regard to safety, cost, and the availability of raw materials have promoted research on so-called "post-LIBs". The recent intense research of post-LIBs provides an invaluable lesson that existing electrode materials used in LIBs may not perform as well in post-LIBs, calling for new material designs compliant with emerging batteries based on new chemistries. One promising approach in this direction is the development of materials with intercalated water or organic molecules, as these materials demonstrate superior electrochemical performance in emerging battery systems. The enlarged ionic channel dimensions and effective shielding of the electrostatic interaction between carrier ions and the lattice host are the origins of the observed electrochemical performance. Moreover, these intercalants serve as interlayer pillars to sustain the framework for prolonged cycles. Representative examples of such intercalated materials applied to batteries based on Li+, Na+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ ions and supercapacitors are considered, along with their impact in materials research.

Abstract:Anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries are promising for achieving ultra‐high specific energy and high safety. The key scientific issues affecting the performance of anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries are dissected and the optimization strategies are summarized, indicating the direction of development in this frontier hotspot. Anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries are promising for next‐generation energy storage systems, especially the mobile sectors, due to their enhanced energy density, improved safety, and extended calendar life. However, the inefficiency of lithium plating and stripping leads to rapid capacity degradation due to the absence of excess lithium inventory. Therefore, dissecting the difficulties and challenges faced by anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries can pave the way to improving the cycle life of many lithium batteries. In this review, the key issues affecting capacity degradation are elaborated step‐by‐step based on the current understanding of anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries. Furthermore, various strategies for optimizing performance are targeted. Finally, future opportunities and possible directions for anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries are evaluated, aiming to stimulate the exploration of this emerging field.

Abstract:Due the limited supply of fossil fuels and environmental degradation arising from flue gas emissions,it is imperative to discover clean and sustainable energy,and to develop effective and green energy storage devices.Conventional lithium ion batteries cannot meet the requirements of future large scale electrical applications such as electrical automobiles which need higher energy density.We present here an overview of our recent work,beginning with an introduction to the concept and principle of hybrid electrolytes,and followed by a detailed discussion of the design and electrochemical performance of hybrid electrolyte-based post-lithium batteries such as Li-Cu and Li-air batteries.The hybrid electrolyte technology is considered to be a promising method to develop electrochemical high energy storage devices.

Abstract:AbstractWith the development of energy storage technology, the demand for high energy density and high security batteries is increasing, making the research of lithium battery (LB) technology an extremely important pursuit. However, the poor structural stability of electrode materials, high interfacial impedance between electrolyte and electrode, and the growth of lithium dendrites have seriously hindered the commercialization of LBs. Recently, due to their unique electronic structures and hybrid forms, boron‐based materials have been widely used in different LB components, such as electrodes, electrolytes, separators, additives, and binders, to resolve these problems. Here, a basic understanding of boron and boron‐based materials is first introduced. Subsequently, the recent research progress on the application of boron in each component of the LB is summarized, aiming to understand the hybrid forms of boron and their potential for use in LB materials. Finally, some new strategies and perspectives on the application of boron in LB materials are proposed. Here, the aim is to provide a clear insight on the study of boron in energy storage materials and contribute to the promotion of further research in this area.

Abstract:Developing new types of rechargeable batteries with high energy densities and low cost have received increasing attentions, aiming to reduce the dependence on high-priced lithium. Beyond Li-ion batteries, the potential alternatives including Na-ion batteries, Li-S batteries and Li-air batteries have been investigated recently, which are required to be viable for commercial applications. From this point of view, to understand the electrochemical reaction mechanisms and kinetics of these batteries has become the key challenge to make breakthroughs in the field of new energy storage. In this review, we present a critical overview of the two dimensional nanomaterials-based batteries (except Li-ion-based batteries) that could meet such demonds. To develop new energy storage devices with more promising performances, the microstructure evolution and atomic scale storage mechanism of these batteries are comprehensively summarized. In addition, the major challenges and opportunities of advanced characterization techniques are finally discussed. We do hope that this review will give the readers a clear and profound understanding of the electrochemical reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the as-discussed batteries, thus effectively contributing to the smart design of future-generation energy storage devices.

Abstract:With increasing demands for safe, high capacity energy storage to support personal electronics, newer devices such as unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the commercialization of electric vehicles, current energy storage technologies are facing increased challenges. Although alternative batteries have been intensively investigated, lithium (Li) batteries are still recognized as the preferred energy storage solution for the consumer electronics markets and next generation automobiles. However, the commercialized Li batteries still have disadvantages, such as low capacities, potential safety issues, and unfavorable cycling life. Therefore, the design and development of electromaterials toward high‐energy‐density, long‐life‐span Li batteries with improved safety is a focus for researchers in the field of energy materials. Herein, recent advances in the development of novel organic electrolytes are summarized toward solid‐state Li batteries with higher energy density and improved safety. On the basis of new insights into ionic conduction and design principles of organic‐based solid‐state electrolytes, specific strategies toward developing these electrolytes for Li metal anodes, high‐energy‐density cathode materials (e.g., high voltage materials), as well as the optimization of cathode formulations are outlined. Finally, prospects for next generation solid‐state electrolytes are also proposed.

Abstract:Energy storage is the absent enabler to facilitate the proliferation of renewable-but-intermittent solar and wind energy. There is one primary metric for stationary storage: levelized energy cost over the life time of devices. It is, thus, a must to rely on earth-abundant elements, which rules out lithium-based devices for the grid-scale storage purposes as lithium is rare and its excavation is geopolitically challenged. This warrants attention for alternative rechargeable batteries. At Oregon State University, we seek fundamental understanding of design principles of electrodes for new sustainable batteries. We take an iterative approach to gain knowledge by integrating rational syntheses, advanced characterization, including synchrotron x-ray, neutron scattering, and associated pair distribution function studies, as well as DFT calculations. In this talk, I will talk about our recent results on the mechanisms of Na-ion and K-ion storage in non-graphithic carbon. I will introduce a design principle of hard carbon anode for Na-ion batteries based on its structure-property correlations. I will introduce limitations of carbon anode materials for K-ion storage and strategies in addressing them. I will discuss the relevance of organic solids as cathode of dual-ion batteries. Additionally, I will share new results on the emerging hydronium-ion batteries and ammonium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The prosperity and sustained development of microsized electronics in myriad applications stimulate the endless pursuit of matching power suppliers with higher energy storage and faster power delivery per footprint area/volume. To this end, ingesting sufficient active materials to participate in charge storage without inducing any obvious side effect on electron/ion transport in the device system is yearning and essential, which requires ingenious designs in electrode materials, device configurations and advanced fabrication techniques for the energy storage microdevices. In this review, strategies to boost the electrochemical performances of existing and emerging electrode materials, innovative device configuration designs as well as advanced fabrication techniques have been well elaborated, including the energy storage mechanism, structure-performance correlation, pros and cons of each material, configuration and fabrication technique. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives in this flourishing field are proposed.

Abstract:Tremendous efforts have been dedicated into the development of high-performance energy storage devices with nanoscale design and hybrid approaches. The boundary between the electrochemical capacitors and batteries becomes less distinctive. The same material may display capacitive or battery-like behavior depending on the electrode design and the charge storage guest ions. Therefore, the underlying mechanisms and the electrochemical processes occurring upon charge storage may be confusing for researchers who are new to the field as well as some of the chemists and material scientists already in the field. This review provides fundamentals of the similarities and differences between electrochemical capacitors and batteries from kinetic and material point of view. Basic techniques and analysis methods to distinguish the capacitive and battery-like behavior are discussed. Furthermore, guidelines for material selection, the state-of-the-art materials, and the electrode design rules to advanced electrode are proposed.

Abstract:Li-ion batteries have played a key role in the portable electronics and electrification of transport in modern society. Nevertheless, the limited highest energy density of Li-ion batteries is not sufficient for the long-term needs of society. Since lithium is the lightest metal among all metallic elements and possesses the lowest redox potential of −3.04 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode, it delivers the highest theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mA h g−1 and a high working voltage of full batteries which causes a great interest in electrochemical energy storage systems. Lithium-sulfur, lithium-oxygen and corresponding all solid state batteries based on metal lithium anode have received widely attention owing to their high energy densities. However, the problems in the cathode, electrolyte and anode of these three systems restrict their practical application. In this review, the research status and problems of these three energy storage systems are summarized and the challenges and future perspectives are also outlined.

Abstract:Abstract Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the most important electrochemical energy storage devices due to their high energy density, long cycle life, and low cost. During the past decades, many review papers outlining the advantages of state-of-the-art LIBs have been published, and extensive efforts have been devoted to improving their specific energy density and cycle life performance. These papers are primarily focused on the design and development of various advanced cathode and anode electrode materials, with less attention given to the other important components of the battery. The “nonelectroconductive” components are of equal importance to electrode active materials and can significantly affect the performance of LIBs. They could directly impact the capacity, safety, charging time, and cycle life of batteries and thus affect their commercial application. This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of nonaqueous electrolytes, binders, and separators for LIBs and discusses their impact on the battery performance. In addition, the challenges and perspectives for future development of LIBs are discussed, and new avenues for state-of-the-art LIBs to reach their full potential for a wide range of practical applications are outlined.
