To this end, scientists have made significant advances in recent years regarding new materials and devices for improving the energy conversion efficiency for photovoltaics, thermoelectric generation, photoelectrochemical/electrolytic hydrogen generation, and rechargeable metal ion batteries. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a platform for research scientists and engineers in these areas to demonstrate and exchange their latest research findings. This thematic topic undoubtedly represents an extremely important technological direction, covering materials processing, characterization, simulation, and performance evaluation of thin films used in energy harvesting, conversion, and storage.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials have received tremendous interest due to their unique mechanical/electrical properties and overall behavior contributed by the complex synergy of bulk and interfacial properties for efficient and effective energy conversion and storage. The booming development of nanotechnology affords emerging but effective tools in designing advanced energy material. We reviewed the significant progress and dominated nanostructured energy materials in electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices, including lithium ion batteries, lithium–sulfur batteries, lithium–oxygen batteries, lithium metal batteries, and supercapacitors. The use of nanostructured electrocatalyst for effective electrocatalysis in oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions for fuel cells and metal–air batteries was also included. The challenges in the undesirable side reactions between electrolytes and electrode due to high electrode/electrolyte contact area, low volumetric energy density of electrode owing to low tap density, and uniform production of complex energy materials in working devices should be overcome to fully demonstrate the advanced energy nanostructures for electrochemical energy conversion and storage. The energy chemistry at the interfaces of nanostructured electrode/electrolyte is highly expected to guide the rational design and full demonstration of energy materials in a working device.

Abstract:The utilization of renewable energy is the ultimate way to meet the increasing energy demands of our modern society. The efficient storage and utilization of the energy in different ways are the current hot topics in the research community. Among them, the solar water splitting, photocatalysis, and lithium–sulfur batteries are with great application promise. The research will provide strategies for the production, storage, and application of energy for industry.This special issue focuses on "Challenges and Possibilities of Energy Storage". It contains nine review papers, one research paper, and one News and Views which are from Technische Universität Ilmenau, Soochow University, Institute of Semiconductors CAS, Westlake University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, etc. The latest progress in this field from domestic and abroad are introduced in this issue. Abstract:As one of the potential alternatives to current lithium‐ion batteries, sodium‐based energy storage technologies including sodium batteries and capacitors are widely attracting increasing attention from both industry and academia. However, the performance and sustainability of current sodium‐based energy storage devices mostly rely on various critical materials and traditional energy‐consuming fabrication processes. Meanwhile, the detailed working mechanisms of some sodium‐based energy storage technologies are still under debate. Hence, how to realize low‐cost, sustainable, and high‐performance sodium‐based energy storage technologies remains challenging from the perspective of theoretical studies, material diversification, and device optimization. In this review, the development state of sodium‐based energy storage technologies from research background to principles is comprehensively discussed, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of state‐of‐the‐art sodium‐based energy storage devices are systematically analyzed, thus providing critical insight into the challenges and opportunities for emerging sodium‐based energy storage technologies to achieve not only improved performance, but also enhanced sustainability.

Abstract:The prosperity and sustained development of microsized electronics in myriad applications stimulate the endless pursuit of matching power suppliers with higher energy storage and faster power delivery per footprint area/volume. To this end, ingesting sufficient active materials to participate in charge storage without inducing any obvious side effect on electron/ion transport in the device system is yearning and essential, which requires ingenious designs in electrode materials, device configurations and advanced fabrication techniques for the energy storage microdevices. In this review, strategies to boost the electrochemical performances of existing and emerging electrode materials, innovative device configuration designs as well as advanced fabrication techniques have been well elaborated, including the energy storage mechanism, structure-performance correlation, pros and cons of each material, configuration and fabrication technique. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives in this flourishing field are proposed.

Abstract:With the increasing concern about climate change, environmental pollution, and sustainable development, the energy system is evolving towards a low-carbon form powered by a large share of renewable energy. Renewable generation from wind and solar is intermittent and volatile, posing great challenges to the secure and economical operation of power systems which requires simultaneous balance between power demand and supply. In this regard, various energy storage, including battery, pumped storage, compressed-air storage, flywheel, supper-capacitor, etc., are recognized as indispensable technologies to deal with the intermittency from renewables and facilitate the low-carbon transition of power systems. Energy storage can be implemented in different parts of the power supply chain from generation-side to grid-side and demand-side, and can benefit the power system operation in multiple time scales from seasonal energy balance to near-real-time stability control.

Abstract:Developing high‐performance electrode materials is an urgent requirement for next‐generation energy conversion and storage systems. Due to the exceptional features, mesoporous materials have shown great potential to achieve high‐performance electrodes with high energy/power density, long lifetime, increased interfacial reaction activity, and enhanced kinetics. In this Essay, applications of mesoporous materials are reviewed in electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. The synthesis, structure, and properties of mesoporous materials and their performance in rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and electrolyzers are discussed, providing practical details and enlightening comments on the construction of high‐performance mesoporous electrodes. Lastly, the research challenges and perspectives on mesoporous materials for the future development of energy conversion and storage devices are assessed.

Abstract:The biggest concern of the decade is to find a way to power the future in the most ecofriendly and green manner, owing to current energy crisis and environmental pollution. A major side effect of conventional technological advancements is the inability to naturally digest and decompose the substances human society has created. This review summarizes green energy conversion and storage devices with a particular focus on recent advancements in emerging technologies. Technical innovations in energy‐related materials, device structures, and new applications are discussed. Furthermore, hybrid energy and self‐charging power systems are discussed in conjunction with recent and future research directions. The multifunctional applications of these energy systems are also emphasized. It is expected that this review will provide a platform to understand the current landmarks and promote further research to broaden the utility of energy devices. This review presents recent progress on emerging methods for green energy conversion, storage, and power systems. A broad spectrum from advisable materials, novel device designs to performance optimization even in harsh environments is covered. Multifunctional utilization of some existing energy technologies is discussed to solve real life problems. This review is anticipated to be of great importance for the design and improvement of future energy technologies.

Abstract:One of the greatest challenges facing our world today is climate change, brought about by the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in large part due to the massive use of fossil fuels to satisfy our society's ever-increasing energy demands. The transition to clean energy resources requires the development of new, efficient, and sustainable technologies for energy conversion and storage. Several low carbon energy resources will contribute to tomorrow's energy supply landscape, including solar, wind, and tidal power, yet rechargeable batteries will likely remain the dominant technology for storing this energy and using it in an economic and efficient manner for decades to come. For instance, the gradual replacement of internal combustion engine vehicles powered by petroleum or diesel by electric vehicles and photovoltaic power charging stations is one way we can lessen our reliance on fossil fuels. Improving the performance of energy storage and conversion devices toward higher energy and power density, and greater efficiency, durability, and safety, hinges on the development of new materials and processes, specifically, on tuning the properties of the component materials by modulating their crystal structure and microstructure, and on optimizing materials processing and device assembly protocols. Today, there is a clear need for a dedicated publication platform to cover high-impact and multidisciplinary scientific contributions that will pave the way to the next generation of energy conversion and storage devices. We expect this journal to grow in the coming years, as part of the fourth industrial revolution featuring the efficient use of renewable energies, in addition to navigating a digital world and accelerated by the current pandemic.

Abstract:Advanced and sustainable energy storage technologies with tailorable electrochemically active materials platform are the present research dominancy toward an urgent global need for electrical vehicles and portable electronics. Moreover, intensive efforts are given to screen the widely available low-cost materials with a focus to achieve superior electrochemical performance for the fabrication of energy storage devices. Transition metal-based sulfides have prodigious technological credibility due to their compositional- and morphological-based tunable electrochemical properties. Here the significant advances and present state-of-the-art of such assured materials in different energy storage devices are discussed. Assessment of the intensive work invested in the progress of transition metals such as V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn Mo, and W based sulfides along with their structural/compositional engineering and addressable aspects for electrochemical performance enhancement are highlighted. Additionally, discussions on critical strategies for decisive mechanistic and kinetic views for charge storage phenomena with key challenges, such as volume expansions, low stability, and sluggish kinetics, are discussed. Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage (EES) plays a critical role in tackling climate change and the energy crisis, unfortunately it faces several challenges. Unlike conventional electrode materials which are gradually approaching their capacity limit, the emerging atomically thin 2D materials can potentially open up various new possibilities for design and fabrication of novel EES devices. The studies in this area to date have laid the groundwork in understanding fundamental physics and chemistry of 2D materials, enabling a toolbox of engineering strategies to be used to improve the EES performance. This report reviews recent progress in engineering 2D materials for EES applications. Both theoretical and experimental investigations in this area are summarized, and pathways toward improved EES performance and their novel applications are highlighted based on appropriate integration of promising strategies such as the surface activation, chemical doping, phase engineering, and hybrid structures.

Abstract:Large‐scale electrical energy storage has become more important than ever for reducing fossil energy consumption in transportation and for the widespread deployment of intermittent renewable energy in electric grid. However, significant challenges exist for its applications. Here, the status and challenges are reviewed from the perspective of materials science and materials chemistry in electrochemical energy storage technologies, such as Li‐ion batteries, sodium (sulfur and metal halide) batteries, Pb‐acid battery, redox flow batteries, and supercapacitors. Perspectives and approaches are introduced for emerging battery designs and new chemistry combinations to reduce the cost of energy storage devices. The different applications of energy storage, different technologies, and the cost requirements from the kilowatt to gigawatt scale are compared. Li‐ion batteries have attracted attention for transportation storage, while many other technologies are considered for stationary applications.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems have received remarkable attention during the past decades because of the high demand of the world energy consumption. Various materials along with the structure designs have been utilized to enhance the overall performance. Among them, nanofibers have been widely explored due to their unique properties (i.e., high surface area, multi-functionality, high porosity, outstanding flexibility, etc.) during the past few decades. Meanwhile, electrospinning, considered a simple and low-cost approach, has attracted tremendous attention because those nanofibrous materials with functional properties prepared by this unique technique can address numerous issues, especially in energy fields. This paper aims to comprehensively review the latest advances in developing advanced electrospun nanofibers for electrochemical devices. It starts with a brief introduction to the advantages of the electrospinning technique. It highlights ongoing research activities, followed by the history of electrospinning, the principle of electrospinning, and the uniqueness of electrospun nanofibers. Afterward, state-of-the-art developments for their applications in electrochemical devices, including but not limited to rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, solar cells, hydrogen storage, etc., are discussed in detail. A future vision regarding challenges and solutions is proposed at the end. This review aims to provide an extensive and comprehensive reference to apply functional electrospun nanofibers in energy areas.

Abstract:Lithium (Li)-ion batteries have revolutionized our daily life towards wireless and clean style and the demand for batteries with higher energy density and better safety is highly required. The next-generation batteries with innovatory chemistry, material, and engineering breakthroughs are in strong pursuit currently. Herein, the key historical developments of practical electrode materials in Li-ion batteries are summarized as the cornerstone for the innovation of next-generation batteries. In addition, the emerging electrode materials for next-generation batteries are discussed revolving challenges and potential strategies. Finally, the future scenario of high-energy-density rechargeable batteries is presented. The combination of theory and experiment under multiscale are highlighted to promote the development of emerging electrode materials.
