Abstract:Future power grids face various challenges due to a rapidly increasing share of renewable energy resources and increasing interplay with other energy sectors. Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind, solar, energy storage, combined heat and power plants, electric vehicles, and smart loads become prevalent. As shown in Figure 1, it has become an inevitable choice for the energy revolution to develop an integrated energy system that realizes the deep integration of new technologies with distributed energy and diversifies (cold, heat, electricity, gas, etc.) demand. Besides, we are moving towards an integrated energy system on an unprecedented scale. In the continuous development of integrated energy systems, the elements of participation and interaction are becoming more complex. The integration of variable sources and the efficient and synergistic utilization of these energies will be a key focus in the future development. This issue contains ten research articles focusing on modeling and analysis methods for IES, advanced technologies for DERs and microgrid, active distribution network, impact of DERs interconnection on the distribution network, etc. The paper by Cao et al. proposed the concept of shared ESS (Shared-ESS) for microgrid owner/ operator and applied it to the economic optimal dispatch of a microgrid cluster. The microgrids can achieve the peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction among each other with the use of the Shared-ESS, which significantly improves the energy utilization efficiency. The numerical analysis shows that the Shared-ESS can significantly reduce the energy bills of microgrid owner/operator, shift the usage of energy during peak time, and facilitate the renewable energy consumption. The orderly deregulation of planned electricity generation and consumption is an important measure for electricity market reform in several countries. Under the plan-market double-track mechanism (PMDM) implemented, a modified linear bidding function of generation companies was first proposed by He et al., and the unified clearing price of unilateral generation market is determined accordingly. Simulations based on data from a provincial electricity market in China illustrate that the market power can be reduced through a reasonable proportion of planned electricity designed by the power exchange. The paper by Chen et al. discusses a passive sliding mode control strategy of MMC-UPFC to achieve the advantages of both the passive controller and sliding mode controller. An unbalanced grid treatment strategy is also presented with the series side of MMC-UPFC. Abstract:C ITIES and urban regions are becoming smarter thanks to the recent developments of digital technologies, smart control, data analytics, and optimization concepts. A smart city is equipped with different electronic elements employed by several applications. The utilization of the aforementioned technologies and approaches can furnish intelligent management of energy distribution and consumption in heterogeneous circumstances. Intelligent nodes have some abilities, such as sensing and networking, which raise the possibility of optimal scheduling of energy suppliers. Digitalization can result in the generation of some services that have an interaction with the environment. Hence, it could introduce some opportunities for contextualization and geoawareness. Furthermore, collective intelligence will improve the processes of decision making and empower the citizens. One of the main features of a smart city is due to its ability of favoring customers’ responsiveness and efficiency decisions. A broad range of challenging problems and issues related to the area of smart energy cities and regions is, therefore, being addressed within this Special Section on “Methods and Systems for a Smart Energy City” of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS. Recent research and technology development trends, methods, and corresponding results are being covered by the included contributions of this Special Section, which is technically supported by the Technical Committee on Smart Grids (TC-SG) of the IEEE INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS SOCIETY. In a strict peer-review process supported by highly reputed international experts from the domain, finally, 27 excellent contributions out of around 60 submissions have been selected for publication in this Special Section. They address a wide range of challenging and interesting topics in the domain of smart energy cities, which can be mainly grouped into six clusters related to the following: 1) energy management and optimization problems; 2) demand response approaches; 3) energy market concepts; 4) microgrid control; 5) energy storage systems applications; 6) metering and sensor technology. Table I provides a brief overview of the assignment of the papers to the aforementioned clusters. In the following, the main content and contributions of these papers are briefly summarized in order to give the readers guidance through the content of this Special Issue. Abstract:The power system worldwide is currently undergoing a rapid and transformative shift driven by decarbonization and digitization. The global goal of decarbonization in response to climate change has driven the evolution of smart grids toward high, or even 100%, renewable penetration. Meanwhile, traditional electricity consumers are transforming into prosumers who simultaneously consume and produce electricity. More flexible resource types continue to emerge and rise on the demand side. They have emerged as highly effective solutions to integrate and coordinate a diverse range of distributed energy resources that offer increased resilience, flexibility, and sustainability during the decarbonization of power systems.

Abstract:Energy becoming more and more crucial and critical in the civilized populations and locates itself as one of the major requirements of living standards. Obtaining the energy from fossil fuels still is one of the common sources of energy production; however, there is a common understanding of increasing the potential use of renewables, carbon capture and storage, energy efficiency and intelligence and smart applications for collecting, distributing and transmission of the energy between the supply and demand locations. Those applications and generating the new policies, roadmaps in order to make an energy revolution and increase the usage of low-carbon energy technologies targeting the decrease of energy related emissions. In this chapter, the authors explains the common issues about smart grid and demand side management and possible use artificial intelligence and metaheuristic algorithms for smart grid and demand side management optimization and scheduling.

Abstract:The integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into the smart grid through digitalization has transformed the power grid into a more decentralized system, enhancing energy efficiency and resilience during significant catastrophes. However, the integration of a large number of DERs into the transmission and distribution networks poses reliability challenges due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. To tackle this, smart grids have been using advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices for over two decades to improve grid observability and enable near-real-time forecasting of continent-wide anomalies. Cloud-edge-end orchestrated computing can achieve hierarchical management and innovative operational strategies, such as multi-level control and optimization of all-grid-level DERs, voltage and frequency regulation using phasor measurement units (PMU), and special protection schemes (SPS) to detect and prevent potential faults or large-scale cyber-attacks.

Abstract:Economic and environmental constraints, as well as technological advancements, are reshaping the traditional view of power distribution systems. In a future distribution grid, as the number of inverter- and converter-based devices increases to more than hundreds of thousands, it is rather intuitive that the current state-of-the-art technical solutions and industry practices will no longer be effective. While tremendous progress has been made in advancing smart grid solutions, not much attention has been paid to bridging the gap between two traditionally disjointed research areas—power systems (especially distribution systems) and power electronics—that will ultimately facilitate the vision of 100% penetration of power-electronics-based distributed energy resources coming to fruition. There is a growing interest in the concepts of power electronics-enabled power systems around the world. This Special Section invites a broad spectrum of contributors (e.g., academics, researchers, engineers, consultants, market regulators and system operators, key policymakers) to define and develop the interdisciplinary technical approaches collectively. Although there are many technical challenges associated with making this vision a reality, policy, economic, and workforce issues also play a significant role. This Special Section hence concentrates on discussing various relevant topics associated with how to accommodate extremely high levels of power-electronics-based distributed energy resources to promote economic efficiency; improve social welfare; reduce energy cost; support plug-and-play of distributed renewable energy; and improve the capability, adaptability, scalability, resiliency, safety, security, and usability that our electric power distribution infrastructure can provide. The articles are authored by a diverse group of experts from academics, industry, and national laboratories around the world ( Fig. 1 ). The guest editorial board received 120+ abstract submissions and invited 65 of them for full-paper submissions. After two-round rigorous reviews, 23 papers have been accepted for final publication. It is worth noting that this Special Section places an emphasis on addressing the mutual research interests of academics and industry. Hence, interdisciplinary research and real-world-problem-driven research topics are of particular relevance to this Special Section. The guest editorial board and IEEE PES leadership made tremendous efforts to attract authors from the industry. All the papers have gone through the same review criteria. Approximately 35% of the accepted papers are led or co-led by industry experts.

Abstract:With the increasing integration of renewable energies, power electronic devices and flexible loads, modern power systems are becoming more sophisticated and facing higher uncertainty. Traditional model-based methods cannot fully satisfy the analysis and control requirements of modern power systems duo to its complexity and uncertainty. At the same time, with the deployment of smart meters and advanced sensors, an unprecedented amount of data is generated by the power systems all the time. The generated data have great value and can make up for the deficiency of the traditional physical model based approaches. Driven by data, artificial intelligence can directly learn from data, and needs no simplifications and/or assumptions of the physical model. Great success has been achieved in the fields of artificial intelligence in recent years, bringing new opportunities of applying the state-of-the-art machine learning technologies to power systems. This special section focusses on some of the emerging technologies to solve existing challenges and solutions for the application of artificial intelligence in modern power systems. Thirteen articles included in this special section are summarized as follows: In the paper entitled "Reinforcement Learning and Its Applications in Modern Power and Energy Systems: A Review", the authors make a comprehensive review of applications of reinforcement learning in modern power and energy system. The basic ideas and various types of methods of reinforcement learning, deep reinforcement learning and multiagent deep reinforcement learning algorithms are first illustrated, respectively. Then their applications for the optimization of smart power and energy distribution grid, demand side management, electricity market and operational control are discussed in detailed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of reinforcement learning in modern power and energy system are presented.

Abstract:The integration of widely fluctuating distributed generation (such as photovoltaic panels, wind power, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems) puts the stability of power technologies and distribution structures in jeopardy. However, the fundamental reason is that the electrical supply and demand ratio may not be balanced. An excess or scarcity of electricity in the production or consumption of energy can disrupt the system and cause serious difficulties such as voltage drops/rises and, in extreme cases, power outages. Energy management systems can efficiently increase the balance between supply and demand while reducing peak load during unscheduled periods. The energy management system can handle distributing or exchanging energy among the many energy resources available and economically supplying loads in a stable, safe, and effective manner under all power grid operating situations. This article examines the energy control system’s structure, goals, benefits, and challenges through an in-depth investigation of the various stakeholders and participants involved in this system. This review provides a detailed essential analysis of the operation of several programs used inside the power management system, such as demand response, demand management, and energy quality management. It also includes a summary of the smart grid’s functionalities, features, and related techniques and has discovered research gaps, challenges, and issues. Furthermore, in this article, the authors review the literature on the enabling technologies of smart grid and investigate the energy management system, which is among one of the major emerging technologies and quantifications of the various uncertainty techniques. In this paper, the authors also discussed the comprehensive review of researchers’ efforts and contributions to the smart energy management system in the smart grid. It also compares and evaluates the key optimization approaches utilized to achieve the remarkable aims of energy management structures while also fulfilling a variety of constraints. This comprehensive review will be very beneficial for the new researchers, and it would be a great contribution to the research community.

Abstract:The aim of this special issue was to collect from academic and industrial players, tutorials and surveys related to the latest smart grid and energy related technologies and architectures. Contributions on major developments and updates on smart grid systems are considered. We received a total of 15 submissions from which five were finally accepted for this special issue. The papers span from smart grid communications to building energy efficiency, smart metering, information management, and co-simulation of power and communication systems. Each of the five article is briefly summarized.
