Abstract:Multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3, BFO) is one of the most promising high-temperature ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials due to a high Curie temperature (TC ∼ 825 °C) if the enhancement of ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity can be realized. Unfortunately, it is difficult to adequately pole BFO ceramics due to a high coercive field as well as a high leakage current. Here we investigated the defect dipole-induced poling characteristics and the ferroelectric properties of four kinds of A or/and B-doped BFO ceramics (i.e. BiFeO3, Bi0.95Sm0.05FeO3, BiFe0.95Sc0.05O3, and Bi0.95Sm0.05Fe0.95Sc0.05O3) using a modified quenching technique. The piezoelectric effect is determined by the poling condition, and moreover the poling behavior is strongly dependent on the ion substitution types of BFO ceramics. An enhanced piezoelectric property (d33 = 46–51 pC N−1) can be attained without the involvement of a phase boundary. Specifically, the doping with Sm (Bi0.95Sm0.05FeO3) can cause an obvious threshold during poling, and additionally Bi0.95Sm0.05FeO3 and Bi0.95Sm0.05Fe0.95Sc0.05O3 components can be curiously adequately poled below the coercive field at the poling temperature of 100 °C. In addition, the saturated P–E loops with an obvious internal bias field (Ei) were observed, where Ei was induced by defect dipoles , and then defect dipoles may be decoupled at 120 °C and 6 kV mm−1 (DC field), resulting in a cyclical poling current. It is of great interest to note that an enhanced remanent polarization (2Pr ∼ 50–60 μC cm−2) of the ceramics is obtained, and especially the internal bias fields can be alleviated by AC-cycling or decreasing the measurement frequency. Finally, we believe that our research will have a significant importance in the improvement of piezoelectricity of BFO-based ceramics.
Large electric‐field‐induced strain and enhanced piezoelectric constant in CuO‐modified BiFeO3‐BaTiO3 ceramics

Abstract:In this work, we fabricated the (1-x)BiFeO3-xBaTiO(3)+y parts per thousand mol CuO ceramics by the modified thermal quenching technique. The pure perovskite phase was formed and a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) was observed in the ceramics with x=0.30-0.33. The addition of CuO can significantly enhance the density of the BiFeO3-BaTiO3 material. Importantly, an enhanced piezoelectric constant (d(33)=165 pC/N), a large electric-field-induced strain (S=0.54%: peak to peak strain) and a large piezoelectric actuator constant (d(33)*=449pm/V) together with a high Curie temperature (T-C) of 503 degrees C were observed in the ceramics with x=0.30 and y=5. As a result, the enhanced piezoelectricity and large electric-field-induced strain could significantly stimulate further researches in BFO-based ceramics.

Abstract:The impact of defects on the performance of piezoelectric materials has been a topic of considerable debate, due to the competing actions of the deteriorating effect of the defects themselves on the ceramic resistance and the positive effect on the piezoelectric performance resulting from the defect polarization. In order to probe its combined influence on piezoelectric properties, here, we designed BiFeO3 (BF)-based ceramics with different defect concentrations. It has been demonstrated that the incorporation of an appropriate concentration of defects into ceramics can effectively enhance their piezoelectric properties while maintaining their insulating properties. During the polarization process, both the intrinsic polarization and defect dipoles are oriented along the direction of the electric field. This occurs in the presence of a high temperature environment as well as an applied electric field, which results in a complementary enhancement of the macroscopic ferro- and piezoelectric properties. Consequently, the piezoelectric performance of BF-BT-BKT ceramics is achieved (d33 = 203 ± 5 pC/N, TC = 502 °C, kp = 33.05%). This work provides a framework for understanding the intrinsic structural mechanism of bismuth ferrate.
Larger Polarization and Weak Ferromagnetism in Quenched Bifeo3 Ceramics with A Distorted Rhombohedral Crystal Structure

Abstract:Single-phase insulating BiFeO3 ceramics have been synthesized by a simple but effective method that conventional solid state reaction is followed immediately by quenching processing. At room temperature, the ceramics show a metastable, distorted rhombohedral phase and the refined structure parameters are presented based on x-ray diffraction. It is revealed that the formations of Fe2+ and oxygen deficiency are greatly suppressed by the quenching processing. A well-saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loop with a large remnant polarization (2Pr=23.5μC∕cm2) is observed with an applied field of 155kV∕cm. Temperature-dependent magnetic property is investigated and weak ferromagnetism with a remnant magnetization of 4×10−6μB∕Fe at 10K is established. These results may have implications for further studies on multiferroics.

Abstract:In this work, the electric and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) ceramics are modulated by changing the defect-dipoles using different Bi2O3 contents, where excessive Bi2O3 gives rise to the formation of iron (VFe) and oxygen (VO) vacancies and Bi2O3 deficiency mainly leads to the formation of bismuth (VBi) and oxygen vacancies (VO). It is of great interest to note that a rather low leakage current density can be achieved in both Bi2O3 deficient and excessive ceramics. We also find that a moderate level of Bi2O3 deficiency (<9%) has little influence on d33. Surprisingly, Bi2O3 excess, widely used for fabricating BFO ceramics with better properties in the past, cannot improve d33. An enhanced piezoelectricity (d33=49–51 pC/N) can be obtained in the BFO ceramics with a wide Bi2O3 content range (i.e., x=−0.09–0.09). A large remanent polarization (2Pr~90–119μC/cm2) and a tunable magnetization (Mr=0.022–0.038emu/g and Hc=0.87–4.04kOe) are achieved in BFO ceramics with x=−0.15–0.15. These defect-dipoles induced by Bi2O3 deficiency or excess can well modulate the electric and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 ceramics.

Abstract:The as-prepared BiFeO3 ceramic shows a piezoelectric d(33) coefficient of -14pC/N, that is, an obvious ferroelectric self-poling phenomenon. The temperature gradient between the two surfaces of BiFeO3 ceramic was intentionally enlarged when BiFeO3 was prepared with a rapid liquid sintering method. This temperature gradient and the corresponding thermal strain can introduce defect dipoles through separating bismuth vacancies from oxygen vacancies. A mass of these dipoles introduce a macroscopic internal electric field (E-in) which downward poles BiFeO3 ceramic during its cooling down process. As expected, an E-in of >10kV/cm is confirmed by the asymmetrical polarization/strain versus electric field curves.

Abstract:Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3)-based materials are multiferroic materials widely studied. This study reports that strong ferroelectricity and enhanced magnetic performance are simultaneously obtained in the quenched (1−x)BiFeO3−xBaTiO3 (BFBT100x, x = 0.2 and 0.3) ceramics. Quenching treatment can reduce the amount of defects and Fe2+ ions and make the defect dipole in a random state, which is conducive to improving the ferroelectricity and magnetism. Compared with the conventional sintered samples, the quenched ceramics have higher remnant and saturation polarization. As for magnetism, the coercive field (Hc) of the quenched ceramics is smaller and the quenching treatment can increase the maximum magnetization by up to 15%.
Large electric field-induced strain in BiFeO3-based ceramics by tuning defect dipoles and phase structure

Abstract:High-performance lead-free piezoelectric materials with high Curie temperature can be used as substitutes for lead-based piezoelectric components to address serious environmental issues. In our works, 0.7Bi1.05Fe+3(1−x)Fe2+xO3−δ– 0.3BaTiO3 (BF–BT–xFe2+) ceramics, which demonstrate outstanding large-signal piezoelectric coefficient of d33* = 510 p.m./V and electric field-induced bipolar strain of Δsp−p = 0.34% (peak-to-peak) at 50 kV/cm. Meanwhile, optimal remanent polarization of Pr = 55.8 μC/cm2, piezoelectric coefficient of d33 = 178 pC/N, and Curie temperature of Tc = 485 °C are achieved at x = 0.07. Of particular interesting the preferred strain is observed in BF–BT–xFe2+ ceramics with major pseudo-cubic phase. Results showed that prior electric properties are derived from synergistic effect of defect dipoles and phase structure together with non-180° domain switch. The defect dipole builds an internal electric field that favors ferroelectric domain formation and polarization. In addition, the formation of defect breaks the geometry symmetry of cubic structure.

Abstract:The effects of quenching on the structural, electrical, dielectric, ferroelectric (FE), and piezoelectric properties are investigated systematically in the 0.85BiFe1-xCrxO3-0.15BaTi1-xMnxO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.03) ceramics. Optimal piezoelectricity and FE Curie temperature are obtained through optimized quenching rate and temperature. Quenching effect on piezoelectricity is especially significant for the samples near morphotropic phase boundaries (MPB), which can be ascribed to quenching-induced changes in phase ratio (rhombohedral and tetragonal phase) and domain structure/defect dipole orientation. Moreover, a new poling method, that is, cooling the sample at a constant dc current across FE TC, is established to improve the piezoelectricity. This work not only reveals the possible mechanism of quenching effect on the improved piezoelectricity in the BFO-based piezoceramics (especially near the MPB) but also suggests an electric current poling strategy for improving piezoelectricity by suppressing the defect dipole effects in BFO-based and even other piezoelectrics.

Abstract:Multiferroic BiFeO3 (bismuth ferrite, BFO) ceramics were sintered using a rapid heating and quenching technique in an atmosphere of argon or oxygen. The resulting ceramics were phase pure with the space group R3c. BFO ceramics sintered under an argon atmosphere contained more oxygen vacancies and Fe2+ ions compared with those sintered under an oxygen atmosphere, which resulted in high dielectric loss and large dielectric dispersion. It confirms that the unavoidable Fe2+ ions may play a fundamental role in these special materials, such as in the evaporation of the Bi component and valence change of the Fe component. This work also discusses the dielectric response mechanism in BFO ceramics.

Abstract:For high-power on-resonant piezoelectric applications, piezoelectric materials with high piezoelectric coefficient (d 33) and mechanical quality factor (Q m) are in high demand. However, previous work has shown that the d 33 and Q m are generally inversely proportional, implying that it is difficult to improve these properties simultaneously. Here we report the simultaneous enhancement of d 33 and Q m in (Mn, Zr) co-doped BaTiO3 (BT-xMn-yZr) ceramics. Compared with pure BaTiO3 ceramics, the piezoelectric coefficient (d 33) of BT-0.5%Mn-5%Zr ceramic is increased from 190 pC/N to 321 pC/N, and the Q m is increased from 290 to 513. Furthermore, the Q m of BT-1%Mn-5%Zr ceramic reaches 1470, and the d 33 is 248 pC/N. When both d 33 and Q m are considered, the obtained properties outperform commercial hard Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 and other typical lead-free ferroelectric ceramics. The experimental results show that the enhanced d 33 and Q m of these ceramics originate from the synergistic effect of defect engineering-induced domain configuration effect and pinning effect. This work provides insights into the design of high-performance high-power lead-free ferroelectric materials.

Reorientation of Defect Dipoles in Ferroelectric Ceramics

Abstract:We investigate the frequency, temperature, tetragonality and quenched temperature dependences of the hysteresis loops in Pb[(Zr0.52Ti0.48)(0.95)(Mn1/3Nb2/3)(0.05)]O-3 (PMnN-PZT) ceramics. It has been demonstrated that the polarization-field hysteresis curves show "pinched" shapes when tested at room temperature, higher frequency or using the large-tetragonality specimen. While normal square-like loops are observed at 200 degrees C and 0.01 Hz or using the small-tetragonality one. Meanwhile, close relations between the P-E loops and the applied frequency, temperature or tetragonality reveal that there exists a typical relaxation time corresponding to the reorientation of the defect dipoles. It can be seen further from the quenched temperature dependences of the loops that the reorientation of the defect dipoles may influence the pinching. Compared to the intrinsic depinning procedure induced by changes of the distribution of defect dipoles, we provide new evidence for extrinsic depinning mechanism of the defect dipoles in the ferroelectric ceramics.

Abstract:The crystal structures, piezoelectric property, dielectric transition and electric-field-induced changes in the structures and dielectric constant of (0.8−x)PbTiO3–xBiFeO3–0.2BaZrO3 (0.3 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) ceramics near the morphotropic phase boundary have been studied. All the ceramics could be indexed on the base of a tetragonal symmetry. The increasing concentration of BiFeO3 induces a reduction in the c/a ratio, ranged from 1.022 for x = 0.3 to 1.007 for x = 0.4. Accordingly, the piezoelectric coefficient (d33) reaches a maximum value at x = 0.34 (d33, 138 pC/N). A relaxor-type dielectric anomaly could be found for all the ceramics. The temperature of the maximum dielectric constant (T m) at 1 MHz and the degree of the diffuseness for the dielectric anomaly (δ) increase with BiFeO3 concentration, from 544 and 96 K for x = 0.3 to 574 and 154 K for x = 0.4. After poling, the ceramic for x = 0.34 shows an increase in the c/a ratio and an obvious decrease in the dielectric constant.
Enhanced piezoelectricity in 0.7BiFeO3-0.3BaTiO3 lead-free ceramics: Distinct effect of poling engineering

Abstract:BiFeO3 BaTiO3 based ceramics are considered to be the most promising lead-free piezoelectric ceramics due to their large piezoelectric response and high Curie temperature. Since the piezoelectric response of piezoelectric ceramics just appears after poling engineering, in this work, the domain evolution and microscopic piezoresponse were observed in-situ using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and switching spectroscopy piezoresponse force microscopy (SS-PFM), which can effectively study the local switching characteristics of ferroelectric materials especially at the nanoscale. The new domain nucleation preferentially forms at the boundary of the relative polarization region and expands laterally with the increase of bias voltage and temperature. The maximum piezoresponse (R s), remnant piezoresponse (R rem), maximum displacement (D max), and negative displacement (D neg) at 45 V and 120 °C reach 122, 69, 127 pm, and 75 pm, respectively. Due to the distinct effect of poling engineering in full domain switching, the corresponding d 33 at 50 kV/cm and 120 °C reaches a maximum of 205 pC/N, which is nearly twice as high as that at room temperature. Studying the evolution of ferroelectric domains in the poling engineering of BiFeO3 BaTiO3 ceramics provides an insight into the relationship between domain structure and piezoelectric response, which has implications for other piezoelectric ceramics as well.

Oxygen vacancies with a cubic symmetry are preserved in the quenched PSZT-Fe ceramics, rendering them robust ferroelectric behaviors. In the aged PSZT-Fe polycrystals, defect dipole between Fe dopant and oxygen vacancy has the same orientation with spontaneous polarization P S , which enables the reversible domain switching and hence leads to the emergence of pinched polarization hysteresis and recoverable strain effect. And the defect dipoles can be gradually disrupted by bipolar electric field cycling, once again endowing the aged materials with representative ferroelectric properties. For the poled PSZT-Fe polycrystals, the defect dipoles are reoriented to be parallel to the applied poling field, and an internal bias field aligning along the same direction emerges simultaneously, being responsible for asymmetric hysteresis loops.

Abstract:Nanoscale ferroelectric behaviour has been investigated in epitaxial BaZrO3 thin films grown in an oxygen deficient environment. Though centrosymmetric in nature, prominent ferroelectric polar states were observed via Piezo Force Microscopy (PFM), with polarization switching achieved when oppositely poled. Absence of intrinsic polar directions annul the conventional root causes for ferroelectricity like structural asymmetry and strain, rather attributes the nanoscale polar orders observed, to defect dipoles originated from oxygen vacancies introduced during the film growth. Electrostatic Force Microscopy (EFM) exhibiting inhomogeneous distribution of surface potential confirms the accumulation of oxygen vacancies contributing towards the measured polarizations.

Abstract:Mn-doped 0.49 Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.51 Pb(Hf0.3Ti0.7)O-3 (abbreviated PNN-PHT) ceramics were prepared by solid-phase reaction method. The influence of defect dipoles on various properties was systematically studied. Results showed that Mn doping significantly improved mechanical quality factor Q(m) of PNN-PHT ceramics and greatly reduced dielectric loss, while Curie temperature T-c was also slightly increased. After 10(5) electric field cycles, Mn doped PNN-PHT ceramic showed excellent fatigue property. Based on ferroelectric and dielectric properties of samples, the reason for defect dipole and internal mechanism of its influence on piezoelectric properties were elucidated. Finally, novel ceramic 0.75 mol% Mn-doped PNN-PHT with excellent performance was obtained (d(33)similar to 750 pC/N, k(p)similar to 0.55, Q(m)similar to 384 and tan delta similar to 0.59%). Therefore, results of this work suggest that these ceramics may be potential candidates for piezoelectric actuators and high-power devices.
Room-Temperature Saturated Ferroelectric Polarization In Bifeo3 Ceramics Synthesized By Rapid Liquid Phase Sintering

Abstract:Single-phased ferroelectromagnet BiFeO3 ceramics with high resistivity were synthesized by a rapid liquid phase sintering technique. Saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed at room temperature in the ceramics sintered at 880 degreesC for 450 s. The spontaneous polarization, remnant polarization, and the coercive field are 8.9 muC/cm(2), 4.0 muC/cm(2), and 39 kV/cm, respectively, under an applied field of 100 kV/cm. It is proposed that the formation of Fe2+ and an oxygen deficiency leading to the higher leakage can be greatly suppressed by the very high heating rate, short sintering period, and liquid phase sintering technique. The latter was also found effective in increasing the density of the ceramics. The sintering technique developed in this work is expected to be useful in synthesizing other ceramics from multivalent or volatile starting materials. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:BiFeO3 (BFO) based ferroelectric solid solutions attract long-lasting research interests due to their multi-functionalities including electric/multiferroic/energy-storage properties. However, achievement of large ferroelectric polarization is still highly challenging in BFO based bulk ceramics due to large leakage. In this work, the structure and electrical properties of rare earth Nd- and PbTiO3 co-modified BFO ceramics have been explored. Based on high temperature in-situ X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurements, a preliminary ferroelectric phase diagram is established, depicting the morphotropic phase boundaries (MPB) and a critical temperature that cannot be correlated to any macroscopic phase transition. The effects of rare earth substitution on structure evolution have been investigated by comparing the results in this work and literature. The accomplishment of ferroelectric switching with giant ferroelectric polarization above 65 μC/cm2 is successfully achieved without resorting to quenching treatment. The MPB compositions demonstrate the maximum piezoelectric coefficients and the lowest coercive field, suggesting the “softening” effects. The domain evolutions suggest two coexisting phases distribute separately in different grains in MPB composition.
