Abstract:In this paper, pulse laser cleaning and angle grinder polishing were used to clean the surface rust of carbon steel, and the cleaning effects of different cleaning methods for carbon steel surface rust were studied. The change of the micro-region morphology and element composition of the cleaned surface was analyzed. Comparative experiments were conducted on the corrosion resistance and paint anticorrosion ability of cleaned metal surfaces. Through comparison and analysis, the use of laser cleaning technology can improve the surface cleanliness and corrosion resistance of metals, reduce maintenance times, and extend service life. Laser cleaning machines with a power of 100 W or above can effectively perform precision cleaning and can be widely promoted in the field of power systems.

Abstract:Herein, facile and commercial nanosecond laser treatment was utilized to fabricate biomimetic liquid-infused slippery surface on carbon steel, and its self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, anti-frosting and tribological properties were systematically analyzed. The SEM and three-dimensional morphology analysis results revealed that the laser treatment was effective in producing extreme rough, porous and multilevel surface morphology on steel substrate. After fluorination process and subsequent oil infusion, slippery surface was successfully created. Through wetting analysis, it was found that as-prepared slippery surface showed hydrophobic property with a low contact angle hysteresis, indicating that a uniform and smooth oil layer had been created. Owing to its excellent anti-wetting and insulator effects to liquid medium, slippery surface was proven to behave superior self-cleaning and anti-corrosion performances. Furthermore, slippery surface could also effectively postpone the moisture condensation, which hence endowed steel substrate with enhanced anti-frosting property. Compared with base steel, slippery surface also showed improved friction-reducing and anti-wear performances due to the lubricating effect of oil layer. Based on these results, it could expect that the prepared slippery surface is promising to expand the practical application of traditional carbon steel materials.

Abstract:Abstract Traditional cleaning processes may be banned in the near future because of the hazards they pose to the environment. In this study, a water jet was used to clean grease residues from steel wires for the first time. The EDS and SEM results of the steel wire rope surfaces and supplementary water jet impact experiments on galvanized steel plates revealed that when the pressure was lower than 50 MPa and the traverse speed was higher than 600 mm/min, the water jet caused minimal damage to the coating. When the pressure was 5 MPa, the cleaning ratio was between 45 and 60%, and the level of cleaning increased with increasing pressure. Two proposed concepts of exposure ratio and nonexposed area were applied to quantitatively analyze the theoretical upper and lower limits for grease that could be cleaned from two typical structures. The results showed that the lower and upper cleaning limits for structure 7 × 3 were 38.1% and 83.3%, while the lower and upper limits for structure 1 × 3 + 5 × 7 were 35.5% and 59.2%, respectively. This result explains why the grease content of structure 7 × 3 was lower than that of structure 1 × 3 + 5 × 7 after cleaning. In addition, the adhesion test results showed that adhesion to the two kinds of steel wire ropes after cleaning was increased by 126% and 145.71%, respectively, which means that additional processes for improving adhesion could be omitted after using a water jet for cleaning. This is an advantage that traditional cleaning processes do not offer.

This paper introduces the application of laser cleaning technology in rust removal of iron and steel, summarizes the physical mechanism of laser cleaning, and puts forward the condition of synchronous cleaning and passivation of floating rust layer and the method of double beam wet cleaning and passivation. In addition, a cleaning method and device for wet cleaning and de-rusting with two beams is proposed in this paper.

Abstract:To improve the laser cleaning efficiency of Q235 carbon steel, an imaging analysis-based intelligent technique is proposed. Both offline and online computations are designed. Regarding the offline procedure, first, the corrosion images are accumulated to compute the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and the concave-convex region features. Second, different laser cleanings are performed to obtain various cleaned images. Third, a new cleaning performance evaluation method is developed: a metal color difference feature and a dynamic weight dispatch (DWD) corrosion texture are computed. Finally, a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-support vector machine (SVM) is utilized to forecast the laser process parameters. The corresponding laser parameters include power, linear velocity, and line spacing. For the online computation, after the GLCM and the concave-convex region features are computed, an iterative computation is used to tune the process parameters: the random laser parameters are generated constantly, and the iteration is performed and terminated only if the PSO-SVM output is positive. The experimental results have shown that the cleaning efficiency of this method can be improved, and the qualified rate is 92.5%.

Abstract:In this study, the environmentally friendly nanosecond ultraviolet (UV) laser is an innovatively employed laser cleaning to remove the painting layer from the AH36 steel substrate. The feasibility of UV laser cleaning the painting layer is innovatively proposed and it has been calculated by the model theoretically, followed by elaborating the prominent interaction mechanism of UV laser exactly. The initial cleaning threshold and completely cleaning threshold are 2 J/cm2 and 5 J/cm2, respectively. Afterwards, the UV laser-cleaned surface quality is evaluated by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), optical microscopy (OM), and optical profiler (OP), respectively. The mechanical properties have enhanced dramatically after laser cleaning and characterized by the Vickers hardness tester and universal testing machine. By varying laser fluences (2, 5, 7 J/cm2) during laser cleaning, microstructures registering various sizes of corrugated shaped, craters, and ring shaped could be acquired. In addition, the mechanical properties analysis including rapid melting, quenching, and dislocation density effects illustrates that laser cleaning could effectively increase surface microhardness, tensile strength, and bending strength. Thus, laser cleaning method has emerged as a favorable means to strip painting layer in lieu of traditional methods for marine industry as well as this study could promote the development of laser cleaning in the field of marine engineering.

Abstract:We investigate dry and liquid film-assisted laser cleaning methods and elucidate the influence of laser power on the state of a specimen surface. We also compare the derusting mechanisms of the two methods. The results denote that both the aforementioned methods can effectively eliminate the rusting layer on a sample surface, and the effect of liquid film-assisted laser cleaning at low power is better than that of the dry laser cleaning. The optimized liquid film-assisted laser cleaning process parameters include a laser power of 100 W, pulse frequency of 10 kHz, and pulse width of 30 ns. Under these conditions, the oxygen content of the sample surface is reduced to 3.38%, and the surface roughness is observed to be 3.01 mu m.
Fabricating Robust and Repairable Superhydrophobic Surface on Carbon Steel by Nanosecond Laser Texturing for Corrosion Protection

Abstract:In recent years, fabricating superhydrophobic surface has been deemed to be a promising strategy for metal corrosion protection. Here, a facile and simple nanosecond laser texturing treatment was proposed for constructing superhydrophobic surface on carbon steel. During the machining process, a series of circle-shaped texture patterns with different p/d values were directly fabricated on steel surfaces by nanosecond laser machine. According to the SEM images, the circle-shaped texture pattern showed desirable multimodal structure. When the laser textured steel surface was further chemically modified, it became superhydrophobic. With increasing the p/d value from 1.0 to 1.8, the superhydrophobicity of laser textured superhydrophobic steels deceased continually due to the increased undesirable flat area. Furthermore, the laser textured superhydrophobic steel also showed superb mechanical durability against abrasive damage. Owing to the excellent obstructive effect to corrosive medium, all the superhydrophobic steels displayed superior corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and the superhydrophobic steels with lower p/d values displayed better corrosion resistance. In addition, the laser textured superhydrophobic steel also showed desirable chemical stability and excellent healability even it lost its superhydrophobicity. It was also worth pointing out that a relatively higher drying temperature could further improve the chemical stability and enhances the corrosion protection, which made this process technique more promising and competitive for future practical applications.

Abstract:Steel parts are a kind of high recovery value product for which de-rusting is the primary step in the recycling process. Laser cleaning is a popular and effective de-rusting technique at present. However, the rust on most end-of-life/used parts is very serious, and it is difficult for laser cleaning to remove it all. Therefore, a compound cleaning method was proposed in which molten salt was first used for the pretreatment of rust, followed by laser cleaning. It was shown that the rust layer after pretreatment was much easier to remove with low laser fluence. The cleaning efficiency could be improved by at least 1.34 times, and a cleaner surface without any damage could be obtained. This was the result of the inner-to-outer cleaning effect of molten salt. The penetration into the rust layer and the decomposition of the doped organics caused the contaminant layer to be destroyed in the interior and then peeled off sheet by sheet. The composition and structure analysis indicated that the remaining rust layer was oxidized, and it became looser after molten salt cleaning, which made it easier to clean. The application of molten salt to the cleaning of rusty parts will improve de-rusting efficiency and promote the development of de-rusting techniques effectively. It provides a feasible and high-efficiency choice for de-rusting.

Laser derusting on low carbon steel surface based on coordinated application of machine vision and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:Online monitoring and closed-loop control are essential to accurately remove the rust layer and effectively avoid damage to the substrate. A collaborative utilization of machine vision and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to monitor and control the laser derusting process on Q235B steel is reported. The optimum overlap ratio of 50% is obtained by using machine vision. Monitoring derusting with different thicknesses relies on the Pearson correlation coefficient of the LIBS spectrum between the rust layer and substrate. By developing a collaborative monitoring and control system on LabVIEW, the functions of date acquisition, coordinate transformation, and data calculation are realized to automatically control the laser derusting process on rusty steel in a large area. The cooperation of two methods can achieve high-quality laser derusting with a derusting degree of 99.1%, roughness of 1.45 µm, and extremely low oxygen content on the surface, which verifies the accuracy and practicability of the developed monitoring system. Moreover, the potentiodynamic polarization curves demonstrate that the performance of the corrosion resistance of the Q235B steel is effectively improved after laser derusting.

Abstract:This paper analyzes how removing oxide layer on metal surface by vacuum arc could be a green substitute for the traditional acid-washing and mechanical cleaning technique widely used in the metallurgical industry, which is harmful to the environment. In this paper, the effects of vacuum arc on removing oxide layer on the surface of carbon-steel tubes, which were used as the cathode, is investigated experimentally. External coils are used to generate transverse magnetic field (TMF) driving cathode spots to rotate on tube surface. Experiments are conducted in a vacuum chamber with Ar as the protection gas under different TMF flux densities. Arc images are captured by a high-speed digital camera with an exposure time of 2 . The influence of transverse magnetic flux density on the characteristics of arc and descaling effect is mainly investigated.

Abstract:Aluminum alloys have been widely utilized in automobiles, aircraft, building structures, and high-speed railways industries due to their excellent structural and mechanical properties. Surface oxide film removal prior to aluminum alloy welding and old paint removal prior to repainting aluminum alloy surfaces are critical factors in ensuring the welding quality and service life of aluminum alloy products. Because of its unique advantages, such as environmental protection and precision control, laser-controlled cleaning has great application potential as a surface cleaning technology in removing oxide films and paint layers on aluminum alloy surfaces. In this paper, the mechanism of laser cleaning of oxide films and paint layers on aluminum alloy is discussed. Furthermore, the impact of various processing parameters such as laser beam power, energy density, scanning speed, and so on is analyzed in detail. After laser cleaning, the corrosion resistance, welding performance, adhesive performance, and other properties of the aluminum alloy are optimized. This paper also discusses several real-time detection technologies for laser cleaning. A summary and the development trend are provided at the end of the paper.

Laser cleaning for rust removal on mild steel: An experimental study on surface characteristics

Abstract:Laser cleaning is a relatively new and promising industrial cleaning method. Despite its potential as an alternative to conventional de-rusting methods, very few studies have been done on rust removal. The current study is aimed at investigating experimentally the effect of various important laser parameters on properties of surface after laser processing. Rusted mild steel samples were irradiated with moving pulsed laser beam. Parameters like scan speed, number of passes, etc. were varied and the change in properties such as surface profile, roughness, hardness, etc. of the processed surface were observed along with depth of removal. The depth of removal was found to increase with an increase in laser power, and number of scans but decreased with an increase in scan speed. The surface got discoloured and deformed at lower speeds and higher powers. The surface roughness after processing hardly showed any variation with the initial roughness values before cleaning but depended on the scanning path of the laser. The microhardness values after laser processing varied with path traced by the laser beam which points to microstructure changes in the samples due to laser processing.

Determining Process Parameters for Laser Derusting of Ship Steel Plates

Abstract:Aiming at the requirements of ship steel plate cleaning for green shipbuilding,laser derusting with an optical fiber laser is investigated to obtain the proper process parameters to satisfy the surface quality of derusting.The relationships between groove geometry characteristics and the laser energy density are explored through the single-line laser scanning experiments.The results show that the groove depth,groove width and cross-sectional area of single-line scanning grooves are approximately linearly related to the laser energy density under the condition that the laser energy density comes within the range of 0.5～5 J/mm2.According to the requirements of ship steel plate derusting,a method to determine the process parameters for laser derusting via single line scanning groove geometry characteristics is proposed.Experiments of overlapping scanning laser derusting show that the proposed method is effective in a certain range so that laser derusting can reach cleanliness standards of ship coatings,and can obtain the specified different surface roughnesses.The results demonstrate that laser derusting with a pulsed fibre laser can satisfy the requirements of surface cleaning for ship steel plates.
An environmentally friendly laser cleaning method to remove oceanic micro-biofoulings from AH36 steel substrate and corrosion protection

Abstract:An environmentally friendly nanosecond ultraviolet (UV) laser is employed in laser cleaning micro biofouling from the Fe substrate surface. The morphologies and chemical compositions of the UV laser cleaned surface are examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in conjunction with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), digital ultra-depth-of-field microscope and optical profiler (OP). The results indicate that a laser fluence of 5.30 J/cm2 demonstrates outstanding cleaning effectiveness and a corresponding surface roughness of 4.031 μm. Notably, the initial cleaning threshold and completely clean threshold are 2.75 J/cm2 and 5.30 J/cm2 respectively. The anti-corrosion properties are characterized by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) respectively. In this regard, the UV laser cleaned micro biofouling surface at laser fluence of 5.30 J/cm2 also enhanced the anti-corrosion properties significantly. A novel thermodynamic model of UV laser cleaning of micro biofouling is developed firstly, which illuminates the relationships between the temperature and laser fluence. This investigation not only provides significant insights into the theoretical model and mechanism of UV laser cleaned micro biofouling surface, but also provides a guide for practical oceanic industrial applications.

Abstract:Laser cleaning of rusted surfaces has broad applications in marine ship industrial manufacturing. An ultraviolet nanosecond laser cleaning method was proposed to strip the rust layer from the surface of the AH36 steel to reduce surface roughness and increase corrosion resistance. Multi-pulse laser ablation was established to determine the single-pulse threshold fluence and pulse incubation coefficient of the substrate. Based on the experimental results, the surface cleaned at a fluence of 3.17 J/cm2 has the best combination of corrosion resistance and roughness. The chemical composition and microstructure of the sample surface were measured via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the corrosion resistance of the samples was evaluated with electrochemical measuring. The results showed that the laser-cleaned surface has approximately five times greater corrosion resistance than the rusted surface. The proposed method is an environmentally friendly approach that effectively increases corrosion resistance, which may subsequently extend the service lifetime of a ship. Hence, this study may contribute to the development of laser manufacturing.

Abstract:The surface of metal materials will be contaminated by marine organisms when serving in the marine environment, which seriously affects the service life of the materials, and must be cleaned regularly. The Hydroides fouling on the surface of 30Cr3 high-strength steel was taken as the object to be cleaned; the cleaning quality at different laser fluences was studied; the desorption behavior and the characteristics of spectral and acoustic signals during laser cleaning were analyzed; and the removal mechanism of Hydroides fouling on the surface of high-strength steel was summarized. The results show that the cleaning effect of nanosecond pulsed laser on Hydroides fouling increases with the increase of laser fluence, and the laser fluence of 9.95 J/cm2 can be used to clean the Hydroides fouling with the maximum diameter of 1.62 mm completely with little damage to the substrate. The removal mechanism of Hydroides fouling is the inverse bremsstrahlung mechanism. In the process of cleaning, the surface fouling is partially vaporized and ionized into high-temperature plasma under the action of pulsed laser. The laser energy is absorbed through inverse bremsstrahlung absorption to form shock waves to compress the surface, which leads to cracks on Hydroides fouling. When the surface compressive stress is released, the Hydroides fouling is removed from the surface, and the removal effect increases with the increase of laser fluence.
Empirical Study of Laser Cleaning of Rust, Paint, and Mill Scale from Steel Surface

Abstract:Since the last decades, the demand for Laser cleaning technology has significantly increased. Laser cleaning is the process by which contaminant or impurities are removed from a material surface by using a highly energetic focalised laser beam. Typical applications of Laser cleaning are Paint and coating stripping, mold cleaning, and Rust removal. As many industrial applications require a short processing time, it is therefore a necessity to make the Laser cleaning process as efficient as possible. In this paper, we compared the performance of two types of fiber laser sources for Laser cleaning: single mode and multimode. As these two types of lasers offer specific characteristics, we perform an empirical study to compare their performances in terms of cleaning speed for typical cleaning applications. Emphasis is put into the optimization of the optical parameters that maximize the cleaning speed with minimal substrate damage. Advantages and limitations of each system are also discussed.

Abstract:Nowadays,the main cleaning process of oxide layer of strip steel surface is pickling process or dry shot blasting equipment in the vast majority of steel corporation.However,these surface treatment processes have some problems such as environmental pollution,overpickling,poor separation effect of dust and projectile,and obvious surface scratch.This paper proposes a new process of wet shot blasting and develop a wet shot blasting equipment,which adds a water system to the conventional shot blasting equipment in consideration of the advantages of shot blasting and shot peening technology,such as small environmental pollution,no surface scratch,controllable and adjustable shot blasting parameters,and appropriate cleaning.This equipment completes the coordinated movement of different parts,including shot blasting machine,moving trolley of strip steel,and bucket type lifting machine,based on PLC control and touch screen man-machine interface.The dynamic simulation is conduct by the finite element software ANSYS/LS-DYNA,the relationship of shot blasting parameters on the properties of strip steel is analyzed and optimied.The verification by this experiment is that wet shot blasting can clear the oxide layer on the strip steel surface and has some superiorities to the pickling process and dry shot blasting.
Fabrication of liquid-infused porous slippery coating with stability, self-cleaning and corrosion resistance properties for carbon steel

Abstract:Slippery coating has evoked great attention in corrosion protection filed. Improving its lubricating layer stability and mechanical wear resistance is vital to solving the long-term application. In this work, the slippery coating for carbon steel was constructed by spraying silicone oil soaked SiO 2 on the acrylic polyurethane. The SiO 2 particles with irregular coral cluster structures were prepared by a biphasic method. For comparison, the conventional spherical SiO 2 based acrylic polyurethane coating was also prepared. The static contact angle of the slippery coating with coral cluster structured SiO 2 reached 101.3 ° and the sliding angle was 5.4 °, which presented a superior self-cleaning property. After 40 cycles of wear test, the corresponding sliding angle of the coating was 67.6% lower than that of the conventional SiO 2 acrylic polyurethane coating. The charge transfer resistance of the coating derived from EIS tests remained 1.19×10 10 Ω·cm 2 after immersion test for 20 days, which was 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the conventional SiO 2 coating. In addition, the slippery coating maintains fine sliding performance after being exposed to 0.01 mol/L HCl, 0.01 mol/L NaOH, and 80 °C air respectively. These provided the possibility for its application. The corresponding detailed mechanism was discussed in the paper.
