Abstract:Efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) 2 ) capture from post-combustion flue gases is crucial for industrial applications. Adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, exceptional stability, high selectivity, and low cost are essential to meet these requirements. In this study, we present the synthesis of bio-carbon spheres derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) using a macro-fluidic technique. The bio-carbon spheres integrate ZIF-8 for structural orientation and chitosan for the directional assembly of ZIF-8, thereby addressing the limitations of low strength in chitosan-derived carbon spheres and the challenge of macroscopic shaping of ZIF-8 particles. Additionally, the incorporation of ZIF-8 and the enhancement of the carbon skeleton increased the mesomacroporosity, improving CO2 2 transport and adsorption performance. The bio-carbon spheres demonstrated a 46.9% higher CO2 2 adsorption capacity (101 kPa, 1.40 mmol center dot g-- 1 ) compared to pure chitosan carbon granules (101 kPa, 0.96 mmol center dot g-1)- 1 ) and a 17.8% faster mass transport rate compared to ZIF-8 carbon particles. Moreover, the bio-carbon spheres exhibit a low wear rate in a simulated fluidized bed, good thermal stability, and stable cyclic regeneration performance. This study offers a novel strategy for developing industrially applicable adsorbents with hierarchical pore structures to enhance CO2 2 capture.

Abstract:N-doped porous biochar is a promising material for CO2 capture due to its easy regeneration and high CO2 selectivity. In this study, a new strategy was proposed to design monodisperse porous carbon spheres by microfluidics system with chitosan in-situ grow ZIF-8, utilizing ZIF-8 as a self-sacrificing template and nitrogen dopant. The mesoporous volume and N content of carbon spheres can be adjusted through the ZIF-8 content in the microfluidic system and carbonization temperature, within 0.01 - 0.48 cm3/g and 3.23 - 19.25%, respectively. The optimum sample (CZ2-900) exhibited superior CO2/N2 selectivity at 40. Adsorption kinetics and diffusion resistance indicated that CO2 adsorption in CZ2-900 is controlled by the process of CO2 diffusion from the surface of the basic site to mesopores. This was the first attempt at using a microfluid chip to grow ZIF-8 in chitosan skeleton and pyrolysis approach to synthesize N-doped porous carbon sphere where both additional template agent and activator are non-used, revealing the potential of microfluidic technology for the precise synthesis of highly selective CO2 capture materials.
Structuring ZIF-8-based hybrid material with hierarchical pores by in situ synthesis and thermal treatment for enhancement of CO2 uptake

Abstract:This work demonstrated the design and synthesis of millimetre-scale hierarchical porous spheres based on ZIF-8 and CS (chitosan) by in situ assembly and post-thermal treatment technology. The ZIF-8/CS spheres have been synthesized according to the assembly method, which exhibited honeycomb internal structures and micropores of 0.77 nm. While the annealed ZIF-8/CS spheres exhibited obvious mesopores with a BET surface area of 626.85 m2 g−1 and maintained the honeycomb internal structures, which were obtained by calcinations in the tube furnace under nitrogen protection at 500 °C for four hours. The annealed ZIF-8/CS spheres exhibited hierarchical porous with macropores, micropores and mesopores after annealing process. The SEM image and the XRD pattern of annealed ZIF-8/CS spheres suggested the maintenance of shape and crystal structure of ZIF-8, indicated that the annealed ZIF-8/CS spheres were stable and robust. Particularly, the CO2 uptake of annealed ZIF-8/CS spheres with 500 °C is 0.99 mmol/g, which obvious higher than that of as-synthesized ZIF-8/CS spheres and samples annealed at 450 °C, 525 °C and 550 °C. The enhancement of CO2 uptake may attribute to the carbonization of CS and the enlarge micropores of ZIF-8 after annealing process. This approach could induce a simple way for industrial structuring ZIF-8-based adsorbents with improved CO2 uptake.

Abstract:Porous carbon spheres are prepared by direct carbonization of potassium salt of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin spheres, and are investigated as CO2 adsorbents. It is found that the prepared carbon materials still maintain the typical spherical shapes after the activation, and have highly developed ultra-microporosity with uniform pore size, indicating that almost the activation takes place in the interior of the polymer spheres. The narrow-distributed ultra-micropores are attributed to the "in-situ homogeneous activation" effect produced by the mono-dispersed potassium ions as a form of -OK groups in the bulk of polymer spheres. The CS-1 sample prepared under a KOH/resins weight ratio of 1 shows a very high CO2 capture capacity of 4.83 mmol/g and good CO2/N-2 selectivity of similar to 17-45. We believe that the presence of a welldeveloped ultra-microporosity is responsible for excellent CO2 sorption performance at room temperature and ambient pressure. Abstract:The shaped hierarchical porous carbon derived from ZIF-8, MSNs (mesoporous silica nanoparticles) and CS (chitosan) has been prepared by in situ assembly and post-annealing process. By tunning carbonization temperatures (from 450 to 650 degrees C), a series of CS/ZIF-8/MSNs carbonaceous millimetre-sized spheres with honeycomb internal structures and hierarchical pores have been developed for CO2 uptake. CS/ZIF-8/MSNs-525 (the sample treated at 525 degrees C) exhibited a higher CO2 capacity (1.32 mmol/g, 1 atm) than that of other samples due to its appropriate mesopores (similar to 11 nm), micropores (similar to 0.73 nm) and BET surface area (similar to 459.2 m(2)g(-1)). The XRD pattern of CS/ZIF-8/MSNs-525 suggested that MSNs would not affect sample structure, which performed largely maintained ZIF-8 diffraction. The SEM/EDS image of CS/ZIF-8/MSNs-525 showed that MSNs (similar to 50 nm) has been well decorated onto the surface of ZIF-8 by in situ assembly and carbonization, thus indicating a hierarchical structure formed. In addition, the TG-MS technology has been also utilized to clarify that MSNs assembly would not affect the carbonization process during the formation of CS/ZIF-8/MSNs-525. Moreover, the addition of MSNs facilitated a proper pore structure and higher CO2 capacity of CS/ZIF-8/MSNs-525 compared with that of CS/ZIF-8 carbon spheres (0.9 mmol/g, 1 atm). Particularly, the CS/ZIF-8/MSNs-525 exhibited excellent stability and recyclable performance after CO2 adsorption in 10 adsorption-desorption cycles. This MSNs assembly strategy could induce a simple way for obtaining novel shaped carbonaceous adsorbent for superior CO2 uptake in industrial fields.

Abstract:N-doped hierarchical carbon spheres have been synthesized via a soft template and hydrothermal method using melamine as a nitrogen source. The obtained carbon spheres possess a high nitrogen content and well-developed porosity. These carbon spheres are examined as absorbents for CO2 capture and as electrode materials for super-capacitors. Due to the high nitrogen content and hierarchical pore size distribution, the carbons show high CO2 uptakes of 2.2-4.4 mmol g(-1) at 298 K and 1 bar. Furthermore, we observe that the carbon spheres exhibit excellent performance as supercapacitor electrodes with a high specific capacitance of 356 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.2 A g(-1). These carbon spheres as promising materials will exhibit excellent performance in various fields.

Abstract:Global warming and the increasing frequency of extreme weather caused by the gradual increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere are urgent issues that must be addressed. In this study, ZIF-8-derived in-situ nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials were prepared through one-step pyrolysis of ZIF-8. The synthesis was gradually optimized by exploring different pyrolysis temperatures to determine the optimal ZIF-8-derived porous carbon for CO2 adsorption. The CO2-adsorption capacity of ZIF-8-800 reached 5.22 and 6.19mmolg-1 at 25 ℃ and 0 ℃ (1bar), respectively. After five cycles, its CO2-adsorption capacity decreased by only about 1.7%. Moreover, the CO2/N2 selectivity at 1bar was as high as 21.2 (48.9 at 0.05bar), and the isothermal adsorption heat was also within a moderate range (31kJmol-1). The superior CO2 adsorption performance was found to originate from the comprehensive effect of the three-dimensional pore structure that combined reasonably coordinated micropores, mesopores, and macropores, as well as some specific favorable N/O groups. The results indicate the broad application prospects of ZIF-8-Ts in CO2 capture and separation and provide new ideas for the sustainable application of novel MOF-derived porous carbon materials.

Abstract:Various N-doped hierarchical porous carbons were prepared by using a new mixed-ligand ZIF (zeolitic imidazolate framework) (JUC-160) as the precursor in a one-step synthetic route without any additional carbon sources or purification steps. The effect of the ZIF precursor crystal size on the textural properties of the derived porous carbons was systematically studied. Microporosity was dominant in micron-sized JUC-160 crystal derived porous carbons, while more mesopore volume was present in porous carbons obtained from nanometre-sized JUC-160 crystals. The mJUC160-900 sample, which had a high nitrogen content and micropore volume, exhibited the highest CO2 uptake, which is 5.50 and 3.50 mmol g(-1) at 273 and 298 K, respectively. Moreover, the analysis based on the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) exhibited a high adsorption selectivity for CO2/N-2 at 298 K and 1 bar (S-ads = 29).

Abstract:Two hierarchical porous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8 and ZIF-90) were synthesized at room temperature and pressure within 60 s using N, N-diethylethanolamine as template. The resulting ZIF-8 showed hierarchically porous structure with micro-, meso-, and macropores together with excellent thermal stability. Furthermore, the porosity properties can be readily tuned by changing the amount of template. The space-time yield (STY) was as high as 1.59 x 10(4) kg m(-3) d(-1), which is higher than any previously reports. The introduced template N, N-diethylethanolamine played two roles during the synthesis: one played a protonation agent role enables the ligands deprotonation, the other played a template role served as structure-directing agents (SDAs) of meso- and macropores. The as-syntehszied hierarchical porous ZIF-8 exhibited enhanced adsorption capacity for CO2 capture. This work offers a new direction for the facile synthesis of hierarchical porous ZIFs with high STY.

Abstract:Spherical nitrogen-containing polymer and microporous carbon materials have been synthesized by using hexamethylenetetramine as nitrogen source and one of the carbon precursors under solvothermal conditions, without using any surfactant or toxic reagent such as formaldehyde. The synthesis strategy is user-friendly, cost-effective, and can be easily scaled up for production. The microporous carbon spheres exhibit high surface areas of 528-936 m(2) g(-1) with a micropore size of 0.6-1.3 nm. The synthesized microporous carbons show a good capacity to store CO2, which is mainly due to the presence of nitrogen-containing groups and a large amount of narrow micropores (< 1.0 nm). At 1 atm, the equilibrium CO2 capture capacities of the obtained microporous carbons are in the range of 3.9-5.6 mmol g(-1) at 0 degrees C and 2.7-4.0 mmol g(-1) at 25 degrees C.

Abstract:The porous C‐S‐H@ZIF‐8, which possesses the merits of outstanding CO2 adsorption capacity (293.6 mg g−1), low cost, and high CO2 selectivity, is fabricated, providing great potential in the practical application of CO2 capture and storage. CO2 capture and storage have been regarded as promising concepts to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions. However, the high cost, inferior adsorption capacity, and higher effective activation temperature of traditional sorbents limit their practical application in efficient CO2 capture. Here, a C‐S‐H@ZIF‐8 (C‐S‐Z) sorbent is fabricated by in situ growth of the ZIF‐8 shell on the C‐S‐H (calcium‐silicate‐hydrate) surface for ultra‐high CO2 adsorption and storage. Among the C‐S‐Z, the outer ZIF‐8 shell acts as a transport channel that promotes CO2 absorption toward the underlying C‐S‐H substrate for accelerated carbonation while preventing nitrogen and water from reaching the interior C‐S‐H. As a consequence, C‐S‐Z possesses the merits of ample pyrrolic nitrogen, porous structure, and ultra‐high surface area (577.18 m2 g−1), that contribute to an ultra‐high CO2 capture capacity, reaching 293.6 mg g−1. DFT calculations show a high CO2 adsorption energy and the mineral carbonation is dominant by the adsorption process. In particular, the advantages of the outstanding adsorption capacity, low cost, and high CO2 selectivity make this C‐S‐H‐based sorbent hold great potential in the practical application for direct air CO2 capture and storage.

Abstract:Microporous carbon has been widely known as a probable material to capture greenhouse gases. This work provides a facile synthesis of monodisperse biomass-derived microporous carbon spheres (CSs) for effective CO2 capture. The spheres were synthesized by a novel continuous microfluidic strategy from oil-in-water-in-oil ((O1/W2)/O2) emulsions. O1 nanodroplets could be self-assembled into the cores of micelles, which were formed by chitosan and surfactant F127 in the W2 phase through high-speed liquid-phase shearing. The obtained O1/W2 emulsion can be further sheared into a sphere by the O2 phase. After carbonization, nanodroplet-templated pores shrank to micropores and ultramicropores. The optimal sample showed the developed pore structure with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 576 m2/g and microporous volume of 0.22 cm3/g. Compared with O1 free CS, the dynamic adsorption capacity of CO2 was improved to 1.20 mmol/g from 0.42 mmol/g. The CO2 capture capacity, cycling stability, isosteric heats, and mass diffusion coefficient of CSs were evaluated as well. The results demonstrate that microporous CSs are promising candidates for CO2 capture with low cost and a green synthesis route, which was achieved via continuous microfluidic strategy using sustainable biomass chitosan as a carbon precursor and droplets as templates.
Facile synthesis of porous carbon nitride spheres with hierarchical three-dimensional mesostructures for CO 2 capture

Abstract:Porous carbon nitride (CN) spheres with partially crystalline frameworks have been successfully synthesized via a nanocasting approach by using spherical mesoporous cellular silica foams (MCFs) as a hard template, and ethylenediamine and carbon tetrachloride as precursors. The resulting spherical CN materials have uniform diameters of ca. 4 μm, hierarchical three-dimensional (3-D) mesostructures with small and large mesopores with pore diameters centered at ca. 4.0 and 43 nm, respectively, a relatively high BET surface area of ∼550 m2/g, and a pore volume of 0.90 cm3/g. High-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and Raman spectra demonstrate that the porous CN material has a partly graphitized structure. In addition, elemental analyses, X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD) show that the material has a high nitrogen content (17.8 wt%) with nitrogen-containing groups and abundant basic sites. The hierarchical porous CN spheres have excellent CO2 capture properties with a capacity of 2.90 mmol/g at 25 °C and 0.97 mmol/g at 75 °C, superior to those of the pure carbon materials with analogous mesostructures. This can be mainly attributed to the abundant nitrogen-containing basic groups, hierarchical mesostructure, relatively high BET surface area and stable framework. Furthermore, the presence of a large number of micropores and small mesopores also enhance the CO2 capture performance, owing to the capillary condensation effect.

Abstract:Design of new hierarchical porous adsorbent is an effective method for CO2 capture. Herein, PI/ZIF-8 aerogels were synthesized by an impregnation method. The PI/ZIF-8 aerogel is a promising CO2 adsorbent with the advantages of both PI aerogel and ZIF-8. The high CO2 capture performance of PIZ10 aerogel is attributed to the synergistic effect of PI and ZIF-8. More importantly, the PIZ10 aerogel shows high stability for CO2 capture, which is important for the practical application.
