Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 1.7 µm femtosecond Tm-doped fiber laser system featuring an all-polarization-maintaining architecture. The seed oscillator is mode-locked by carbon nanotubes and delivers stable pulse centered at 1787.6 nm. With two backward pumped amplifiers, the average power of the laser is amplified to ∼458 mW. Employing proper dispersion management in an all-fiber chirped pulse amplification scheme and the soliton compression effect, we obtained a femtosecond pulse of 206 fs with a pulse energy of 8.8 nJ at a repetition rate of ∼52 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of 1.7 µm femtosecond laser based on a thulium-doped oscillator with all-polarization-maintaining architecture.

Abstract:Moving the fiber laser emission to the region below one micron may provide a cheaper, more compact and robust alternatives to the existing solid state lasers. Here, for the first time we report a neodymium mode-locked fiber laser emitting at 905 nm in the all-fiber polarization maintaining configuration. We obtain a self-starting pulse generation in nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) cavity configuration. To suppress a dominant emission at 1064 nm corresponding to a 4-level laser scheme, we use an active fiber - 920/1064 division multiplexer - active fiber sandwich-like sequence in the NALM loop. A rectangular shape dissipative soliton had nJ energy, 30 pm spectral width and 80 - 430 ps width linearly depending on the pump power. Excellent agreement with numerical simulation allowed us to recover pulse shape and width for the pulses out of autocorrelation window.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the realization of a half-polarization-maintaining (half-PM) fiber laser, in which mode-locking is provided by a reflective multimode-interference saturable absorber (SA). In the specially designed SA, linearly polarized light is coupled into a 15-cm-long graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF) through the PM fiber, and then reflected back to the PM structure through a mirror pigtailed with a single-mode fiber (SMF). The modulation depth and saturation peak power are measured to be 1.5 % and 0.6 W, respectively. The proposed SA device is incorporated into a novel half-PM erbium-doped fiber oscillator, which generates soliton pulses with 409 fs temporal duration at a 33.3 MHz repetition rate. The proposed fiber laser is compared to a conventional non-PM fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) in terms of essential optical properties such as the spectral bandwidth, pulse duration, and stability performance. Short- and long-time stability tests and superior noise performance corroborate robust mode-locking in this setup.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of soliton and dissipative soliton in an ultrafast thulium (Tm) doped fiber laser based upon cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced mode-locking. The mode-locking is realized by periodically modulating the 2-µm signal through XPM that is activated by an injected 1.5-µm pulsed laser. Such a mechanism enables the laser to be mode-locked in various operation regimes without any real or artificial saturable absorbers. Thanks to the XPM pulling effect, the wavelength of the Tm-doped fiber laser can be tuned by adjusting the repetition frequency of the 1.5-µm pulsed laser. The maximum tuning ranges achieved in this work for the soliton and dissipative soliton regimes are respectively 11 nm and 15 nm. The outcomes of this work not only provide a continuously and controllably wavelength-tunable ultrafast laser but also offer a passively synchronized dual-color fiber laser system, which is promised for many important applications such as Raman spectroscopy, nonlinear frequency conversion systems, and multi-color pump-probe systems.

Abstract:We report a mode-locked high-power all-polarization-maintaining Er/Yb-doped large-mode-area fiber oscillator based on a bias nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). The oscillator can generate ∼1-nJ femtosecond pulses without dispersion compensation. By inserting a Martinez-type compensator to provide normal dispersion, it can generate >10-nJ picosecond dissipative solitons (DSs). The measured M2 factors are below 1.5, indicating a good beam quality. When the cavity dispersion is tuned to be ∼0.704 ps2, the oscillator can deliver chirped DSs with an average power as high as 690 mW at a repetition rate of 49.86 MHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of ∼13.8 nJ. The pulse after compression has a near Fourier-limited width of ∼2 ps. Successful demonstration of this laser provides a robust scheme for improving the performance of ultrafast fiber lasers in average power and pulse energy.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a novel mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser with a saturable absorber based on nonlinear Kerr beam cleanup effect. The saturable absorber was formed by a 2-m graded-index multimode fiber and a single-mode fiber segment served as a diaphragm. With an all-normal-dispersion-fiber configuration, the laser generated dissipative soliton pulses with pulse duration of 26.38 ps and pulse energy more than 0.25 nJ; output pulses could be compressed externally to 615.7 fs. Moreover, the self-starting mode-locking operation of this laser exhibited a high stability with a measured signal-to-noise ratio of 73.4 dB in the RF spectrum.

Abstract:Passive ultrafast photoelectric devices based on the self-focusing effect have been deeply studied in ultrashort pulse formation, and great progress has been made in solid-state oscillators known as Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM). The intensity-dependent change of refractive index and the 1-2 fs electronic response time of materials are the basics of KLM. Recently, the advantages of fiber lasers such as compact structure, outstanding environmental stability, excellent heat dissipation potential, and low cost have stimulated great interest among researchers to explore stable and reliable fiber lasers. Based on the feasibility of KML in fiber lasers that have been reported, we demonstrate a high-stable self-mode-locking Er-doped fiber laser in this work. Diverse stable self-mode-locking pulses phenomena can be obtained through adjusting the polarization state of the cavity, including the output pulses with a fundamental frequency of 3.93 MHz, dark-bright soliton pulses, the 3rd harmonic operation, the 81st harmonic operation with the repetition rate of 318.4 MHz and the signal-to-noise ratio of 80 dB, and dual-wavelength output.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked fiber laser with a 1.03 GHz fundamental repetition rate and a low noise performance is demonstrated. The compact and robust laser operates at a central wavelength of 1553.9 nm with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 7.9 nm and a temporal width of 550 fs. All the fibers and components used in the laser are polarization-maintaining (PM), so the output pulses are linearly polarized. The degree of polarization of the optical pulses is measured to be 0.9994. The phase noise of the seventh harmonic (7.21 GHz) is measured and a low timing jitter of 11.7 fs is obtained by integrating the phase noise from 30 MHz down to 100 Hz. The noise performance is analyzed in detail, and the methods for further optimizing the timing jitter are also proposed. So far, we know this to be the first-reported low-noise all-PM erbium-doped fiber laser with a gigahertz level pulse repetition rate.

Abstract:In this letter, we first demonstrate a core-pumped passively mode-locked all-normal-dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution operating around 980 nm. The dissipative soliton fiber laser pulse can be compressed down to 250 fs with 1 nJ pulse energy, and the slope efficiency of the oscillator can be as high as 19%. To improve the dissipative soliton laser output spectrum smoothness, we replace the birefringent plate based intracavity filter with a diffraction-grating based filter. The output pulse duration can then be further compressed down to 180 fs with improved spectral-smoothness. These schemes have potential applications in seeding cryogenic Yb:YLF amplifiers and underwater exploration of marine resources.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel approach to achieve wavelength-tunable ultrashort pulses from an all-fiber mode-locked laser with a saturable absorber based on nonlinear Kerr beam clean-up effect. This saturable absorber was formed by a single-mode fiber spliced to a graded-index multimode fiber, and its tunable band-pass filter effect is studied by a numerical model. By adjusting the bending condition of graded-index multimode fiber, the laser could produce dissipative soliton pulses with their central wavelength tunable from1040 nm to 1063 nm. The pulse width of output laser could be compressed externally to 791 fs, and the signal to noise ratio of its radio frequency spectrum was measured to be 75.5 dB. This work provides a new idea for the design of wavelength-tunable mode-locked laser which can be used as an attractive light source in communication system.

Abstract:An all-polarization-maintaining (PM) figure-9 mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser that leverages a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) incorporated with a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) for dispersion management is experimentally demonstrated. A dual output is obtained at the transmission and reflection arm of the NLAM loop, with a center wavelength of 1950 nm and 3 dB bandwidth of, respectively, 8.6 nm and 30 nm. The corresponding pulse repetition rate is 30.6 MHz with an average power of, respectively, 6.5 mW and 2 mW for the two outputted pulses. By utilizing an extra-cavity amplification, the output of the transmission arm experiences nonlinear pulse evolution and its pulse width is directly compressed to 123 fs (almost approaches the calculated Fourier transform limited duration of 114 fs), along with the scaling of the average power to 80 mW. Moreover, through characterizing the noise properties of the laser, it is found that the phase noise, intensity noise and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the fundamental repetition frequency at the transmission arm manifests a better performance than at the reflection arm. With an integration frequency of [3 kHz, 1 MHz], an optimal timing jitter and relative intensity noise of 164 fs and 0.006 are, respectively, obtained. The noise suppression mechanism is attributed to the interaction between the transmission curve of the NALM and the pulse peak power fluctuations, as well as the dispersion management of the cavity. In addition, the stable operation of the laser is further verified by monitoring the long-term stability.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a figure-eight all-polarization maintaining thulium-doped mode-locked fiber laser based on a nonlinear optical loop mirror operating at noise-like pulse regimes. The total cavity length is 34.5 m, and the calculated net group delay dispersion is estimated to be 2.616 ps2. At the maximum pump power, stable noise-like pulse centered at 1943 nm with a spectral full width at half maximum of 32 nm, a pulse energy of 13.51 nJ, and a coherence spike width of 236 fs is generated at a repetition rate of 5.96 MHz with the signal-to-noise ratio 64 dB. The polarization extinction ratio is > 15 dB at any mode-locking operation. The slope efficiency and the output power fluctuation of the laser are 5.16 and 0.039, respectively. The laser does not require polarization state controllers, and it holds very high stability, which is insensitive to temperature changes or mechanical vibrations. Through further amplification, it will be a good laser source for real-time interrogation of fiber Bragg gratings and supercontinuum generation.

Abstract:An environmentally stable, repetition rate tunable, all-polarization-maintaining, Er-doped pulse fiber laser with a single-wall carbon nanotubes saturated absorber is demonstrated. The ring laser cavity includes a delay line enabling a tunable repetition rate to vary from 35.52 MHz to 35.64 MHz with continuous mode-locked operation. The laser output parameters confirm that the tunable mode-locked operations are stable. High environmental stability is also confirmed by the −130 dBc/Hz low phase noise, a 70-dB signal-to-noise ratio of radio frequency signals, a low amplitude fluctuation of 5.76 × 10−4, and a low fluctuation of repetition rate of 12 Hz. The laser shows a high degree of polarization of 93%.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-starting 700 MHz repetition rate Yb:fiber laser incorporated with a phase biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirror as an artificial saturable absorber. The laser delivers a maximum power of 150 mW and a pulse width of 215 fs at a pump power of 710 mW. The integration of relative intensity noise (RIN) between 10 Hz and 10 MHz results in a minimum integrated RIN of 0.015%. The phase noise of the fundamental repetition rate was also characterized at different net-cavity dispersion. Although the laser is made of nonpolarization maintaining fiber, the mode locking sustains over two weeks in open air, showing its environmental stability.

Abstract:An all-polarization maintaining mode-locked Yb-doped fiber integrated laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop Mirror (NALM) under the operation regime of dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) has been demonstrated. The mode-locked laser can generate DSR pulses at 1.04 μm at the repetition rate of 2.59 MHz. The output DSR pulses can be tuned in pulse width from hundreds of picoseconds to a few nanoseconds by adjusting the pump power. By changing the pump power of the main loop and the NALM, the maximum output average power of 51.4 mW and the corresponding pulse energy about 20 nJ are achieved, respectively. Pulse breaking of the DSR pulses was observed apart from the typical pulse broadening at a fixed pulse peak power due to the peak power clamping effect, while solely increasing the main loop pump power. In addition, the characteristics of the DSR pulses such as pulse width, pulse energy, output power and optical spectrum with the changing of main loop pump power and NALM pump power are also discussed respectively.
