Abstract:<p>We report on a novel architecture for robust all polarization-maintaining (PM) femtosecond linear fiber lasers mode-locked by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) with phase bias. Due to a non-reciprocal phase shift, the reflectivity of the artificial saturable absorber has a steeper slope around zero difference in nonlinear phase shift between the orthogonal polarizations, offering the possibility to reduce mode locking threshold and reach high repetition rates. We demonstrate an environmentally stable self-starting 105 MHz repetition rate linear Yb:fiber laser based on NPE with phase bias mode locking. The laser delivers an average power of 26.3 mW and 332 fs pulse which is further compressed to 91 fs at a pump power of 425 mW. Our work provides a novel promising compact and robust femtosecond laser for ultrafast photonic applications.</p>

Abstract:We report on an erbium-doped, mode-locked fiber laser incorporated with various phase-biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirrors. Our cavity employs all polarization-maintaining fibers so that the laser is environmentally stable and insensitive to thermal and mechanical perturbations. The laser with a pi/2 phase bias directly delivers 1.20 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 88.2 MHz. The output power is 37.0 mW and the single-pulse energy is similar to 0.42 nJ, when the pump power is 450 mW. Since the phase bias plays an important role in enhancing self-starting properties, we mainly investigate the self-starting threshold and the phase noise of the fiber oscillator using three diverse phase biases. It is found that compared with lambda/6 and lambda/10 waveplates, the laser employing a lambda/8 waveplate has a lower self-starting threshold and higher phase noise.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:An all polarization maintaining mode-locked fiber laser which is based on bias phase shift nonlinear loop mirror is proposed. An all polarization maintaining mode-locked oscillator system is set up. The system generates pulses with average power of 2.4 W, repetition rate of 20.3 MHz and pulse width of 142 fs by three stages Yb-doped fiber amplification. Since the oscillator adopts all polarization maintaining fiber structure, the mode locking is environmentally stable.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked fiber laser with a 1.03 GHz fundamental repetition rate and a low noise performance is demonstrated. The compact and robust laser operates at a central wavelength of 1553.9 nm with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 7.9 nm and a temporal width of 550 fs. All the fibers and components used in the laser are polarization-maintaining (PM), so the output pulses are linearly polarized. The degree of polarization of the optical pulses is measured to be 0.9994. The phase noise of the seventh harmonic (7.21 GHz) is measured and a low timing jitter of 11.7 fs is obtained by integrating the phase noise from 30 MHz down to 100 Hz. The noise performance is analyzed in detail, and the methods for further optimizing the timing jitter are also proposed. So far, we know this to be the first-reported low-noise all-PM erbium-doped fiber laser with a gigahertz level pulse repetition rate.

Abstract:Nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) is among the most advanced techniques for obtaining ultrashort pulses with excellent optical performance. However, it is challenging to design environmentally stable NPE fiber oscillators using only polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers. Here, we use the same PM fiber and non-reciprocal phase shifter to design two different devices, which are capable of acting as effective NPE saturable absorbers (SAs) in two all-PM linear cavity fiber lasers. These two laser setups differ in the position of the non-reciprocal phase shifter, the presence of which is crucial for the proposed fiber lasers to reduce their mode-locking thresholds and achieve high repetition rates above 100 MHz. The mode-locking principle and pulse evolution in the laser cavity are investigated theoretically. The first all-PM fiber oscillator emits sub-200 fs stretched pulses with low peak powers. The second oscillator, with a simpler architecture, directly delivers stretched pulses with high peak powers, the spectral bandwidth greater than 30 nm, and the pulse duration less than 90 fs. To the best of our knowledge, 79 fs achieved in this design is the shortest pulse duration provided by PM fiber lasers using NPE mode-lockers.

Abstract:We report on a robust, erbium-doped ultrafast fiber laser mode-locked by an artificial saturable absorber (SA) based on nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). Unlike previous NPE fiber lasers, our cavity employs all polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber so that the laser is insensitive against environmental fluctuations. By incorporating a phase shifter in the NPE artificial SA, the oscillator possesses self-starting mode-locking ability. However, it is difficult to start pulsed operation without such a phase shifter. The simple and novel fiber laser scheme utilizing above mentioned design can directly generate 0.11 nJ, 1.20 ps ultrashort pulses at a repetition rate of 115 MHz, which is the highest repetition rate in this type of fiber lasers. We believe that this fiber oscillator offers a promising source for high repetition rate applications under less stable conditions.

Abstract:A multifunctional all-fiber polarization-maintaining nonlinear amplifier system is proposed and investigated. Two Erbium-doped polarization-preserving gain fibers are used to amplify the seed laser and split into four output points with different transmission fibers to obtain four stable ultra-short pulses with different durations, which vary from tens of fs to ps level. And the output powers are tens of mW and can be changed with different output point. The seed laser in this process has a repetition rate of 113 MHz, a pulse duration of about 450fs, and different absorption coefficients for the two gain fibers. It is demonstrated that the proposed fiber laser with varied pulse duration can be potentially applied in the laser detection, terahertz generation, and even different types of material processing.

Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. The thermally induced dephasing effect is found to be the key issue for improving second-harmonic efficiency. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the realization of a half-polarization-maintaining (half-PM) fiber laser, in which mode-locking is provided by a reflective multimode-interference saturable absorber (SA). In the specially designed SA, linearly polarized light is coupled into a 15-cm-long graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF) through the PM fiber, and then reflected back to the PM structure through a mirror pigtailed with a single-mode fiber (SMF). The modulation depth and saturation peak power are measured to be 1.5 % and 0.6 W, respectively. The proposed SA device is incorporated into a novel half-PM erbium-doped fiber oscillator, which generates soliton pulses with 409 fs temporal duration at a 33.3 MHz repetition rate. The proposed fiber laser is compared to a conventional non-PM fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) in terms of essential optical properties such as the spectral bandwidth, pulse duration, and stability performance. Short- and long-time stability tests and superior noise performance corroborate robust mode-locking in this setup.

Abstract:We demonstrate a femtosecond all-polarization-maintaining Nd fiber laser working at 920 nm mode locked by a biased non-linear loop mirror. The broadest spectral width of the pulse is 25.2 nm and the output power is 8 mW with 320 mW pump power. The measured pulse width is 109 fs with extra-cavity compression. The laser configuration of all-polarization-maintaining fiber can directly enhance the environmental stability of generated pulses. The seed pulses of the oscillator were amplified over 400 mW, which served as the light source for a two-photon microscope. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a 920 nm femtosecond Nd polarization-maintaining fiber laser based on a non-linear loop mirror. Abstract:Despite the wide applications for high-repetition-rate mode-locked fiber lasers, challenges persist in shortening the cavity length and coupling the fiber collimators for most existing techniques. Here, we introduce a novel collimator alignment method and demonstrate an all-polarization-maintaining erbium-doped fiber laser that contains a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror with a repetition rate of 213 MHz. Compared to the conventional method, we achieve in-situ alignment of the collimators in a simplified two-step process. Besides, through a comparison of the spectra from the output ports of the laser, we assess their quality and establish the spectral evolution relationships among these ports. It is found that, in addition to the widely believed large nonlinear effects, spectral interference also plays a significant role in spectral distortion. Moreover, a transition between different stability states is observed from the power variation of the single pulse.

Abstract:<p>Multiple pulse generation in a single cavity attracts increasing attention from scientists and engineers. It could greatly simplify the laser system for applications requiring multiple pulses. Here, with a polarization-rotation loop mirror and a Faraday mirror at the ends of the isolator-free linear fiber cavity, the polarization states of the beams could be switched in each trip across the cavity, and pulses with different state of polarization may circulate in the loop mirror in different directions. Thus, two pulses with orthogonal polarization states could exist and propagate in the cavity separately. Pumped at 13 mW, polarization-multiplexed picosecond pulse outputs centered at 1564.40 nm and 1564.42 nm could be experimentally observed from the 2*2 output coupler, respectively. By examining the RF spectrum at both the fundamental and 100-times repetition rate and the temporal pulse trains, it is determined that the polarization-multiplexed pulses have the exact same repetition rate, which is attributed to the completely common propagation path and compensated polarization mode dispersion due to the end mirrors. Such polarization-multiplexed, synchronous ultrashort pulse generation from a linear-cavity fiber laser provides a simple laser configuration and method to generate stable synchronous pulses.</p>

Machine-learning Iterative Optimization for All Polarization-Maintaining Linear Cavity Er:fiber Laser.

Abstract:All polarization-maintaining (PM) linear cavity mode-locked fiber lasers are promising ultrafast laser sources due to their compactness and environmental robustness. Here, we demonstrate a linear cavity fiber laser with all-PM configuration experimentally and investigate the mode-locking formation of the laser using a machine-learning iterative optimization method based on the Gaussian process. The optimization algorithm can converge rapidly after only 30 runs. Using the optimized parameters, we simulate the generation of mode-locked pulses from noise. The output spectrum and pulse energy are highly consistent with the experiment. Furthermore, we describe the intracavity dynamic evolution under group velocity mismatch. We then show that the pulse trapping induced by cross-phase modulation leads to the overcompensated time synchronization between the orthogonally polarized components.

Abstract:We demonstrate a mode-locked long all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. The fiber oscillator directly delivers 221 ps chirped pulses at the repetition rate of 448 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 134 nJ and compressed down to 870 fs by a grating pair. Abstract:An ytterbium-doped, mode-locking fiber front-end laser, delivering both a femtosecond seed laser and picosecond seed laser, was demonstrated. The fundamental repetition rate of the 1031 nm mode-locked laser was 32.77 MHz, realized with the all-polarization-maintaining (all-PM) nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). The femtosecond seed laser and the picosecond seed laser were delivered after carefully optimizing the nonlinear amplification process. The corresponding pulse durations were 85 fs and 2.88 ps, with average power of 171 mW and 562.5 mW, respectively.

Abstract:Fiber-based Sagnac interferometers have been widely used in applications such as navigation, sensing and laser. The common-path structure of a Sagnac interferometer cuts both ways. On one hand, precise length control between optical paths is not required, which is critical for robust interferometric measurements. On the other hand, the transmittance of a Sagnac fiber loop is fixed, which loses the freedom of tuning and is especially unfavorable for laser development. Here, we propose a twisted Sagnac interferometer whose phase bias can be continuously tuned. By inviting a 90 degrees splicing in the Sagnac loop and utilizing the birefringence of polarization maintaining fiber, a linear phase bias can be induced and adjusted. When it is applied in a fiber laser system and set with a proper bias of the transmittance, mode-locked operation can be self-started. In our demonstration, the laser can generate pulses with a spectral bandwidth of 31 nm and a pulse duration of 160 fs under 24.5 MHz repetition rate. The real-time continuous adjustment of transmittance provides greater flexibility and control over the laser systems, and enables potential applications in fields like optical metrology and sensing.
