Abstract:Soliton "molecules", i.e., bound states of two or several solitons, represent a fundamental concept, which manifests itself in various nonlinear systems. They are dynamically similar to chemical molecules, attracting great interest to fundamental studies and offering potential applications (such as multilevel encoding of optical data). Here, the study demonstrates a novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds (DSMC) built as a hybrid bound state of multiple bound soliton pulses carried by two wavelengths in a fiber laser. The DSMCs are maintained by two different binding mechanisms, viz., the self-phase modulation (SPM) interaction between temporal solitons at the same wavelength, mediated by their tails, and the cross-phase modulation (XPM) interaction between solitons at different wavelengths. They also exhibit unique temporal and spectral vibration profiles. Both static DSMCs and ones with robust internal vibrations are generated experimentally in the fiber laser, and numerically as solutions of the corresponding dissipative nonlinear model. The findings reported here expand the concept of soliton molecules and further promote their similarity to chemical molecules. Novel dichromatic soliton-molecule compounds that are built as hybrid bound states of multiple solitons carried by two different optical wavelengths are demonstrated in mode-locked fiber lasers. The vibration dynamics of DSMCs are experimental and theoretically revealed, suggesting directions for further work in nonlinear fiber optics, as well as using soliton bound states for emulation of molecular dynamics. image

Abstract:We report the first experimental observation, to the best of our knowledge, of soliton molecules in a robust all polarization-maintaining (PM) mode-locked fiber laser with a nonreciprocal phase bias that results in a low self-starting threshold and stable mode locking. Through elaborately tuning the waveplate in the cavity, calibrating the laser pulse from conventional soliton to soliton molecules is implemented, and versatile soliton molecules including harmonic soliton pairs, tightly or loosely bound soliton quartets, multipulse bound solitons are achieved and manipulated at different pump powers. Theoretical investigations are established to elucidate the soliton molecules spectral characteristics with various phase differences and time separations in the cavity that elicit good concurrence with achieved experimental results. The achieved results both rich the nonlinear dynamics in fiber lasers and pave the potential applications for this excellent architecture fiber laser.

Abstract:Bound states of solitons ("molecules") occur in various settings, playing an important role in the operation of fiber lasers, optical emulation, encoding, and communications. Soliton interactions are generally related to breathing dynamics in nonlinear dissipative systems, and maintain potential applications in spectroscopy. In the present work, dichromatic breather molecules (DBMs) are created in a synchronized mode-locked fiber laser. Real-time delay-shifting interference spectra are measured to display the temporal evolution of the DBMs, that cannot be observed by means of the usual real-time spectroscopy. As a result, robust out-of-phase vibrations are found as a typical intrinsic mode of DBMs. The same bound states are produced numerically in the framework of a model combining equations for the population inversion in the mode-locked laser and cross-phase-modulation-coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations for amplitudes of the optical fields in the fiber segments of the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the Q-switching instability induces the onset of breathing oscillations. The findings offer new possibilities for the design of various regimes of the operation of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of solitons and bound-state solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser based on the nonlinear polarization rotation effect by polarization-dependent helical grating. The CO2-laser-inscribed grating has a high polarization-dependent loss of 24.4 dB at 1558.4 nm, which has facilitated the achievement of stable mode locking. The soliton laser could generate 548.9 fs pulses at 1560.59 nm with a spectrum bandwidth of 5.45 nm and a signal-to-noise ratio of 75.2 dB. Through adjustment of the polarization controller and pump power, a bound-state soliton mode-locked pulse with a spectral modulation period of 3.11 nm was achieved and the temporal interval between the two solitons was 2.19 ps. Furthermore, its repetition rate can be easily manipulated by varying the pump power. The results indicated that the polarization-dependent helical grating is an excellent polarizer that could be applied in an ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:Due to the necessity of making a series of random adjustments after mode-locking in most experiments for preparing soliton molecules, the repeatability of the preparations remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a novel all-polarization-maintaining erbium-doped fiber laser that utilizes a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror for mode-locking and features a linear shape. This laser can stably output soliton molecules without any additional adjustment once the mode-locking self-starts. Moreover, it can achieve the transition from soliton molecule state to soliton state, and then to multi-pulse state by reducing the pumping power. The unconventional method of generating multi-pulses, combined with a wide pumping power range of 200--640 mW for maintaining mode-locking, allowed us to observe periodic optical spectra with two complete cycles for the first time. Based on the experimental facts, we develop a multistability model to explain this phenomenon. With its ability to switch between three stable states, this flexible laser can serve as a versatile toolbox for studying soliton dynamics.

Abstract:Raman dissipative soliton is generated in a mode locked polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. Ultrafast Raman laser with a repetition rate of 1.23 MHz is obtained. Signal to noise ratio of the radio frequency spectrum of the Raman dissipative soliton is as high as 85 dB. As the pump power increasing, the pulse energy and the spectral width increase, while the pulse width decreases. The highest pulse energy and lowest pulse width is 1.23 nJ and 63 ps, respectively. It is the first report of Raman dissipative soliton generation from an all polarization maintaining mode locked fiber laser to the best of our knowledge. This configuration provides a method to obtain linearly-polarized ultrafast laser at flexible wavelengths.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:A long-term stable picosecond dissipative soliton (DS) is achieved for the first time using nonlinear polarization evolution. The environmental stabilization is performed by a Faraday mirror, which can cancel environmentally induced changes in the birefringence of the fiber. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components generates DS pulses with 2.9 nJ single pulse energy and 5.9 ps pulse width. The output power test over 2 hours shows the excellent mode-locking stability of this design.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of stable single solitons and soliton molecules in a 2-mu m thulium-holmium-doped fiber laser mode-locked through the nonlinear polarization evolution technique within an anomalously dispersive cavity. Single 0.65 nJ solitons feature a 7.3 nm spectral FWHM and 540 fs temporal duration, yielding a time bandwidth product close to the Fourier-transform limitation. Under the same pumping power of 740 mW, stable out-of-phase twin-soliton molecules, featuring a temporal separation of 2.5 ps between the two similar to 700 fs pulses, are generated in a deterministic way, while the central wavelength of the soliton molecules can be tuned from 1920 to 1940 nm. Finally, we present strong experimental evidence of vibrating soliton molecules. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, we report on a stable passive 23rd harmonic mode-locked erbium-doped fiber soliton laser for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In this laser, 23 solitons are uniformly distributed in the cavity simultaneously, and all solitons have the same energy and duration. The increase of the coupler output enhances the dispersive radiation, and the longer cavity strengthens the interaction between solitons and dispersive waves. The two above factors play the key function to generate the 23rd harmonic mode-locked operation.

Abstract:A new category of harmonic mode-locked pattern is reported in passively mode-locked fiber laser (MLFL). The laser base on gold nanorods (GNRs) as a mechanism to trigger mode locking. By adjusting polarization controllers and pumping power, including fundamental mode-locked pulse, condensed soliton phase, soliton rain, harmonic condensed soliton phase have been observed. The harmonics condensed soliton phase were experimentally verified for the first time in the MLFL. The experimental results explained the conditions for the generation of condensed soliton phase and extend the pulse type of harmonic mode-locking (HML).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the realization of a half-polarization-maintaining (half-PM) fiber laser, in which mode-locking is provided by a reflective multimode-interference saturable absorber (SA). In the specially designed SA, linearly polarized light is coupled into a 15-cm-long graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF) through the PM fiber, and then reflected back to the PM structure through a mirror pigtailed with a single-mode fiber (SMF). The modulation depth and saturation peak power are measured to be 1.5 % and 0.6 W, respectively. The proposed SA device is incorporated into a novel half-PM erbium-doped fiber oscillator, which generates soliton pulses with 409 fs temporal duration at a 33.3 MHz repetition rate. The proposed fiber laser is compared to a conventional non-PM fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) in terms of essential optical properties such as the spectral bandwidth, pulse duration, and stability performance. Short- and long-time stability tests and superior noise performance corroborate robust mode-locking in this setup.

Abstract:An all-fiber polarization maintaining high-power laser system operating at 1.7 μm based on the Raman-induced soliton self-frequency shifting effect is demonstrated. The entirely fiberized system is built by erbium-doped oscillator and two-stage amplifiers with polarization maintaining commercial silica fibers and devices, which can provide robust and stable soliton generation. High power soliton laser with the average of 0.28 W, the repetition rate of 42.7 MHz, and pulse duration of 515 fs is generated directly from the main amplifier. Our experiment provides a feasible method for high-power all-fiber polarization maintaining femtosecond laser generation working at 1.7 μm.

Abstract:The bound state soliton pulse, a novel mode-locked output state of fiber lasers, has been studied extensively to gain a better understanding of soliton interactions and to explain the mechanism behind the generation of mode-locked pulses. In this particular research, we utilized a self-made saturable absorber (SA) consisting of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) in a fully polarization maintaining (PM) erbium-doped fiber optical path. Through this setup, we observed various bound state pulse phenomena, including the double bound state with different phase differences, the bound state formed by two double pulse bound states, the multi-pulse bound state, etc. The abundant bound soliton pulse states demonstrated the excellent nonlinear absorption characteristics of the SA as well as the excellent optical properties of the all-PM fiber laser. It contributed to exploring the relationship between sub pulses and mode-locked pulses in the future. Additionally, due to the strong interaction between bound state solitons and the inherent stability of the PM optical path, there was potential for utilizing this setup as a seed source to enhance the stability of high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:The generation and evolution of soliton molecules are investigated theoretically with the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations based on a vector field. The formation of second‐and third‐order soliton molecules is investigated. Besides this, various‐order soliton molecules from the 6th order to the 13th order have been observed by adjusting small‐signal gain and phase delay. Finally, we analyze the reason for the soliton molecule generation. Exploring soliton molecules is helpful for optical communication as well as for fiber laser design.

Abstract:Passively mode locked fiber lasers are excellent platforms for soliton generation. Here, multi-state switchable behaviors in a slightly normal dispersion mode-locked fiber laser are experimentally demonstrated with an identical configuration. A saturable absorber based on single-wall carbon nanotube is served as mode-locking device and an intrinsic birefringence spectral filtering is employed as a tunable inline filter. Consequently, with properly modifying pumping powers and orientations of polarization controller paddles, the operation regimes of the proposed laser could be reversibly switched between dissipative solitons and amplifier similaritons, and the characteristics of intermediate states are recorded. Tunable dissipative solitons with a tuning range of 38 nm and noise-like pulses could also alternatively be generated. This multi-state behavior switching could be attributed to the strong filtering caused by the limited gain bandwidth under strong pump strength. The experimental observations of these multi-state switchable transitions may offer insight into the pulse regime dynamics in the near-zero dispersion region and offer flexibility in multi-functional designs of the laser configuration, which would enable innovations in nonlinear optics and its applications.
