Abstract:Herein, a dithiol reagent containing o-nitrobenzyl structure was designed, and the polymer PKNB with alternating ketal and o-nitrobenzyl structures and the amphiphilic triblock copolymer mPEG-PKNB-mPEG were obtained from this reagent through thiol-ene click chemistry. Our results showed that mPEG-PKNB-mPEG and its nanoparticles showed excellent light/acid degradation ability, which will have great potential in the fields of drug, gene, or pesticide delivery.

Abstract:Polymeric absorbents were surface-engineered with photocatalysts for simultaneous adsorption and degradation of organic wastes in water using a facile Pickering emulsion polymerization method. This facile strategy not only overcome the low light energy utilization of traditional photocatalysts-polymer nanocomposites due to the core-shell structure, but also could convenient control the microstructure of the photocatalysts owing to the separated preparation procedure when compared to the direct growth method. Firstly, binary bismuth oxyhalide composed as BiOI0.5Cl0.5 was chosen to engineered polymeric absorbents due to its higher photodegradation efficiency especially. After the emulsification and polymerization process, BiOI0.5Cl0.5 acting as the stabilizer would be fixed on the surface of the functional polymeric absorbents to form PA@BiOI0.5Cl0.5. Batch experiments were lunched using phenol as the test substance, the results shown that PA@BiOI0.5Cl0.5 could remove phenol completely within a short time and could be reused without any treatments with a simultaneous adsorption and degradation process. Furthermore, polymeric absorbents were engineered with commercial TiO2 to prove the generality of this strategy.
Molecular Dynamics Simulations on Photoinduced Switchable Tg and Self-Healing Behaviors of Azobenzene-Containing Polymers

Abstract:Developing polymers with switchable glass transition temperature (Tg) can solve scientific challenges such as fracture healing of polymers with high Tg and processing of hard polymers without plasticizer at room temperature. The azobenzene-containing polymers, or the so-called azopolymers, are smart materials that show photoswitchable Tg and photoinduced motions, which can be used in fabrication of photoactuators. Here, healable and reprocessable models were constructed by using linear azopolymers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to study the behaviors of photo-induced bending, self-healing, and directional photofluidization of the azopolymers. A temporary modification of the C–N=N–C dihedral potential was applied to achieve the isomerization of azopolymer by using polymer consistent force-field (PCFF). The simulation results show that isomerization of azobenzene groups can lead to photoswitchable Tg of the azopolymers, which resulting in shape changes and different mechanical responses. Furthermore, the photoswitchable Tg makes the azopolymers much easier to heal under UV irradiation, and restore the mechanical properties under visible light irradiation. Finally, the mechanism of photoliquefaction was investigated, our results imply that the photoinduced trans–cis-trans cycles can reduce the mechanical properties and Tg values of azopolymers.
Visualized Degradation of Poly(alkynoate)s Toward Diols and Structure Controlled Multifunctional N-Heterocyclic Compounds

Abstract:Degradable polymers are highly desirable due to the tremendous growth of polymer wastes. Some polymers could be degraded under strong acidic or basic conditions toward unknown or unvalued products (i.e. downcycling). New methods to degrade polymers into monomers or high-value-added materials (i.e. upcycling) are more preferred for sustainable developments. In this work, linear and cross-linked poly(alkynoate)s were successfully degraded by benzamidine with 100% conversion into not only diols, a kind of monomers, but also high-value-added N-heterocyclic compounds of pyrimidone and imidazolone derivatives in high yields through controlling the reaction conditions. Notably, thanks to the AIE feature of the degraded products, the degradation process could be visualized under UV light via gradually increased luminescent intensity of the reaction mixtures, which facilitates the monitoring of the polymer degradation. Using this highly efficient degradation reaction, fluorescence patterns could be generated through microcontact printing (μCP) of the stamp on the thin films of poly(alkynoate)s. Moreover, the pyrimidone derivatives could be applied in bioimaging and inhibiting bacteria, and the imidazolone derivatives could be used for the detection and recovery of gold (III) ions from electronic waste and serve as the ﬂuorescent sensor to detect in situ generated amines from food spoilage. Thus, this work presents a visualized and high value product-selective degradation to solve the end-of-life issue of polymers.
Multifunctional Photodegradable Polymers for Reactive Micropatterns

Abstract:We report the first example of realizing the multi-functionalization of photodegradable polymers for the preparation of reactive micropatterns. Three o-nitrobenzaldehyde monomers (M1, M2, and M3) with ally!, propargyl, and epoxy groups were synthesized in high yields by the simple reactions of 5-hydroxy-2-nitro-benzaldehyde with ally! bromide, propargyl bromide, and epichlorohydrin, respectively. Passerini multicomponent polymerization (Passerini MCP) of M1, M2, or M3 with 1,6-hexanedioic acid and 1,6-diisocyanohexane generated three poly(ester-amide)s (P1, P2, and P3), the ester linkages of which were o-nitrobenzyl derivatives with functional groups from the corresponding monomers. Therefore, these polymers are photodegradable and can also be further modified by efficient click reactions like thiol-ene, copper catalyzed azide- alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), and epoxy amine reaction. Furthermore, Passerini MCP of M1, M2, and M3 with 1,6-hexanedioic acid and 1,6-diisocyanohexane could yield a photodegradable triply functional polymer (P4) containing all the three functional side groups which can be further modified by sequential click reactions. All the polymers were thoroughly characterized by H-1 NMR and GPC. Degradation of the polymers in solution under UV irradiation was investigated by UV vis and GPC, and they can all be photocleaved into oligomers and small molecules in 30 min. These functional polymers are extremely useful as positive photoresists to create reactive micropatterns. As an example, the triply functional polymer film was fabricated and cross-linked by epoxy amine reaction. After photoirradiation under a mask, reactive patterns with allyl and propargyl groups were obtained. Sequential modification of the reactive sites by CuAAC and thiol-ene reactions afforded multifunctional patterned surfaces with tunable properties as confirmed by scanning electron micrograph (SEM) and confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract:A photo-crosslinked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone, p-nitroaniline as the chromophore and cinnamyl group as the photo-sensitizer. The characterization of the polymer was made by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-vis, and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. An electro-optic film was obtained by spin coating of the polymer and corona poling then photo-crosslinking reaction. An external electro-optic measurement system was established based on the film and reflective light path configuration, and successfully applied to measure the electrical signals propagating on the under-test circuits. The poled and crosslinked film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. The measuring principle was analyzed by electro-optic tensor matrix and index ellipsoid methods. The results showed that the designed polymer film had the linear electro-optic effect, the voltage sensitivity of the system was measured to be 5 mv/ at the condition of 1 kHz input signal. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A General Approach for Photo-Oxidative Degradation of Various Polymers

Abstract:The escalating demand for plastics has resulted in a surge of plastic waste worldwide, posing a monumental environmental challenge. To address this issue, a versatile photo-oxidative degradation method applicable to seven distinct polymer families is proposed, comprising poly(isobutyl vinyl ether) (PIBVE), poly(2,3-dihydrofuran) (PDHF), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA), poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), poly(dimethyl acrylamide) (PDMA), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate) (PEGMEA), and even poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). This method employs photo-mediated hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) followed by oxidation to promote polymer degradation. This reaction is carried out under aerobic condition in the presence of iron trichloride (FeCl3) as a photocatalyst in combination with low-intensity purple light irradiation. The process can degrade up to 97% of the polymer in less than 3 h. This degradation process can be easily controlled by switching the light off, which allows for precise modulation of the degradation rate, enhancing the effectiveness of the method. Overall, this method provides a sustainable method for degrading various polymer types with low energy input.

Abstract:Photo-degradation of electric field poled alpha′-cyano-4′- nitro-4-N,N-dimethylaminostilbene (CNDS) doped polymer was investigated by second-harmonic generation (SHG), UV-Vis absorption and FTIR. We found that the addition of a cyano group makes CNDS much more easily photoisomerized, and thus destroys the molecular ordering in poled chromophore doped polymers, A comparison experiment revealed that the photo-isomerization of CNDS is even easier than that of a modal system of azobenzene, which shows that CNDS has potential applications, such as in optical switches.
Degradation Benefits Polymerization: Photo-Generated Self-Degradable Organo-Catalyst for Higher-Efficiency ATRP and Pure Polymers

Abstract:In the realm of polymer-based 3D photo printing, challenges arise from the side effects, notably the persistent presence of photocatalyst residues and metal contamination. These impurities pose significant risks in various applications, including electronics, biological tissues, and medical implants. At the same time, spatial-/time-/light-controlled 3D photo printing has been hindered by low-efficiency polymerization concerning both initiation and monomer conversion. To address these criti-cal issues, a pioneering concept, “degradation-inhibited quench,” is introduced and implemented within photopolymeriza-tion to solve the problems mentioned above. This innovative approach aims to produce pure polymers via higher-efficiency Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) with a unique class of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) derivatives as organo-photocatalysts at an extremely low concentration (as low as 50ppm). Through this approach, pure polymers with ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) have been successfully synthesized. For instance, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) achieved a monomer conversion of > 50%, a molecular weight of 2.1 million, and a dispersity of 1.38 after 12 h additional dark reaction. Notably, this novel photopolymerization method demonstrates applicability across a broad spectrum of monomers, with or without solvents, including acrylate, acrylic, styrene, and acrylonitrile. Mechanism insights revealed that the production of UHMW PMMA stemmed from the degradation of intermediate complex DPP•+/Br-, which originated from the photo initiation. This degradation inhibited the oxidative quenching of active propagating chain radicals, thereby significantly extending their lifespan. This groundbreaking concept embraces the potential for further development of highly effective organo-photocatalysts and reactive systems specifically tailored for 3D photopolymerization. Moreover, this novel spatial-/time-/light-controlled polymerization approach does not require any additional purification, offering energy and cost-saving manufacturing technology.

Abstract:A significant advancement in resolving the incompatibility between photodegradablity and photostability of polymer materials is reported by developing a novel cleavage reaction of the C–Si bond under simultaneous exposure to light and acid. The synergistic activation of polymer materials can be applied to a wide range of materials, including color‐tunable optical materials, tough elastic materials, and additive/subtractive 3D‐photoprinting materials. Material photocontrol has gained importance in process engineering and biomedical applications. However, highly photoreactive materials are intrinsically unstable to light, which limits their continuous use in lit environments owing to their gradual deterioration. Herein, synergistically photocontrollable materials in the presence of acid are developed to overcome the conventional trade‐off between their photoreactivity and photostability. Pyrenylsilicon derivatives are designed as synergistically cleavable moieties on C–Si bonds under simultaneous treatment with light and acid through photoinduced dearomatization and protonation to generate the Wheland intermediate, whereas the derivatives are highly stable to light or acid alone. The unique reactivity of pyrenylsilicon derivatives is applied to various polymer network crosslinkers, enabling synergistic control and degradation of materials with light and acids. Because of their high photostability in the absence of acids, these materials can be utilized as optical materials, robust elastomers, and 3D photoprinted gels.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a new type of amphiphilic poly(amino ester)s which can be completely degraded in aqueous media via H2O2 oxidation. The polymers were prepared by the controlled Michael-type addition polymerization of a phenylboronic pinacol ester-containing diacrylate and N-aminoethylpiperazine, followed by post-modification with mPEGSK-succinimide ester. Upon oxidation, the side chain phenylboronic esters will be transformed into phenol groups which can trigger the sequential self-immolative process to degrade the polymer main chain. Meanwhile, the amino groups on the polymer main chain are capable of trapping the highly active quinone methides generated in situ during the oxidative degradation of the polymers. Based on the detailed oxidation kinetics and products of several model compounds, the H2O2-triggered degradation of nanoparticles of these copolymers was investigated by NMR spectroscopy, GPC, and Nile red fluorescence probe. The results demonstrate that the poly(amino ester) backbones were completely degraded by H2O2, resulting in the dissociation of nanoparticles. Oxidative degradation rates of the nanoparticles could be accelerated by increasing the concentration of H2O2, the PEGylation degree, or the pH of the buffer. Interestingly, the in situ formed quinone methides could be captured by secondary amines due to their higher nucleophilicity than H2O. Of potential importance, these amphiphilic oxidation-responsive copolymers are sensitive to stimulation of 200 mu M H2O2; therefore, they may find application in the field of intelligent drug/gene delivery systems.

Abstract:We found that, although alpha'-cyano-4'-nitro-4-N, N-dimethylaminostilbene has larger hyperpolarizability than that of conventional 4'-N,N-dimethylamino-nitrostilbene, the addition of the cyano Group makes it much more easy to photo-isomerize, thus destroying the molecular ordering in poled chromophore doped polymers. Experimental evidence was obtained by monitoring the second-harmonic generation intensity, UV-Vis absorption spectrum, and FTIR spectrum. The photo-isomerization reaction process was monitored by optical pump induced absorption anisotropy measurement. Comparisons with the behaviour of a azobenzene dye are also made.

Abstract:We investigated the photochemical stability of an electro-optic (EO) polymer under laser irradiation at 1310nm to reveal photodegradation mechanisms. It was found that one-photon absorption excitation assisted with the thermal energy at the temperature is involved in the photodegradation process, in contrast to our previous studies at a wavelength of 1550nm where two-photon absorption excitation is involved in the photodegradation process. Thus, both the excitation wavelength and the thermal energy strongly affect to the degradation mechanism. In any cases, the photodegradation of EO polymers is mainly related to the generation of exited singlet oxygen.

Photodegradation of dye using Polythiophene/ZnO nanocomposite: A computational approach

Abstract:Incorporating nanostructured photocatalysts in polymers is a strategic way to obtain novel water purification systems. Here, we present density functional theory (DFT) study of Polythiophene/Zinc oxide (PTh/ZnO) nanocomposite with high photocatalytic performance and stability which exhibits superior degradation of alizarine dye under the visible light condition with interaction energy of -149.55 kcal/mol between conducting polymer (PTh) and metal oxide, with PTh sponsoring more number of electrons to the conduction band of ZnO. The electrical and optical properties of optimized geometries of PTh/ZnO nanocomposite were studied by frontier molecular orbital analysis, natural bond orbital (NBO) charge simulation, natural electronic configuration, and UV-vis absorption spectra. The modulation of the energy band gap (∽ 2.60 eV) and exciton binding energy (∽ 0.36 eV) causes visible light absorption and hence enhances the photodegradation activity of PTh/ZnO. NBO analysis evidences the electron accepting behavior of ZnO in the composites as it withdraws electron cloud density of about 0.14e from the polymer unit.
