Abstract:The development of degradable polymers has commanded significant attention over the past half century. Approaches have predominantly relied on ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters (e.g., lactones, lactides) and N-carboxyanhydrides, as well as radical ring-opening polymerizations of cyclic ketene acetals. In recent years, there has been a significant effort applied to expand the family of degradable polymers accessible via olefin metathesis polymerization. Given the excellent functional group tolerance of olefin metathesis polymerization reactions generally, a broad range of conceivable degradable moieties can be incorporated into appropriate monomers and thus into polymer backbones. This approach has proven particularly versatile in synthesizing a broad spectrum of degradable polymers including poly(ester), poly(amino acid), poly(acetal), poly(carbonate), poly(phosphoester), poly(phosphoramidate), poly(enol ether), poly(azobenzene), poly(disulfide), poly(sulfonate ester), poly(silyl ether), and poly(oxazinone) among others. In this review, we will highlight the main olefin metathesis polymerization strategies that have been used to access degradable polymers, including (i) acyclic diene metathesis polymerization, (ii) entropy-driven and (iii) enthalpy-driven ring-opening metathesis polymerization, as well as (iv) cascade enyne metathesis polymerization. In addition, the livingness or control of polymerization reactions via different strategies are highlighted and compared. Potential applications, challenges and future perspectives of this new library of degradable polyolefins are discussed. It is clear from recent and accelerating developments in this field that olefin metathesis polymerization represents a powerful synthetic tool towards degradable polymers with novel structures and properties inaccessible by other polymerization approaches.

Abstract:Degradable polymers are highly desirable due to the tremendous growth of polymer wastes. Some polymers could be degraded under strong acidic or basic conditions toward unknown or unvalued products (i.e. downcycling). New methods to degrade polymers into monomers or high-value-added materials (i.e. upcycling) are more preferred for sustainable developments. In this work, linear and cross-linked poly(alkynoate)s were successfully degraded by benzamidine with 100% conversion into not only diols, a kind of monomers, but also high-value-added N-heterocyclic compounds of pyrimidone and imidazolone derivatives in high yields through controlling the reaction conditions. Notably, thanks to the AIE feature of the degraded products, the degradation process could be visualized under UV light via gradually increased luminescent intensity of the reaction mixtures, which facilitates the monitoring of the polymer degradation. Using this highly efficient degradation reaction, fluorescence patterns could be generated through microcontact printing (μCP) of the stamp on the thin films of poly(alkynoate)s. Moreover, the pyrimidone derivatives could be applied in bioimaging and inhibiting bacteria, and the imidazolone derivatives could be used for the detection and recovery of gold (III) ions from electronic waste and serve as the ﬂuorescent sensor to detect in situ generated amines from food spoilage. Thus, this work presents a visualized and high value product-selective degradation to solve the end-of-life issue of polymers.
Designing Degradable Polymers from Tricycloalkenes via Complete Cascade Metathesis Polymerization

Abstract:Cascade metathesis polymerization has been developed as a promising method to synthesize complex but well-defined polymers from monomers containing multiple reactive functional groups. However, this approach has been limited to the monomers involving simple alkene/alkyne moieties or produced mainly non-degradable polymers. In this study, we demonstrate a complete cascade ring-opening/ring-closing metathesis polymerization (RORCMP) using various tricycloalkenes and two strategies for the efficient degradation. Through rational design of tricycloalkene monomers, the structure and reactivity relationship was explored. For example, tricycloalkenes with trans configuration in the central ring enabled faster and better selective cascade RORCMP than the corresponding cis isomers. Also, a 4-substituted cyclopentene moiety in the monomers significantly enhanced the overall cascade RORCMP performance, with the maximum turnover number (TON) reaching almost 10,000 and molecular weight up to 170 kg/mol using an amide-containing monomer. Furthermore, we achieved one-shot cascade multiple olefin metathesis polymerization using tricycloalkenes and a diacrylate, to produce new highly A,B-alternating copolymers with full degradability. Lastly, we successfully designed xylose-based tricycloalkenes to give well-defined polymers that underwent ultra-fast and complete degradation under mild conditions.

Abstract:The precise synthesis of chiral polymers remains a significant challenge in polymer chemistry, particularly for applications in advanced biomedical and electronic materials. The development of degradable polymers is important for eco‐friendly and advanced materials. Here, we introduce a stereo‐controlled degradable polymer via cascade enyne metathesis polymerization and enantioselective acetal synthesis through Pd‐catalyzed asymmetric hydroamination. This approach allows for the creation of chiral acetal‐based polymers with controlled stereochemistry and degradability, highlighting their potential for use in drug delivery and electronic applications. Abstract:A consecutive radical addition-coupling reaction induced by spin-trapping agent is applied to produce degradable multisegmented polymer using alpha,omega-dibromo polymer as a precursor. The macroradical generated by single electron transfer process catalyzed by Cu/PMDETA from alpha,omega-dibromo polymer can be efficiently captured by 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP), which results in nitroxide radical. The in situ formed nitroxide radical immediately undergoes cross-coupling reaction with polymeric radical, generating block polymer bridged with alkoxyamine moiety. The consecutive radical addition-coupling reaction generates multisegmented polymer via step-growth mechanism. Different multisegmented polymers have been prepared from alpha,omega-dibromo-PS, PtBA, and PtBA-PS-PtBA. The block number of multisegmented polymers can be tailored by varying the feed ratio of alpha,omega-dibromo precursor to MNP. The multisegmented polymer can be degraded in the presence of hydrogen atom donor or air, and the molecular weight distribution transformed back into shape of its original precursor as it is conjugated by alkoxyamine moieties. Abstract:To establish a sustainable society, the development of polymer materials capable of reverting into monomers on demand is crucial. Traditional methods rely on breaking labile bonds such as esters in the main chain, which limits applicability to polymers that consist of robust covalent bonds. We found that the integration of directing groups allowed the engineering of resilient polymers with built-in recyclability. Our study showcases phenylene ether-based polymers fortified with directing groups, which can be selectively disassembled under nickel catalysts via selective cleavage of carbon–oxygen bonds. Notably, these polymers exhibit exceptional chemical stability towards acids, bases, and oxidizing agents, while being degradable to well-defined, repolymerizable molecules in the presence of a catalyst. Our findings allow for the development of next-generation polymer materials that are chemically recyclable by design.

Abstract:Our society has been pursuing high-performance biodegradable polymers made from facile methods and readily available monomers. Here, we demonstrate a library of enzyme-degradable polymers with desirable properties from the first reported step polyaddition of diamines, COS, and diacrylates. The polymers contain in-chain ester and thiourethane groups, which can serve as lipase-degradation and hydrogen-bonding physical crosslinking points, respectively, resulting in possible biodegradability as well as upgraded mechanical and thermal properties. Also, the properties of the polymers are scalable due to the versatile method and the wide variety of monomers. We obtain 46 polymers with tunable performance covering high-Tm crystalline plastics, thermoplastic elastomers, and amorphous plastics by regulating polymer structure. Additionally, the polymerization method is highly efficient, atom-economical, quantitatively yield, metal- and even catalyst-free. Overall, the polymers are promising green materials given their degradability, simple and modular synthesis, remarkable and tunable properties, and readily available monomers.

Abstract:To cope with the severe plastic waste crisis, massive efforts are made to develop sustainable polymer materials whose degradation involves a disposing and decomposing to small molecule (DDM) and/or a chemical recycling to monomer (CRM) process. Polyacetals, a type of pH-responsive polymers, are degradable under acidic conditions, while highly stable under neutral and basic circumstances. As for their synthesis, the cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of cyclic acetals is an elegant and promising approach, though suffering from fatal side reactions and polymerization-depolymerization equilibrium. Recent development in CRM restimulates the interest in the long-forgotten CROP method due to its inherent depolymerization characteristics. In terms of the end-of-life options, polyacetals are recyclable materials with both DDM and CRM potentials. They not only expand the scope of materials for closed-loop recycling but also help to tune the degradation properties of traditional polyesters and polyolefins. This review aims to discuss the synthesis of various polyacetals by CROP and their degradation properties from the perspectives of 1) polymerization of cyclic acetals, dioxepins, and hemiacetal esters, 2) copolymerization of cyclic acetals with heterocyclic or vinyl monomers, and 3) degradation and recycling properties of the related polymers.

Abstract:We demonstrate that electrochemical-induced decarboxylation enables reliable post-polymerization modification and degradation of polymers. Polymers containing N-(acryloxy)phthalimides were subjected to electrochemical decarboxylation under mild conditions, which led to the formation of transient alkyl radicals. By installing these redox-active units, we systematically modified the pendent groups and chain ends of polyacrylates. This approach enabled the production of poly(ethylene-co-methyl acrylate) and poly(propylene-co-methyl acrylate) copolymers, which are difficult to synthesize by direct polymerization. Spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques reveal these transformations are near-quantitative on several polymer systems. Electrochemical decarboxylation also enables the degradation of all-methacrylate poly(N-(methacryloxy)phthalimide-co-methyl methacrylate) copolymers with a degradation efficiency of >95%. Chain cleavage is achieved through the decarboxylation of the N-hydroxyphthalimide ester and subsequent β-scission of the backbone radical. Electrochemistry is thus shown to be a powerful tool in selective polymer transformations and controlled macromolecular degradation.

Abstract:Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used materials in the world, but it is virtually undegradable and quickly accumulates in nature, which may contaminate the environment. We utilized the cobalt-mediated radical copolymerization (CMRP) of ethylene and cyclic ketene acetals (CKAs) to effectively incorporate ester groups into PE backbone as cleavable structures to make PE-based copolymer degradable under mild conditions. The content of ethylene and ester units in the produced copolymer could be finely regulated by CKA concentration or ethylene pressure. Also, the copolymerization of ethylene and CKA with other functional vinyl monomers can produce functional and degradable PE-based copolymer. All the formed PE-based copolymers could degrade in the presence of trimethylamine (Et3N).

Abstract:We report the synthesis of a degradable polyphosphoramidate via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with the Grubbs initiator (IMesH2)(C5H5N)2(Cl)2Ru═CHPh. Controlled ROMP of a low ring strain diazaphosphepine-based cyclic olefin was achieved at low temperatures to afford well-defined polymers that readily undergo degradation in acidic conditions via the cleavage of the acid-labile phosphoramidate linkages. The diazaphosphepine monomer was compatible in random and block copolymerizations with phenyl and oligo(ethylene glycol) bearing norbornenes. This approach introduced partial or complete degradability into the polymer backbones. With this chemistry, we accessed amphiphilic poly(diazaphosphepine-norbornene) copolymers that could be used to prepare micellar nanoparticles.
Understanding Degradation Dynamics of Azomethine-containing Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Understanding the influence of chemical environments on the degradation properties of conjugated polymers is an important task for the continued development of sustainable materials with potential utility in biomedical and optoelectronic applications. Azomethine-containing polymers were synthesized via palladium-catalyzed direct arylation polymerization (DArP) and used to study fundamental degradation trends upon exposure to acid. Shifts in the UV-vis absorbance spectra and the appearance/disappearance of aldehyde and imine diagnostic peaks within the 1H NMR spectra indicate that the polymers will degrade in the presence of acid. After degradation, the aldehyde starting material was recovered in high yields and was shown to maintain structural integrity when compared with commercial starting materials. Solution-degradation studies found that rates of degradation vary from 5 h to 90 s depending on the choice of solvent or acid used for hydrolysis. Additionally, the polymer was shown to degrade in the presence of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which makes them potentially useful as PFAS-sensitive sensors. Ultimately, this research provides strategies to control the degradation kinetics of azomethine-containing polymers through the manipulation of environmental factors and guides the continued development of azomethine-based materials.

Abstract:The incorporation of heteroatom-containing weak bonds along polymer backbones has become a pop-ular tool to accelerate degradation. Many methods have already been reported for the synthesis of degradable heteroatom-containing polymers based mainly on conventional step-growth polymerization and chain-growth ring-opening polymerization (ROP). In recent years, ring-opening metathesis polymer-ization (ROMP) has evolved as an emerging approach for the synthesis of various types of degradable polymers, from carbocyclic norbornene derivatives to heterocyclic olefin monomers. Classic ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts exhibit not only high reactivity to C = C double bonds but also high tolerance to po-lar functional groups. Hence, a rich range of functional groups can be incorporated into cyclic olefin monomers and then transferred to the polymer backbones. This review covers the synthesis of the various heteroatom-containing degradable (co)polymers via ROMP, including poly(thio)acetals/polyketals, polyorthoesters, polyesters, polycarbonates, polyphosphoesters/polyphosphoamidates, poly(enol ether)s, poly(silyl ether)s, polydisulfides, polyketones, polyacylsilanes, polyamides, and polyureas, as well as their degradable mechanisms under different conditions.
