Abstract:Aromaticity is a phenomenon that is linked to the improved stability of organic compounds. Its occurrence is predicted by Hückel's rule, which states that an aromatic compound must be flat, fully conjugated and have (4 n + 2) π electrons. The most encountered aromatic structure is the benzenoid ring, which is observed in a wide variety of pharmaceuticals and organic materials. Expanded monocyclic structures are also of substantial interest as they would allow one to experimentally investigate the relationships between aromaticity, stability, reactivity and ring size. However, larger rings such as [10]annulene are often non-planar and non-aromatic due to angle strain present in their planar conformation. Inspired by earlier computational work, we show here that the presence of both a fused cyclopropane and an internal alkyne in a [10]annulene framework provides a planar and highly aromatic structure. The resulting dehydro[10]annulene is bench stable and can be stored for extended periods of time.

Abstract:Dehydro[10]annulene has recently been prepared experimentally and is considered to be a highly rigid structure with planar properties. In this paper, the electronic structure and bonding properties of dehydro[10]annulene have been studied by means of molecular orbital (MO), density of states (DOS), bond order (BO) and interaction region indicator (IRI). The delocalization properties of out‐of‐plane and in‐plane π‐electrons (πout‐ and πin‐electrons) of the bond region are studied by using localized orbital location (LOL). The anisotropy of the induced current density (AICD), iso‐chemical shielding surface (ICSS) and anisotropy of the gauge including magnetically induced current method (GIMIC) were used to investigate the molecular response to external magnetic field, including the induced ring current and the magnetic shielding properties. The results show that the electron delocalization of dehydro[10]annulene is mainly contributed by πout system. The apparent clockwise current in the πout system proves that dehydro[10]annulene is πout aromatic. Finally, the photophysical properties and (hyper)polarizability of dehydro[10]annulene were studied by TD‐DFT calculation. The results show that dehydro[10]annulene has strong local excitation properties. Its (hyper)polarizability decreases with the increase of frequency and has the characteristics of nonlinear anisotropy.

Abstract:Reacting (at 0 degrees C) a mixture of CH2Cl2 and monobromo[8]annulene (C8H7Br) with potassium tert-butoxide in hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) and following with exposure to potassium metal led to the formation of the anion radical of an HMPA-[6.1.0]bicyclononatetraene condensation product, in which two HMPA fragments are geminal and attached to the number 9 carbon. When the reaction sequence is carried out in THF, the dianion of cycloprop[8]annulene is predominantly formed. Neutral cycloprop[8]annulene can be isolated via the I2 oxidation of the THF solution. The NMR analysis reveals that the eight-membered ring is nearly planar, and the three-membered ring is more like a dimethylenecyclopropane than it is like a cyclopropene. Further, the chemical shifts due to the protons on the eight-membered ring are nearly 2 ppm further upfield than are those for [8]annulene itself, suggesting a paratropic ring current.

Abstract:The exploration of annulene's conformation, electronic properties and aromaticity has generated enduring interest over the years, yet it continues to present formidable challenges for annulenes with more than ten carbon atoms. In this study, we present the synthesis of a stable [10]cyclo-para-phenylmethine derivative (1), which bears a resemblance to [10]annulene. 1 can be readily oxidized into its respective cations, wherein electrons are effectively delocalized along the backbone, resulting in different conformations and aromaticity. Both 1 and its tetracation (14+·4SbF6-) exhibit a nearly planar conformation with a rectangular shape, akin to the E,Z,E,Z,Z-[10]annulene. In contrast, the radical cation (1•+·SbCl6-) possesses a doubly twisted Hückel topology. Furthermore, the dication (12+·2SbCl6-) displays conformational flexibility in solution and crystalizes with the simultaneous presence of Möbius-twisted (1a2+·2SbCl6-) and Hückel-planar (1b2+·2SbCl6-) isomers in its unit cell. Detailed experimental measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that: (1) 1 demonstrates localized aromaticity with an alternating benzenoid/quinoid structure; (2) 1a2+·2SbCl6- and 1b2+·2SbCl6- with 48π electrons are weakly Möbius aromatic and Hückel antiaromatic, respectively; (3) 14+·4SbF6- exhibits Hückel aromaticity (46π) and open-shell diradical character.

Abstract:We report a robust strategy for tuning the electronic structure and chemical stability of π-conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs). By fusing two cyclopentadienyl rings in the peri-tetracene bay regions, we introduce antiaromatic character into the π-system, leading to unique photophysical and electronic properties. A stable mesityl-substituted dicyclopenta-peri-tetracene derivative was synthesized through stepwise formylation/intramolecular cyclization at the bay regions of the dihydro peri-tetracene precursor, followed by oxidative dehydrogenation. This compound features an open-shell singlet diradical ground state, global antiaromaticity, exceptional stability under ambient conditions, and amphoteric redox behavior with a small energy gap. Its dication also possesses an open-shell singlet ground state, and its structure was identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, revealing a unique [14]annulene-within-[22]annulene global aromatic structure. In contrast, the dianion exhibits a closed-shell singlet ground state. This work provides valuable insights for designing and synthesizing novel open-shell PHs with tunable electronic structures and remarkable stability.

Abstract:A novel kind of monocyclic and dicyclic dehydro[20]annulenes exhibiting specific sizes and topologies from regioselective unilateral ortho-diethynyl PDI, is developed by Cu-catalyzed Glaser-Hay homo-coupling and cross-coupling. Through the integration of electron-deficient PDI chromophores into the dehydroannulene scaffolding, these macrocycles exhibit intense and characteristic absorption properties and the degenerated LUMO levels. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis unambiguously revealed unique porous supramolecular structures, which display micropore characteristics with surface area of 120.74 m(2) g(-1). A moderate electron mobility of 0.05 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) for chlorine-free dehydro[20]annulene based on micrometer-sized single-crystalline transistors was witnessed. The porous and yet semiconducting features signify the prospects of PDI-integrated dehydroannulenes in organic optoelectronics.

Abstract:AbstractAromatic metalla‐annulenes are important aromatic compounds, research into which has been mainly concentrated on metal‐benzenes and their lower homologues. Reports on their superior homologs are rare, and this has greatly limited the systematic study of their properties. In this work, a series of osma‐dehydro[11]annulenes with good air and thermal stability were prepared in high yields through a simple [10+1] strategy, by incorporating a metal fragment into conjugated ten‐carbon chains in a one‐pot reaction. They are the first monometallic aromatic metalla‐[n]annulenes with the ring size larger than 6, and their Craig‐Hückel hybrid aromaticity is supported by various physical and computational parameters. Besides, these complexes show versatile reactivities, not only giving further evidence for their aromaticity, but also demonstrating their physical and chemical properties can easily be regulated. This work enriches the metalla‐aromatic chemistry, and provides a new avenue for the synthesis of large metalla‐annulenes with different ring sizes.

Abstract:We report a unique synthetic route to benzo[7]annulene derivatives. When benzylidene malonates having a 1-( N , N -dialkylamino)alkyl group at the ortho -position are treated with a stoichiometric amount of M(OTf) 3 (M = Sc, Yb, Gd), three transformations ([1,4]-hydride shift/isomerization into an enamine/intramolecular Stork enamine acylation) proceed sequentially to afford various benzo[7]annulene derivatives in moderate chemical yields. To our knowledge, the present reaction is the first example of an internal redox reaction involving a [1, n ]-hydride shift/( n +3)-cyclization process. Abstract:The 12-membered-ring metallacycles [mer-Re{≡CCH=C(R)C≡C-}Cl(PMe2 Ph)3 )]2 (R=CMe3 , 1-adamantyl), which are organometallic analogues of antiaromatic octadehydro[12]annulene, are prepared by heating the methyl carbyne complexes mer-Re{≡CCH=C(R)C≡CH}(CH3 )Cl(PMe2 Ph)3 . An intermolecular σ-bond metathesis between the Re-CH3 bond and the acetylenic C-H bond is proposed for their formation.

Abstract:A detailed theoretical study on the rearrangement of 2-(1,6-methano[10]annulenyl)-3,3-dimethylmethylenecyclopropane 1 to a mixture of two diastereomeric 1,6-methano[10]annulenylisopropylidenecyclopropanes, 3 and 5, is presented in this paper. The computational results reproduce experimental findings and confirm the conjecture that the rearrangement proceeds through the biradical intermediate 2, which is greatly stabilized by the 1,6-methano[10]annulenyl group and is long-lived enough to undergo a rotation before ring closure. In addition, the origin of the stereochemistry observed in the rearrangement has been discussed.

Abstract:Several novel types of cyclophanes were efficiently synthesized via an intermolecular palladium-catalyzed cross-benzannulation of cyclic enynes and diynes. These types of cyclophanes are not accessible through an intramolecular mode of the homo-benzannulation protocol, reported previously. Cyclic reactants (enynes and diynes) were readily prepared in reasonable yields from commercially available materials using known procedures. The fact that the cyclic Z-enyne 29, in contrast to its E-counterpart, underwent benzannulation to produce the cyclophane 28 brought additional support for the necessity of having an E-hydrogen atom at the terminal olefin moiety of nonactivated enynes, which was found previously in the benzannulation of the acyclic susbstrates.

Abstract:Classically, aromaticity portrays the unique stability and peculiar reactivities of cyclic planar conjugated systems with (4n+2) π electrons. Understanding the electronic environments in new chemical frameworks through experimental and theoretical validation is central to this ever‐expanding theme in chemical science. Such investigations in curved π‐surfaces have special significance as they can unravel the variations when the planarity requirement is slightly lifted. In this report, we discuss the synthesis, spectroscopic and theoretical studies involving a new group of cyclazine analogs having a charged aza[10]annulene periphery, centrally locked through a sp3 carbon. Magnetic anisotropic effects arising from electron delocalization through its curved π‐surface were mapped through a specific set of chemical groups introduced through this sp3 carbon. The nucleus‐independent chemical shift calculations revealed negative chemical shift values, indicating the aromatic nature of the aza[10] annulene rim. This is corroborated by a clockwise diatropic ring current, evident from anisotropy‐induced current density analysis. Variations in the chemical shift of NMR signals in these systems were also computationally examined through isotropic chemical shielding surface analysis.

Abstract:N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed desymmetrizing reactions of olefins have rapidly developed in recent years; however, the origins of the chemo- and stereoselectivities of these reactions remain poorly understood. Herein, we propose a mechanistic map for these reactions to predict how chemo- and stereoselectivities are controlled by different active intermediates (i.e., Breslow and acylazolium intermediates). Abstract:Described herein is the synthesis of stable oxonium-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by the rhodium-catalyzed C-H activation/annulations of naphthalene-type aldehydes with internal alkynes. This protocol provides four divergent reaction types, including two unexpected annulations with an oxygen transposition process, which lead to diverse types of phenalenyl-fused pyrylium cations comprising a four-, five-, or six-ring-fused π-conjugated core. The annulations exhibit an exquisite regioselectivity and a high tolerance of sensitive functional groups. These PAHs feature intriguing photophysical properties such as full-color tunable fluorescence emission, high quantum yield, and positively charged core, and can be reduced easily to the phenalenyl radicals.
