Abstract:We report a robust strategy for tuning the electronic structure and chemical stability of π-conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs). By fusing two cyclopentadienyl rings in the peri-tetracene bay regions, we introduce antiaromatic character into the π-system, leading to unique photophysical and electronic properties. A stable mesityl-substituted dicyclopenta-peri-tetracene derivative was synthesized through stepwise formylation/intramolecular cyclization at the bay regions of the dihydro peri-tetracene precursor, followed by oxidative dehydrogenation. This compound features an open-shell singlet diradical ground state, global antiaromaticity, exceptional stability under ambient conditions, and amphoteric redox behavior with a small energy gap. Its dication also possesses an open-shell singlet ground state, and its structure was identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, revealing a unique [14]annulene-within-[22]annulene global aromatic structure. In contrast, the dianion exhibits a closed-shell singlet ground state. This work provides valuable insights for designing and synthesizing novel open-shell PHs with tunable electronic structures and remarkable stability.

Binding Affinities and Spectra of Complexes Formed by Dehydrotetrapyrido[20]annulene and Small Molecules

Abstract:Theoretical study on the binding affinities of dehydrotetrapyrido[20] annulene to the alkene and aromatic molecules was performed using the AM1 and DFT methods. It indicated that the host possesses the ability to bind the above molecules since the binding energies of the complexes were negative. The complexes were stabilized via the hydrogen bonding, static effect, and π — π stacking interaction between the host and guest molecules. Based on the B3LYP/3-21G optimized geometries, the electronic, IR, and NMR spectra were calculated using the INDO/CIS, AM1, and B3LYP/3-21G methods, respectively. Due to the hydrogen bonding, the first absorption maxima in the electronic spectra of studied complexes were blue-shifted, whereas the main IR frequencies for some of the complexes were red-shifted. At the same time, the chemical shifts of carbon atoms forming the bonds in the complexes were lower, compared to those of the host.

Abstract:The exploration of annulene's conformation, electronic properties and aromaticity has generated enduring interest over the years, yet it continues to present formidable challenges for annulenes with more than ten carbon atoms. In this study, we present the synthesis of a stable [10]cyclo-para-phenylmethine derivative (1), which bears a resemblance to [10]annulene. 1 can be readily oxidized into its respective cations, wherein electrons are effectively delocalized along the backbone, resulting in different conformations and aromaticity. Both 1 and its tetracation (14+·4SbF6-) exhibit a nearly planar conformation with a rectangular shape, akin to the E,Z,E,Z,Z-[10]annulene. In contrast, the radical cation (1•+·SbCl6-) possesses a doubly twisted Hückel topology. Furthermore, the dication (12+·2SbCl6-) displays conformational flexibility in solution and crystalizes with the simultaneous presence of Möbius-twisted (1a2+·2SbCl6-) and Hückel-planar (1b2+·2SbCl6-) isomers in its unit cell. Detailed experimental measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that: (1) 1 demonstrates localized aromaticity with an alternating benzenoid/quinoid structure; (2) 1a2+·2SbCl6- and 1b2+·2SbCl6- with 48π electrons are weakly Möbius aromatic and Hückel antiaromatic, respectively; (3) 14+·4SbF6- exhibits Hückel aromaticity (46π) and open-shell diradical character.

Abstract:Metal-containing aromatic systems (metalla-aromatics) are unique and important both experimentally and theoretically. Among metalla-aromatics, six-membered metallabenzenes and metallabenzynes have attracted much attention in recent years. However, reports on their superior homologues are rare. In this work, the first series of aromatic dicupra[10]annulenes were isolated from the reaction of dilithio reagents and copper salts. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed dicupra[10]annulenes with averaged bond lengths. (7)Li NMR spectra and theoretical calculations revealed considerable aromatic character. XPS data suggested that the oxidation state of Cu atom in dicupra[10]annulenes was more likely to be Cu(I), indicating that the dilithio moieties in dicupra[10]annulenes participated as noninnocent ligands. This work demonstrates a novel approach to construct macrocyclic metalla-aromatics.

Abstract:A series of tetraaza [14] annulene nickel (II) macrocycles, which have cis- and trans-isomers, were synthesized for the first time by the reaction of template effect and electrophilic substitution. All of them have been characterized via EA, IR, UV, H-1 NMR and MS. Especially the data of H-1 NMR spectra demonstrate that the two isomers really exist. In addition, the electrochemical behavior of the above compounds, together with another series of tetraaza [14] annulene nickel (II) complexes, have been studied. We draw the conclusions of the CV peaks by using the transient and ESR electrochemical methods, discussed the mechanism of forming films on the electrode surface by electropolymerization.

Abstract:The reaction chemistry of metalla-aromatics is fundamentally interesting. In this work, we find that tetralithio spiroaromatic palladole and platinacycle complexes 1 undergo selective two-electron oxidation with 1,2-dibromoethane as a mild oxidant, affording their corresponding dilithio spiro metallacyclopentadienes 3. These dilithio spiro complexes 3 can be reductively transformed to their corresponding tetralithio spiroaromatic complexes 1 with metallic lithium. When treated with an appropriate amount of oxidants, both 1 and 3 can generate 1,4-dihydropentalene derivatives 5 via a mechanism involving reductive elimination and silyl migration, as supported by density functional theory calculation. Similarly, tetralithio aromatic dicupra[10]annulene 2 can also undergo the reversible two-electron redox reaction mentioned above. These results improve our understanding of the reactivity of metalla-aromatic compounds.

All of them have been characterized via EA, IR, UV, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS. The electrochemical behaviors of these compounds have also been studied by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract:Metalloaromatic species are unique and important both experimentally and theoretically. Significant progress has been made during the past few decades. New aromatic systems have challenged and extended the concept of aromaticity remarkably. In this perspective, recent results on the study of the dianion aromatic metalloles and their corresponding analogues are reviewed. These include the dilithio group 14 metalloles, group 13 metalloles and transition metal metalloles. X-ray crystallography has made a key contribution to the understanding of the structures. Various theoretical tools, such as NICS and AdNDP, make it possible to measure the aromaticity beyond Hückel's rule. The dianion butadiene skeletons play a key role in these metalloles and can be regarded as non-innocent ligands, which accept the electrons from the metal center and thus form the aromatic rings. By simply changing the central metals to different metals, the metallole analogues such as dicupra[10]annulenes and spiroaromatic palladoles can also be generated, which opens a door to synthesize other metalla-macrocyclic aromatics. Key challenges and envisioned opportunities for the future, such as applying these dianion metalloles as novel ligands of transition metals and generating new types of organometallic aromatic system, are also discussed.
Crystallographic evidence for global aromaticity in the di-anion and tetra-anion of a cyclophane hydrocarbon

Abstract:[2 4 ]Paracyclophanetetraene is a classic example of a macrocyclic hydrocarbon that becomes globally aromatic on reduction to the di-anion, and switches to globally anti-aromatic in the tetra-anion. This redox activity makes it promising as an electrode material for batteries. Here, we report the solid-state structures of the di- and tetra-anions of this cyclophane, in several coordination environments. The changes in bond length on reduction yield insights into the global aromaticity of the di-anion (26 π electrons), and anti-aromaticity of the tetra-anion (28 π electrons), that were previously deduced from NMR spectra of species generated in situ . The experimental geometries of the aromatic di-anion and anti-aromatic tetra-anion from X-ray crystallographic data match well with gas-phase calculated structures, and reproduce the low symmetry expected in the anti-aromatic ring. Comparison of coordinated and naked anions confirms that metal coordination has little effect on the bond lengths. The UV-vis-NIR absorption spectra show a sharp intense peak at 878 nm for the di-anion, whereas the tetra-anion gives a broad spectrum typical of an anti-aromatic system.

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of diindeno-fused dibenzo[a,h]anthracene derivatives (DIDBA-2Cl, DIDBA-2Ph, and DIDBA-2H) with different degrees of non-planarity using three substituents (chloro, phenyl, and hydrogen) of various sizes. The planarization of their cores, as evidenced by the decreased end-to-end torsional angles, was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Their enhanced energy gaps with twisting were investigated by a combination of spectroscopic and electrochemical methods with density functional theory, which showed a transition from singlet open-shell to closed-shell configuration. Moreover, their doubly reduced states, DIDBA-2Ph(2-) and DIDBA-2H(2-), were achieved by chemical reduction. The structures of dianions were identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, which elucidated that the electron charging further distorted the backbones. The electronic structure of the dianions was demonstrated by experimental and theoretical approaches, suggesting decreased energy gaps with larger non-planarity, different from the neutral species.

Abstract:A series of new crown-ether annelated TTF derivatives 2a, 2b, 2c, 3 and 5 have been synthesized and characterized by melting points, NMR, IR and ESI-MS. The crystal structure of compound 3, 2, 3-dithia-(5',8'-dioxaoctyl)-6,7-ethylenedithiatetrathiafulvalene, has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Redox properties of all these compounds have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and each compound shows two reversible single-electron redox couples. The results indicate that 3 is responsive for Li+, but not to other alkali metal cations, such as Na+ and K+. Although with the same cavity, compounds 2c and 5 show marked changes upon the addition of sodium perchlorate, while there is no significant response for 2a and 2b at the same condition.

Abstract:Herein we explored the synthesis and functionalization of NDI-hydroazaacenes, via two routes, at both the peripheries along the long-axis of the molecules. For the first time, we successfully performed cyanation reactions at the hydroazaacenes without the use of Pd-catalyst, enabling straightforward access to symmetric and asymmetrically substituted molecules. We also accessed NDI-hydroazaacenes with shorter substituents at the axial-positions allowing us to realize the single crystal data, which interestingly revealed π-stacked dimers with slipped orientation with the axial groups self-sorted in a syn-syn and anti-anti fashion. The tetracyano-substituted NDI-hydroazaacene showed a DFT predicted LUMO of −4.34 eV, which makes it the most electron-deficient hydroazaacene reported till date. In addition, we explored the amphoteric-redox properties of the NDI-hydroazaacene by generating radical anion/dianion and radical cation states. The molecules showed interesting J-type aggregation with concomitant color change from pink to blue in solution. Further, the molecules exhibited bright-red emission with quantum yields of 29–72 %. Computational studies showed the aromaticity/antiaromaticity can be subtly modulated by the substituents (H/Br/CN) on the rings.

Abstract:Dehydro[10]annulene has recently been prepared experimentally and is considered to be a highly rigid structure with planar properties. In this paper, the electronic structure and bonding properties of dehydro[10]annulene have been studied by means of molecular orbital (MO), density of states (DOS), bond order (BO) and interaction region indicator (IRI). The delocalization properties of out‐of‐plane and in‐plane π‐electrons (πout‐ and πin‐electrons) of the bond region are studied by using localized orbital location (LOL). The anisotropy of the induced current density (AICD), iso‐chemical shielding surface (ICSS) and anisotropy of the gauge including magnetically induced current method (GIMIC) were used to investigate the molecular response to external magnetic field, including the induced ring current and the magnetic shielding properties. The results show that the electron delocalization of dehydro[10]annulene is mainly contributed by πout system. The apparent clockwise current in the πout system proves that dehydro[10]annulene is πout aromatic. Finally, the photophysical properties and (hyper)polarizability of dehydro[10]annulene were studied by TD‐DFT calculation. The results show that dehydro[10]annulene has strong local excitation properties. Its (hyper)polarizability decreases with the increase of frequency and has the characteristics of nonlinear anisotropy.
