Abstract:Although there was significant advancement on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formation, current mechanisms are still limited in providing an integrated and accurate scheme of PAH yield in combustion conditions; thus, a more detailed and comprehensive understanding is necessary. This work provides a systematic investigation of PAH growth by phenylacetylene addition. A combination of the density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p)) and the complete basis set method (CBS-QB3) is utilized to calculate the potential energy surfaces. The reaction system is initiated by the H elimination reaction of phenylacetylene + H → o-ethynylphenyl + H2, and then, the addition reaction of phenylacetylene and o-ethynylphenyl can produce PAHs with one, two, three, and four rings. The temperature- and pressure-dependent reaction rate coefficients are calculated via a combination of conventional transition state theory (TST) and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) theory with solving the master equation in the temperature range of 500-2500 K and at the pressure range of 0.01-10 atm. There are 263 species and 65 reactions in this reaction system. It shows that the rate constants of this reaction system are highly temperature-dependent and slightly sensitive to the pressure at temperatures lower than 1300 K. To evaluate the yield distributions of various PAH products in the whole reaction network, a closed 0-D batch reactor model in Chemkin is used to calculate the C6H5C2H-C2H2-H-Ar reaction system. The results showed that the prevailing products of this system are three-ring PAHs with side chain structures. Compared with the traditional HACA pathways, the investigated reaction system presents higher efficiency in large PAH formations, which could subsequently promote the formation of soot particles. The phenylacetylene and o-ethynylphenyl reaction network emphasizes the importance of species with side chains, and it enriches current PAH growth pathways aside from the addition of small species such as C2H2.

Abstract:The growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) can proceed via multiple chemical mechanisms. The mechanism of naphthyl radical and vinylacetylene (C4H4) addition reaction has been systematically investigated in this computational study. A combination of DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p), CCSD/6-311+G(d,p) and CBS-QB3 methods were performed to calculate the potential energy surfaces. It revealed that the products, including phenanthrene, anthracene, a PAH with a five-membered ring structure, and PAH with a C4H3 radical substitution, can be formed in A2-1 (1-naphthyl)+C4H4 and A2-2 (2-naphthyl) +C4H4 reaction networks. The reaction rate constants at 0.1-100 atm were evaluated by RRKM theory by solving the master equation in the temperature range of 800–2500 K, which showed that the rate constants of reactions A2-1 (A2-2)+C4H4→product+H are highly temperature-dependent but nearly pressure-independent. The distribution of products was investigated in a 0-D batch reactor, wherein the initial reactant concentrations were taken from experimental measurements. The results showed that adduct intermediates were the main products at low temperature (T < 1000 K), and the phenanthrene and PAH with C4H3 radical substitution became the dominant products at temperatures where PAHs and soot form in flames (T > 1000 K). It was observed that a significant amount of phenanthrene is formed from PAH with a C4H3 radical substitution with the assistance of H atom. Reaction pathway sensitivity analysis for the PAH radical+C4H4 reaction system was performed and showed that the new benzene rings are more likely to be generated near the zig-zag edge surface site instead of the free edge. For the development of a PAH mechanism, the analogous treatment of rate constants for larger PAH radical + C4H4 reaction system are discussed. The formation rate of naphthalene from the reaction of phenyl+C4H4 was found to be very close to that of phenanthrene from the reaction of naphthyl+C4H4, suggesting that the analogous treatment of the rates is reasonable in PAH mechanisms.

Abstract:Detailed mechanisms of PAH growth involving methylene (CH2) were studied using accurate ab initio density functional theory B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) calculations, as well as approximate QCISD(T,full)/6-311++G(3df,2pd) calculations. The PAH growth can be divided into five essential reaction steps, namely, addition C2H2 -> intramolecular hydrogen migration -> addition CH2 -> cyclization -> H-elimination. The aliphatic species of indene and 1H-phenalene are found in the pathways of PAH growth, which is in accord with the experimental results that reveal the formation of aliphatic species in flames. It was found that the simultaneous removal of two H atoms in one reaction step is feasible in PAH evolution, and this can reasonably interpret the absence of a H atom in the post-flame region. The corresponding rate coefficients at 1 atm were evaluated by using TST and RRKM theory by solving the master equations in the temperature range of 500-2500 K. The calculated branching ratios suggest that the pathways involving CH2 are competitive in PAH growth.

Abstract:The synthesis of a class of contorted electron-deficient polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been achieved by a one-pot bay annulation of perylene diimide involving a mild Suzuki coupling and subsequent air-mediated, ambient-light-induced photocyclization. X-ray crystallography unambiguously confirmed the contorted PAH structure bearing four imide groups. Abstract:A synthetic strategy promising the establishment of a new star-shaped and linear polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) family with distinct molecular topologies has been developed. The Sonogashira reaction between the iodide derivatives 2a-e and phenylacetylene catalyzed with Pd(0) affords 3a-e in high yields. The Diels-Alder and decarbonylation reactions between 3a-e and tetraphe-nylcyclophentadiene following the oxidation by FeCl3 produce the star-shaped and linear PAHs 5a-e containing a five-membered ring. The structural analysis and the optical properties of all new compounds are performed by a combination of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectrometry. The electronic and photophysical properties are studied by orthogonal comparisons of the absorption and fluorescence spectra in THF solutions, which not only give insight into the interactions among aromatic submoieties in each molecule and the effects of meta-conjugation and para-conjugation on electronic delocalization, but also indicate effective conjugation length variations from oligophenylacetylenes 3a-e to oligophenylene dendrimers 4a-e and PAHs 5a-e. The star-shaped 5c exhibits the highest aggregation in excited states compared with the other four hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) derivatives.

Abstract:A highly efficient modular synthetic method for BN-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) composed of a borazaronaphthalene core along with multiple functionalized sites is reported. The halogenated 2,1-borazaronaphthalene cores are constructed through a ring-closing reaction between o-ethynylaniline derivatives and boron halides. The controllable halogen substituents make further derivatization of 2,1-borazaronaphthalene cores feasible by using metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. On the basis of the carefully designed precursors, various functional aromatic rings can be fused to the azaborine core via a one-pot nucleophilic tandem reaction, affording previously inaccessible PAHs in moderate yields.

Abstract:Nitrogen atom doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the so-called aza-PAHs, and their conjugated polymers are applicable as functional chromophores and organic semiconductors. Prosperous developments of PAHs and heterocyclic chemistry have been made possible by considerable improvements in synthetic methodologies, among which one-step reactions lead directly to an aza-conjugated ring are highly desirable. Bischler-Napieralski cyclization, an old yet efficient reaction, can accomplish this task. During the last ten years, this reaction has been successfully used to synthesize a great variety of aza-PAHs molecules. Further combination with polymer chemistry is able to provide the corresponding polymers. This feature article summarizes the up-to-data advances, mainly achieved by our groups, on the design and synthesis of new and well-tailored aza-PAHs and macromolecular architectures using Bischler-Napieralski cyclization as the key step. Furthermore, the versatile applications of these functional materials in the fields of chemosensors, optoelectronic devices, and biomolecular probes are also covered in detail.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:A C-H functionalizing annulation reaction of boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with alkynes is described. This metal-free π-extension provides a new synthetic route to fusion atom B-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that is demonstrated with the synthesis of a family of new, functionalized, structurally constrained 6a,15a-diborabenzo[tuv]naphtho[2,1-b]picenes. These annulation products exhibit deep LUMO energy levels, strong visible-range absorptions, and sterically accessible π-systems that can adopt herringbone or π-stacked solid-state structures based on choice of substituents. From regioselectivity and DFT calculations, we propose an annulation mechanism involving intramolecular electrophilic aromatic substitution of a zwitterionic intermediate.

The precursors of PAHs were obtained by using a direct arylation of arenes via a transient ligand-directed C–H functionalization strategy and the cycloaromatization was readily achieved by using a Brønsted acid catalyst. Abstract:Herein, we describe a strategy for the synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from readily available 2‐iodostyrenes and o‐halobenzoic acids through a ligand‐free palladium‐catalyzed cascade vinyl C‐H activation/decarboxylative cyclization. A vinyl‐coordinated five‐membered palladacycle was proposed as the key intermediate for this sequential process. Abstract:Non‐benzenoid PAHs with pentagon/heptagon pairs have unique electronic structures and promising opto‐electronic properties. A Pd‐catalyzed (3+2) alkyne annulation reaction of heptagons was developed to construct heptagon/pentagon pairs. The neutral dibenzoazulene derivative was further transformed to tropylium cation and tropyl radical, which showed bathochromic shifted absorption and switched aromaticity. Non‐benzenoid PAHs with pentagon/heptagon pairs have unique electronic structures and promising opto‐electronic properties. However, the construction of pentagon/heptagon pair units in these PAHs is challenging. Herein, we developed a Pd‐catalyzed (3+2) alkyne annulation reaction of heptagons, and constructed heptagon/pentagon pairs. The substrate scope is wide and the yield is good to moderate. A series of dibenzoauzlene derivatives were synthesized and their opto‐electronic properties were systematically studied by UV‐vis absorption and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the dibenzoazulene derivative was further transformed to tropylium cation and tropyl radical, which showed bathochromic shifted absorption and switched aromaticity.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) play a crucial role in soot inception, interstellar evolution, and nanomaterial synthesis. Although several mechanisms, such as hydrogen-abstraction acetylene/vinylacetylene addition, have previously been proposed, PAH formation and growth are not yet fully understood. We propose an alternate PAH growth mechanism wherein propargyl radical reacts with butadiyne to form larger radicals containing newly fused aromatic rings. Butadiyne is an important intermediate in hydrocarbon oxidation and carbon rich stars, while propargyl is one of the most important resonantly stabilized radicals that persists for long times. Our proposed mechanism is validated by quantum chemical calculations, elementary reaction experiments, laminar flame analysis, and kinetic modeling. Our findings challenge the conventional wisdom that radical site regeneration, being central to PAH growth, requires sequential hydrogen elimination and/or abstraction. In our proposed mechanism, PAH growth does not depend on abundant free radical consumption, and could, therefore, help explain carbonaceous nanoparticle coalescence in radical-deficient reaction environments.
Pinwheel-like Curved Aromatics from the Cyclotrimerization of Strained Alkyne Cycloparaphenylenes

Abstract:Curved aromatic hydrocarbons often display better solubility and more desirable electronic properties in comparison to their flat counterparts. Macrocyclic curved aromatics possess these traits as well as shape-persistent pores ideal for host-guest interactions. A quintessential macrocyclic curved aromatic molecule is the cycloparaphenylene, or [n]CPP. Our group has developed a new class of these carbon nanohoops, called [n+1]CPPs, that incorporate a strained alkyne (“+1”) into the carbon backbone. We have previously shown the [n+1]CPPs to be a promising new class of strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition click reagents. Herein, we show that the [n+1]CPPs can also be converted into pinwheel-like multi-pore large molecules via a straightforward and high yielding metal-mediated alkyne cyclotrimerization reaction. We provide insight into suitable metals for this transformation, the photophysics of these trimeric molecules, as well as their strain profiles and crystal packing.

Abstract:The study of cycloaddition mechanisms is central to the fabrication of extended sp2 carbon nanostructures. Reaction modeling in this context has focused mostly on putative, energetically preferred, exothermic products with limited consideration for symmetry allowed or forbidden mechanistic effects. Here, we introduce a scheme for classifying symmetry-forbidden reaction coordinates in Woodward-Hoffmann correlation diagrams. Topological classifiers grant access to the study of reaction pathways and correlation diagrams in the same footing, for the purpose of elucidating mechanisms and products of polycyclic aromatic azomethine ylide (PAMY) cycloadditions with pentacene-yielding polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with an isoindole core in the solid-state and on surfaces as characterized by mass spectrometry and scanning tunneling microscopy, respectively. By means of a tight-binding reaction model and density functional theory (DFT) we find topologically-allowed pathways if a product is endothermic, and topologically-forbidden if a product is exothermic. Our work unveils topological classification as a crucial element for reaction modeling for nanographene engineering, and highlights its fundamental role in the design of cycloadditions in on-surface and solid-state chemical reactions, while underscoring that exothermic pathways can be topologically-forbidden.

Abstract:We describe the results of our investigation on the preparation, structural characterization, and optical properties of a spiro-annulated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon prepared by the cyclodehydrogenation of a hexa{2-(9,9′-spirobifluorenyl)}benzene precursor molecule. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the anthracene backbone adopts one of the largest end-to-end twists thus far reported.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) structures with suitable electron-withdrawing groups are useful building blocks for developing optical and electron-transporting materials. Here, we report the application of a double benzannulation process to the syntheses of PAH diimides with enlarged π-frameworks featuring a central anthracene moiety. The preparations are realized by copper-catalyzed [4+2] cycloaddition of ethynyl-substituted aromatic dicarboximide to 2,5-bis(phenylethynyl)terephthalaldehyde, followed by intramolecular photocyclization or direct arylation via Heck cross coupling. A central symmetric benzo[1,2-k:4,5-k']-bis(fluoranthene)-3,4,12,13-tetracarboxyl diimide (BFDI) is acquired, with the single crystal structure revealing its completely planar polycyclic skeleton. Such a shape-persistent PAH expectedly exhibits a tendency to stack face-to-face and forms J-aggregates. Moreover, BFDI can be difunctionalized site-selectively at the reactive 9 and 10 positions of the anthracene unit and then applied to prepare conjugated polymers. When coupled with 1,4-diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]-pyrrole (DPP) via thiophene and dithiophene linkers, two polymers with significantly broadened absorption bands extended to the near-infrared regime are obtained, evidencing the effective π-conjugative extension ability of BFDI unit.
