Abstract:Cyclotrimerization of alkynes to aromatics represents a promising approach to two-dimensional conjugated networks due to its single-reactant and atom-economy attributes, in comparison with other multicomponent coupling reactions. However, the reaction mechanism of alkyne cyclotrimerization has not yet been well understood due to characterization challenges. In this work, we take a surface reaction approach to study fundamental polymerization mechanism by using a diyne monomer named 4,4'-diethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl as a test bed. We have succeeded in directly characterizing reactants, intermediates, and their reaction products with the aid of scanning tunneling microscope, which allows us to gain mechanistic insights into the reaction pathways. By combining with density functional theory calculation, our result has revealed for the first time that the polycyclotrimerization is a two-step [2+2+2] cyclization reaction. This work provides an in-depth understanding of polycyclotrimerization process at the atomic level, offering a new avenue to design and construct of single-atom-thick conjugated networks.

Abstract:A metal- and hypervalent iodine reagent-free electrochemical oxidative dearomatization-induced [5+2] cycloaddition/pinacol rearrangement cascade reaction was described. The electrosynthetic method showed strong tolerance for vinylphenols, ethynylphenols, and allenylphenols, which thus enabled the rapid assembly of diversely functionalized bicyclo[3.2.1]octanes in 41-95% yields and up to >20:1 dr. This protocol could be scaled up to gram amounts and should find wide application in complex natural product synthesis.

Abstract:A copper-catalyzed decarboxylative cascade cyclization of propargylic cyclic carbonates/carbamates with pyridinium 1,4-zwitterionic thiolates is developed. A range of fused polyheterocyclic compounds are obtained in moderate to good yields with excellent diastereoselectivities. Of particular note is that four new bonds (two C-C, one C-O/N, one C-S) and four new stereocenters could be efficiently embedded into the tetracyclic fused scaffolds in a single step.

Abstract:Reported herein are the bench stable (2E,4E)-diazohexa-2,4-dienals (diazodienals) and their unprecedented polycy-clization with aldimine and arylamines enabled by Rh(II)/Brønsted acid relay catalysis. This scalable and atom-economical reaction provides direct access to the biologically important azatricyclo[6.2.1.04,11]undecane fused polycycles having six contiguous stereocenters. Mechanistic studies revealed that polycyclization proceeds through an unusual triple-nucleophilic cascade initiated by aldimine attack on remote Rh-carbenoid, 6-electrocyclization of aza-trienyl azomethine ylide, stereoselective aza-Michael addition via iminium activation and inverse electron-demand intramolecular aza Diels-Alder reaction. The secondary interactions play a crucial role in the preorganization of reactive intermediates for the pericyclic reactions and hence the overall efficiency of the polycyclization.

Abstract:AbstractBy harnessing a highly efficient metal‐catalyzed tandem cycloaddition reaction as the key benzannulation step, a series of cyclopolyarene nanorings of varied sizes are obtained from poly(arylene‐butadiynylene) macrocyclic precursors, which can be synthesized relatively conveniently. Interestingly, due to the nonparallel bond connectivity of the repeat unit, unique Möbius topology is manifested by the cyclopolyarene nanorings composed of an odd number of repeat units, whereas cylindrical tubular structures with radial conjugation are formed with those consisting of an even number of repeat units.

Abstract:Synthesis of bicyclic scaffolds has gained significant attention in drug discovery due to their potential to mimic benzene bioisosteres. Here, we present a mild and scalable Sc(OTf)3-catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition of bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs) with ynamides, yielding a diverse array of polysubstituted 2-amino-bicyclo[2.1.1]hexenes in good to excellent yields. These products offer valuable starting materials for the construction of novel functionalized bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction involves a nucleophilic addition of ynamides to bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes, followed by an intramolecular cyclization of in situ generated enolate and keteniminium ion. We expect that these findings will encourage utilization of complex bioisosteres and foster further investigation into BCB-based cycloaddition chemistry.

Abstract:Cyclic polymers exhibit unique properties in comparison with their linear analogs. However, it remains challenging to develop highly efficient and controllable strategy for synthesis of cyclic polymers. Recently, Prof. Zhang group from the State Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials at Jilin University, designs and synthesizes an intramolecularly, covalently tethered B-P-B trifunctional frustrated Lewis pair catalyst/initiator, composed of two acidic B sites and one basic P sites. Through both the intramolecularly-and intermolecularly synergistic effect, such B-P-B system exhibits '' one plus one is greater than two '' effect, thus successfully polymerizing. gamma-methyl- alpha-methylene-gamma -butyrolactone (MMBL) into an authentic cyclic polymer c-PMMBL composed entirely of acrylate monomer units. Compared with traditional strategies, this method exhibits good generality and can be employed for rapid synthesis of cyclic polymers, suggesting its potential application in the scalable synthesis of cyclic polymers in the future.

Abstract:Cascade radical cyclization constitutes an atom- and step-economic route for rapid assembly of polycyclic molecular skeletons. Although an array of redox-active metal catalysts has recently shown robust applications in enabling various catalytic cascade radical processes, the use of free organic radical as the catalyst, which is capable of triggering strategically distinct cascades, has rarely been developed. Here, we disclosed that the benzimidazolium-based N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-boryl radical is capable of catalyzing cascade cyclization reactions in both intra- and intermolecular pathways, assembling [5,5] fused bicyclic and [6,6,6] fused tricyclic molecules, respectively. The catalytic reactions start with the chemo- and regioselective addition of the boryl radical catalyst to a tethered alkene or alkyne moiety, followed by either an intramolecular formal [3+2] or an intermolecular [2+2+2] cycloaddition process to construct bicyclo[3.3.0]octane or tetrahydrophenanthridine skeletons, respectively. Eventually, a β-elimination occurs to release the boryl radical catalyst, completing a catalytic cycle. High to excellent diastereoselectivity is achieved in both catalytic reactions under substrate control.

Abstract:Cyclic polymers have been extensively studied because of their unique topology and physical properties, while the methods for efficient synthesis of well-defined bicyclic and multicyclic polymers are limited. Herein, an effective strategy was developed to synthesize ultralarge-sized bicyclic polymers by a ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP)-based blocking-cyclization technique in a simplified feeding procedure, using the short ladderphane bearing four living ends as the initial motif. The molecular topology of the bicyclic polymer was clarified by pieces of evidence and validated by theoretical simulation. Importantly, the visualized eight-shaped molecular topology was observed. Meanwhile, the bicyclic polymer exhibited stronger thermal, fluorescence emission, and mechanical properties and better dielectric and energy storage performance than its four-arm counterpart, which elucidated the difference in molecular topology between bicyclic and four-arm polymers. Moreover, a tetracyclic polymer with a large ring size could be readily obtained. Therefore, this designed strategy opens new horizons for building bicyclic and multicyclic polymers using the conventional ROMP and commercial Grubbs catalyst.

Abstract:Abstract Cyclic polymers have a number of unique physical properties compared with those of their linear counterparts. However, the methods for the synthesis of cyclic polymers are very limited, and some multicyclic polymers are still not accessible now. Here, we found that the five˗membered cyclic structure and electron withdrawing groups make methylene in rhodanine highly active to aldehyde via highly efficient Knoevenagel reaction. Also, rhodanine can act as an initiator for anionic ring-opening polymerization of thiirane to produce cyclic polythioethers. Therefore, rhodanine can serve as both an initiator for ring-opening polymerization and a monomer in Knoevenagel polymerization. Via rhodanine-based Knoevenagel reaction, we can easily incorporate rhodanine moieties in the backbone, side chain, branched chain, etc, and correspondingly could produce cyclic structures in the backbone, side chain, branched chain, etc, via rhodanine˗based anionic ring-opening polymerization. This rhodanine chemistry would provide easy access to a wide variety of complex multicyclic polymers.

Abstract:pi-Conjugated macrocycles have been highly attractive due to their challenging synthesis, fascinating aesthetic structure and unique physical and chemical properties. Although some progress has been made in synthesis, the study of pi-macrocycles with different structural characteristics and supramolecular interactions still faces major challenges. In this paper, two new single-bond linked macrocycles (MS-4T/MS-6T) were reported, and the corresponding vinyl-bridged heterocycloarenes (MF-4T/MF-6T) were synthesized by the periphery fusion strategy. Further studies have indicated that the structure of these four macrocycles is determined by both size and curvature, showing unique variations from nearly planar to bowl and then to saddle. Interestingly, the nearly planar MS-4T with a small size and the rigid saddle-shaped MF-6T show no obvious response to fullerenes C-60 or C-70, while the bowl-shaped MS-6T and MF-4T demonstrate a strong binding affinity towards fullerenes C-60 and C-70. What's more, two kinds of co-crystals with capsule-like configurations, MS-6T@C-60 and MS-6T@C-70, have been successfully obtained, among which the former shows a loose columnar arrangement while the latter displays a unique three-dimensional honeycomb arrangement that is extremely rare in supramolecular complexes. This work systematically studies the pi-conjugated macrocycles and provides a new idea for the development of novel host-guest systems and further multifunctional applications.
