Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:The first umpolung strategy for the cycloacylation of fullerene using a N-heterocyclic carbene organocatalyst is reported. The coupling of [60]fullerene with different structural α,β-unsaturated aldehydes efficiently furnishes interesting [60]fullerene-fused cyclopentan-1-ones or cyclohex-2-en-1-ones in good to excellent yields. This new reaction displays a wide substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance, and diverse substituents such as aryl, heteroaryl, alkenyl, alkyl, and ester can be installed by using the corresponding enals.

Abstract:[reaction: see text] tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to [70]fullerene to form a mixture of adducts C(70)(OO(t)()Bu)(n)() (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10). Four isomers were isolated for the bis-adduct with the two tert-butylperoxo groups attached at 1,2-, 5,6-, 7,23-, and 2,5-positions, respectively. Two isomers were isolated for the tetrakis-adduct with the tert-butylperoxo groups located along the equator in C(s)() symmetry and on the side in C(1) symmetry, respectively. Similarly, two isomers were isolated for the hexakis-adducts with a structure related to the tetrakis-adducts, one of which has the cyclopentadienyl substructure. No isomer was detected for the octakis- and decakis-adducts. The C(s)()-symmetric octakis- and C(2)-symmetric decakis-adducts have all the tert-butylperoxo groups located along the equator. The decakis-adduct is the major product under optimized conditions. The compounds were characterized by their spectroscopic data. Chemical correlation through further addition of tert-butylperoxy radicals to isolated pure derivatives confirmed the structure assignment. Mechanisms of the tert-butylperoxy radical addition to C(70) follow two pathways: equatorial addition along the belt and cyclopentadienyl addition on the side.

Abstract:A novel FeCl2·4H2O-mediated internal-oxidant relay cascade reaction has been developed by functionalization of O-substituted benzohydroxamic acids or N-chloro-arylamides with [60]fullerene. Depending on the nature of the N-substituted groups, fullerenooxazoles or rare hydroxyfullerenyl amides could be obtained in a straightforward and flexible manner. Such a new transformation provides a unique strategy for the synthesis of fullerenooxazoles or hydroxyfullerenyl amides.

Abstract:Unlike the facile addition of aliphatic amines to fullerenes, heteroaromatic compounds with NH group do not react directly with pristine fullerenes. The present work reports the preparation of several cyclopentadienyl type [60]fullerene derivatives with pyrazole and pyrrole addends through replacement reactions of C60Cl6 in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide. The method has also been applied for the synthesis of aniline and methoxyamine [60]fullerene cyclopentadienyl type adducts. Radical species were involved in the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:The unique reactivity and synthetic applications of oxime acetate derivatives with N, O and S substituents at the α‐position are disclosed for the first time, which leads to 2‐substituted fulleropyrrolidines and mono‐ and disubstituted 1‐fulleropyrrolines via copper‐catalyzed redox‐neutral N‐heteroannulation reactions with C60. This transformation is operationally simple and has a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Theoretical calculations at the level of B3LYP/6‐31G(d) were performed to elucidate the chemoselectivity of the reaction.

Abstract:A series of isomerically pure alkynyl-substituted fullerenol derivatives such as C-60(OH)(6)(O(CH2)(3)CCH)(2) were synthesized through Lewis acid catalyzed epoxy ring opening and/or S(N)1 replacement reactions starting from the fullerene-mixed peroxide C-60(O)(t-BuOO)(4). Copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition readily converted the terminal alkynyl groups into triazole groups. Intramolecular oxidative alkyne coupling afforded a fullerenyl crown ether derivative.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene mixed peroxide C(60) (OH)(Cl)(OOtBu) reacts with PhMe(2)SiH/B(C(6)F(5))(3) to give oxahomofullerene. Mechanistic investigation indicates that the hydroxyl group in the central pentagon ring is essential to convert the tert-butylperoxo group into a ketal moiety. Migration of the silyl group and transformation of the siloxy group into a phenyl group are observed in the deprotection of the fullerene bound siloxy group. A 12-membered open-cage fullerendione was obtained through oxidation of a [6,6]-fullerendiol. This orifice could be closed to form ketal/hemiketal moieties by BF(3)-catalyzed reaction with methanol. All of the new fullerene derivatives were characterized by spectroscopic data, and structure of the open-cage fullerendione was also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract:tert-Butylperoxy radicals add to C(60) selectively to form multi-adducts C(60)(O)(m)(OO(t)Bu)(n) (m = 0, n = 2, 4, 6; m = 1, n = 0, 2, 4, 6) in moderate yields under various conditions. Visible light irradiation favors epoxide formation. High concentration of tert-butylperoxy radicals mainly produces the hexa-homoadduct C(60)(OO(t)Bu)(6) 6; low concentration and long reaction time favor the epoxy-containing C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(4) 7. The reaction can be stopped at the bis-adducts with limited TBHP. A stepwise addition mechanism is discussed involving mono-, allyl-, and cyclopentadienyl C(60) radical intermediates. m-CPBA reacts with the 1,4-bis-adduct to form C(60)(O)(OO(t)Bu)(2) and C(60)(O)(3)(OO(t)Bu)(2). The C-O bond of the epoxy ring in 7 can be cleaved with HNO(3) and CF(3)COOH. Nucleophilic addition of NaOMe to 7 follows the S(N)1 and extended S(N)2' mechanism, from which four products are isolated with the general formula C(60)(O)(a)(OH)(b)(OMe)(c)(OO(t)Bu)(d). Visible light irradiation of the hexa-adduct 6 results in partial cleavage of both the C-O and O-O bonds of peroxide moieties and formation of the cage-opened compound C(60)(O)(O)(2)(OO(t)Bu)(4). All the fullerene derivatives are characterized by spectroscopic data. A single-crystal structure has been obtained for an isomer of C(60)(O)(OH)(2)(OMe)(4)(OO(t)Bu)(2).

Abstract:Peroxy radicals such as (BuOO)-O-t add to fullerenes efficiently to form isomerically pure multiadducts, for example, C-60(OOBut)(6). The fullerene- mixed peroxides exhibit rich chemical reactivity. Further transformation of the peroxy groups has resulted in fullereneols, open-cage fullerenes, aza- and oxafullerenes and/or fulleroids. Practical applications such as photoinitiator remain to be explored for these fullerene-mixed peroxides.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Regioselective electrochemical hydroalkylations of [60]fullerene‐fused furochromenone with alky halides under different acidic conditions unexpectedly afford three types of tetra‐functionalized [60]fullerene derivatives in high yields. When acetic acid is used as the proton source, two 1,2,3,4‐adducts with retained or rearranged five‐membered heterocycle are obtained as major and minor products, respectively. While trifluoroacetic acid is employed as the proton source, 1,2,3,16‐adducts and 1,2,3,4‐adducts, both with the five‐membered heterocycle rearranged from [6,6]‐junction to [5,6]‐junction, are generated. Intriguingly, the obtained 1,2,3,16‐adducts can be transformed into 1,2,3,4‐adducts accompanied by rearrangement of the fused five‐membered heterocycle from [5,6]‐junction to [6,6]‐junction. These products have been characterized by spectroscopic data and single‐crystal X‐ray analysis. Moreover, the two 1,2,3,4‐adducts with the heterocycle fused to [5,6]‐junction or [6,6]‐junction show diagnostic UV‐vis spectra, which may be useful for the identification of these two types of 1,2,3,4‐adducts in the future. A plausible reaction mechanism has been proposed to elucidate the formation of hydroalkylation products in the presence of different acids. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Most of the known open-cage fullerene derivatives contain carbonyl and other relatively inert groups on the rim of the orifice. It is difficult to rationally design further reactions and attach other functional groups on to these open-cage derivatives. In the present work, two molecules of difunctional 1,4-benzenediamine have been incorporated into the rim of an open-cage C-60 derivative through one amino group leaving the other amino group free for further functionalization. The difunctional 4-aminophenol reacted analogously to form an open-cage derivative with a free OH group each on the two phenyl rings. The amino and hydroxyl groups on the phenyl ring above the rim of the orifice showed similar reactivity as aniline and phenol. One of the carbonyl groups on the rim of the orifice could be selectively reduced by NaBH4 and P(OEt)(3). The reduction reactions were reversible and the reduced products could be readily converted back to the carbonyl precursor. Thus, this redox process acts as a tool to fine tune the size of the orifice for host-guest studies.
