Abstract:Phase estimation is of great significance for the azimuth estimation using hydrophone arrays. For high-frequency signal sources, it is often challenging to estimate the phase differences between the received signals of the array elements when the element spacing is much larger than the signal wavelength. A phase unwrapping algorithm based on periodicity extension is proposed here, which leverages the periodic nature of the wrapped phase to obtain accurate phase information while avoiding error accumulation. By directly retrieving the phase matrix and applying quality judgment and predictive correction, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated via restoring ambiguity integers. Experimental results validate the performance of the algorithm.

Abstract:A novel frequency-shifting method for phase retrieval from fringe patterns is proposed. It needs two fringe patterns. In the second fringe pattern, a low frequency carrier is introduced. The low carrier frequency is used to open only fringe patches near critical points rather than the whole fringe pattern. The windowed Fourier ridges algorithm is used to retrieve the phase, which is able to characterize the density of the fringe patterns so that critical points can be recognized. The method is verified by a simulation example.

Abstract:Phase detection is one of the most important processing steps in optical phase-shifting interferometry. It aims to reconstruct the phase field of wavefront from the interferogram. To solve this problem, many algorithms of phase detection have been proposed these years. Here, A FFT-based two-step phase shifting (TPS) algorithm is described in detail and implemented by use of experimental interferograms. This algorithm has been proposed to solve the TPS problem with random phase shift except π. By comparison with the Visibility-Function-based TPS algorithm, it proves that the FFT-based algorithm has obvious advantages in phase extracting. Meanwhile, we present a π-phase-shift supplement to the TPS algorithm, which combines the two interferograms and demodulates the phase map from a combined interferogram. So combining this quasi-two-step method and FFT-based one, one could really implement the TPS with random phase shift. Thereafter, we design an optical setup of two-channel TPS interferometer with random phase shift, which could capture the two interferograms simultaneously. At the same time, we propose a fringe-variable Jamin interferometer to detect reversed domain of ferroelectric crystal in real time. It could realize the two-step phase shifting with π radian.
Optimized Phase Retrieval Method Based on Multi-Focus Property of Zone Plate

Abstract:As a computational imaging method, phase retrieval has wide applications in image reconstruction, wavefront detection, image encryption, etc. It is an image-based wavefront sensing technique and compared with some other traditional measurement methods such as interferometry, phase retrieval has the advantages of easy operation, high accuracy and strong adaptability to the environment. Conventional phase retrieval algorithms, such as the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, retrieve wavefront by iterative calculation. But limited by finite information of the captured diffractive light filed, the calculation process is easy to fall into local minimum value and stagnation occurs in practical, making it unable to converge to the right wavefront. In this paper, in order to improve this phenomenon, a phase retrieval method combined with the zone plate is proposed in this paper. In this method, zone plates are added into the traditional iterative phase retrieval algorithm to modulate the incident wavefront and combined with the multi-focus property, it can collect more effective information about the wavefront in a single optical intensity distribution image and realize a better wavefront reconstruction result. Simulation results indicate that by taking zone plates into calculation, more effective reconstruction results can be acquired. On the one hand, the recovery residual is smaller compared with conventional lens. On the other, although all of these methods reach to a stagnation, zone-plate-based methods are more efficient to get a better result.

Abstract:An FFT-based two-step phase-shifting (TPS) algorithm is described in detail and implemented by use of experimental interferograms. This algorithm has been proposed to solve the TPS problem with random phase shift except π. By comparison with the visibility-function-based TPS algorithm, it proves that the FFT-based algorithm has obvious advantages in phase extracting. Meanwhile, we present a π-phase-shift supplement to the TPS algorithm, which combines the two interferograms and demodulates the phase map by locating the extrema of the combined fringes after removing the respective backgrounds. So combining this method and FFT-based one, one could really implement the TPS with random phase shift. Whereafter, we systematically compare the TPS with single-interferogram analysis algorithm and conventional three-step phase-shifting one. The results demonstrate that the FFT-based TPS algorithm has a satisfactory accuracy. At last, based on the polarizing interferometry, a schematic setup of two-channel TPS interferometer with random phase shift is suggested to implement the simultaneous collection of interferograms.
Pre-shifted Phase Coding Approach for Absolute Phase Retrieval

Abstract:The phase coding approach has been extensively applied to three-dimensional (3-D) shape measurement, in which the fringe order determined by the phase coding patterns is utilized to unfold the wrapped phase calculated by the phase-shifted patterns. However, due to inevitable random noises and projector/camera defocus, the fringe order can not be accurately aligned with the wrapped phase, thereby introducing the abnormal jump phase errors. To this end, this paper presents a simple and practical approach with no accuracy loss and no extra patterns to remove the abnormal jump phase errors. Firstly, the designed phase coding patterns are pre-shifted by half fringe period relative to the phase-shifted sinusoidal patterns for ensuring that the decoding order changes and the 2π phase jumps of the wrapped phase are staggered. Then, by analyzing the intensity variations of the phase-shifted sinusoidal patterns, a virtual binary code is generated, which is essentially shifted by a quarter of the fringe period relative to the phase-shifted sinusoidal patterns. Subsequently, the decoding order is divided into three subregions by referring to the distribution of the virtual binary code and the wrapped phase. After completing the segmentation, a regional correction operation (RCO) is implemented. For each subregion, the decoding order remains unchanged or is adjusted to get the correct fringe order. As a result, the interval of the wrapped phase can be accurately identified at the pixel level for phase unwrapping successfully. Benefitting from the simple pre-shifted strategy used for the phase coding patterns and the virtual binary code extracted by the phase-shifted patterns, the proposed approach can completely avoid the abnormal jump phase errors without projecting additional patterns. Moreover, compared with the conventional median filtering approach, the proposed approach has the capability to preserve sharp edges, and thus it is noninvasive. The measurement results demonstrate the reliability and accuracy of the proposed approach in measuring different objects containing intricate surface profiles.

Abstract:Phase unwrapping is the core of phase shift profilometry. Conventional phase unwrapping usually requires the projection of additional patterns or other constrains to unwrap the high-frequency wrapped phase into absolute phase, which increases time consumption and complicates measurement procedures. To solve this problem, we propose a self-coding phase shift (SCPS) method for retrieving the absolute phase. Two sets of codes are encoded into the projection patterns, namely, the De-Bruijn sequence code and the phase gradient code. The fringe order can then be determined by combining these two different encodings. The proposed method does not require any prior information and only demands four phase shift fringes. Experimental results demonstrate that the SCPS method is highly robust and accurate in measuring both complex and separated objects.

Absolute Phase Retrieval Via Color Phase-Coding

Abstract:Phase-coding method that embeds codewords into phase rather than intensity performs well for absolute phase retrieval. However, this method becomes instable when dealing with a large number of codewords. This paper designs three color phase-coding fringes to determine the fringe order pixel by pixel. Specifically, six groups of N-stairs are encoded into three coding fringes, and each group is endowed with a different color to eliminate ambiguity between groups. Such that three additional fringes can generate more than 6N codewords by combining the color and phase information. Experiment results confirmed the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Codeword-assisted temporal phase unwrapping (TPU) is extensively applied in absolute phase retrieval, in which the fringe order embedded in the temporal sequence identifies the interval of the wrapped phase. However, owing to inevitable image blurring and random noise, the fringe order cannot be aligned with the interval of the wrapped phase at the pixel level and tends to fail easily under high-frequency measurements, thereby yielding abnormal jump errors (JEs). The existing approaches suffer from the limitations of universality, efficiency, and fringe frequency. To this end, this work proposes a universal self-correcting approach to remove abnormal JEs efficiently and accurately. Specifically, the virtual fringe order is introduced by analyzing the intensity changes in the phase-shifted patterns, and then it is combined with the real fringe order to form a complementary fringe order pair. In addition, to enhance the anti-interference ability of the virtual fringe order, the fringe order histogram check technique (FOHCT) is proposed to eliminate fringe order errors. The proposed approach can efficiently conduct various codeword-assisted absolute phase retrieval without introducing additional patterns. Furthermore, benefitting from no error accumulation, our approach is applicable for high-frequency measurements, thereby improving the measurement capability. The measurement results validated the universality and efficiency of the proposed approach. High-frequency measurements demonstrated that the proposed approach outperformed the median filtering and the phase coding approach in terms of error rate (0.009% versus 3.13% versus 1.76%).

Abstract:The phase-coding method for absolute phase measurement possesses a strong robustness because its codewords are encoded into phase domain rather than intensity. However, a misalignment problem arises between fringe order and wrapped phase in this method owing to random noises and image blurring, especially in the high-frequency fringes situation. Therefore, the measurement result is unavailable. To overcome this problem, an optimized phase-coding algorithm is proposed in the study. We use the sinusoidal patterns to generate two opposite binary masks, which can locate half of each codeword. Then, the K-means algorithm is used to correct the codewords errors. The accurate fringe order is obtained by merging two halves of codewords and the absolute phase is recovered afterward. The used method is experimentally verified by an established measurement system, and the results show the proposed method is robustness and efficiency.

Abstract:The phase-to-coordinate conversion is an important step for accurate 3-D shape measurement by use of structured light methods. We propose to use an absolute phase map in the Fourier transform method to achieve better accuracy in the phase-to-coordinate conversion. A cross-shaped marker is embedded in the fringe pattern that is projected onto the object. The position of the marker in the captured fringe image is detected and utilized to calculate the absolute phase map. For phase analysis of the fringe image, the marker is removed and the sinusoidal intensity distribution of the fringe pattern is restored before the forward and inverse Fourier transforms are applied. Abstract:Phase retrieval is to recover the object amplitude and phase from the diffraction patterns. Here, an algebraic method is presented to solve the phase retrieval problems of arbitrary 2D complex-valued objects, without the requirements of numerous iterations, object prior knowledge, and precise experimental setups. The key step is to extract the far-field phase from the diffraction patterns. It is demonstrated by rigorous theoretical derivation that three window-shaped modulations are sufficient to establish a system of linear equations related to the far-field phase, from which the far-field phase is solved approximately with only algebraic calculations. Then, an efficient iteration scheme is designed to optimize the direct approximate solution. After a few iterations, the direct solution is improved quickly and very close to the exact solution. With the advantages of high speed and high accuracy to general phase retrieval problems, the proposed algebraic method may be helpful to the Fourier imaging systems in which interferometric techniques are not applicable.

Abstract:Digital fringe projection profilometry based on phase-shifting technology is a reliable method for complex shape measurement, and the phase is one of the most important factors affecting measurement accuracy. The calculation of the absolute phase depends on the calculation of the wrapped phase and encoding technology. In this paper, a technique of obtaining the absolute phase of multi-frequency heterodyne fringe images using the Hilbert transform is presented. Since the wrapped phase can be calculated from only one fringe image of each frequency, the method does not need phase-shifting. The absolute phase can be obtained from the wrapped phase by applying the heterodyne method. The measurement time and computational complexity are dramatically reduced, the measurement efficiency is greatly improved, and this benefit from the number of images is greatly reduced. The experimental results show that the method presented in this paper performs well in the application, and the accuracy is no different from that of the phase-shifting method while the efficiency is greatly improved.

Abstract:Fiber-optic time and frequency synchronization technology demonstrates ultra-high synchronization performance and has been gradually applied in various fields. Based on frequency synchronization, this study addressed the problems of period ambiguity and initial phase uncertainty of the phase signal to realize the coherent transmission of the phase. An absolute phase marking technology was developed based on high-speed digital logic with zero-crossing detection and an optimized control strategy. It can realize picosecond-level absolute phase marking and provide a picosecond-level ultra-low peak-to-peak jitter pulse marking signal to eliminate phase period ambiguity and determine initial phase and transmission delay. Thus, by combining the high-precision phase measurement capability of the synchronized frequency signal and long-distance ambiguity elimination capability of the pulse-per-second signal, a high-precision remote coherent phase transmission over an optical fiber is realized. After frequency synchronization, the peak-to-peak jitter between the local and remote phase-marking signals can be only 3.3 ps within 10,000 s measurement time. The uncertainty of the coherent phase transmission is 2.577 ps. This technology can significantly improve the phase coherence of fiber-optic time and frequency transmission and provide a new approach to achieve peak-to-peak picosecond-level reference phase marking and high-precision fiber-optic remote coherent phase transmission. This demonstrates broad application prospects in coherence fields such as radar networking.
Single-shot Spatial Frequency Multiplex Fringe Pattern for Phase Unwrapping Using Deep Learning

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has been widely applied in three-dimensional (3D) measurement owing to its high measurement accuracy and simple structure. In FPP, how to effectively recover the absolute phase, especially through a single image, has always been a huge challenge and eternal pursuit. The frequency-multiplex methods can maximize the efficiency of phase unwrapping by mixing the multi-frequency information used to eliminate phase ambiguity in the spectrum. However, spectrum aliasing and the resulting phase unwrapping errors are still pressing difficulties. Inspired by the successful application of deep learning in FPP, we propose a single-shot frequency multiplex fringe pattern for phase unwrapping approach using deep learning. Through extensive data learning, the properly trained neural networks can directly learn to obtain spectrum-aliasing-free phase information and robust phase unwrapping from single-frame compound input. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with convenient frequency-multiplex methods, our deep-learning-based approach can achieve more accurate and stable absolute phase retrieval.
A precise three-step phase retrieval algorithm suitable for the interferograms with less than one fringes numbers

Abstract:In order to improve the accuracy and expand the range of the phase-shifting algorithm application, a precise three-step phase retrieval algorithm suitable for the interferograms with less than one fringes numbers is proposed. The proposed method improves the accuracy, on the one hand because normalization and subtraction are introduced to reduce background intensity fluctuation, on the other hand because Lissajous ellipse fitting (LEF) method is introduced to reconstruct phase maps from the normalized and Gram-Schmidt (GS) orthonormalized maps. Because the approximation operations for cumulative sum aren't used in the GS method, the proposed algorithm is suitable for not only interferograms that the fringes numbers are more than one but also interferograms that fringes numbers are less than one. Moreover, the proposed method can be applied to simple and complex patterns. Thus, the proposed algorithm has a wider range of applications. The proposed algorithm's reliability and performance are confirmed by simulations and experiments.

Abstract:A phase unwrapping algorithm specially designed for the phase-shifting fringe projection profilometry (FPP) is proposed. It combines a revised dual-frequency fringe projectionalgorithm and a proposed fringe background based quality guided phase unwrapping algorithm (FB-QGPUA). Phase demodulated from the high-frequency fringe patterns is partially unwrapped by that demodulated from the low-frequency ones. Then FB-QGPUA is adopted to further unwrap the partially unwrapped phase. Influences of the phase error on the measurement are researched. Strategy to select the fringe pitch is given. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is very robust and efficient.

Abstract:An improved iterative phase retrieval algorithm is put forward, which makes use of intensity information in several planes, and divides the retrieval process into two steps: profile retrieval and detail retrieval. First the input plane and other three far diffraction planes are needed to retrieve the profile of phase distribution, then the phase detail is available in a similar way. The phase distribution of any one dimensional optical field, including very complicated ones, can be successfully retrieved with this algorithm, and the accuracy of retrieval is greatly enhanced. This algorithm is also very robust. It has convergence independent on the initial phase, and high stability towards additive noise, which are both confirmed by simulations.

Abstract:Absolute phase retrieval is important for three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement in fringe projection technique. Numerous phase unwrapping methods have been proposed for addressing this issue, and gray-level is one such technique employed to determine fringe orders for wrapped phase. However, the code-word detection can fail due to random noise or cameras/projectors defocus. We propose an improved method to determine the code-words in this paper. Specifically, three sinusoidal fringe patterns are used to obtain the wrapped phase and three n-ary gray-level (nGL) patterns are employed to obtain the fringe order. Two opposite masks can be calculated through wrapped phase binarization. The masks and the nGL patterns are roughly used to obtain code-words. After half-period correction, the codeword is accurately reconstructed, and the fringe order is also determined. Simulations and experiments demonstrated the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to measure isolated objects with complex surfaces.
