Abstract:The first borogermanate halides, Ba7(BO3)3GeO4X (X = Cl, Br), have been synthesized using a high temperature solution method. Ba7(BO3)3GeO4X (X = Cl, Br) are isostructural and crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbam (no. 55). They feature a Ba-based 3D framework, while isolated GeO4 tetrahedra and BO3 triangles fill in the space created by the framework. Significantly, Ba7(BO3)3GeO4X (X = Cl, Br) possess a similar formula to the borosilicate halides, Ba7(BO3)3SiO4X (X = Cl, Br), but they are not isostructural. An interpretation for the structural transformation between them is demonstrated here, considering rigid GeO4 tetrahedra and flexible XBa6 (X = Cl, Br) octahedra. IR spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and first-principles calculations have been carried out on the title compounds.

Structure and stability of Ba-Cu-Ge type-I clathrates

Abstract:We have prepared samples of nominal type Ba(8)Cu(x)Ge(46-x) by induction melting and solid state reaction. Analysis shows that these materials form type-I clathrates, with copper content between x = 4.9 and 5.3, nearly independent of the starting composition. We used x-ray powder diffraction and single-crystal electron diffraction to confirm the cubic type-I clathrate structure, while electron microprobe measurements confirmed the stability of the x = 5 composition. This result differs from the corresponding Ag and Au clathrates, and was not known previously due perhaps to the similar Cu and Ge form factors in x-ray diffraction. The observed composition adheres very tightly to a valence-counting scheme, in agreement with a Zintl-type stability mechanism. This implies a gap in the electronic density of states, also in contrast to the metallic behavior of the Au and Ag analogs. Magnetization measurements showed a large diamagnetic response in the Ba-Cu-Ge clathrate. This behavior is consistent with semiconducting or semimetallic behavior, and is similar to that of a number of intermetallic semiconductors.

Mechanism of the Chain-Ring Transformation in BaGeO3

Abstract:The structural transformation from the [GeO2 & Oslash;(2-)(2)](n) (& Oslash; = bridging oxygen) chain to the [Ge3O9](6-) ring is technologically and geologically important; however, a clear understanding of this transformation is lacking. By using in situ high-temperature Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) computation, we investigated the phase transition of BaGeO3 and the mechanism of the structural transformation from the [GeO2 & Oslash;(2-)(2)](n) chain to the [Ge3O9](6-) ring. The Raman experimental results reveal that BaGeO3 undergoes the alpha-to-beta phase transition at around 1373 K. The 480 cm(-1) (computational value, corresponding to the experimental value of 440 cm(-1)) band of beta-BaGeO3 has a significantly larger width. By studying its structural origin, we propose a mechanism to account for the chain-ring transformation. At the phase transition temperature, the bridging oxygen atom of the chain attacks the opposite Ge atom in the neighboring GeO2 & Oslash;(2-)(2) motif and substitutes another bridging oxygen atom bonded to the Ge atom. With the formation of new Ge-& Oslash; bonds and the breakage of old Ge-& Oslash; bonds, the [GeO2 & Oslash;(2-)(2)](n) chain transforms into the [Ge3O9](6-) ring. The results of transition state searching also support the mechanism and provide more structural details about the chain-ring transformation.

Abstract:Utilizing first-principles and particle swarm optimization methods, we performed a systematic investigation of crystal structural stability and electrical properties of $A\mathrm{Ge}{X}_{3}$ compounds $(A=\mathrm{Li},\mathrm{Na},\mathrm{K},\mathrm{Rb},\mathrm{Cs};X=\mathrm{F},\mathrm{Cl},\mathrm{Br},\mathrm{I})$. Our work not only found the perovskite phases, but also discovered the post-perovskite, post-post-perovskite, and octahedra face-sharing structure phases, which are usually stable under high pressure, large strain, or exist in the inorganic--organic compound. These diverse structural phases provide abundant and promising properties. One striking phase is the $P{2}_{1}{2}_{1}{2}_{1}$ perovskite in ${\mathrm{KGeCl}}_{3}$ and ${\mathrm{KGeBr}}_{3}$, which possesses intrinsic small polar vortices and antivortices that may lead to a gyrotropic phase transition. The ferroelectric phase of $R3c$ $(\mathrm{LiGe}{X}_{3}, \mathrm{NaGe}{X}_{3})$, $R3m$ $(\mathrm{CsGe}{X}_{3})$ and $Pna{2}_{1}$ $(\mathrm{KGe}{X}_{3}, \mathrm{RbGe}{X}_{3})$ were also found. The new $Pna{2}_{1}$ phase possesses both proper and hybrid improper polarization, and the latter is evidenced by two original energetic couplings: one coupling polarization with the antipolar distortion from Ge atoms and antipolar distortion from $A$-site atoms, and another coupling polarization with out-of-phase halide octahedral tilting, in-phase halide octahedral tilting, and antipolar distortion from Ge atoms. The diverse structural phases and electrical properties make Ge-based halide a promising ${ABX}_{3}$ structure family in ferroics and piezoelectrics.

Abstract:Single crystals of a new germanium clathrate, Ba24Ge100, were synthesized by the Czochralsky pulling method using a tetra-arc furnace under an Ar atmosphere. The crystal structure was studied by X-ray single-crystal analysis. The clathrate crystallized in the cubic space group P4132 with a=14.5635(7) Å, V=3088.9(2) Å3. The final refinement using 903 unique reflections converged at R=0.032 and Rw=0.036. In the structure, germanium atoms are linked by sp3σ-bonds to form a three-dimensional network, in which barium atoms are enclosed. There are three sites for the barium atoms having different coordination environments. One site is in a Ge20 dodecahedron and the others are coordinated with 20 Ge atoms and 8 Ge atoms, respectively.

Abstract:Type-I clathrates of K7.69(2)Cu2.94(6)Ge43.06(6) and Rb8Ag2.79(4)Ge43.21(4) are synthesized directly from the corresponding elements. The structures are resolved by powder XRD data by means of a least-squares technique using WinCSD program. The refined lattice parameters are a = 10.70783(3) = angstrom and a = 10.84493(3) angstrom for K7.69(2)Cu2.94(6)Ge43.06(6) and Rb8Ag2.79(4)Ge43.21(4), respectively. The electronic band structure and density of states indicate K8Cu3Ge43 and Rb8Ag3Ge43 are p-type semiconductors with narrow indirect band gaps of 0.33 and 0.24 eV. In addition, K7.69(2)Cu2.94(6)Ge43.06(6) displays a diamagnetism with chi = -1.102(1) x 10(-3) emu mol(-1) in the field of 7 T at 400 K and has a strong Einstein model with theta(E) = 56.3(1) K and theta(D) = 297(3) K.

Abstract:New Tl type-I clathrates of K7.62(1)Tl0.38(1)Ge45.34(3) and Rb7.50(1)Tl0.50(1)Ge46 were synthesized via solid-state reaction. Rb7.50(1)Tl0.50(1)Ge46 and K7.62(1)Tl0.38(1)Ge45.34(3) were found to crystallize in space groups Pmn and Iad with lattice parameters of a = 10.81559(7) A and a = 21.4290(2) A, respectively. Theoretical calculations indicated metallic features based on the calculation models of Rb7Tl1Ge46 and K7Tl1Ge46 in the space group of Pm. The densities of states at the Fermi level were predominantly determined by the Ge s and Ge p orbitals of Rb7Tl1Ge46 and K7Tl1Ge46.

Abstract:Quasi-solvothermal syntheses and X-ray crystal structures of two germanates (H3O)(4)Ge7O16.3H(2)O and units K4Ge9O20 are presented. Although both structures are built up from the same rock-like secondary building (SBUs) Ge10O28 the frameworks are different because of the different connect manners of SBUs. Crystal data for H4Ge7O16.H2O: M-r = 894.77, space group P-43m, a = 0.77309(18) nm, V = 0.46205(19) mm(3), Z = 1, Mo Kalpha, lambda = 0.071073 nm, R(F) = 3.48%, wR(F-2) = 8.39% for 20 parameters and 228 reflections with I > 2sigma(I). Crystal data for K4Ge9O20: M-r = 1129.71, space group I4(1)/a, a = 1.5002(3) nm, c = 0.7383(2) nm, V = 1.6618(7) nm(3), Z = 4, Mo Kalpha, R(F) = 3.92%, wR(F-2) = 11.97% for 75 parameters and 92 reflections with I > 2sigma(I).

Abstract:Structure and chemical features of layered compounds BaM2Ge4Ch6 (M = Rh, Ir; Ch = S, Se) synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature method are systematically studied. These compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic phase with space group Pbca (No. 61). The remarkable structural feature is to have the M-Ge-Ch pyrite-type building units, stacking with Ba-Ch layers alternatively along c axis. It is very rare and novel that pyrite-type subunits as the building blocks in the layered compounds. Theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that there are strongly polarized covalent bonds between Ge and Ch atoms, forming heteromolecule-like anions in these compounds. Moreover, Ge atoms in this structure exhibit unusual valence state (~ +1) due to the tetrahedral coordination environment of Ge atoms along with M and Ch atoms simultaneously.

Abstract:This paper provides both experimental and theoretical evidence of the remarkable flexibility of B–O–X bond angles (X = Si or Ge). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of PhB(OSiPh3)2, PhB(OGePh3)2 and B(OSiPh3)3 are reported. In the compound B(OSiPh3)3, the B–O–SiPh3 units are sterically constrained and the three B–O–Si angles are approximately equal [138.5(2), 139.2(2) and 142.5(2)°]. In both PhB(OSiPh3)2 and PhB(OGePh3)2, different angles are observed for the two chemically equivalent B–O–X fragments [for X = Si, 139.8(4) and 157.9(3)° and for X = Ge, 130.4(5) and 149.0(5)°]. GAUSSIAN-86 calculations (STO-3G and STO-3G*) were performed on the model compounds H2B–O–XH3(X = Si or Ge), [(HO)H2B–SiH3]–, (HO)2B–O–Si(OH)3 and [(HO)3B–O–Si(OH)3]– to ascertain their minimum-energy geometries. The B–O–X angles in H2B–O–XH3(X = Si or Ge) and [(HO)H2B–O–SiH3]–, could be varied by 22°(36°), 24°(22°) or 16°(28°), respectively [data from STO-3G (and STO-3G*) calculations] without changing the compounds' minimum energies by >5 kJ mol–1. From the calculations, B–O–X angles appear to be as flexible in tetracoordinated boron species as in tricoordinated ones.

Abstract:The type-II clathrates of Cs8Na16Ga6Ge130, Cs8Na16Si22.0(3)Ge114.0(3) and Rb8Na16Si13.7(4)Ge122.3(4) have been synthesized from elements. The structures were refined from the powder X-ray diffraction data using the WinCSD program. Cs8Na16Ga6Ge130, Cs8Na16Si22.0(3)Ge114.0(3) and Rb8Na16Si13.7(4)Ge122.3(4) crystallized in the space group Fd3m with the lattice parameters of a = 15.48499 (3) angstrom, 15.44642(6) angstrom and 15.47489(5) angstrom, respectively. The theoretical calculation indicates the metallic features for Cs8Na16Ga6Ge130, Cs8Na16Si22.0(3)Ge114.0(3) and Rb8Na16Si13.7(4)Ge122.3(4. The heat capacity measurement shows a large electron contribution and a strong Einstein mode in Cs8Na16Ga6Ge130. The magnetic measurement evidences a diamagnetic behaviour for Cs8Na16Si22.0(3)Ge114.0(3) in the temperature range of 1.8-300 K.

Abstract:The first noncentrosymmetric potassium templated borogermanate, K(2)[Ge(B(4)O(9))].2H(2)O, has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by IR, SEM, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), TGA, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), single crystal X-ray diffraction, and second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, respectively. This compound crystallized in the monoclinic space group Cc with a = 6.793(1) A, b = 12.0699(3) A, c = 11.895(3) A, beta = 91.156(4) degrees, V = 975.1(4) A(3), and Z = 4. Interestingly, the structure possesses a unique 3D alternating linkage mode of B(4)O(9) clusters and GeO(4) units and contains two pairs of interweaving double helical channels with a 10-membered ring. In one, the right- and left-handed helices couple each other, and in the other, the left- and right-handed helices couple together. The compound exhibits distinct nonlinear optical (NLO) properties because it lacks a symmetric center. Furthermore, the framework of the title compound not only displays high thermal stability but also can be recoverable to a large degree during a dehydration-hydration cycle.

Abstract:The first alkaline-earth metal thioborate-thiophosphate Ba 3 (BS 3 )(PS 4 ) was designed from Ba 3 (BO 3 )(PO 4 ) by the S-O substitution and fabricated in experiment. The formed [BS 3 ] pseudo-layers in the structure contribute to strong optical anisotropy and a large birefringence of ~0.11@1064 nm. The results enrich the structural and chemical diversity of chalcogenides.

Abstract:The new barium zinc(II) tellurate disilicate Ba3Zn6[TeO6][Si2O7]2 was synthesized by the high temperature solid state reaction of BaCO3, ZnO, and SiO2 with TeO3·H2O in a molar ratio of 3:6:4:1 in an evacuated silica tube at 820 °C. Its structure was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Ba3Zn6[TeO6][Si2O7]2 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/m (no. 12), with cell parameters of a = 15.975(5), b = 11.505(4), c = 5.142(2) A, β = 107.437(5)°, V = 901.7(5) A3, and Z = 2. The structure of Ba3Zn6[TeO6][Si2O7]2 is composed of two types of zinc oxide polyhedra ([ZnO4] tetrahedra and [ZnO6] octahedra), [TeO6] octahedra, disilicate group [Si2O7], [BaO6] and [BaO7] polyhedra. It can be described as a three-dimensional anionic network of {Zn6[TeO6][Si2O7]2}6−, which is built from one-dimensional chains of [Zn6TeO18]18− anion interconnected by disilicate [Si2O7]6− groups with the barium cations located at the six-membered apertures of the above-mentioned anionic network.
