Abstract:First principles calculations show that gold atoms with low generalized coordination numbers possess high activity for electro-reduction of CO2 to CO. Atom-resolved three-dimensional reconstruction reveals that dealloyed nanoporous gold possesses such a favourable structure characteristic, which results in a faradaic efficiency as high as 94% for CO production.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO 2 reduction is a promising technology for solving the CO 2 emission problems and producing value-added products. Here, we report a hierarchically porous Cu 1 Au single-atom alloy (SAA) as an efficient electrocatalyst for CO 2 reduction. Benefiting from the hierarchically porous architectures with abundant vacancies as well as three-dimensional accessible active sites, the as-prepared nanoporous Cu 1 Au SAA catalyst shows remarkable CO 2 reduction performance with nearly 100% CO Faraday efficiency in a wide potential range (−0.4 to −0.9 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. The in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies and density functional theory calculations reveal that the Cu-Au interface sites serve as the intrinsic active centers, which can facilitate the activated adsorption of CO 2 and stabilize the *COOH intermediate.

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 is a promising approach toward artificial carbon recycling. The rate and product selectivity of this reaction are highly sensitive to the surface structures of electrocatalysts. We report here 4H Au nanostructures as advanced electrocatalysts for highly active and selective reduction of CO2 to CO. Au nanoribbons in the pure 4H phase, Au nanorods in the hybrid 4H/fcc phase, and those in the fcc phase are comparatively studied for the electroreduction of CO2. Both the activity and selectivity for CO production were found to exhibit the trend 4H-nanoribbons > 4H/fcc-nanorods > fcc-nanorods, with the 4H-nanoribbons achieving >90% Faradaic efficiency toward CO. Electrochemical probing and cluster expansion simulations are combined to elucidate the surface structures of these nanocrystals. The combination of crystal phase and shape control gives rise to the preferential exposure of undercoordinated sites. Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals renewable electricity is a promising and ecofriendly strategy to achieve the national strategic goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" and solve the greenhouse effect. Due to the variety of products in CO2 electroreduction (CO2ER), catalytic selectivity has become a key factor in the design of electrode structure. Herein, a systematic investigation of CO2ER on the nanoporous gold films with different thicknesses prepared by the self-deposition method developed by ourselves. Mass transfer effects are found to play an important role in determining product selectivity and activity. The specific activity for CO evolution (jCO) with exponential declination has more dramatic tendency than the specific activity for hydrogen evolution (jH2) with linear decay with increasing nanoporous gold film thickness. Different from the behaviors within the mesoporous structures in previous studies, the retarded transport of HCO3− ions within the nanoscale pores is more sensitive than that of protons. This phenomenon implies the necessity of considering mass transfer effects in the design of outstanding electrocatalysts for CO2ER as well as for understanding the geometrical infrastructure-performance relationships.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO is usually subject to the competitive reduction of H+ to hydrogen. In this work, it was demonstrated that increasing the local pH at the electrode/electrolyte interface would greatly improve the selectivity for CO2 reduction to CO by inhibiting hydrogen evolution, resulting in a high CO faradaic efficiency of 90.5%. And this pH-induced effect can be achieved by increasing the thickness of the porous gold film through a facile synthetic technique, based on the enhancement of the mass transfer resistance within the highly porous electrode. Moreover, the thickest film, which had a large electrochemical surface area, displayed a significantly improved catalytic activity for CO2 reduction at a low overpotential of 390 mV. These results indicate that increasing the local pH by thickening the porous gold film is selective and efficient for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemically converting the overemitted CO2 from fossil fuel combustion back into the natural carbon cycle has become a hot spot in recent years. However, surfactants on synthesized nanocatalysts have negative effects on the activity and selectivity. Herein, we transferred the surfactants on single-crystalline gold nanoparticles into N-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) by a hydrothermal method, which not only cleared the Au surfaces but also enhanced the catalytic activity for converting CO2 into CO at ultralow potentials. The highest faradaic efficiency reaches 93% at −0.25 V vs RHE, and CO production starts from as low as −0.15 V, which is much lower than other Au-based nanocatalysts. DFT calculations were applied to investigate the mechanism and indicate that the synergistic effect between gold and NGQDs is a key to increasing activity.

Abstract:Wide application of carbon dioxide (CO2) electrochemical energy storage requires catalysts with high mass activity. Alloy catalysts can achieve superior performance to single metals while reducing the cost by finely tuning the composition and morphology. We used in silico quantum mechanics rapid screening to identify Au-Fe as a candidate improving CO2 reduction and then synthesized and tested it experimentally. The synthesized Au-Fe alloy catalyst evolves quickly into a stable Au-Fe core-shell nanoparticle (AuFe-CSNP) after leaching out surface Fe. This AuFe-CSNP exhibits exclusive CO selectivity, long-term stability, nearly a 100-fold increase in mass activity toward CO2 reduction compared with Au NP, and 0.2 V lower in overpotential. Calculations show that surface defects due to Fe leaching contribute significantly to decrease the overpotential.

Abstract:Abstract Developing in situ/operando spectroscopic techniques with high sensitivity and reproducibility is of great importance for mechanistic investigations of surface-mediated electrochemical reactions. Herein, we report the fabrication of highly ordered rhombic gold nanocube superlattices (GNSs) as substrates for surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) with significantly enhanced SEIRA effect, which can be controlled by manipulating the randomness of GNSs. Finite difference time domain simulations reveal that the electromagnetic effect accounts for the significantly improved spectroscopic vibrations on the GNSs. In situ SEIRAS results show that the vibrations of CO on the Cu 2 O surfaces have been enhanced by 2.4 ± 0.5 and 18.0 ± 1.3 times using GNSs as substrates compared to those on traditional chemically deposited gold films in acidic and neutral electrolytes, respectively. Combined with isotopic labeling experiments, the reaction mechanisms for C-C coupling of CO electroreduction on Cu-based catalysts are revealed using the GNSs substrates.

Abstract:We report selective electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide on gold nanoparticles (NPs) in 0.5 M KHCO3 at 25 °C. Among monodisperse 4, 6, 8, and 10 nm NPs tested, the 8 nm Au NPs show the maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) (up to 90% at -0.67 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE). Density functional theory calculations suggest that more edge sites (active for CO evolution) than corner sites (active for the competitive H2 evolution reaction) on the Au NP surface facilitates the stabilization of the reduction intermediates, such as COOH*, and the formation of CO. This mechanism is further supported by the fact that Au NPs embedded in a matrix of butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate for more efficient COOH* stabilization exhibit even higher reaction activity (3 A/g mass activity) and selectivity (97% FE) at -0.52 V (vs RHE). The work demonstrates the great potentials of using monodisperse Au NPs to optimize the available reaction intermediate binding sites for efficient and selective electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO.

Abstract:Monolithic nanoporous silver (np‐Ag) fabricated by a facile electrochemical method is attractive for electrocatalytic applications. However, the conversion mechanism between Ag and AgCl remains unclear as a result of the lack of appropriate electron microscopy evidence. Herein, systematic scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the surface and cross‐sectional views were carried out during the anodic formation and reduction of the AgCl layer. To avoid the thermal decomposition of AgCl and the destruction of the cross‐sectional morphology, Ar ion polishing at −140 °C under the cooling of liquid N2 was adopted. Our data show that the reduction process of the AgCl layer includes three processes: trigger, expansion, and shrinkage. A funnel‐like transient state was observed for the first time, leading to a new formation mechanism for the resultant np‐Ag. Outstanding performance in electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO was observed for one of the nanoporous Ag films presumably due to its unique nanostructure to promote initial electron transfer and active‐site exposure. The selectivity of CO between −0.31 and −0.56 V was higher than 90 %, and reached a maximum of 96 % at −0.36 V.

Abstract:Nanoporous zinc oxide (ZnO) is prepared by a hydrothermal method followed by thermal decomposition for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy results indicate that ZnO is reduced to Zn under the electrolysis conditions for catalyzing CO2 electroreduction. The reduced nanoporous ZnO exhibits obviously higher CO Faradaic efficiency and current density than commercial Zn foil with a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency of 92.0%, suggesting that the nanoporous structure facilitates electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 over reduced nanoporous ZnO, probably due to increased surface area and more coordination unsaturated surface atoms.

Abstract:Dealloyed nanoporous metals have attracted much attention because of their excellent catalytic activities toward various chemical reactions. Nevertheless, coarsening mechanisms in these catalysts have not been experimentally studied. Here, we report in situ atomic-scale observations of the structural evolution of nanoporous gold during catalytic CO oxidation. The catalysis-induced nanopore coarsening is associated with the rapid diffusion of gold atoms at chemically active surface steps and the surface segregation of residual Ag atoms, both of which are stimulated by the chemical reaction. Our observations provide the first direct evidence that planar defects hinder nanopore coarsening, suggesting a new strategy for developing structurally stable and highly active heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Inspired by the architectural feature of the natural enzyme of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase, cysteamine-capped Au nanoparticles (CA–Au NPs) are investigated with remarkable mass activity for CO2 reduction. CA–Au NPs exhibit exclusive CO selectivity, low onset overpotential, and a 110-fold enhancement in mass activity compared with ligand-free Au NPs. Electronic structure and in situ spectroscopy analyses indicate that increased activity is due to the electronic effect derived from thiolate anchoring on the surface and chemisorbing CO2 and intermediates by terminal -NH2 functional groups. Our study provides the basis for fabricating effective catalysts for CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Distinct from bulk materials, dealloyed nanoporous metals possess a large electrochemical surface area and abundant surface steps that are active for electrochemical reactions. Herein we fabricate a nanoporous gold electrocatalyst by electrochemical dealloying of potential cycling, which enables reducing carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide with a Faradaic efficiency of up to 98% at an overpotential of 390 mV. Pb-upd measurements verify that the high activity stems from the high density of step/kink sites with geometrically needed high-index facets on the curved internal surface. Moreover, a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ stripping voltammograms reveals that catalysis decay during long-term stability test results from the reduction of surface step/kink sites and the deposition of metal impurities (Zn, Pb, and Cu). Core–shell Nanoporous AuCu3@Au Monolithic Electrode for Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Selective conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to a reusable form of carbon via electrochemical reduction has attracted intensive interest for the storage of renewable energy. However, the achievement of efficient bulk monolithic electrocatalysts still remains a challenge. Herein, a facile oxidative etching of the Au20Cu80 alloy was developed for the synthesis of a monolithic nanoporous core–shell structured AuCu3@Au electrode, which showed a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 97.27% with a partial current density of 5.3 mA cm−2 at −0.6 V vs. RHE for the production of CO. The FE value is about 1.45 times higher than that over the Au nanocatalyst. Unlike single nanoporous Au, AuCu3@Au maintained an excellent performance in a broad potential window. Furthermore, a 23 cm long nanoporous AuCu3@Au bulk electrode with good ductility was prepared, over which the active current reached up to 37.2 mA with a current density of 10.78 mA cm−2 at −0.7 V vs. RHE, pushing the reduction of CO2 to industrialization. The unsaturated coordination environment with a coordination number of 8.2 over the shell gold and curved interface determined this high electrocatalytic performance. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the double-dentate adsorption structure in the AuCu3@Au catalyst effectively improves the stability of the *COOH intermediate. The density of states indicates that the introduction of Cu causes the d-band-centre of AuCu3@Au to move toward the Fermi level, directly bonding with *COOH. Therefore, the adsorption of *COOH on the surface of the AuCu3@Au catalyst is strengthened, facilitating the formation of CO. This work opens an avenue to achieve self-supported porous electrodes for various useful catalytic conversions.
