Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial processes for energy conversion/storage systems, such as fuel cells, metal–air batteries, and water splitting. However, both reactions are severely restricted by their sluggish kinetics, thus requiring highly active, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts. Herein, we develop novel bifunctional nanocatalysts through surface nanoengineering of dealloying-driven nanoporous gold (NPG). Pd overlayers were precisely deposited onto the NPG ligament surface by epitaxial layer-by-layer growth. More importantly, the obtained NPG-Pd overlayer nanocatalysts exhibit remarkably enhanced electrocatalytic activities toward both the ORR and OER in alkaline media, benchmarked against a stateof- the-art Pt/C catalyst. The improved electrocatalytic performance is rationalized by the unique three-dimensional nanoarchitecture of NPG, enhanced Pd utilization efficiency from precise control of the Pd overlayers, and change in electronic structure, as revealed by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:We demonstrate the electrochemical etching of gold in a solution of hydrofluoric acid and dimethylformamide (DMF) to fabricate nanoporous gold (NpAu) films. Compared to de-alloyed NpAu, the electrochemically etched NpAu exhibits controllable pore size and etching depth by adjusting the etching conditions. We propose an etching mechanism where the organic electrolyte DMF protects the nascent gold pore walls by slowing the dissolution of gold oxide. At the same time, localized reactions occurring at the gold electrode surface focus the etching current for etching into depth. We further modify the as-prepared NpAu surface with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and use the nanotube-decorated surface as an electrochemical sensor to detect bisphenol A, an endocrine disruptor chemical. A 100 nM limit of detection is achieved by combining the catalytic capacity of SWCNTs with the specific surface area of a NpAu electrode.

Abstract:Distinct from bulk materials, dealloyed nanoporous metals possess a large electrochemical surface area and abundant surface steps that are active for electrochemical reactions. Herein we fabricate a nanoporous gold electrocatalyst by electrochemical dealloying of potential cycling, which enables reducing carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide with a Faradaic efficiency of up to 98% at an overpotential of 390 mV. Pb-upd measurements verify that the high activity stems from the high density of step/kink sites with geometrically needed high-index facets on the curved internal surface. Moreover, a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and <i>in situ</i> stripping voltammograms reveals that catalysis decay during long-term stability test results from the reduction of surface step/kink sites and the deposition of metal impurities (Zn, Pb, and Cu). Abstract:Owing to the unique three-dimensional bi-continuous (pore and ligament) structure of nanoporous metals, active sites and electron conduction are both promoted for electrocatalytic reactions. However, the narrowing pore sizes for increasing surface areas provide more active sites but hindered mass diffusion. Therefore, there are optimal values for the ligament and pore size of nanoporous metal electrocatalysts. As an outstanding electrocatalyst towards hydrogen peroxide reduction reaction (HPRR), the structure features of nanoporous gold (NPG) were investigated in detail by using electrochemical techniques, e.g., rotating disk electrode (RDE) in this paper. The experimental results demonstrated that residual silver in NPG did not afford a positive effect for HPRR although exhibiting good catalytic activity alone. Furthermore, by comparing the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of NPG samples with various ligament/pore sizes, NPG electrocatalyst with pore size of ~ 30 nm exhibited an optimal catalytic activity and stability for HPRR.

Abstract:A general method is developed to prepare durable hybrid nanocatalysts by nanostructuring the surface of gold wires via simple alloying and dealloying. The resulting nanoporous gold/Au (NPG/Au) wire catalysts possess nanoporous skins with their thicknesses on robust metal wires specified in a highly controllable manner. As a demonstration, the as-obtained NPG/Au was shown to be a highly active, chemo-selective, and recyclable catalyst for the reduction of nitro compounds and azides using organosilanes as reducing agents.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a new and simple approach to fabricate nanoporous structure on gold thin films (similar to 1.5 mu m) via electrochemical alloying and dealloying reactions in ZnCl2/DMSO electrolyte. The relevant parameters affecting the formation of nanoporous structure in the alloying/dealloying process in organic electrolyte and the post-treatment in sulfuric acid solution are investigated in detail by simultaneous electrochemical and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) characterization. Herein, a new strategy for direct estimation of the end-point in the dealloying process is developed, assuring the success of preparing nanoporous gold (NPG) films with the highest purity and porosity. Our method is especially useful for fabrication of nanoporous structure on ultrathin Au films without any further deposition of Au. The as-prepared NPG thin films are then used as anodic catalysts for borohydride oxidation in the direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC), which show much higher catalytic activities in contrast to planar gold electrode, indicative of the promising applications in actual DBFC systems. We believe that our work offers a new route to solve the current problems encountered in the development of DBFCs.

Abstract:An effective method is proposed to ascertain the contribution of pore size by using the comprehensive parameter that is contributed by electrochemical surface areas and surface crystal facets. After normalization, an essential correlation between pore size and specific activity is obtained in nanoporous gold. Electrochemical reduction enables the conversion of CO2 into fuel in favor of its global circulation. Nanoporous metals with interconnected and unique skeletons contain large amounts of active sites for effective catalysis, while reaction dynamics are usually stuck by mass transport limited by nanoscale channels. In this work, nanoporous gold (NPG) with different pore sizes is utilized to evaluate the intrinsic behavior of mass transport within nanoscale channels. By defining one comprehensive parameter to exclude the effect of crystalline facets, the intrinsic contribution of mass transport within nanoscale channels to catalytic activity is experimentally identified. Identical correlations between pore size and specific current density are observed in two kinds of NPG that contain crystalline facets with obviously different fractions and comparable fractions. Therefore, the specific current density of CO production monotonously increases with pore size, with a subsequent saturation in both NPG. The critical size of 46 nm correlating with mass transport within nanoscale channels offers one fundamental principle to design hierarchically porous catalysts with high electrochemical activity in the future.

Abstract:The nanoporous gold(NPG) electrodes with uniform pore sizes and ligaments were prepared by using a simple dealloying method.The as-prepared NPG showed high catalytic activity towards the oxidation of formic acid and formaldehyde.After tiny amount of platinum was deposited onto the NPG substrate,not only the structure stability of NPG was greatly improved,but also the Pt-Au bimetallic catalysts displayed the better catalytic activity and the stronger poison resistance towards the electrooxidation of small organic molecules than the bulk platinum due to synergistic effect between Au and Pt compositions.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO is usually subject to the competitive reduction of H+ to hydrogen. In this work, it was demonstrated that increasing the local pH at the electrode/electrolyte interface would greatly improve the selectivity for CO2 reduction to CO by inhibiting hydrogen evolution, resulting in a high CO faradaic efficiency of 90.5%. And this pH-induced effect can be achieved by increasing the thickness of the porous gold film through a facile synthetic technique, based on the enhancement of the mass transfer resistance within the highly porous electrode. Moreover, the thickest film, which had a large electrochemical surface area, displayed a significantly improved catalytic activity for CO2 reduction at a low overpotential of 390 mV. These results indicate that increasing the local pH by thickening the porous gold film is selective and efficient for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Nanoporous gold film (NPGF) electrode was fabricated by applying multicyclic potential scans on a polished gold electrode in an electrolyte composed of ZnCl2 and benzyl alcohol. In the cathodic potential scan, Zn was first electrodeposited on the gold electrode surface, and Au-Zn alloy was then directly formed on the surface under an elevated temperature. In the subsequent anodic potential scan, dealloying of Zn took place, resulting in a nanostructured gold film. Furthermore, Zn was then electrodeposited onto the porous gold surface and a Au-Zn alloy was formed at the same time. Through controlling the parameters of cyclic voltammetry and cyclic times, we finally obtained a three-dimensional NPGF with nanopores. The resulting NPGF possessed ultrahigh roughness factor and surface area. Results showed that the electrochemical activity of the NPGF electrode was much higher than that of the polished gold electrode. We believe that the resulting NPGF electrode is promising in the fields of catalysis, sensors, and so on. Meanwhile, this multicyclic electrochemical alloying/dealloying method may be applied to fabricate other nanoporous metal films.
